5 Jennacubbine Tavern, Jennacubbine Jennacubbine Tavern, Jennacubbine In a town with a population that has decreased from three thousand to just three, the Jennacubbine Tavern still manages to quench the thirst of locals and tourists, as it has done for over one hundred years. The tavern originally served as a wayward inn for people taking overnight trips by rail before receiving its first liquor license in 1902 and becoming the Jennacubbine Arms Hotel. Although surrounded by countryside the tavern s proximity to Northam, Goomalling and Toodyay ensures a good crowd from the farming and agricultural districts, and is the only structure in the town of Jennacubbine! The tavern is famous for its fantastic steaks; with the restaurant section officially renamed The End of the Road Steakhouse, for obvious reasons. These are no ordinary steaks grown locally in the Wheatbelt, they are of gargantuan size and melt in your mouth. The two large dining areas and outdoor seating quickly fill up on Friday and Saturday nights when people arrive from near and far for their weekly steak fix. Owner Brett Trew says, We do big servings and the top grade steaks are cooked right in front of you on the central barbecue. There is also a choice of 13 salads and hot vegetables to go with your steak. That s if there is any room left on your plate! With this sort of service and quality of meals, it s no surprise the Jennacubbine Tavern has received a mention on the highly-regarded Mietta s Guide to Australian Restaurant, Cafes & Bars website. Brett and his wife Michelle do a fantastic job of making their patrons feel welcome as they chat to both locals and visitors over the bar and the ambience is increased by the patrons themselves. Four semi-contained comfortable motel units are available at the tavern and bookings are essential, especially on Friday and Saturday nights steak nights! Collins St, Jennacubbine WA 6401 Ph: Jarrahdale Tavern, Jarrahdale Known as the Irish pub in the hills, the Jarrahdale Tavern is a superb spot to visit on a day trip from Perth, especially if you have English or Irish visitors in tow. Owner Joan Peyton, an Irish lass herself, goes out of her way to welcome her visitors and make them feel welcome in true Irish hospitality style. Located on one of the highest points in the area, the pub overlooks the beautiful jarrah forest and is surrounded by two big verandas with a picturesque beer garden. The original structure dates back to 1894 and has been refurbished whilst retaining its original charm. Inside, the walls are graced with plenty of Irish memorabilia including artwork, old coins and the Irish Man s Philosophy ; a must read with a pint of Guinness in your hand. Jarrahdale Tavern, Jarrahdale There are plenty of beers on tap including a couple from Ireland, as you may have guessed, and the food doesn t stop until Joan s customers say so. If someone walks in and they re hungry, we ll feed them no matter what time of day. We have big steaks for hearty appetites and plenty of lighter options too, says Joan. You can sit outside or inside and still enjoy the glorious view through the glass frontage. It really is a unique tavern. The original jarrah bar, named Riley s Bar, is joined by a lounge and dining area providing plenty of room to move. Every Sunday the Jarrahdale Tavern hosts live music with bands playing on the veranda or in the beer garden. As Joan says, This is country living on the city s doorstep. 640 Jarrahdale Rd, Jarrahdale WA 6124 Ph: Discover the real Australia at a WA country pub 5

6 Ravenswood Hotel, Ravenswood Recently celebrating its 100th birthday, the Ravenswood Hotel is one of rich history and old world charm. Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the hotel is known for its peaceful setting, regular live entertainment, great food and friendly atmosphere. The refurbished building is surrounded by large shady trees and grassy areas with the river only metres away. Dolphins are often sighted in the river, right in front of the hotel. But what would a historic pub be without a resident ghost story? The hotel s dining room used to be the home of a particular old photo of Sergeant Thomas, believed to be a friend of the original owners of the Ravenswood Hotel. When the pub was undergoing refurbishments, the picture was moved and peculiar things began to happen. It appeared Sergeant Thomas did not like his photo being moved. 