5 GENERAL INFORMATION Landscape Two types of relief are typical for the municipality of Sliven: hilly and mountainous to the north, and plain to the south. The city's elevation varies between 180 and 300 m (590 and 984 ft) above sea level. Climate The municipality of Sliven falls into the sub-balkan fields of the transitional continental climatic area. The winters are mild, the summers are relatively hot. Autumns are longer than springs. The local Bora wind is typical of Sliven. For daily forecast, please visit: Foggy days 46/ year Waters With an area of 7,880 sq. km / 4,885.6 sq. miles, the river of Tundzha is the main water resource in the municipality. The river water is used mainly for irrigation. The Zhrebchevo dam on the Tundzha, 25 km/15.5 miles away from Sliven, has a capacity of 400 million cubic meters. Many pumping stations and water catchments have been built, providing a peak flow between 50 and 100 l/sec. The Asenovets dam with a capacity of 28,2 million cubic meters is the main water source of the city. The municipality of Sliven is also rich with spas. Their water has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of ventricular, liver, locomotory and peripheral nervous system diseases. 7 MUNICIPAL INFORMATION The Municipal Council is the local legislative body. The Council defines the Municipal Development Policy and exercises control on its implementation. The Mayor is the local executive body. The transport network of the Sliven municipality is completely constructed. The total th st length of the 4 class roads is 321 km/199 miles. 12 Railway transport Two railways run through the territory of Sliven municipality : Sofia - Karlovo - Sliven - Bourgas: railway No 3 Sofia - Plovdiv - Yambol - Sliven - Bourgas: railway No 8 The railways No 3 and No 8 are directed west-east and are of great importance for industry as well as for tourism. The existing railway system satisfies completely the need of the region. The constructed gas distributing network allows gas-supplying of the residential districts which are not included in the central heating system. This will increase the potential of gasifying more households and companies, will decrease the electricity consumption and will optimise the energy consumption and environment protection. 14
