THE UNEXPLORED PATRIMONY ROUTES: FINDING A DIFFERENT TOLEDO The Consortium of the City of Toledo started its Unexplored Patrimony routes in June These routes include free-guided visits to various monuments, archaeological sites and other places of interest that were inaccessible to the public for many years in some cases centuries and have recently been recovered and made available by the Consortium. > POINTS OF INTEREST 1 The Roman Baths of square of Amador de los Ríos 2 The Caves of Hercules 3 The Jewish House 4 The Mosque-church of El Salvador 5 The Cardenal Cisneros Basements 6 The Church of San Sebastián 7.1 The Baths of Tenerías 7.2 The Baths of Ángel 7.3 The Baths of Caballel 7.4 The Baths of Cenizal 8 Convent of Santa Isabel 9 Crypt and tower of the convent of the Sisters of the Conception 10 Roman remains under Alfonso X 11 Comendadoras Convent 12 The Well of El Salvador 13 Islamic Halls 14 The Tower of San Román 15 The roman ruins at nº19 calle Nuncio Viejo Individual and group visits are available. If visiting with a group, reservations are strongly recommended in order to guarantee space. Visits can be arranged at the Consortium s Cultural Resource Management Centre, found at the Roman Baths of Plaza de Amador de los Ríos. During a visit to the Cultural Resource Management Centre, visitors will be able to observe the remains of the Roman baths, following a wooden walkway placed over different elements such as the Roman water channels, medieval water deposits, prehistoric walls and Roman floors made with opus signinum. The Unexplored Patrimony routes were created as a way of establishing a strong link between the citizens and their cultural heritage, by allowing the recovery of these archaeological sites to serve as a source of knowledge, all while providing something useful for people to enjoy the city. All monuments included in the route show a different Toledo, hidden during centuries and which is now starting to be restored and be visible again. These places hold unique elements from various periods in our history, which played an important role during their time and are now part of our cultural heritage.

The Roman Baths of Plaza de Amador de los Ríos 01.

Discovered in 1986, the archaeological remains at the site show the impressive buildings and monuments of the city of Toledo during Roman times, designed and built with the latest Roman urban development models at the time, and with a clear influence from the capital of the Roman Empire: the city of Rome. <View Archaeological remains of the Roman baths at the Plaza of Amador de los Ríos. The archaeological remains found at the site are a point of reference for the construction systems and processes used in Roman Engineering and Architecture, some of which were a true technological revolution in Hispanic times such as the use of limestone concrete (Opus Caementicium) or arches made with stone voussoirs. These innovations are represented here, with a channelling section or arched gallery made with Opus Caementicium and an arch composed of dressed granite voussoirs, which were part of the clean water supply of the city, in particular and given its dimensions, the supply of the most important public buildings. An architectural complex was used over these structures, which were solely to be used as baths. The remains described here include at least two rooms: we lack enough information about the first one to give an accurate description, but the second one has a rectangular base (approximately 12 x 10 m: 120 m2), and the surface below the floor had a heating system (hypocaust) used to heat the room, in order to create an atmosphere similar to that of a sauna or hot room (caldarium) a basic element in the Roman bath ritual, present in all bath constructions at the time. The dimensions of this caldarium, the careful planning of its construction and the materials used for decoration (marble, statues) help us identify this building as a public place, erected under the influence of the Imperial power. As regards the chronology of the remains, they correspond to a period between the end of the I century and mid II century AD. The building started to suffer from the passing of time and was affected and reused by new structures built later on: the silo from the XII to XIV century, the two water deposits built on the western area going back to the XVI century, or the iron pillars that supported the structure built on the current building erected at the beginning of the decade of the 1990 s.

The Caves of Hercules 02.