6 Ravenswood Hotel, Ravenswood wacountrypubs.com To get his point across, the cheeky ghost began to play practical jokes on staff. His photo repeatedly fell of the wall, although the glass never cracked. One of the bar staff had her hair playfully tugged on at the witness of customers yet nobody was there when she turned around. So, as owner Jenny Taylor says, Sergeant Thomas got his own way and his picture was moved back to the dining room, where he seems to be much happier and quieter these days. Ravenswood Hotel also has motel units and chalet accommodation providing a comfortable place to lay your head. The charming riverside restaurant offers affordable bistro style dining seven days per week. The hotel also specialises in group and tour bookings. Pinjarra Rd, Ravenswood WA 6208 Ph: Parkerville Hotel, Parkerville Ravenswood Hotel, Ravenswood Avon Bridge Hotel, Northam Even though it may be Northam s oldest pub, the Avon Bridge Hotel has undergone a complete refurbishment over the last two years to create a little piece of city style in the country. The 1858 structure was built in two parts, the original section made of stone now housing the pub s 3TwoTwo Restaurant and function room. Owner Mark McCarthy says this restaurant is without a doubt the best place to dine in town. An a la carte menu featuring a tasty range of seafood, steaks and homemade schnitzels, as well as an all you can eat hot and cold salad bar, draws crowds from near and far. Combining old with new, the hotel contains a lot of original features and has been spiced up with modern Ravenswood Hotel, Ravenswood décor. Retro lounges and lamps, bold colours and a jukebox are just some of the fresh additions to the Avon Bridge Hotel. Ongoing renovations include a welcome extension to the already popular beer garden. We want to create a pub that is city minded yet has a warm feeling, says Mark. The new look has a great loungy atmosphere and really is bringing people out. I m amazed at how many people now visit the pub. Affordable accommodation is available at the hotel in the form of renovated country style motel and hotel rooms that are comfortable and cosy. 9 Priory Hotel, Dongara Bottlenose dolphin, Monkey Mia Diving in Ningaloo Marine Park Bottle Bay, Francois Peron National Park Priory Hotel, Dongara Perched on the Irwin River near the bridge that joins Dongara and Port Denison, the Priory Hotel is a place of great history and unique beauty. Built in 1881, then converted into the St Dominic s Priory by the Dominican Sisters, the Priory Hotel has retained its original features including memorabilia of the nuns. Massive rooms with polished floorboards are now used as guest accommodation with the nun s prayer room serving as a quaint wedding chapel. The hotel is situated on six acres of landscaped gardens home to plenty of birdlife and a large shaded beer garden where you can relax and take it all in. On the first Saturday of each month the Priory Hotel hosts their monthly markets where locals come to sell their arts and crafts. Only minutes from the Dongara town centre, the hotel is understandably popular with locals who come to wind down after a day working at sea. Owner of the Priory Hotel, Wayne Martin, says there is always plenty of banter between his regular customers. As you may have guessed, they are forever trying to outdo each other when it comes to talking crayfish. They re always spinning yarns to each other about how big the cray was or how many they caught. If it s not that, it s about pots getting tangled in the boat s propeller, says Wayne. But let me tell you, they are very secretive about their secret spots. You might have to buy them a beer to get that sort of information! Whether you are after a country-sized meal, a cold beer, or a place to rest your head, the unique setting at the Priory Hotel will have you wanting to return again and again. 11 St Domenics Rd, Dongara WA 6525 Ph: Discover the real Australia at a WA country pub 9

10 Camel Bar, Geraldton Not many hotels or bars in Western Australia can attest they have a life-sized model of a camel but that s exactly what you ll see inside the Camel Bar in Geraldton. The new owners of the pub decided Geraldton needed a themed venue and as a result, the old Murchison Tavern was renovated and decorated with everything related to the desertinhabiting animals. Plush camel teddies hang from the ceiling, the interior décor represents Ronsard Bay Tavern, Cervantes Natures Window, Kalbarri National Park a desert theme and there is even camel steak on the menu at the pub s restaurant! The building itself is around 100 years old and was a popular meeting place for the fishing community of Geraldton. These days, it draws a crowd of all ages who love the unique new décor. There is plenty to see and do at the Camel Bar. Live entertainment from Thursday to Saturday consists of local talent, Perth bands and DJs. The restaurant offers great food including Freemasons Hotel, Geraldton