38 Curated Experience CANANG MAKING GEBOGAN MAKING TEMPLE TOUR CAPIL MAKING More than just pretty crafts decorating the streets of Bali, canang sari is a beautiful daily offering created by the locals. The small square of coconut leaf is filled with a variety of vibrant flowers, and is easily spotted throughout the island as a form of the Balinese s thankfulness to the god. A form of offering, gebogan is a towering arrangement of fruits, snacks and flowers. This beautiful arrangement can be spotted in every ceremonies, especially in the temples as a symbol of gratitude towards God. Nicknamed the island of thousand temples, Bali is renowned for its glorious temples, spread throughout the island in various size and purpose. Always a sight to see, these temples provide fascinating architecture and interesting historical stories. 41 THE NORTH A Serene Destination LOVINA BEACH SINGARAJA MENJANGAN GITGIT TWIN FATERFALL Renowned for its sunset and early-morning boat trips to experience dolphin sightings, Lovina beach is located on the top of the island, spanning from east to the west. The capital of Buleleng, Singaraja is the second biggest city in the island. Traces of the former colonial times can still be felt in the area, its historical presence evident through architectural design of the town. Located in the heart of the West Bali National Park, this small island of sandy beach can be reached by boat from the port of Labuhan Lalang, near Pemuteran beach in North Bali. This island is home to herds of deer locally known as Menjangan, giving name to the island. With its enchanting underwater life and crystal clear water, Menjangan is a renowned site for snorkeling and diving. Surrounded by lush tropical trees in Buleleng, Gitigit Waterfall is one of the more popular waterfalls. 42 CENTRE A Serene Destination UBUD MAS VILLAGE BATUAN VILLAGE TARO VILLAGE An artistic haven attracting people all around the world, Ubud s abundance in cultural explorations have long been attracting curious travellers from various parts of the globe. Blessed with beautiful natural landscape in the mountains, Ubud s charms lay in the way culture seem to be the centre of life in the region. Known as the district of wood carvings and sculptures, the village of Mas is situated within Ubud in Gianyar regency. As a well-recognized village of art, Mas Village is the origin of many great artists who found their spirit and inspiration within the artistic community. Recognized for its distinctive style of painting, Batuan Village is a major painting centre with a number of art galleries and societies which played a key role in helping the village grow. This village is also the place where the major Balinese artistic style of Batuan painting first emerged. Nowadays, Batuan is also acknowledged for its wood carvings and traditional dancing. The traditional village of Taro is a peaceful area surrounded by lush green trees in Ubud. 43 THE EAST A Serene Destination BESAKIH TEMPLE TIRTA GANGGA PENGLIPURAN VILLAGE GOA LAWAH TEMPLE Known as the mother temple of Bali, Besakih is regarded as the most sacred temple in the whole island. The large compound encompasses 80 individual temples, and is loved for its dramatic scenery on the Southern slopes of the sacred Mount Agung. As the most important temple, Besakih regularly holds religious ceremonies which gathers people from all around the island. A water palace built by the King of Karangasem back in 1948, Tirta Gangga litterally means water from the Ganges. The beautiful one-hectare complex exudes an air of tranquility, where bodies of water and lush gardens decorate the surroundings. A beautiful sight to be seen, Penglipuran is a charming traditional village preserving the unique Balinese characteristics and culture. This village is acknowledged as one of the top three cleanest village in the world. In this compound, houses are constructed using the traditional methods and have the same size, neatly lining up in the direction of Mount Agung. According to Balinese beliefs, the temple of Goa Lawah is a crucial holy place of worship which gives the island a spiritual balance. 44 CENTRE A Serene Destination TENGANAN VILLAGE Located in the regency of Karangasem, Tenganan is one of Bali s traditional village which retains its original culture. Before the 1970s, Tenganan was one of the most secluded societies of the Archipelago. Rapid changes of developments occurred, and the village started to welcome visitors into its territory. TULAMBEN A small village, Tulamben gained reputation as a popular diving site where The Liberty, a US Army Transport ship was sent sinking by Japanese submarine in The ship is now lying at the bottom of the sea, attracting curious divers from all around. CANDIDASA A quiet seaside escape, Candidasa offers sandy shores and important historical sites. The area is located along the East Coast, far from busier traffics. 45 THE SOUTH A Serene Destination ULUWATU TEMPLE Known as the must-visit temple in the island, Uluwatu Temple is a destination sure to grant magnificent view of the horizon. Perched atop the edge of an ocean cliff, the temple is believed to guard Bali from evil spirits and acts as one of the island s spiritual pillars. Adjacent to the area is a forest, home to hundreds of monkeys which can easily be spotted around the premises. WATERBLOW Situated in the peninsula along the walking path by the shoreline, this place provides a view of natural water explosion. This burst of water is a result of ocean s strong surges crashing into the jagged crack on the cliff, creating a climatic view of waves bursting upwards. With majestic panoramic view of the ocean, Waterblow is an iconic place of attraction in the area of Nusa Dua. PADANG PADANG BEACH Locally referred to as Pantai Labuan Sait, Padang Padang is one of the island s favourite surfing spots. 46 THE SOUTH A Serene Destination GARUDA WISNU KENCANA CULTURAL PARK Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is a cultural site devoted to the god Vishnu and his mount Garuda. The park sits on about 60 hectares of land, where a massive statue is currently on the progress of being constructed, depicting the god riding his mythical bird companion. DREAMLAND BEACH Nicknamed as The New Kuta Beach, Dreamland was once one of the hidden beaches in Bali. The white-sand beach stretched along the rugged coastline of Bukit Peninsula. With its clear water and rugged limestone cliffs, Dreamland is a popular attraction for beach lovers. BINGIN BEACH Breath-taking view of the Indian Ocean and great rolling waves make Bingin Beach a go to destination for surf enthusiasts. Sitting in the Southern part of Bali, the beach is one of the beautiful destinations close to other famous surfing points. The area is recognized for its bright party-centric atmosphere. The long stretch of the beach and consistent waves is also perfect for beginner surfers, with plenty surf lessons and board rentals offered. Stretching north in between Kuta and Seminyak, the street of Legian offers easy access to shops and bars. The area enjoys plentiful visitors, thanks to its lovely beach frontage and laid-back atmosphere. An established shopping and entertainment area, life is always vibrant in seminyak. Many of the island s most famous restaurants and bars find home in Seminyak, and visitors are always looking forward to watch the sun goes down in this lively place. 48 THE WEST A Serene Destination TANAH LOT The temple of Tanah Lot is located in Tabanan, sitting on a large offshore rock which has been naturally shaped by the ocean tide over the years. The main deity of the temple is Dewa Baruna, the god of the sea. As one of the seven sea temple of Bali, Tanah Lot has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. TAMAN AYUN TEMPLE Situated in Mengwi Billage, Taman Ayun Temple is the second largest state temple complex in Bali, its name meaning temple in a beautiful garden. True to the name, the temple consists of beautiful architectures, green gardens and a big fishpond surrounding it. PEJATEN VILLAGE Red clay pottery and ceramic arts take the spotlight in this village.
