About Us Mann Yadanarpon Airlines (MYP) was incorporated as a Myanmar private limited liability company on 23 July 2013, and granted a permit on 27 January 2014 by the Myanmar Investment Commission to operate air transportation services on both domestic and international routes. All of our destinations are of tourism and/or commercial significance. Our Cabin Crew Our cabin crew training and administration managers and supervisors hold cabin crew instructor certificates from the ATR Training Center in Toulouse, France. All of our cabin crew have attended the Airline Cabin Crew Training Course approved by the Department of Civil Aviation. Our Engineering Crew Our licensed aircraft maintenance engineers have type ratings on ATR from the ATR Training Centers in Touluse, France and Singapore. Maintenance of our aircraft is carried out by our own Approved Maintenance Organization approved by the Department of Civil Aviation, Base maintenance is outsourced to approved maintenance, repair and overhaul organizations (MROS). We will expand our network to more domestic destinations after acquiring additional aircraft. We plan to commence regional operations after we have consolidated our domestic operations. 7 BAGAN: kingdom of war and faith The history and thousand-year legacy of Myanmar s first empire Jared Downing The story of Bagan begins with a wandering prince. His name was Pyusawhti, born in the second century CE, either to a king living in exile or, according to some chronicles, a sun prince and a dragon. Despite his humble mountain home, Pyusawhti s father gave him an education worthy of a king. When he became a man, Pyusawhti inherited a magic bow and the young prince left his home in search of adventure. When he came to the land called Bagan, he found its king and people under the tyranny of a great tiger, a great boar, a great bird and a great flying squirrel. With his magic bow, Pyusawhti slew each in turn and was awarded the hand of the princess, thus becoming the first proper ruler of what would grow into Myanmar s first and greatest empire. The most popular versions of the legend of Pyusawhti are found in the official royal history of Mandalay, Hmannan Yazawin. Its English translation is The Glass Palace Chronicle, which peddlers today sell at the foot of many pagodas in Bagan. How much of the Hmannan Yazawin s story is true is anyone s guess. 12 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 13

8 The first inhabitants of Bagan were probably Pyu, the people who populated the early city The rise of Anawrahta states of central Pyusawhti himself might have been Pyu or of the Nanzhao a war-like kingdom based in modern-day Yunnan whose people spent much of the eighth and ninth centuries conquering and plundering the Pyu. When the Nanzhao eventually vacated the Ayeyarwady River valley, the people they left in their wake were known as the Myanma, or strong horsemen, who spoke a language resembling modern Bagan or rather, the Bagan we know, with its breathtaking fields of ancient pagodas vanishing to the horizon began in the end of the first millennium as one of the Myanma citystates jockeying for power. It was here that King Anawrahta (pronounced ah-noy-rah-hta ) came into his own. As a child, Anawrahta saw his father s throne usurped by his older half-brother Sokkate. When Sokkate eventually took Anawratha s own mother as queen, the young prince, then around 30 years old, challenged Sokkate to single combat. His mother s milk is yet wet upon his lips, and he sayeth he will fight me! Sokkate jeered. Let all my ministers look on. I will fight him, man to man, on horseback! Anawrahta allowed Sokkate the first throw of the spear, and when his shot flew foul, swiftly ran his older brother through, killing him. Anawrahta became king in 1044 and ruled for more than 30 years. One by one the Myanma and Mon city-states fell to his empire, which his heirs would extend from the Malay Peninsula to the foothills of the Himalayas. It was Anawrahta who built the first of Bagan s famous pagodas. Four of the largest, one visible in each direction, mark the four corners of his domain. 9 The golden age of Bagan As Anawrahta s descendants expanded Bagan s empire, they continued to construct stupas, temples and monasteries in and around the city itself. It s thought that more than 10,000 monuments were built between the 11 th and 13 th centuries, as each new monarch tried to outdo their predecessors with the grandest displays of piety. Yet the rulers of Bagan were at times less than virtuous. Perhaps the most notorious was King Narathu, who, as the story goes, ascended in 1167 after murdering his father and older brother. To atone for his sins, he constructed the colossal Dhammayangyi Pahto temple, famous for its close-fitting brickwork laid by workers who legend has it risked having their hands cut off if Narathu could fit a needle into any gap. After brutally dismembering his own wife, an Indian princess, Narathu was eventually offed by Brahmin assassins. Bagan in order to secure the southern front in his efforts to conquer Yunnan. Although urged diplomacy, Narathihapate shunned Kublai Khan s first envoy and executed a second, as the chronicles tell it. Kublai Khan s armies swept south in 1277 and again in 1287 in a pair of invasions that shattered the 250-year-old empire. Although the Mongols soon withdrew, the Ayeyarwady River valley was left with just a collection of small states vying for power. Into this vacuum arose the Mon Hanthawaddy kingdom, at modern-day Bago, and the kingdom of Ava, south of Mandalay. Bagan continued as a city-state, but the sun had set on Anawrahta s empire. Despite the courtly intrigue, the Bagan empire continued to grow in wealth and power until (as with many empires) it began to sag under its own weight, and its vassals became increasingly powerful and independent. At a time when rebellions threatened the foundations of the empire, Narapati Sithu, the last great king of Bagan, ascended to the throne in He brought Bagan s vassal lords to heel, instituted effective economic reforms and ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity for Bagan. In fact, it may have been Narapati Sithu s reign that that solidified Bamar (or Myanma) script, architecture and tradition as the dominant culture throughout the Ayeyarwady River valley, according to historian Michael Aung-Thwin. In 1256, Narathihapate ascended the throne. He would be the last king of the Bagan empire. In 1271 and 1273, Kublai Khan grandson of Genghis Khan demanded nominal tribute from 16 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 17