the best wood fired pizzas in town. And one of the main bars at the pub, Armstrong s Beers of the World Bar, boasts a range of 55 beers from all over the world. The beer garden is just the spot to enjoy a wood fired pizza and try an international beer whilst relaxing to the sounds of live entertainment at the Camel Bar. 20 Chapman Rd, Geraldton WA 6530 Ph: Known as a quiet fishing and crayfishing village, Cervantes is one of Western Australia s newest towns. It was only in 1962 that the government cleared the area for development of the new town. The Ronsard Bay Tavern in Cervantes the only tavern in town is a lively meeting place for local fishermen, farmers and holiday makers with crowds growing to standing room only during holiday periods such as Easter. Celebrating its 20th birthday last year, Camel Bar, Geraldton Ronsard Bay Tavern, Cervantes the tavern is relatively new in comparison to other WA watering holes and was built by local farmers from Northampton. Every day the tavern becomes a hub of activity with farmers, crayfishermen and local residents gathering at the bar to spin a few yarns over a coldie. Sure there are fishing reports about the one that got away and aerial tales from windsurfers about how high they flew into the air. But there are not many pubs where you can hear the story about a 200-year-old extinct Madagascan elephant bird egg being found in the dunes! Making the most of their coastal position and fishing industry, the Ronsard Bay Tavern offers a menu specialising in seafood that is all caught locally. Reasonably priced, they boast the freshest crayfish you will ever find! With simple furnishings and friendly service, the Ronsard Bay Tavern is definitely worth a visit if you re a sucker for a great story over the freshest crayfish and an icy cold beer. 219 Cadiz St, Cervantes WA 6511 Ph: wacountrypubs.com

11 Dongara Hotel Motel, Dongara Dongara Hotel Motel, Dongara Known as a quiet fishing village south of Geraldton, Dongara is one of the most beautiful untouched towns on the West Coast. The new owners of the Dongara Hotel Motel have already begun upgrading the property, adding two new beer gardens to the front of the hotel complete with massive permanent umbrellas. A new kitchen and restaurant is already under the helm of two international 5-star chefs who continue to wow patrons with their modern Australian/Asian cuisine. Geneve and Rob Galluccio, owners of the hotel, are proud to state they do the best food in town. At a quick glance you would never guess the hotel was originally built in Although the historical aspect of the hotel has been retained, modern accommodation rooms have all received a fresh lick of paint and new carpet, and the pool has also been treated to a revamp. 13 Plantagenet Hotel Motel, Mt Barker Located in Mt Barker in the wine growing region of the Great Southern, the Plantagenet Hotel Motel offers great food and beer, traditional and modern accommodation and, of course, fantastic local wines. First opened in 1912, the two-storey federation-style building bestows a cosy atmosphere with open log fires. Apple motifs carved into the balcony and veranda posts pay tribute to Mt Barker s history as once being a thriving apple-growing region. During festivals, these motifs were painted red and green to celebrate the humble apple and its worth to the region. Every afternoon locals gather at the bar to share stories of their day, providing tall tales of their respective timber, agriculture and wine making industries. As owner Vic Hayes says, They love to stir each other up with their stories and really get each other going. A trip to Albany would not be complete without a visit to The Earl, as it s affectionately known by locals. Believed to be one of the oldest taverns in Western Australia, a building has occupied the site since Originally owned and operated by the Nesbitt family, the tavern is now hosted by Spencer and Victoria Black, and is Albany s premier tavern. Although the owner and tavern s names are purely coincidental, the irony never fails to provide an interesting topic of conversation at the bar. As with many pubs of this age, the Plantagenet Hotel Motel has an additional friendly guest who feels quite at home and loves to play tricks on the bar staff. A bell used by staff when ordering meals is often set off on its own, even when it s hidden in a drawer. It is thought the ghost is Mary Sounness, wife of orchardist and farmer William Sounness, who built the hotel originally named Park Hotel. Accommodation at the Plantagenet Hotel Motel ranges from traditional hotel rooms with old four poster beds to modern budget motel units. When your appetite beckons for food, you can rest assured there will be something on the menu to satisfy your hunger. The Plantagenet Hotel Motel is a must-do when visiting this region. Even if wine is not your preferred drink, the history and atmosphere of this landmark jewel is more than enough to impress. 