The Caves of Hercules site (San Ginés 3) presents a rich architectural history, occupied by buildings from various periods throughout history: a well built in Roman times supplied water to the city as part of the hydraulic system of Toletum. During Visigoth times, a Christian temple seems to have been erected over the well, followed by a mosque, and in the XII century a new temple in homage of Saint Gines, as headquarters of the homonymic parish. New and interesting data has resurfaced regarding the Roman well. Research indicates the structure was built in the second half of the AD I century, in a rectangular base 6.00 x m, 4.00 m high. The structure used small stones held together with lime plaster and sand concrete (opus caementicium), while the interior was plastered with special hydraulic cement (opus signinum). Later changes to the well during Roman times included partially covering the interior with granite covered voussoirs, and dividing it in half with three large granite arches. Over the two resulting spaces, linked through the arches, two large cellars were built in white limestone (only one of the cellars is the property of the Consortium today). View Roman cellars in which can be seen the exploration efforts of Cardinal Siliceo. > Several legends surrounding the origins of the Caves of Hercules are known today. According to medieval texts, the Caves were hollows where Hercules, founder of the city, would provide an architectural structure to set up one of his palaces a place where magic arts and necromancy were practised. Other legends relate to the destruction of the Visigoth kingdom in the hands of the Arabs. According to the texts, Hercules used his clairvoyant abilities to write about the destruction of the Visigoth reign, but left it in a locked chest indicating that each king added another lock. It was king Don Rodrigo s curiosity, or greed, that drove him to open the chest, thus releasing the curse of the prophecy. The legendary Caves of Hercules are first linked to the San Gines cellars in the XVI century, and the first, albeit failed exploration is attributed to Cardinal Siliceo. <The legend surrounding the Caves of Hercules involve both Roman and medieval remains.

> The Jewish House The basement was possibly used for Jewish purification baths. 03. Detail > of the courtyard and facade..

The Jewish House is in the heart of the Jewish part of Toledo. Two spaces are of particular interest: the courtyard with its variety of carved plaster, and the basement, which was likely used as a mikveh or Jewish purification bath intended for spiritual purification, or in preparation of an important event in the life of a Jew. During restorations of adjacent rooms, Almagra style hydraulic plastering has been uncovered, as well as a cistern, all of which support the theory about its use. Another element of archaeological relevance is a wooden piece used as a lintel, which facilitates the access to the basement. Carved with great detail in floral motives using tympanum and volutes, the piece is adorned with an epigraphic repertoire that reads: Thanks I give you, because you have answered my prayers ; text related to verses 21, salm 18: Here is the door of Yahveh, through which the righteous come in. 21 thanks I give you, because you have answered my prayers, and it has been my salvation, which welcomes the congregation to the interior of the house. Overall the intervention of the Consortium of Toledo unveils a house whose origins date back to the XIV XV centuries, reminiscent of Mudejar architecture with possible uses in Hebrew purification baths, and several transformations done in subsequent centuries, with emphasis in the XVIII and XIX centuries. Legend has it that this house belonged to the Jewish Ishaq, who lent money to queen Elisabeth the Catholic in exchange for her jewels, in order to finance the journey where The Americas were discovered.

The Mosque-church of El Salvador 04.

Traditionally this temple has been identified with a mosque, which is supported by two facts. The first and most important was the discovery of a plaque at the chapel of Santa Catalina. It commemorates the construction of a nave in the year 1041 (432 H.), although it does not indicate whether it was an extension of the building or the refurbishment of a previously existing nave. The second one, equally valid for identification purposes, is the reference dated 1159, which indicates the conversion of the building to Christian worship. Since it was made into a Christian church in 1159, the building has undergone numerous transformations including two fires, one in the sixteenth century and another one in The existing church is the result of this last reconstruction. The first phase of the value enhancement work took place years ago with the excavation and recovery of the courtyard of the old parsonage house. Later, renovations were made inside the church as specified in the scope of the project. The oldest remains discovered during the excavation correspond to the Islamic mosque that stood in the location of the current church, dating back to the ninth to twelfth centuries. Its space is divided into three naves perpendicular to the qibla wall. The arcade is located between the central nave of the current church and the nave of the Epistle. It is made of seven abutments, six of which are Roman columns and one a Visigoth pillar, richly decorated with scenes of Christ s miracles and various geometric patterns. The capitals and cyma moulding are reused Roman and Visigoth pieces. Resting on them are toothed horseshoe arches made of brick, except the key which consists of an ashlar. The rehabilitation and value enhancement work of the old parsonage house s courtyard began in late May 2004, and concluded in April The site points to a first phase of Islamic occupation (ninth-tenth centuries), built on a Late Roman-Visigoth layer. On the ruins of these structures rest the arcade, which consists of three columns with their respective capitals two of them Roman dating to the first half of the second century, and one of them Visigoth. These columns support four horseshoe arches, made of brick and mortar, framed by alfiz adornments and topped by a corbel cornice, very similar to that of the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, which suggests that it dates to around the eleventh century. <Interior courtyard with Islamic arcade, Roman and Visigoths capitals. 12 The Cardenal Cisneros Basements,