10 The Bagan legacy Although Bagan s empire was gone, the city s wonders remained intact at least, for a time. Over the centuries, many of its treasures would fall prey to thieves and plunderers, who chiselled the intricate sculptures, frescos and cornerstones from the temple walls, and punched holes in the chests of Buddha images to pilfer the offerings contained within. But other major sites have been maintained and protected up until the modern day, adorned periodically with fresh brickwork, crenulations and gold leaf for their pagodas. Although some historians decry these efforts, favouring preservation of the ruins rather than outright restoration, others argue that many of Bagan s famous religious monuments never actually became ruins for almost a thousand years, faithful Buddhists have continued to worship, meditate and seek spiritual guidance among the old temples, stupas and monasteries. Questions of how to protect and preserve the old city came to the forefront after a massive earthquake in 1975 destroyed or damaged thousands of sites, including as many as half of the monuments in Bago, according to some estimates. In 1990, the new military government began a large-scale restoration of Bagan to enhance its appeal to tourists and hopefully earn UNESCO World Heritage listing. But the effort began with a highly controversial forced relocation of 4,000 people living within the old city (to a site now known as New Bagan), and the government continued to draw criticism after granting contracts for a golf course, lavish resorts and a massive observation tower within the archaeological zone. Although Myanmar s democratic government has attempted to curb further development within the archaeological zone and ban visitors from climbing the old temples, the coveted place on the UNESCO World Heritage List still eludes Bagan today. 18 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 19

11 An unusual route to the Golden Rock Simon Whiting In good light and perfect weather and outside the peak pilgrimage times there is something utterly majestic about the Golden Rock. The gold-swaddled boulder perches at the edge of Mt Kyaikhtiyo in Mon State, seemingly defying gravity. Its lure is such that hundreds of thousands visit the site every year to pay homage. The addition of a cable car just a few months ago has made it easier than ever to reach the top. Previously there were only two ways up the mountain: a six-hour hike through the forest; or a hair-raising, 20-minute truck ride through innumerable switchbacks, followed by a short but steep climb to the pagoda platform. Go back a bit further to the early 1990s and the long walk was the only option. As a fan of motor racing I can say I genuinely enjoy the diesel-powered, brake-busting ride, although it is often cramped and a bit scary. The contrast with the hike could not be greater. While a few decades ago the hiking trail was packed with pilgrims, today you ll rarely encounter anyone else, except the odd hermit or local taking wood or flowers from the forest. 20 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 21

