Cuenca is one of the most charming cities in Ecuador; it was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1999 and is located in the inter-andean valley of the Ecuadorian Southern Sierra, 442 km from the city of Quito (capital of Ecuador) and 193 km from Guayaquil, (main port of the country), with an altitude of 2,538 m above sea level. The Athens of Ecuador, as it is called, is capital of the province of Azuay, an area with a privileged climate, with a variable temperature that goes from 7 to 15 C in winter and from 12 to 25 C in summer. The city has a territorial extension of 8,639 km² and a population of approximately inhabitants. It has an urban landscape that keeps the harmony with the geographical environment, highlighting its historical downtown, considered one of the most preserved and largest in the country. This place keeps the past; people blend with flowers, crafts, textiles, embroidery, ceramics, and silverware, among other attractions. The city of Cuenca will host the III World Summit of Regions on Food Security and Sovereignty.