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Consortium for the City of Toledo, as part of its program for the rehabilitation of special elements in historic-centre homes, we have the oportunity of visiting the reconstruction of the Islamic Basements at Cardenal Cisneros, 12. < Archaeological remains of an old house dating back to the Islamic Caliphate era. Located in the city s central areas, items of cultural value here give us great insight into the historical evolution of Toledo s urban design and architecture. This space features the archaeological remains of an old house dating back to the Islamic Caliphate era. A patio and living room area survive, as well as the remains of their architectural decoration consisting of two horseshoe arches, one of which is double. Restored fresco Hand of Fatima surrounded by birds. < This ancient house was built directly on the geological soil, which in this area drops sharply to the south and is therefore filled with rubble and debris from previous phases of Roman and Visigoth constructions, whose building materials were reused in the new Islamic construction. Both the patio and living room on its northern side were part of the ground floor of the original building, virtually at the same level as adjacent streets. Given the quality and care of the decorative elements used in the construction, we are in the presence of a house that may have been related to buildings nearby, being of great importance in its time as in the case of the mosque Aljama in the city. Worth highlighting is the discovery of wall decorations which include the figurative motifs found on the double arch, whose side posts feature two Hands of Fatima or hamsa, one of them surrounded by a stylized figure of three birds (probably hummingbirds, judging by their slightness and long beaks). Both motifs are typical in Islamic art, and represent protection and rejection of evil influences, particularly against the evil eye (Hand of Fatima) and perhaps funerary (birds). The two motifs are of pre-islamic origin that could have strong popular roots. They were tolerated to some extent by official Islamic doctrine, although as in the case of the birds, they came from a non-official oral tradition attributed to Muhammad, which identifies them as carriers of the souls of righteous believers in their journey to Paradise.

The Church of San Sebastián 06.

The church of St. Sebastian is located in the area known as Barrio de Curtidores, inside which it provides a setting for defensive structures such as bab al-dabbagin or puerta de los Curtidores (the Tanner s Gate), probably located near the church grounds. According to documents and research of the walls and ruins discovered during this renovation, it has been concluded that the current church of St. Sebastian was occupied from the tenth century right up to the twentieth, firstly during the Islamic period then during the Christian period. Amongst the oldest ruins still in the building, we find part of a horseshoe arch in the wall that divides the nave of the epistle with the nave of the small chapel linked to an Islamic bonding that could be associated with the building s Islamic period. Documents show brick tiling attached to this wall at the same height as the entrance of the arched gate. The demolition of the Islamic building to make way for the church probably took place at the end of the twelfth or the thirteenth century. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries some minor renovations are carried out, although it is not very clear exactly what is done. The renovation work in this second period is where we can pinpoint the date of the church s present tower, whose bonding can be dated to the fifteenth century. Archaeological reports and written documentation prove that renovations begin in the sixteenth century. The directional change of the building probably occurred in the eighteenth century, a period when the arch in the small chapel s nave was filled up and replaced by the altarpiece. In 1916 the last renovation work begins. It is here when the restoration of the ceiling of the epistle s nave is done, just as it appears in the inscription in the concave moulding that travels to the top part of its walls. < View interior of the church of St. Sebastián During the restoration work, great care was taken with the materials, colours and textures to blend in without looking out of place. They have managed to restore rather than replace. Following archaeological criteria, original remains of the site are evident together with the newer discoveries.