To my mind the idea of spirituality usually contains an element of physical exertion or fasting. Some practitioners fast to achieve the correct mental state, while others opt to kneel in prayer for hours on end. However, there are several sites in Myanmar where it s possible to prepare for religious awakening through good old-fashioned hard work. And I mean hard work. The walk to the top is no Sunday stroll from the bus terminal at Kinpun to the summit it s about 7 miles (11.2 kilometres). In many places the trail is so steep it requires steps, including the leg-busting section known as po pyan taung which roughly translates to the hill where grandpa turned back. In most places the trail is hidden beneath a canopy of trees through which little sunlight permeates. But there are places where the trees thin and it s possible to catch views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. There are also numerous small shrines and pagodas on or near the main path that are fun to explore, but it s probably not a good idea to linger given the long trek ahead of you. Most buses arrive at Kinpun from Yangon in the very early morning, when it s still dark. Visitors typically catch a few hours sleep at a guesthouse or bamboo resthouse. For those hiking to the top, it s best to set off in the early light, although if you leave too early it can be a bit of a challenge to make out the signs pointing the way. If you ask around, you ll find people who can steer you in the right direction. An early departure in the cool morning air also helps to get some of the walking out of the way before the temperature begins to really ramp up. You want to be at the top in time for lunch, before the afternoon heat kicks in. Along the way hikers will have the chance to marvel at the flora and fauna of the forest the bird song is a particular treat. 22 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 23

13 It s prudent to carry a bottle of water but there are small stands at decent intervals where you can buy supplies. Do the right thing and store all garbage for disposal later (even if few others will follow your lead). If you time your hike perfectly, there ll be time to check into your hotel near the summit, have a snooze and then get to the pagoda platform in good time and spirits to catch the Golden Rock in its blazing sundown glory. And if you ve hiked to the top, there s a good chance your legs will encourage you to take either the cable car or truck back down. 24 Yadanarpon

14 Kanbawzathadi Palace recreating the past From the 14th to the mid-16th centuries, the Mon Hanthawaddy Kingdom based at Bago rivalled and at times surpassed the Burmese kingdoms of the interior. Covering much of lower Myanmar, the maritime, trade-based empire was regularly visited by European merchants and travellers, who commented on its wealth and grandeur. After studying plans of the great cities of the region, Bayintnaung settled on a design resembling his native Taungoo and Ayuthaya in Thailand. He built a city wall measuring 1.8 kilometres square, with five entrances on each side, and a grand palace known as Kanbawzathadi. The end of the Mon Golden Age came in 1534, when war broke out with the resurgent Burmese kingdom at Taungoo. In 1552, King Bayintnaung who conquered much of Southeast Asia snuffed out a final rebellion at Bago and made it his capital, marking the start of the second Burmese empire. 26 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 27

Both buildings are also mostly empty, leaving visitors to wonder at what life must have been like for those who lived there (let alone in the old city, where the common folk lived). The buildings represent just a fraction of Bayintnaung s original palace, most of which was made from wood. But they still give a sense of the wealth and grandeur that left such a strong impression on European visitors to Bago in the 16 th century. Like so many monuments built by the military, though, Kanbawzathadi Palace has not aged particularly well due to a lack of regular maintenance and Myanmar s unforgiving climate. Weeds sprout from the ceilings, the paint has begun to peel and undergrowth threatens to engulf the rear of the Bee Throne The original teak pillars sent as offerings from all corners of Bayintnaung s empire offer a more meaningful connection with the past. Some are on display inside the Lion Throne Room, while others are housed in a small shelter just outside. It s still possible to read the inscriptions many in both Mon and Burmese that state where they were sent from, and who sent them. You can imagine workers with a chisel carving the name of a saopha from Momeik into a huge log, before sending the offering to Bago by elephant and boat. 30 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 31

