3 General Information Known throughout the world as the City of Light, Paris, the capital of France, is celebrated for its beautiful boulevards, inspiring monuments, impressive works of art, delicious French cuisine and elegant couture. Paris was founded more than 2,000 years ago. It was initially in the middle of the River Seine, the Ile de la Cite, but quickly spread to both banks of the river, the rive droit (right bank) and the rive gauche (left bank). The right bank is known for being the commercial heart of the city while the left bank is home to the University of Paris and all that is intellectual and arty. Paris has always been known to have the aura of romance and mystery and has been the setting for many novels and movies. Millions of people visit Paris every year; and with so much sightseeing, culture and romance to experience, your stay will no doubt leave you longing to return. The attractions in Paris are endless. Cutting a line through the city, starting at the Place de la Concorde, the Champs Élysées is one of the grandest avenues in the world. Its broad tree-lined boulevard packed with gorgeous architecture, great shopping and fabulous restaurants runs straight through all the way to the Arc de Triomphe. To describe the Eiffel Tower as the most iconic feature of the Parisian skyline would somehow still be an understatement. A lift services the viewing platforms which show the nuts and bolts of just how incredible an achievement this construction is, as well as offering spectacular views across this stunning city. At the very top, it is said that the platform feels like it is swaying underfoot in the wind. Still widely admired as the bohemian hub of Paris, Montmartre is home to the stunning, white-domed Basilica of Sacré Cœur, standing proudly on the highest point of Montmartre hill. Famous artists such as Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh all had studios in this quaint area of Paris. Situated next to the River Seine, in the picturesque fourth arrondissement of Paris, is one of the world s most famous gothic cathedrals of all time Notre Dame. Meaning Our Lady, this breath taking building is widely praised as one of the finest examples of French gothic architecture ever built. Sightseeing in Paris is as much about famous monuments as it is about the everyday hum of the cafes and bookstores. The panache of Paris at street-level is breath taking and it is little wonder that Audrey Hepburn once mused that Paris is always a good idea. This Pan- European emergency number 112 can be called from any telephone (landline, pay phone or cell phone). Voltage and sockets vary from country to country and so an adapter and also a transformer will be necessary Make sure you bring these with you, or else you might risk kissing your favourite electric razor or hairdryer goodbye, not to mention blowing the electricity in the whole hotel! If you ve forgotten to bring these important accessories, you ll be able to find them in electrical goods and DIY stores or hypermarkets. Most major hotels can also provide them. For information, French plugs are equipped with two round pins. Public Toilets In Paris you will find 12 superloos, open from 6.00am to 10.00pm, and 24 lavatories, open from 10.00am to noon and from 1.00pm to 6:15pm. 6 While cafés do not always welcome people using their toilet facilities without having a drink/food there, department stores offer free facilities. Shopping centres and arcades also usually have toilets, some free, some not. You have to pay to go to the toilets in railway stations ( 1), but they are free at the airports. Greeting When meeting someone for the first time, whether in a social or a professional setting, it s appropriate to shake hands. However kissing is also a popular greeting in France generally with two bisous, which are more like air kisses with cheeks touching lightly. Sightseeing/Shopping Etiquette Be aware of your surroundings and lower your voice accordingly, especially in churches, museums, restaurants, theaters, cinemas, and the métro. When entering and leaving a shop, greet and say good-bye to the staff. A simple bonjour, monsieur/madame and au revoir, merci are considered very important for politeness. When asking for directions or other help, be sure to preface your request with a polite phrase such as excusez-moi de vous déranger, madame/monsieur (excuse me for bothering you, ma am/sir). 6 The Paris Parade Festival, 2015 Information & Itinerary Guide

7 Eating and Drinking Etiquette During a meal in a restaurant in Paris bread is broken rather than cut, and it should be placed next to the plate instead of on the plate. If you have been served a whole piece of cheese make sure not to cut it off the point (or nose ) and instead to cut it at the angle. Coffee or tea is ordered after dessert, instead of with dessert. In fact, coffee and tea usually aren t ordered with any courses during meals, except breakfast. Eating whilst walking down the street is not very acceptable in Paris as there are plenty of cafes, boulangeries and patisseries that you can pop into for a quick snack. Some Parisians do drink coffee on the go, however again the majority still drink it in a café. Dress Code Parisians are famously stylish, however for your week in Paris you will be doing lots of walking and sightseeing in unpredictable weather. Therefore, when you are deciding how to dress it is important to find the right combination of substance, elegance, comfort and creative flair! Keep it simple. Parisians have a plain, timeless elegant style. To fit in understated is what it s all about. Accessorise (especially with scarves). Keep belongings safe have money belts and zip up bags. Tipping One of the most confusing things for visitors to Paris is figuring out the tip system. In France by law a 15% service compris is always included in the price wherever you eat or drink. It is however pretty common to leave something after a bite to eat or drink but it s never expected and is only given for good or attentive service, Rough guide: Cafes: Common to round up a check i.e. if its 3.70 leave 4. Restaurants: Leave approximately 1 for every 20 i.e 60 meal you would leave 3 Taxis: Add 1 or 2 onto your fare depending on distance travelled. Consider the weather it may be a little chilly and wet in December/January. Pack practical clothing plenty of walking so flat shoes and layers of clothes for indoor outdoor temperatures. Take a coat, hat, gloves. Black is always in style! Slimming, looks good and hides food stains, its perfect! The Paris Parade Festival, 2015 Information & Itinerary Guide 7

24 Transport The Paris system is a leading tourist attraction in its own right. The first line of the underground subway system began operation in 1900 and today the Paris has grown to include 14 lines that connect Paris via its subterranean tunnels. With over 300 stations, it s easy to travel anywhere within the city. The is safe and clean and easy to use. The lines are color-coded and numbered, and are named according to the station at the end of the line. When you travel on the, as long as you know the number of the line and name of the station you cannot go wrong. Please refer to the map at the end of this book. When out and about look for a big black M on a round yellow sign for the stations. The operates every day including public holidays from 5.30am to 12.30am (2.30am on weekends) the following morning. Trains run every 2-4 minutes on all lines. Passes and Tickets All (politan) tickets are one fixed price regardless of the length of the journey or the number of changes (Correspondences) that you make. You can buy a single ticket for each journey. A single ticket costs 1.70 and allows unlimited travel and transfers within the for up to 90 minutes. However for better value and to save you having to find change and buy a ticket at the station every time, we recommend buying a book of ten tickets (un carnet de dix), where you would use 1 ticket for each journey that you take. You can share the carnet de dix with friends if you don t want all 10 tickets for yourself. There are four lines (A, B, C, D) and each one spurs into numerous directions once outside of Paris. The RER and lines do connect at various points and though the RER is not designed to be used for very short distances, it makes longer distance traveling across the city or from city to suburb incredibly easy and efficient. Taxi Taxi charges are fairly reasonable and are all metered, so you are able to see the cost of your journey at all times. Fares vary depending on the zone you are in and the time of day. A daytime journey within central Paris should cost between and You can get a taxi either by: Going to a taxi rank (470 in Paris) Hail a taxi on the street. If it has its light on it is libre free for hire. Telephoning for one although you will be charged for the taxis journey to pick you up. Paris taxis are generally saloon cars and drivers will only take a maximum of 3 passengers. 24 The Paris Parade Festival, 2015 Information & Itinerary Guide
