3 About Convention Tower Located on the corner of Penn Avenue and Tenth Street in downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District, Convention Tower is surrounded by many of Downtown's most vibrant amenities. Convention Tower's closest neighbors include The Westin Hotel, Sonoma Grill and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Right down Penn Avenue you'll find numerous eateries, galleries, and theaters. In addition to its location in the Cultural District, Convention Tower is also a part of the Penn-Liberty Historic District, which contains some the best preserved portions of Pittsburgh's turn-of-the-century architecture. Unlike many buildings in the district, Convention Tower is unique because from the exterior it looks like two buildings side-by-side, one 6 stories and one 12, but on the inside the two buildings are seamlessly connected. Inside you'll find a variety of businesses ranging from creative marketing and communications to health and child care. Convention Tower is also home to TenPenny, which will be celebrating its grand opening soon and boasts a comfortable culinary experience. 5 History Convention Tower has been a part of the Pittsburgh skyline since the late 1800's during the years Downtown was being rebuilt as a modern business district Penn Avenue, the oldest street in Pittsburgh, follows the path that British General John Forbes and his troops marched as they moved through the wilderness to take control of the Point in November of Some years later in 1792, after Pittsburgh was an established outpost, Fort Lafayette was built on the corner of what is now Penn Avenue and Ninth Street to protect the western side of the outpost from raiding Native Americans. This fort was commonly known as Fort Fayette. In 1803, Fort Lafayette was used to amass supplies for the Lewis and Clark expedition. It also posed as a launching off point for the famous journey. Convention Tower has been a part of the Pittsburgh skyline since it was built in the late 1800's during the years Downtown was being rebuilt as a modern business district. In its earliest days, Convention Tower was home to Pickering's. Advertised as "Greater Pittsburgh's Greatest Furniture and Carpet Store," it filled 6 floors and the basement with quality home goods. To celebrate their grand opening in the new location Pickering's held a pie eating contest on Penn Avenue where cable cars could be found carrying people up and down the street. Thousands came to witness the spectacle. As the Pickering's name and business grew they expanded the building by erecting and adjoining a nine-story building in By 1914, they needed more space so three more floors were added to the adjoining building. The home goods store was a Pittsburgh mainstay for more than 60 years when it closed it's doors in Ghost signs for Pickering's can still be found today on the sides of brick buildings throughout Pittsburgh. The Penn-Liberty Historical District, where Convention Tower is located, features many Victorian and early twentieth-century commercial architectural styles which have survived to the present day. It is one of the best-preserved districts in Pittsburgh.

6 Convention Tower is unique in that in that it is actually two adjoined buildings. The first six floors span both buildings and the top 6 floors are in the taller adjoined building.

7 Convention Tower is home to a range of tenants from creative marketing and communications to health and child care that are all housed within 91,000 square feet and a friendly atmosphere. Getting to Convention Tower is easy with numerous options for public transit and parking.