9 Lowood Rd, Mt Barker WA 6324 Ph: Earl of Spencer Historic Inn, Albany Renovations in 1988 saw The Earl restored to its original charm with four open fireplaces, heritage décor and a 120-year-old solid jarrah bar that has bared witness to many a tale during its existence. A must see at the tavern is the Nesbitt room, decorated with old family photos paying homage to the original owners of the tavern. As well as customers spending plenty of time in the Nesbitt room, it also seems to attract particular attention from one regular local one whom staff say also Plantagenet Hotel Motel, Mt Barker Earl of Spencer Historic Inn, Albany likes to make doors voluntarily close. The ghostly regular is believed to be Mr Nesbitt himself, dressed in attire reminiscent of the 1800s, and keeping staff on their toes with his mischievous antics. Spencer says, He s very friendly and can be quite cheeky at times. He likes to bang doors very late at night whilst the bar staff are packing up. We don t mind him he watches over the pub for us. English beer lovers will be impressed with The Earl s selection of 15 beers on tap, of which 11 are imported ales, stouts and lagers from the UK, Ireland and Germany. The award-winning leafy beer garden the only beer garden in Albany is the perfect spot to enjoy one of these with friends on a warm day. The Earl s restaurant serves hearty country-style meals ranging from snacks to three courses. Make sure you try one of their famous homemade pies; a match made in heaven with a pint of Guinness! 14 Nannup Hotel, Nannup Rose Hotel, Bunbury The beautiful town of Nannup is mostly known for its timber industry but if you scratch the surface, you may be privileged (or humoured) to hear of other local tales. The Nannup Hotel is just the place to do such a thing. Pull up a pew, grab a beer and prepare yourself for a good old yarn, such as the one about the Tasmanian Tiger (thylacine or Nannup tiger ) still inhabiting the area. Fossils found in caves to the west indicate the thylacine did actually live in the area and many sightings have been reported over the years. In 1970 there was a serious attempt to find the animal but all seriousness quickly diminished when a friendly tiger was found someone had painted stripes on a sheep and added a long tail! Built in 1899 the Nannup Hotel has undergone a series of extensions and alterations to create a genuine twostorey country pub. As the only pub in Nannup, the public bar, sports bar Nannup Hotel, Nannup Nannup Hotel, Nannup and lounge bar are cosy spots to meet friends for a drink. With old fashioned country hospitality, don t be surprised if you make a few new friends while you are there. The restaurant serves good country fare and there is a range of accommodation available including hotel rooms upstairs and fully contained motel rooms. Owner Russell Poliwka might even tell you the story of how he was almost lynched by the town last year, after being forced to close the pub for three days due to a licensee issue. It s the biggest crowd I have ever seen at the hotel. So big, it drew media attention from Perth! he describes. They wanted the pub open and they weren t taking no for an answer. There were even non-drinkers in the crowd screaming don t close the pub. Warren Rd, Nannup WA 6275 Ph: Conto Springs beach, Margaret River Crown Hotel, Collie As the power centre of the West, Collie has always been known for its coal mining industry and dams. In 2006 Collie scooped the National Tidy Town award, assisting the town in becoming a popular tourist destination with a wide range of things to see and do. Winning the award for Best Redeveloped Hotel in 2002, The Crown Hotel is over 100 years old and is home to a range of historical photos from the original mining days. As well as this, the pub has a strong sports theme with the Legends Bar proving very popular with sporting enthusiasts. A whole wall has been dedicated to local sporting heroes with hockey, football and cricket memorabilia all signed of course adorning the walls. Customers can enjoy a drink whilst watching the latest game on the Fox Sport channel but be warned if there is a big game on, the atmosphere and noise level reaches fever pitch! The traditional federation style pub also has a meals area with good pub grub and 16 accommodation rooms upstairs. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights the Crown Hotel puts on a roast carvery that draws a good crowd of hungry locals and tourists. Those who enjoy a spot of live entertainment will be interested to know the pub plays host to the town s very own Collie Idol. The competition is extremely popular and receives a lot of support from residents local to Collie and surrounding areas. If you want to catch this year s round, be sure to head to Collie in July. 17 Cuballing Tavern, Cuballing Wildflowers, near Murchison Cuballing Tavern, Cuballing With its two elaborate pediments and prominent street location, the Cuballing Tavern has seen many changes over the years. Built in 1891 as a seven room galvanised iron structure, it incorporated a brick built kitchen and washroom (laundry) at the back. In 1905/06 the building was destroyed and a new one was erected of brick. The new building incorporated the old kitchen and laundry and three cellars which were built in the foundations. In 1912 a second story was added on, with eleven bedrooms upstairs. New owners purchased the Cuballing Tavern in 2006, adding a welcomed barbecue area and beer garden to the site. To this day the original brick built kitchen and laundry are still being used, one as a store room and the other as a cool room. Part owner Donna Harrison says there is plenty to look at and keep you occupied at the hotel. The original décor has been preserved and spiced up with pool tables, artifacts and pictures Cuballing Tavern, Cuballing of the district, and memorabilia of the now non-existent Cuballing footy team. And what country hotel would be complete without a wall dedicated to Slim Dusty? Although a local watering hole to the farming community of Cuballing, there is another group of regulars who visit the hotel once or twice a year. The Ulysses Motorcycle Club of Armadale do their charity run to Cuballing to pick up a load of pull-tops from cans, saved by Donna throughout the year. These pull tops are then recycled to make prosthetic limbs for third world countries. I keep all the tops for them because it s such a good cause, says Donna. We look forward to their visits every year. Meals are available during lunch and dinner seven days per week at very affordable prices and basic accommodation (in the process of being refurbished) is located upstairs. 8 Alton St, Cuballing WA 6311 Ph: Discover the real Australia at a WA country pub 17

18 Grand Hotel, Mt Magnet Proclaimed in 1895, the small town of Mt Magnet was once a thriving centre for gold. By 1902 it was booming with some 14 hotels, two newspapers, 30 goldmines and a main street as wide as you have ever seen. At the time, the mine located at Hill 50 was producing up to 3,000 ounces of gold a month and was widely regarded as a mine which would last forever. With the breakout of war in 1915, the mine began to fall into decline as many of the miners were shipped off to fight for their country. These days Mt Magnet is home to about 1,000 people, mostly working in the mining industry. The Grand Hotel, built in 1894 and rebuilt in 1924 after a fire, still stands today in all its federation style glory. The hotel is constructed with clay bricks made locally, which are thought Junction Hotel, Murchison to contain a good percentage of gold. Some locals believe it s this very gold that keeps the hotel standing! In the past years minor changes have been made to the hotel such as walls removed to create one big bar, whilst still retaining the charisma of the twostorey federation style pub. A Balinese style upgrade is planned for the beer garden in the near future, adding a little taste of tranquillity to this iconic hotel. Food at the Grand Hotel is very tasty, with the Scottish chef serving up a very popular Reef and Beef. The a la carte menu features a wide range of choices to cater for all appetites. Basic accommodation is also available in the form of comfortable motel units situated alongside the hotel. 10 Hepburn St, Mt Magnet WA 6638 Ph: Dolphin Bay, near Twilight Beach, Esperance Kondinin Hotel Motel, Kondinin In the heart of grain and sheep farming country, Kondinin is known as the gateway to Wave Rock, only a 40 minute drive away. The scenic area is home to a range of tourist attractions including Kondinin Lake, which presently holds water after the drought in The drought was so severe it warranted a visit from Australia s Prime Minister to inspect the surroundings and provide support to the local community. Not long after this visit the heavens opened up, providing much relief for Kondinin and surrounding areas. This is just the start of the stories you may hear at the Kondinin Hotel Motel. One of the most famous stories actually involves the hotel itself. When the original structure burnt down in 1981, the