3 Dr. Liye Xie Introducing Our Newest Faculty Member We are pleased to welcome Professor Liye Xie, whose research focuses on people in the past. She specializes on the production, reproduction and consumption of bone and ground/polished stone tools, spanning the incipient - gies, Professor Xie s work demonstrates that activities and conceptions associated with technology are closely tied to almost all aspects of human lives, in prehistory as today. These links range from basic considerations, such as resource management and production, to the division of labor, cultural trans- Valley. It will focus on the concentration of power through recruiting labor and craftspeople in large prehistoric architectural projects. Minoan Architecture Conference The workshop From Static Data to Dynamic Processes New Perspectives on Minoan Architecture and Urbanism was co-organized by Dr. Quentin Letesson (Department of Art, University of Toronto & Département d archéologie et Toronto). Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC Canada) and the Fonds assess the current state of research, stimulate fruitful cross-disciplinary approaches, and outline promising agendas - sion buildings and urban environments as inherently dynamic processes. 2

Beginning in 1976, Joe and Maria undertook major excavations that have shaped our knowledge of the major harbour, monumental Minoan palatial

6 Campaign News: Honouring Joseph and Maria Shaw Professors Emeritus Joe and Maria Shaw have dedicated nearly 40 years of study to Minoan Crete and Greek archaeology in the Aegean area. As enthusiastic and inspirational educators, both in the classroom friendship and research, we are honoured to establish the Joseph W. and Maria C. Shaw Graduate Scholarship in Archaeology. Beginning in 1976, Joe and Maria undertook major excavations that have shaped our knowledge of the major harbour, monumental Minoan palatial buildings, massive stone storage complexes, a Minoan town we successfully raised $50,000, which has enabled us to take advantage of a matching opportunity through donors, who have celebrated the achievements of Joe and Maria, while also opening doors for future gener Joe Shaw assisting excavation Maria and Joe Shaw in the field on Crete 5 Maria Shaw working with the local community
