2 The Debut of In November 1984, Hong Kong based Shangri-La International Hotels and Resorts entered into a joint venture with the Zhejiang Tourism Group. The joint venture saw major changes. The Hangzhou Hotel and the Xiling Hotel were amalgamated to become. The previous Xiling Hotel became the East Wing whilst the Hangzhou Hotel became the West Wing. The amalgamation also saw the beautiful gardens combined to their present-day 40 acres, something that even today cannot be matched by any other hotel in Hangzhou. The combining of both properties and the management by Shangri-La gave it the distinction and honour of becoming Zhejiang Province's first international hotel. Being the first Shangri-La hotel in China, it also became the birthplace of the group's further expansion in China. The joint venture was an immediate success and reached new heights. It became the showcase not only for Hangzhou City and Zhejiang Province but also for the People s Republic of China. Over the years that have followed, the Shangri-La hotel was to become the favoured address for a wide range of world leaders, statesmen and dignitaries from across the world. From its conception, the hotel has occupied the highest position amongst its competitors. The hotel is the combination of modernity and traditions in stunning surrounds. 2

3 Overview The hotel is located along the shore of West Lake on Beishan Road, directly opposite Solitary Hill Island, which is linked to the mainland by Xiling Bridge. At the back of the hotel is the Xi Xia Ling including Baoshi Hill, which has been described as Diamond Hill under the Evening Sunlight. Directly in front of the hotel is the famous West Lake, where popular recreational pursuits include boat cruises and cycling trips; the famous poet Su Dong Po once likened West Lake to the mythical beauty Xizi. To the right of the hotel is the ancient temple and tomb of the highly revered Chinese patriotic general, Yue Fei. Located five minutes from downtown, the hotel is a 15-minute drive to the railway station and 45 minutes to the city s international and domestic airports. The hotel occupies 40 acres of rolling hills and lush greenery overlooking West Lake, Solitary Hill Island and the graceful Xiling Bridge. now comprises two main wings, a large convention centre and a cluster of three villas set amongst 40 acres of magnificent gardens. The West Wing, with its very distinctive Chinese-style roofs and stonework, is one of the most photographed buildings in Hangzhou; above the revolving door are the four original brass Chinese characters meaning Hangzhou Hotel, and the lobby is decorated with the traditional Chinese painting Dan Feng Chao Yang. Linked by a covered walkway is the East Wing. Although this wing was constructed a few years later than the West Wing, it still offers spacious guestrooms and public areas with high ceilings. The higher floors of this wing command views of West Lake, which are unparalleled anywhere in Hangzhou. Just a brief look into the auditorium, which verges on being a National Heritage site, gives an insight into yesteryear, and if you listen carefully, you might hear the echoes of fiery rhetorical speeches from a bygone era. 3

6 Dining and Entertainment Restaurants From an intimate conversation to a large banquet, the restaurants at Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou present an array of dining options ideal for any occasion. Sample the dynamic international buffet at Coffee Garden, the best Italian dishes at Peppino or authentic Hangzhou cuisine complemented with a Cantonese selection at Shang Palace. COFFEE GARDEN The unique open buffet at Coffee Garden serves a blend of Asian and international fare during meal periods and à la carte throughout the day. Our peaceful patio overlooks the garden and the lake. A constantly varied menu is on display as the talented and friendly chefs take centre stage creating dishes to order. PEPPINO Delight yourself in the flavours of Italy in Hangzhou's finest Italian restaurant. GARDEN BAR The hotel's Garden Bar is the perfect place to relax over an afternoon tea set, a pre-dinner cocktail or an evening of romance in the bar s garden. Garden Bar offers live jazz entertainment. It is recognised as one of the hotel's most popular destinations. LOBBY LOUNGE The Lobby Lounge, located in the East Wing, is a fine place to meet for afternoon tea, light snacks or cocktails, with a peaceful view of the hotel's gardens. 7