The Baths of Tenerías, Ángel, Caballel, and Cenizal Baths of Ángel Baths of Caballel >. < 07. > Baths of Cenizal > Baths of Tenerías

Baths in the world of Islam were a very important and common practice, and this became a habit that had a big effect in other religious groups, even out of the peninsula. There were private and public baths that covered the demands of all social groups and, therefore, became a building with many functions and different purposes: hygienic, religion and social purposes. The Islamic Baths of Tenerías are composed of a series of structures related with water and the Muslim world, built with brick and divided in different rooms or halls, where the roof had disappeared centuries ago. These are accesses through a door that was built on an enclosure surrounding the site, in addition to a path that also surrounds the site and allows visitors to have a good look at the remains. In addition, there is an elevated platform and a panel that helps visitors understand all features of the site. The Angel s Bath is without doubt one of the finest maintained constructions out of the remaining eight in the old quarter of Toledo. The renovated room matches the hot room and with a difference to other baths, has maintained the best-structured hypocaust of all Islamic architecture in Toledo. The preserved architectural remains are situated under the buildings of number 13 and 14 of the Colegio-de-los-Infantes square and of numbers 5 and 6 of the Fuentes square. Due to access problems and destruction caused by renovation work on some houses, the location is not well-defined but it would seem that it is made of an entrance room from which start, in a longitudinal way, three rooms corresponding to the cold, warm and hot rooms. The restoration work at the Islamic Baths of the Cenizal, situated under the building at Bajada del Colegio de los Infantes number 14, has been carried out in order to make the space suitable for visits, maintaining the original configuration and most characteristic elements. The Consortium has focused the restorations in the two rooms that form the hammam - the entrance and cold rooms, since the rest of the rooms (hot and warm) are preserved under adjacent buildings. These Baths have been declared Bienes de Interés Cultural (Sites of Cultural Interest), and today they are one of the most relevant examples of what society, higiene and religion were like in the middle ages in Toledo.

Convent of Santa Isabel (Infirmary Patio) 08. Plaster relief from the second half of the XIV century. < The second convent of Franciscan nuns was founded in Toledo in 1477, under the protection of Santa Isabel de Hungría, one of the most relevant personalities of the Order of Saint Francis of Assisi. The new monastery was the work of a lady from Toledo, María Suárez de Toledo, who was a relative of the Catholic Monarchs, daughter of Pedro Suárez and Juana de Guzmán, family of Pinto, who was known as Sister Mary the Poor for her extreme austerity in life. The medieval palace works conserved in the cloister have a Mudejar style, with many carvings in the plaster relief and wooden frameworks. We can highlight those next to the cloister of Los Naranjos, Los Laureles and the Infirmary Patio. The rooms in this palace have a distribution around the patio, with a slightly rectangular-shaped base, defined by octagonal base brick columns. The ground floor conserves three carved plaster structures used to access the two halls in the North, South and West bays. The typology of two of the three carved plaster structures is common to the Mudejar style of Toledo. The type of decoration on both is that of vegetation figures, for the Moorish arch panel and intrados, and its construction date back to the second half of the XIV century.

View of the spectacular vaulted crypt < The convent of the conceptionist Franciscans was founded in the fifteenth century by Beatriz de Silva, and after many vicissitudes, finally settled here in what had been a Franciscan convent, after it had moved to San Juan de los Reyes. With the arrival of the conceptionists, the convent radically transformed. The church was renovated, the large cloister was built and the place adopted a more renaissance feel that added to its previously gothic appearance. The third act carried out by the Consortium of Toledo in this convent was the construction of the ventilated chamber that separates the wall from the ruins found at the square. Crypt and tower of the convent of the Sisters of the Conception The creation of a space under the square, which is accessible from the street without interfering with the convent s private space, allows visitors to explore the subsoil right up to the exterior of the convent. This route passes through an inside gap that leads to an old courtyard on the foot of the Mudejar tower, which has been finished with a plain glass ceiling. From here begins a path that ends at the spectacular arched crypt, which judging by the group of overlaying sarcophagus 09. tombs it seems to have been built for use as a pantheon. This way of burial from the Mudejar era used brick tombs closed with a brick cover.

