It comprises the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region and Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region, which showcase the important geological themes of igneous rocks and sedimentary rocks respectively. Each region is further composed of four Geo-Areas. In 2009, Hong Kong Geopark became a National Geopark, in 2011, it was accepted as a member of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN), and in 2015, it was renamed Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. By establishing a UNESCO global geopark here in Hong Kong, we can pursue the objectives of conservation, education and sustainable development in both the geo-areas and the neighbourhood areas of the geopark.