8 Banqueting and Conference Venues offers a wide range of facilities for conferences and social functions. Our extensive range of more than 19 meeting and function rooms can cater for anything from intimate banquets to international gala events. Our traditional fixed-seat auditorium can accommodate up to 582 guests. Most meeting equipment is also available. The East Wing offers a range of facilities that include the Lotus Pond Ballroom, which covers an area of 283 square metres and holds up to 150 persons for a banquet and a meeting set-up. Lotus Pond has four adjoining rooms that can be used for group discussions or as a holding area for VIP guests. Four other rooms in the East Wing accommodate a range of 10 to 50 people for a meeting and up to 60 for a sit-down dinner. The Auditorium, which is linked to the West Wing by a covered walkway, features a theatre that holds 298 guests in the main hall and 284 in the balcony area. It has a stage and an orchestra room. On the second floor of the facility there are 4 function rooms; an additional four function rooms can be found on the third floor. 10 Karl Karlsson, General Manager Who s Who at Always see things from the guest s point of view This philosophy has helped his hospitality career. Karl who is a Hong Kong Resident was born in Sweden. He was three years in the army as a specialist and after university and hotel school in Sweden he worked in France, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. He is the only western certified Tai Chi instructor by the Hong Kong Tai Chi Association. He has been practising martial arts since he was 12 years old. He also enjoys Malaysian Silat, Qigong, Salt water fly-fishing and is learning how to write Chinese characters. He was in the opening team of the first JW Marriott in Asia in Hong Kong in Successfully opened the Q Bar in Shangri-La Qingdao and also the Chi the Spa in Shangri-La s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa in Kota Kinabalu. He is a former DJ and he has between 1998 and 2000 organized more than ten rave parties in Hong Kong with the best DJ s in the world. On the Global Underground album John Dig weed in Hong Kong it says he is the first hotel manager in the world who had the guts to let over 2500 people into a overnight dance party in a 5 star hotel. He enjoys leading his hotel CSR team in weekly bird watching around the Westlake and work with local people on how to protect the unique species of birds around the Westlake in Hangzhou. He is married with Zoe who is from Beijing holding an MBA in Hotel Management. They have a 17 months old daughter Anna who speaks Chinese, English and Swedish. Maximilian Schwalbe, Director of Food and Beverage Although born in France, Maximilian spent his childhood in South East Asia going from country to country while growing up amongst the different cultures and discovering the amazing environments, people & food. After returning back to France to finish his studies, he then went on to Switzerland where he studied hospitality at the Ecole Hoteli re de Lausanne. After 3 years in one of Paris's top luxury hotel, he finally made his way back to where is heart is: Asia. Maximilian s first destination was Shanghai. It was at the Shangri-La Pudong where he readjusted quickly to the Asian life & work. He grew to the position of Assistant Director of Food & Beverage before heading to Shangri-la Singapore for a year also doing a brief stint in Shangri-la Makati. 10

11 In 2011, he is now heading the F&B Team at the Shangri-La Hangzhou, one of the iconic Chinese properties due to its ideal location and its history as the 1st Shangri-La in China. Adam Roy, Executive Chef A Native American born and bred in Chicago, Chef Adam Roy has a colourful array of experiences spanning the continents of North America, Europe and Asia. The adventures have not stopped since Chef Adam graduated from a culinary academy in the suburbs of Chicago in After working in many different operations in the United States, he continued his training in Germany and Switzerland for two years before working on large cruise liners that sailed the world. He then took an apprenticeship with the famous Tung Lok restaurant group in Singapore for a six-month intensive Chinese and Thai kitchens programme. There he learned all about the techniques and flavours of South East Asia. Finding his home in Asia, he then worked in Thailand for three years with international companies. Chef Adam s introduction to the Shangri-La family occurred when he joined Shangri-La s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, Sultanate of Oman as executive sous chef. He then went on to Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang to helm the famous Feringgi Grill restaurant, which under his stewardship won the award for "Most Innovative Western Restaurant" in 2010, bringing the restaurant to another level and helping to turn the page into a new era for the resort's food and beverage. In 2011, taking another challenge and the next step in his career, Chef Adam became the executive chef for. 11

12 Commitment to Protect the West Lake Heritage Located in the West Lake Landscape Culture Heritage Great news for West Lake was successful register in the UNESCO world heritage list, which is considered to be the only lake culture heritage in the world. From today, west lake stands on the world s arena, it becomes the cherish treasure of all the humanity. Shangri-la Hotel, Hangzhou has the long cultural history, is located in the area of West Lake Landscape Culture Heritage. It covers by the green mountain with trees, and closely overlooking the Westlake. The green area is more than 70% of the overall hotel area. The maintenance of the natural ecological environment is very good, peaceful and comfortable is all year round. And many kinds of birds are habituated. The hotel is also close to the most famous scenery destinations in Hangzhou. In the later stage of the West Lake Heritage Application Shangri-la Hotel, Hangzhou will make more effort on the West Lake protection. 12