Roman remains under Alfonso X Commonly known in the city as the chambers of Hacienda, these Roman remains were discovered in 1628 during construction of the present building by the Society of Jesus, as documented by Julio Porres. In 1918 they were rediscovered when the architect for the tax office, Álvaro González Sanz, prepared drawings of the remains floorplan and sectionals, which at the time were used as junk rooms. The restoration took place in two stages, uncovering the complete structure consisting of three parallel arched galleries, the middle one being narrower that the other two. Through their southerner side the galleries open to a new chamber, also arched and larger than the rest. < Remains of one of the Roman chambers It has been confirmed that the central gallery continues into the documented gallery below the hypocaust of the thermal baths at Plaza de Amador de los Ríos. This establishes the presence of a water supply to a thermal complex of large size, chronologically established at around I century AD. Suitability to be visited < 10.

11. In 1364 Inés García de Meneses founded what was to be known as the convent of Santo Domingo el Real. From then onwards, buildings and plots were gradually annexed, a common practice in most convents in Toledo that made them grow with time into small urban structures with complex architectural asymmetries. One of the areas that best illustrates it is precisely this one, which has been called the Cloister of the Mona. At the end of the XVI century a great transformation took place in the hands of Diego de Alcántara, master builder of the Cathedral between 1582 and The double arcade that surrounds the building is built, and its spaces are closed with importat grillwork. In 1587 Toledo ceramist Sebastian de Morales is entrusted with creating the tiles for the supports and floors. In 1935 the Comendadora nuns of Santiago left their former convent of Santa Fe and settled in the area of the cloister of the Mona and its environments. < View of the cloister. During the second half of the XX century the nuns conducted various renovations in the convent, and slowly the loose tiles were removed and stored. The discovery of all this material, considered exceptional both in aesthetic and historical terms, led to the need for restoring it and returning it to its original place in order to ensure its preservation. The possibility of re-assembling the lost pieces to restore the overall image was addressed. The result has led to the recovery of an outstanding architectural ensemble of the late sixteenth century: the cloister of the Mona. While the restoration of the ceramics may stand out as the most attractive feature, it would not be understood without the perhaps more lowprofile, but no less spectacular, restoration of the cloister as a whole. Support made of tiles of exceptional historic value. < Comendadoras Convent (The cloister of the Mona)

The Well of El Salvador 12.

The square of El Salvador is associated to the convent of San Marcos, now a cultural centre and municipal archive. Originally, the building was an extension of the main square, with a cloister built in this space. In 1997, archaeological test run excavations were carried out at the square, which discovered a partially caved-in arched basement. Later on, the archaeological excavation carried out by the Consortium of Toledo during the year 2002 discovered a large arched basement parallel to Trinidad Street, which passes through a door that leads to the square. The Basement has two rooms: Access: Rectangular room, built with masonry. The primitive staircase used to enter the room is preserved on one side. However, there are no remains of the arched roof. Main room: Accessed through a small chamber and a pointed brick arch. The structure of the main room is composed of a barrel arch and a brick semicircular arch. There is a zenithal opening, where we can see a well s kerb stone, logically corresponding to a water deposit. A water collection channel takes us here. Chronology: As regards the historical description, we can only mention that a graph was created with a model of the ruins of the square of El Salvador to compare them with the drawings of Ibáñez Ibero from 1882, showing the lines of the old convent of San Marcos, built in the XVI century. Said drawings do not show the data that confirm that the current ruins are those of the convent. The chronology moves us to the XII and XIII centuries, before the cloister of the convent of the Trinitarios was built around the square. < View Barrel vault of el Pozo de El Salvador. There are various sources of information about this basement of the Square of El Salvador, presenting a speech with the slogan: City of Water Deposits, Wells and Fountains, giving us an insight to the hydraulic resources and basements of Toledo.

