5 The case of Zakynthos Zakynthos Marine National Park Marine area: 89 km² Terrestrial area: 14.2 km² Peripheral area: 31 km² Created in 1999 Managed by the Management Agency of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos Main objective: to protect and manage one of the most important loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting areas in the Mediterranean Sea while maintaining and developing economic activities