17 Thingyan: A truly national festival Water festival is celebrated across the country; everywhere you go you ll find water being thrown in the three or four days leading up to New Year s Day on April 17. The larger towns all have stages known as pandals (mandat in Myanmar) from where revellers can soak passers-by with large hoses. But there is a wide differentiation in the scale and intensity of how Thingyan is enjoyed, and each region has its own unique way of marking the festival. 32 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 33

18 Yangon As the country s largest city, it s not surprising that Yangon also packs the biggest punch when water festival rolls around. In years past, dozens of huge pandals around Inya and Kandawgyi lakes would heave with tens of thousands of festival-goers. However, 2016 saw a marked change of pace, with the new regional government introducing measures to stamp out commercial pandals. While those who wanted a more hedonistic festival experience were left disappointed, many commented that the changes represented a return to Thingyan s roots and made it more family-friendly. Whether this policy will continue this year is unclear, but it certainly changed the flavour of water festival celebrations in MANDAlay In contrast to the change of pace in Yangon, Mandalay saw few changes last year and continued to cement its reputation as a hotbed of water festival fun. Mandalay is perfectly laid out for Thingyan celebrations, and pandals tend to cluster around the western and northern sides of its moat. Anybody brave enough to walk in front of these stages should expect to do so in calf-deep water, as the output from the stages is far in excess of what the city s antiquated drainage system can handle. 34 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 35

19 Taunggyi The Shan State capital has a vibrant Thingyan thanks in part to the many famous singers who come home to perform during the festival, most notably Lay Phyu of Iron Cross. For a city of its size Taunggyi certainly punches above its weight, with a number of large stages spread across its compact downtown area. As a result, Taunggyi is a popular destination for residents of Yangon or Mandalay who want to escape the heat of the lowlands without missing out on a dose of Thingyan fun. kengtung Celebrations in the capital of eastern Shan State are, in many ways, similar to those in other cities of a similar size: residents zip around the town s lake on motorbikes, getting drenched by hoses set up on pandals. But Kengtung also boasts a unique ritual in which a drum is played for 24 hours before being taken in procession to a nearby village. At the end of the festival it is returned to a monastery for safekeeping until the next year. Pyin Oo Lwin and kalaw These two colonial-era hillstations host only modest water festival celebrations, but still see a significant influx of visitors from central Myanmar craving a respite from the scorching sun. If you take this option, be sure to book in advance if you turn up on the day, don t be surprised to find all of the hotels booked out! rakhine state While similar to the mainstream water festival celebrations, the Rakhine version has a few twists. Traditionally, the water thrown on revellers is scooped from a long boat, known as a laung hlay. In some areas Rakhine also hold a competition for the grinding of nantha, a type of sandalwood, which is then offered to Buddha images. These ceremonies are also held outside the state in cities that have large Rakhine communities, notably Yangon. 36 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 37

20 Natmataung an icon of Chin State When we left Bagan, the weather was as hot as ever. Although our eventual destination was Natmataung, one the country s most famous peaks, the aim was to reach Mindat and the cool mountain weather of southern Chin State later that day. We arrived first at Chauk, south of Bagan, and then crossed the Ayeywardy River and reached Seikphyu. From there we took the Pathein-Monywa Road to Pauk, which looked no different from many other towns in upper We kept driving west through the Pontaung Ponnya mountain range, where ancient primate fossils have been found in recent decades. On the way, we stopped at the Amay Yayin nat shrine (a nat is an animist spirit, normally based on a real person) to pay our respects. The shrine was atop a 2,200-foot mountain and when we drove down we arrived at the town of Kyauktu and then Kan Gyi, which is the entrance to Chin State from Magway Region. 38 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 39