Islamic Halls The house with the two halls has one entrance, through the Shed of the Colegio de Doncellas number 2, with access to the main patio. The rectangular and pyramid-shaped halls are on the ground floor. From the constructive point of view, the house has been subject to many modifications, maintaining the Islamic design even though many new features and areas have been added during the Low Middle Ages, Modern Era, Contemporary times and finally, end of the XX century, when the bay that leads to the street was rebuilt. The results of the archaeological study of this space have allowed us to understand the evolution of the constructions and the urban context surrounding them. Three different construction phases are represented in a space of approximately 100 m2. The three phases are articulated around the main room, of Islamic origin, where the old elements are used to widen the space and establish a new house that will reach its splendour at he end of the Low Middle Ages. From this moment on the building is not changed until renovations in the XVIII and XIX centuries. Various archaeological elements found during excavations. < 13. < View of the main room of Islamic origin.

The Tower of San Román is located in the square with the same name, on an elevated plain, in the heart of the historical centre of Toledo. You can enter the tower from the inside of the Church of San Román, where the Museum of Councils and Visigoth Culture is located. In 2002, the Monument Heritage Program of the Consortium consolidated four façades and the tower s roof, cleaning and refurbishing the interior structure, in order to create a place for expositions. A visit to the Tower of San Román will give visitors an insight of the historical, artistic and construction characteristics of Mudejar towers in Toledo. The building was probably built during the XIII or XIV century. A belfry would be later added, adjoining the church, since it was originally separated from the temple as in other examples in the city. The Tower of San Román The ornamentations, structure and plan of San Román are typical of Islamic towers. The building has a square base, also with a central square buttress. If we compare it to other towers of the times, San Román is built on the axis of the temple header and the structure is composed of stair sections covered by barrel archs, a common design in the Spanish Mudejar buildings. The main formal characteristics of the walls are the use of taping masonry, a typical technique of Toledo where masonry slabs framed by brick rows are erected. Horseshoe and multiple lobe arches adorn the openings, as the typical construction features. In addition to the exhibition of original pieces, one of the panels shows the historical, artistic and construction characteristics of the Tower of San Román, to help us understand the politics, society, urban development and art during the medieval times of Toledo. This was a time of great artistic creation and original construction methods, with San Román as one of the best examples. < View of the Tower of San Román from the square of the same name. 14.

The roman ruins at nº19 calle Nuncio Viejo 15.

<View of the spectacular Roman remains. The Consorcio de Toledo has intended to make the Roman ruins a serviceable and suitable site. They are located in the cellars of calle Nuncio Viejo and its surrounding structures. It is a system of walls and chambers that, according to archaeological research, date back to the Roman period. Inside these cellars we can find two of the most important Roman ruins to be discovered in the city; the Roman baths and the water distribution system that is found in the basement of the current Delegación de Hacienda (tax office). The restoration of the site has been carried out with the aim of highlighting its main areas of interest and making it accessible to the public. A path makes visits trouble-free while bringing all the elements of interest closer to the viewer, facilitating the observation and creating an environment that exhibits the spatial qualities of the site the way they were intended. The new elements and materials used in the restoration follow the principles of simplicity and modern architecture, and they are integrated into the project as a whole while maintaining the differentiation and order of hierarchy that favours the Roman remains. During the renovation, a double entry route was created that leads to three arched gaps through a walkway. The entrance is through several steel steps with matching steel banisters. These steps lead to a small wooden platform that provides a panoramic view of the chamber. The platform, in artificial stone over metallic structure, links to a ramp leading into the remaining chambers through a footbridge. Hardened glass doors are found at both entrances. Floored spotlights are to be found as they match the dimly-lit atmosphere that seems appropriate for this type of location. The areas that do not contain archaeological ruins will be covered with a layer of gravelled marble that will have a slightly less abundant aspect than the ruins themselves.