hotel s patrons were forced to enjoy their drinks in a makeshift shed in order to keep the liquor license. According to owner Darren Pool, the temperature inside the shed was usually a lot more than outside. It was a good thing the beer was kept cold in eskies. The family-orientated pub has since been rebuilt and is decorated with the now disbanded local footy team memorabilia including signed guernseys and footballs. At present a new beer garden is being built which will be finished soon. A dining area offers affordable pub grub with something for everyone, including children, whilst accommodation is covered with self contained motel rooms. These comfortable and cosy rooms are extremely popular with local workers so bookings are essential. 33 Rankin St, Kondinin WA 6367 Ph: wacountrypubs.com

19 Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie The Palace Hotel was designed to be the most luxurious hotel outside of Perth and was the first to offer electric lighting and fresh water to bathrooms. Since its erection in 1897 the two storey building, which is made of stone from local Ashlar quarries, has seen a number of historical events and continues to be a landmark building in Kalgoorlie today. Due to its prominent location, the Palace Hotel was often used to deliver public speeches to crowds gathered on the streets below, pictures of which still occupy the walls of the hotel today. The beautiful architecture of the hotel, including the original self support staircase often used for photo shoots, is well preserved and decorated with a plethora of memorabilia and photos from the gold rush. With two bars, a nightclub, lounge café and restaurant, there is an area of the hotel to suit everyone s taste. You can t help but notice the elaborately carved mirror gracing the foyer wall at the Palace Hotel. As you may expect, there is an interesting story behind this mirror involving a certain ex-american President. Herbert Hoover was a regular guest at the Palace Hotel whilst he worked as a mining engineer in the Goldfields during the early 1900s. During this time he reportedly fell in love with a barmaid, who worked at the hotel, before leaving to marry his college sweetheart. He later rose to take the American Presidency in The mirror was his parting gift to the barmaid who then donated it to her employers. It has remained in the hotel ever since. The Balcony Bar and Restaurant Kalgoorlie s only balcony restaurant offers a lavish menu and a 200 strong cellar list. 21 Crossing Inn, Fitzroy Crossing Fitzroy Crossing, West Kimberley Samson Beach Tavern, Pt Samson Crossing Inn, Fitzroy Crossing In an area prone to flooding by the Fitzroy River, the Crossing Inn is these days a lot dryer than it has been in the past. No visit to Fitzroy Crossing would be complete without a visit to the pub, if only to hear the yarns about the awesome power of the Fitzroy River in flood. The first bridge to cross the Fitzroy was constructed in 1935 and made wider in Thought to have been constructed for the sole reason of reaching the pub across the river, the bridge was often closed for months at a time during wet weather. In an act of defiance, travellers were determined to reach the pub despite the rising river and instead used a flying fox, located 200 metres south of the bridge, to reach the other side. During the wet season the river is known to rise over 10 metres and reach places up to 15 kilometres from its banks. The Crossing Inn bore witness to this in the late 1980s as the oldest pub in the Kimberley was washed away by the flood waters. After being rebuilt to include the old homestead and a dining room, the hotel was again subject to flooding in 2002 where the water rose to a level that submerged the bar but failed to destroy the structure. That s the highest I ve ever seen the water, says Jeff Amundsen, who has managed the Inn for over 20 years. Five years on, the Crossing Inn is as popular as ever and never short of a story. Interesting memorabilia decorates the pub including old dingo traps, crosscut saws, branding irons from old stations, donkey saddles and prospecting equipment. If you talk to the right person, you may get a unique story for each piece. There s a good variety of beer on offer and a daily buffet provides an excellent choice of grub. Accommodation is available in Boab rooms located behind the dining room or River rooms (elevated of course) offering river views. Sanford Rd, Fitzroy Crossing WA 6765 Ph: Mitchell Falls, Mitchell River National Park Although not a historical pub, the Samson Beach Tavern or the pub at the end of the road has a spectacular view, fantastic food and ice cold beer. The hotel overlooks Samson Beach