21 The tarred road was in good condition and was lined with pine trees. The weather was suddenly cool as we entered Mindat, which is surrounded by pine forests. Mindat was quiet and we could see Natmataung in the distance. We were there for the annual Chin State Festival, held each year on February 20. The festival is marked at sports grounds in each township. People wear their traditional costumes and performance dances in a group. Chin girls treat guests with their staple meat, beef, and an alcoholic drink made from millet known as kaung yay. While in Mindat we also visited Kyar Hto village, which really is a must-see place in Chin State. There, you will see women with tattooed faces, as well as other aspects of traditional Chin culture. Of the 20 women we encountered with face tattoos, the youngest was 22. The tattoo designs are the same; the dotted patterns on their face resemble the markings of a tiger. Another aspect of local culture is religion. Although we saw a Christian cross at the entrance of the village, most of villagers seemed to worship the nat spirits. We left Mindat for Kanpetlet the following day. After Kan Gyi Khaung village, there was a junction and we headed south through a flat area filled with plantations. We were soon in Saw, from where we could drive up the mountain to Kanpetlet. At an elevation of around 1,400 metres, Kanpetlet is one of the major towns of southern Chin State and home to many government offices. Kanpetlet was originally built at a higher elevation during the colonial period around 1,900 metres but was shifted in 1979 to its present location because of weather and transport difficulties. 40 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 41

22 When we reached around 9,000 feet the pine trees gave way to oaks. We also saw many rhododendrons, known locally as taungzalat and famed for their red blooms. There s an interesting story behind the name Kanpetlet. At the previous site there was a muddy lake, which because it was always covered in mist looked like a white pearl. Locals called the town kan pa-le, or pearl lake, and it morphed into Kanpetlet over many years. Kanpetlet is the closest town to Natmataung. Also known as Mount Victoria or Khaw-nusoum, Natmataung has an elevation of 3,053 metres (10,016 feet) a prominence of 2,231 metres (7,320 feet). To reach the summit, we first took a car to what s known as 10.5-mile camp. From here we walked. We saw some young people living in bamboo houses; their lives looked hard but peaceful. We started walking at 9:15am. The road was quite wide and gentle wide enough for a Jeep and some people were going up the mountain on motorbikes. But we preferred to go up on foot. When we reached around 9,000 feet the pine trees gave way to oaks. We also saw many rhododendrons, known locally as taungzalat and famed for their red blooms. By this time, the weather was beginning to turn. It was cloudy, with no sun, and it had begun to rain. Our guide told us that many people gave up and turned back before reaching the summit. We kept walking even though it was getting cold. We held bamboo poles in our hands to help us climb up the slope. We went around cliffs and climbed over large trees that had fallen on the path. We didn t see any other hikers but at one point we meet a local foraging for vegetables who had walked from the other side of the mountain. He looked strong and healthy. As we got closer to the summit, grassy fields appeared. Finally we arrived at highest mountain in Chin State. There was a pagoda and a rest hall on top of the mountain. Visitors had written about their trips in charcoal on the interior walls of the hall. While we were on the peak, the weather gradually got worse; the wind had picked up and was now very strong. We wasted no time getting back, but still got caught in heavy rain. We were anxious and freezing cold, but it suddenly stopped raining about halfway down and the sky became clear again. 23 Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations INLE LAKE (Heho) While almost as popular with visitors as Bagan, Inle Lake is a very different kind of attraction one where tourists are obliged to kick up their heels, relax and enjoy the scenery. The lake, which is nestled into the Shan plateau, is the second largest natural water body in Myanmar and more than 1000 metres above sea level. Best known for its floating gardens and iconic ethnic Intha boatmen, Inle Lake offers visitors boating tours of the villages out on the water, as well as the silver and goldsmiths, and weavers who live and work there. Visitors can choose to stay in hotels on the water, in the township of Nyaung Shwe or around the edges of the lake. BAGAN (Nyaung U) YANGON Once a multicultural, cosmopolitan city under British, Yangon slowly declined during Myanmar s long self-imposed absence from the international sphere. The city s downtown area contains wondrous reminders of the colonial era but is modernising fast. New bars, restaurants and fascinating galleries are thriving in the post-military rule era. What slight charm Yangon has lost in the country s recent and sharp progress is more than made up for in the explosion of places to eat and drink. Bagan is arguably the country s peak tourist destination, and for good reason it s one of the richest archeological sites in the region and contains more than 2000 pagodas, temples and religious sites. The zone also has some of the best hotels in Myanmar, while one company offers balloon flights that provide stunning bird s eye views of the plain. Other attractions include a golf course and horse riding tours. One of the best aspects of Bagan is the ease of getting there: visitors can fly into the Nyaung U airport, catch a bus from Mandalay or Yangon, hire a car to drive or hop on one of a number of boats and cruise there from Mandalay. 44 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 45

