2 SANTA BARBARA POINTS OF INTEREST COUNTY COURTHOUSE 1100 block of Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara call Built in downtown Santa Barbara in 1929, this Spanish-Moorish building is an architectural masterpiece featuring ornately carved doors and archways, imported tiles, hand-painted ceilings, giant murals and wrought-iron chandeliers. For a spectacular, panoramic view of the city, take the elevator up to the clock tower. MISSION SANTA BARBARA 2201 Laguna Street, Santa Barbara call Between the years 1770 and 1825, Spanish Franciscan missionaries built a series of 21 missions, stretching from San Diego to Sonoma, California. Called the Queen of the Missions and the best preserved is Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786 and completed in A self-guided tour includes a museum, gardens, cemetery and the church interior. STEARNS WHARF At the foot of State Street, near the harbor call Most shops generally open in summer daily 10am to 9pm; in winter daily 10am to 6pm. Where State Street ends at Cabrillo Boulevard, Stearns Wharf begins. This wharf has been a landmark of the Santa Barbara coastline for over 100 years. Built in 1872 by John P. Stearns, it now houses seafood markets, gift shops and restaurants and a marine life Sea Center. SANTA BARBARA MARITIME MUSEUM 113 Harbor Way (overlooking the harbor) - call This wonderful museum features ship models, historic exhibits and floating exhibits right at the harbor. There are movies and interactive exhibits, as well. Another nice feature of this museum is it doesn't forget the Native Americans - the Chumash - who were plying the waters off our shores for a very long time. Summer Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 11 to 5 SANTA BARBARA ZOO 500 Ninos Drive - call One of the nation's best small zoos, this is a visit for the entire family. The Zoo was developed like a park, with plenty of picnic and open areas. The animals are easily viewed and the setting is intimate. They say its a small zoo but there are 600 animals! Open 10am- 5pm every day all year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN 1212 Mission Canyon Rd - call Native California plant life, including golden poppies, redwoods and cacti, blanket this 60 acres of foothills in the SantaYnez mountains. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden provides a superb setting for the study of native California flora. More than files miles of self-guided trails wind through meadows, redwoods and streams. MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY 2559 Puesta del Sol Rd - call Hidden among the oaks in Mission Canyon, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is said to be one of the most beautiful small museums in the country. Within its halls are exhibits on mammals, birds, geology, botany and marine life. Your adventure begins outside the entrance, where a large 72-foot Blue Whale skeleton is perfect photo-op for the kids. EL PRESIDIO DE SANTA BARBARA STATE PARK 100 Block of East Canon Perdido Street - call Ongoing restoration and reconstruction of the 18th century Spanish fort which was Santa Barbara's birthplace and the seat of military and civil government for an area extending from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo. Open daily 10:30am-4:30pm; exhibits, slide show, self guided tours. Donation. 1

3 SANTA BARBARA POINTS OF INTEREST OLD SPANISH DAYS CARRIAGE MUSEUM 129 Castillo St - call This museum collection contains scores of carriages, some of which date back more than 200 years. The museum also hosts an impressive collection of saddles, a horse-drawn fire truck, an antique hearse and an old wine cask cart. Once a year many of the carriages return to duty and roll down State Street during Santa Barbara's annual Old Spanish Days Parade. RED TILE WALKING TOUR Downtown Santa Barbara - call Called the "Red Tile Tour" because of the many red-tiles roofs you see on Santa Barbara's oldest buildings, this 12-block, self-guided tour provides a great opportunity to learn about local history. The tour includes historic and cultural landmarks, as well as tucked-away plazas and shopping areas. SANTA BARBARA HARBOR Santa Barbara Waterfront - call Paved walkway offers a scenic half-mile walking tour around the harbor. Yacht Club, Harbor Master's office, restaurants, tackle and supply store. Sea Landing, Truth Aquatics, S.B. Sailing Center offer shoreline boat tours, whale watching, Channel Island trips, sport diving, sport fishing excursions and dinner cruises. There are also boats for rent or charter. SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF ART 1130 State Street - call This museum houses within its collections European, Asian, French and American art as well as classical antiques and photography. While roaming the halls, you can view works by well-known artists such as Monet, Eakins, O'Keeffe, Chagall and Picasso. Lectures, films and performance arts are also offered. SUNDAY ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW Along Cabrillo Blvd., east from State Street - call Established in 1965 by local artists, the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts is the only continuous arts festival of original drawings, paintings, graphics, sculpture, crafts and photography in the world. All items are original art, created by the artists you meet. The show is held on all Sundays and holidays (weather permitting) from 10am until dusk. SANTA BARBARA HISTORICAL MUSEUM 136 E. De la Guerra St - call The Historical Museum houses documents, paintings, costumes and many rare mementos from three different eras. Treasures from Santa Barbara's colorful past exhibited. Spanish, Mexican and American. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 12 Noon-5pm. Closed Monday. Free guided tours Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30pm. KARPELES MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY MUSEUM 21 W. Anapamu St. - call Dedicated to the preservation of the original handwritten letters and documents of the great men and women of the past who have changed and shaped history. Beautifully crafted wooden cases and pedestals are used to display an extensive collection of original and facsimile manuscripts that include books, treaties, letters, maps and music scores. CITY OF SOLVANG 30 minute drive north of Santa Barbara Tourists from all parts of the world come to Solvang to enjoy the Danish-village atmosphere, complete with gas street lights from Copenhagen, working windmills. Horsedrawn streetcars and a prevailing 19 th -century timber and plaster architecture can be seen throughout the city. 2

11 SANTA BARBARA WINE TASTING GUIDE From Andrew Murray, go down Grand Avenue towards 154. Turn left onto 154 and drive until you reach Zaca Station Road (not Foxen Canyon Road, which you will catch up to later). Turn right. If you reach the 101 you've gone about 1/4 mile too far. The next four wineries are straight down this road. Note: Each of the following four wineries have lovely picnic facilities. Firestone Vineyard 5000 Zaca Station Raod, Los Olivos, (open 10-5) Curtis Winery 5249 Foxen Canyon Road., (open 10-5) Though smaller than Napa Valley, there has been tremendous growth of wineries in Santa Barbara county. Currently there are almost two hundred wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms in the county and the number grows each month. Foxen Canyon Trail The Foxen Canyon Trail is a bit more scattered than the Santa Ynez Trail but almost everything is on the same road. The drive is absolutely gorgeous and true California. You won't find a palm tree in sight but you will see a lot of cattle! Although there are several ways to follow the trail, we started in Los Olivos. You can start in Santa Maria - if you do, just go backwards! Andrew Murray Tasting Room A Grand Ave, Los Olivos (805) Winery Foxen Canyon Road, Los Olivos (open 10-6) Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard 6200 Foxen Canyon Road, Los Olivos, (open 10-5) Zaca Mesa Winery, 6905 Foxen Canyon Road, Los Olivos, From here, it's a bit of a stretch to Alisos Canyon Road, which you will come upon quickly. Turn left here to go to the next winery. Bedford Thompson Winery and Vineyard, 9303 Alisos Canyon Road, Los Alamos (open 10-5) Return to Foxen Canyon Road and turn left. Follow the road several miles until you come upon Foxen (quickly - it's very rustic and easy to miss) There's an historical road marker along this stretch of road that is interesting, if not potentially dangerous, to read. Foxen Winery, 7200 Foxen Canyon Road, Santa Maria, (open 12-4) Continue on Foxen Canyon until the road comes upon a field and jogs sharply to the left. The entrance to Rancho Sisquoc is next. Their driveway is long and narrow so be careful when driving down it. Don't bring a bus or awkward vehicle down here - the road's not wide enough. Rancho Sisquoc (with a fabulous picnic area) 6600 Foxen Canyon Road, Santa Maria, (open 10-4) The next two wineries are experiencing road difficulties so you'll have to take a slight detour. Drive until you reach Santa Maria Mesa Road. Turn right. Follow the road around and the two wineries are close together. Byron Vineyard and Winery, 5230 Tepusquet Canyon Road, Santa Maria daily Nov- Mar; 10-5 daily April - October Cambria Winery and Vineyard, 5475 Chardonnay Lane, Santa Maria (open 10-5 weekends and holidays) When leaving you will need to return to Foxen Canyon Road and continue until you reach Dominion. We missed it entirely the first time so watch out. Cotton Canyon is open later than the others so they will be expecting you! 13 SANTA BARBARA WINE TASTING GUIDE Santa Ynez Trail The exact wineries that make up this list vary depending on whose brochure or website you visit. These wineries are rather close together and make for a wonderful weekend project. Picturesque Solvang is on the midst of them all, providing a wonderful place to stay and shop. If you do plan on visiting all the wineries of the Santa Ynez trail, make sure you also swing through the Plam/Mission Meadow Winery that has its tasting room in Solvang. They are in the process of building their vineyard, but they have begun producing wines already. The vineyards in this group are quite varied, but many produce wonderful Cabernet Sauvignons, which they usually taste. Most have tasting fees and offer the logo glass as a souvenir. One tip - if you do plan on visiting many of the wineries, the tasting room guides offered me a bit of advice. Swirl the wine, smell the wine, taste the wine, then dump it out. It's not considered bad etiquette and you will be able to visit more wineries in a given day. Babcock and Melville are only open on the weekends, but they are open during the week by appointment.
