It is a city with a long history, as its area was inhabited since prehistoric times. The etymology of the word comes from "Hydrama" - "Dyrama", due to the abundance of the waters spilling in the area. History Since prehistoric times, the area of Drama seems to have inhabited the settlement of Arkadikos. Towards the end of the classical or early Hellenistic period (end of the fourth or beginning of the third century BC) in the place of Drama was created a city, the inhabitants of which cultivated the vine and worshiped the god Dionysus, in a special sanctuary. In Roman times, the village is mentioned (by Tabula Peutingeriana, VII), under the name Daravescos, as a Roman station of a branch of the Egnatia road, which started from Philippi and, passing the torrent of Agia Varvara and beyond Angitis River, brought it to Serres and then to the ancient Herakleia Sintiki (meaning Sidirokastro Serron). With the founding of the Roman colony of Philippi (42 BC), Daravescos was administratively governed by it. The village remained active during the Byzantine times. Occupied by the Ottomans in 1371 (or 1383). In 1530 there were 143 Christian and 96 Muslim households. In the Revolution of 1821, the Dramians offered their services in the national struggle despite the difficult position they were in, as Drama was a military center of the Ottomans in the Southern Balkans. The grammatist, Dramalis Manasis, who played a double role in the Battle of Dervenakia, the family of Dimos Nicolaou, who fought in many battles, Michael Dramalis, as well as the chieftain Demetrios Dramalis who fought in Crete, is remarkable. A great fighter of 1821, was also Sergeant Nikolaos Dramalis. At the same time with the development of tobacco cultivation in the region, the first labor movements in Greece were created. The first labor strike took place in May 1888 in Drama, with the main demand for ten hours of work, since at that time the workers worked from twelve to thirteen hours a day. During the Macedonian struggle, with the leader and coordinator of the bishop of Drama Chrysostom (later a martyr by the Metropolitan of Smyrna), there were great Dramians Macedonian chieftains, such as Constantine Rizos, Chrysostomos Papageorgiou and Nikolaos Petrikis. The leading figure was also 4

6 Konstantinos Dodellas. On September 14, 1905, the 20-year-old Macedonomach Armen Kuptsios was led by the Turks to the city Square, where he was executed by hanging. Drama came under occupation by the Bulgarians during the First Balkan War from October 1912 in June 1913 (1st Bulgarian Occupation). It was liberated and united with the Greek state on July 1, 1913, during the Second Balkan War. From 1913 and the following years, many Greek refugees from various regions of Eastern Thrace and Eastern Rumelia began to settle in Drama as they suffered persecution and violence. Thus, the Thracians from Ortakioi created the Ortakinas settlement in Drama, while the Thracians from Stenimacho created the settlement Nea Stenimachos. During the First World War (in 1916) Drama was occupied for the second time by the Bulgarians. During the Second Bulgarian Occupation ( ), the Greek population suffered persecution and starvation as well as arrests and torture by the secret Bulgarian police and occupying Bulgarian army. Still, the relics and treasures of the Monastery of Panayia Eicosifinissis of the Metropolis of Drama are being held in Bulgaria. At the same time a tough measure of extermination of the population was implemented by the Bulgarians: the displacement and hostage of thousands of Greek residents, including almost all of the priests, of Eastern Macedonia in concentration camps and forced labor in Bulgaria. More than a quarter of expatriates lost their lives from deprivation, torture and extermination, and never returned to their homeland. The Bulgarian occupation army departed in 1918, with the end of the war. After the Mikrasiatik catastrophe in 1922 and the population exchange in , many Greek refugees from various regions of Eastern Thrace, Eastern Rumelia and Asia Minor (Ionia, Bithynia, Cappadocia, Pontus, Lykaonia, etc.) settled in Drama. With the entry of the Germans to Greece in April 1941, during the Second World War, German and Bulgarian troops captured Eastern Macedonia. The Bulgarians then launched a systematic population exchange of Dramians, which however encountered the strong reaction of its inhabitants. The first massive popular rebellion in Greece that received purely militant and revolutionary character occurred in the area of Drama, specifically on September 28, 1941, when the people of Drama and the surrounding villages ravaged and dismantled the Bulgarian authorities. This spontaneous uprising is violently oppressed by the Bulgarians. On September 29, 1941, the Bulgarian occupying forces, applying harsh reprisals, executed 3,000 patriots in the city of Drama, Prossotsani, Choristi, Doxato, and in the villages of Kyrgia, Koudounia, Adriani, Agios Athanasios, Kokkinogheia, Mikropoli, Haritomeni, Fotolivos, Sitagroi, Mikrokampos, Mylopotamos and Mavrotopos.These events had a shocking effect on the whole underlining Greek people. The Bulgarians eventually abandoned Drama in October Culture Events-festivals Various cultural events take place in Drama throughout the year. One of them is the "International Short Film Festival" every September. Another important event is the "Dramaica Youth Festival", which takes place annually in the area of the sources of Aghia Varvara in which take part bands from all over Greece. One of the biggest Christmas festivals in the country, Oneiroupoli starts every December. A magical Christmas village is being setup in the municipal gardens that reminds the corresponding Christmas villages of Central Europe. Finally, in the first week of June, the "Oinogeusia event with the subject of wine and the art of its production but also its enjoyment, as well as the rich local gastronomy. 5

7 Museums The Archaeological Museum. It covers the human presence in the prefecture of Drama from the Middle Palaeolithic Age (50,000 years ago) up to the Newer Years (in 1913). The Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Drama. In it are exhibited objects of worship of the orthodox church coming from the temples and monasteries of the city and the wider region. Among the exhibits are relics of refugees from the Micrasiatik areas, as well as objects of Saint Chrysostom, Bishop of Drama (and later martyr of the Metropolitan of Smyrna). The Drama Trains Museum, which was created by the Educational Cultural and Athletic Association of Railway Employees "IFAISTOS", a memory from another era. A time when Drama was in growth and the Rail Station of Drama also contributed to it. The Folklore Museum of Drama. Sports Facilities There are two large courts in the city and other smaller ones. One large stadium is the seat of the football club Doxa Dramas and has a capacity of 7,000. The other large stadium is the Municipal (former National) Stadium of Drama. The 1,600-seat municipal closed-circuit gymnasium "Krachtidi" has served as a national basketball court in one Eurobasket tournament and is the seat of the basketball team of the city (K.A.O.D). Population Population of Drama/per decade Transportation Drama is connected to the country's rail network. Every day, 2 trains run through the city station to Thessaloniki and 2 to Alexandroupoli. Drama has a bus station, which connects it with neighboring cities, as well as large urban centers. Urban buses are used for nearby villages. Drama is connected to the Egnatia Motorway with 2 roads (towards Amphipolis / Thessaloniki and Kavala / Thrace). The nearest port is that of 6

8 Kavala. There is no airport in Drama and is served mainly by Great Alexander Airport in Kavala and Macedonia airport in Thessaloniki.