24 MANDALAY Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations Often and fairly described as the cultural capital of Myanmar, Mandalay is a vastly different city to either bustling Yangon or the national capital Nay Pyi Taw. For many tourists Mandalay is the stepping off point for a tour of the country s peak tourist attractions the stupa-dotted plains of Bagan and the idyllic Inle Lake. But the city offers so many of its own attractions that it s easy enough to spend a couple of days there, although it s best to plan ahead and do sightseeing outside of the hottest hours in the afternoon because the weather can be intense. Mandalay has many fascinating religious sites such as the Mahamuni Pagoda and Mandalay Hill, but there is also the Royal Palace and cultural attractions such as handweaving of silk and cotton, stone carving, goldworking shops and bronze casting. Further afield are the ancient capitals of Amarapura, Sagaing, Ava and Mingun. Of these, Mingun is considered unmissable, with its incredible brick pagoda and giant bronze bell sure to catch the eye of visitors. KYAING TONG (Kengtung) TACHILEIK Kyaing Tong is the heart of the Golden Triangle a hilly region where Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet. It is a trekking oasis for travellers, both from Myanmar and abroad. The hard-to-reach hills are home to an extremely diverse mix of ethnic groups including the Akha, Lahu, Eng and Shan. Similarly diverse are the religions practiced by the different groups it s easy to see small villages of one ethnic group in close proximity but separated by religion, be it Buddhism, Christianity or Animism. And within the town are the usual religious sites Buddha images in different positions, churches and pagodas that you can find in nearly every town in Further afield is the former casino town of Mong-La, which is notable today for its museum dedicated to the government s efforts to halt opium production. A famous border town between Myanmar and Thailand, Tachileik is popular with tourists in Thailand who need to visit another country to get their visas renewed. A small replica of Yangon s Shwedagon Pagoda sits on a hill overlooking the town. The town s market is a thriving commercial centre where tourists can buy all manner of cheap clothing, fashion accessories, electronics and DVDs. 46 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 47

25 KAWTHAUNG Kawthaung is Myanmar s southernmost main town and sits at the mouth of Kyan River on the Malay Peninsula with the Thai border town or Ranong to its near east. Like Tachileik, Kawthaung is popular with foreigners living in Thailand who need to exit the country to renew their visa. But Kawthaung is so much more than that it s the most common destination to embark on one of the liveaboard boats that explore the wonders of the Myeik Archipelago, including its nearly untapped diving spots and deserted islands Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations MYEIK The Tanintharyi Region town of Myeik was a busy seaport during the colonial era and remains an important commerce town today. As well as hosting a large fishing fleet that trawls the Myeik Archipelago, Myeik is famous for the bird s nests harvested from shorefront buildings and the caves on its islands, as well as the pearling industry. However, there is plenty more to like about Myeik, including its incredible collection of colonial-era houses and buildings, many of which remain family homes or businesses today. DAWEI A formerly sleepy town in southern Tanintharyi Region, Dawei has lately become famous as the hub of a massive special economic zone and deepsea port proposed by Thailand. As well as its delicious fruits pineapples, mangoes, mangosteens and durian Dawei is also a major hub for other agricultural produce such as rubber, palm oil and cashew. Iconic Maungmakan Beach, where fishermen cast their nets only metres offshore is also close to the town, while the untouched wonder of the Myeik Archipelago is only a boatride away. THANDWE (Ngapali Beach) Ngapali beach, in Rakhine State s Thandwe township, offers white sand beaches, delicious seafood and perfect relaxation. While other beach getaways such as Ngwe Saung are catching up, Ngapali has an ace up its sleeve it s less than 45 minutes by plane from Yangon, compared with five hours by car to Ngwe Saung. Most of Ngapali s hotels are located inside a wide and protected cove, making for smooth, calm and safe swimming. On the downside, once you re in Ngapali it is difficult to get around. However, small beachfront or roadside restaurants serving the area s fresh seafood and cheap cocktails have sprung up around all of the hotels, so travelling far won t be on the minds of too many visitors. sittwe (Mrauk Oo) The Rakhine State capital Sittwe is the gateway to the ancient city of Mrauk Oo, the former centre of a flourishing Rakhine empire. Mrauk Oo reached its peak in the 15th century and today has a completely different atmosphere to Myanmar s other ancient sites. It is an interesting alternative site to Bagan. Be one of the first to discover these ancient temples, which are accessible from Sittwe by a picturesque boat ride up the surging Kaladan River. Chine villages, home to women with tattooed faces, can be visited by continuing further up the Lemro river from Mrauk Oo. 48 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 49