and is located above Moby s Seafood Restaurant. With a balcony overlooking the bay, a clear day provides a stunning view all the way to Depuch Island. Inside the tavern you ll find a few old pearling photos with unknown origins. It is assumed the photos hail from places such as Cossack, Broome and Torres Straits. Although fishing still plays a big part in the town s industry it is also home to people in the iron ore and service industries. The tavern has a group of chalets located across the street which are always very busy, as is the 25-bay caravan park on the beach. The food at Samson Beach Tavern is a major drawcard, with owner Russell Brady extremely proud of his new lethal weapon. We have a chef that we got from the Queen Mary cruise liner and he is just amazing, says Russell. We have a great menu. All our seafood is caught locally so you know your barramundi is going to be barramundi. Every Wednesday is half price T-bone night and the place packs out. Then on Thursday we have curry night. Our chef makes a seafood curry that is outstanding. With plenty of beers available on tap, sensational food and a fantastic view, the Samson Beach Tavern is one of the best kept secrets on the Pilbara Coast. 22 Divers Tavern, Broome Divers Tavern, Broome Divers Tavern, Broome Lake Argyle, East Kimberley Dampier Peninsula coastline Divers Tavern, Broome Located along Cable Beach, Broome, Divers Tavern was originally named Divers Camp Tavern due to its proximity to one of the camping areas for Broome s pearl divers. Kim Male and Des Haynes started building the tavern in 1989 and reached completion in At the time Divers Tavern was only the third building in the Cable Beach area; the other two being Cable Beach Club and Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Farm. Today the tavern is a hub of activity and a favourite spot amongst locals, tourists and backpackers. Two big screens inside the tavern draw large crowds to watch major sporting events whilst live entertainment performing in the Beach Bar creates a great place to dance the night away. Well known acts who have performed at Divers Tavern in the past include Jimeoin, Diesel, John Butler Trio and Grinspoon. The tavern offers the most extensive range of tap beer in Broome and a hand chosen wine selection featuring West Australian, Australian and International wines, as well as selections of reserve wines for that very special occasion. The bistro at Divers Tavern is undoubtedly the busiest in Broome with a wide range of menu offerings, air-conditioned indoor seating and relaxed outdoor seating. If you prefer something to nibble on without having to enter the bistro, counter meals are available at the tavern bar. The relaxed, casual atmosphere is true Broome style, suiting locals and tourists alike. Within walking distance to a number of Broome s great resorts as well as the beach, Divers Tavern offers an idyllic spot to relax and have a cold beer whilst watching the sun set. Visit wacountrypubs.com for more country pub profiles by region, itineraries, events, video and your chance to discover the real Australia at a WA country pub by taking the Country Pub s Pool Competition. Beadon Bay Hotel, Onslow Colloquially known as cyclone city, the town of Onslow has seen its fair share of cyclone action with the Beadon Bay Hotel being no exception. Completed in 1927, the two-storey hotel was the only building in Onslow made with anything other than wood and iron. Rather, it was built with imported cement made into blocks on site with steel beams, still visible in the bar, from the original hotel in old Onslow. Despite its sturdy foundations, the Beadon Bay Hotel was almost destroyed during a cyclone in 1934, then suffered severe damage during another in Still standing today, the hotel s walls are home to plenty of cyclone memorabilia, including photos of damage and of the old Onslow township. Owners Peter and Susan Paris are endeavouring to put up even more story-telling pictures and say you can usually get the full story for each picture by chatting to one of the regulars sitting at the bar. Frequented by a good mix of local salt mine workers, salty dogs, offshore workers and tourists, the Beadon Bay Hotel offers an extensive range of beers and a great wine list. Their chef is known for creating great food with specials every night for only $15. Depending on the day of the week, you may be treated to specials including locally caught fish, steak, pizza and pasta, bangers and mash, roast, or ribs. For those too tired to drive, there are 15 backpacker style accommodation rooms upstairs with magnificent views to the ocean. Second Ave, Onslow WA 6710 Ph: *Terms and conditions apply.