26 Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations LASHIO Another attraction within Shan State, Lashio is the largest town in northern Shan State and a key stop on the road that links Myanmar with China. For visitors Lashio offers motorcycle treks and hiking tours into the nearby mountains. MYITKYINA Khamti Myitkyina is the capital of northernmost Kachin State, nearly 1500 kilometres from Yangon and even 785 to the north of Mandalay. The city is in a flat valley that is scorching hot during the summer months and sees intense rains during the monsoon. The city sits at the western bank of the mighty Ayeyarwady River, about 40 kilometres downstream from where the river begins. Myitkyina is the terminus of the railway line and a crucial trading and administrative town within Kachin State. The city is also an important location for other touristic ventures in Kachin State. It can be reached by rail, boat or air but while the railway might sound a romantic idea be warned that a one-way trip from Mandalay will take at least 24 hours. Located high in the upper reaches of the Chindwin River, Khamti is an emerging destination that so far sees few visitors. That could change now that travel restrictions on foreign visitors have been largely lifted (some restrictions apply outside the town). While accommodation and other amenities are still basic, the beauty of the surrounding area more than compensates, with the Naga towns of Lahe and Layshi the main attractions. Many visitors choose to fly to Khamti and then take a slow boat back down the river, passing through Homalin, Mawlaik and Kalewa. 50 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 51

27 Myanmar Travel Tips With Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities and dozens of different ethnicities, Myanmar offers travellers a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures to explore. It's possible to plan a one-day intinerary that exposes you to food and traditions with origins in China 'and India and Rakhine and Shan states. While many local practices feature in other societies elsewhere in South and Southeast Asia, however, there are numerous ways in which daily life here is unique and a few business practices that may surprise even the well-travelled visitor. You'll be in good shape if you plan ahead and respect and embrace Myanmar ways. Here are a few things you should keep in mind: Always carry cash. A combination of crisp, new American bills in addition to a good supply of Myanmar notes is a necessity. Shopkeepers will sometimes demand payment in American bills but refuse to accept ones that are dog-eared or torn. The same goes for money changers. If you're travelling outside the major centres, there may be limited or no access to ATM machines. Try the local transport options. In Yangon, riding in a trishaw, also known as a side car, might rightly be perceived as a dangerous proposition. But in smaller centres they're often an effective and fun mode of transport. They're also much more comfortable than they first appear. You can also try pony carts in places like Bagan and Pyin Oo Lwin, and boat rides at Inle Lake. In Yangon, consider riding the circle train. A complete three-hour loop for a foreigner costs about US$1 and gives you a slow, scenic view of various townships. It's okay to bargain, but don't be a cheapskate. In informal transactions, such as at a wet market or negotiating a taxi fare, it's acceptable to bargain for a lower price. The best strategy is to be friendly and consider whether the price you expect will cause your driver or shopkeeper to lose money. Keep in mind that guidebooks go out of date quickly, so a price listed in a guide from just two years ago may not represent today's fair prices. Buses are a great way to travel, but go prepared. While there are an increasing number of short-haul budget flights available inside Myanmar, some places are still most easily and comfortably accessible by buses. For a few extra dollars, a V1P bus will be equipped with airconditioning and extra-wide seating. The food available on board and at rest stops, however, leaves something to be desired. If you want to avoid oily or overpriced fare, stock up before you go on bottled water and snacks. Take a taxi. Standard practice in places like Yangon is to negotiate the fare in advance, since most cars are not equipped with meters and those with meters do not use them. If you don't know what the fare to your destination should be, inquire beforehand with a local or staff at your hotel. Short trips may be as little as K1500, while K4000 should cover a significant distance, depending on traffic and time of day. Expect to pay more after 10pm, but it's reasonable to bargain if you suspect the first-named price is too much. Be in control of your sugar and monosodium glutimate (MSG) intake. First-time visitors to Myanmar are somerimes shocked by the amount of sugar mat locals consume in the form of beverages like tea with condensed milk and fruit juice. Expect that your fresh banana or watermelon smoothie will have a heaping tablespoon of sweetener in it, unless you request otherwise. The way to ask for less sugar is tha jar shob htet par. Similarly, some restaurants add MSG to their food. The way to ask for no MSG is ar cho mhote rna htet ne. Book hotels and guest houses in advance. This is especially wise if you're travelling in peak season. The number of expected tourists to Myanmar has gone up tremendously in me past couple of years, to 3 million in Almough investors are pouring money into the tourism industry, for the moment the supply of hotel rooms is modest. You might consider booking through a travel agent, of which there are many in Yangon and Mandalay. A travel agent can help you save time and stress. Pack a few basic essentials everywhere: Sunscreen, insect repellant, ear plugs and a headlamp or fashlight. As in other parts of Asia, you can find sunscreen and insect spray in local shops and supermarkets but not many of the brands that you would find in Western countries. Bring your own if you want quality assurance. Earplugs are a necessity if you plan to be travelling by bus - most play hours of pop music videos or soap operas, sometimes until wee hours of the morning. A headlamp will save you trouble on days of unexpected power outages, on treks and, in small towns, the hours just before and after dark when electricity may not be available. Off the beaten path really is remote. Be aware that some towns and villages may not have any services geared toward tourists, except for a couple small snack shops. If you're going into areas less accustomed to tourists, plan ahead and be prepared to rough it. Hsipaw, Namshan and Putao, for example, are great places to go trekking. But if you're looking for hot showers and a choice of dinner plans, these places may not be for you. Plan for the season. For most activities, the best time to visit Myanmar is the cool season between November and February. But if you're visiting during the rainy season, June to September, try Upper Myanmar - the plains region of Bagan and Mandalay - which stays relatively dry. If you are visiting in the cool season, also be aware that Bagan and northern regions like Shan State will be chilly enough that you'll want to pack pants, layers and a jacket. How you dress is how you will be judged. Dress across Myanmar tends to the conservative side. You won't see local ladies wearing sleeveless tops, even at me beach, and only in big cities will some girls sport mini skirts or leggings. Expect some extra attention, or reluctant service in small shops, if you do. When visiting a temple or monastery, opt for long pants or the traditional longyi, covered shoulders and no cleavage. Otherwise you may be denied entry or, if you're lucky, you can loan a longyi. A kissing sound will get a waiter's attention. It might seem like a rude thing to do, but whether you're at a tea shop or a beer station, you'll hear locals pucker their lips and make a sound like a cat-call to order a beverage or get the bill. It's perfectly acceptable and much more effective than waving your arms. Forage for your breakfast. Many hotels will provide a complimentary breakfast. It might be convenient, but you're missing out. At street stalls, you can find local breakfast specialties such as mohinga, a fish and noodle curry, and an array of fresh fruits and juices. Tea shops, offer strong cups of milky laphet yey (literally, tea water) and various pastries such as samoosas or Chinese steamed pork buns, depending on the ethnicity of the owners. 52 Yadanarpon Yadanarpon 53
