Trondheim a creative city with a proud history Trondheim is beautifully situated by the Trondheimsfjord. The river Nidelva meanders through the city centre, helping to surround it by water on all sides. The characteristic low and colourful wooden architecture creates an unique atmosphere The city is the historic capital of Norway, and today the capital of the local region Sør-Trøndelag. The history of the city has played an important role in the development of the country from the viking age and medieval times, which many of the popular attractions bear witness to. Trondheim also has strong cultural traditions, hosting a wide range of events and festivals all year round. The original name of Trondheim was Nidaros. The city was established by the mouth of the River Nidelva in the year 997 by the Norwegian king Olav Tryggvason. Nidaros Cathedral, the great pride of the city, was built over the grave of holy St. Olav early in the 11 th century. The cathedral towers over the town, and is Trondheim s most unique and popular attraction. Trondheim is also a city of innovation and technology, with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and several internationally renowned research communities. With inhabitants and approx students it is the 3 rd largest city in Norway vivid and lively, with everything a big city can offer, but still with small-town friendliness. Our newest attraction is the spectacular and innovative ROCKHEIM an interactive museum with six decades of Norwegian rock and pop history gathered together under one roof. Photo Bank Historical, uninhibited, adventurous and creative images from Trøndelag can be downloaded from an online photo bank for use in marketing of Trøndelag. 3 Historical, adventurous and uninhibited Trøndelag A journey in Trøndelag, also known as Mid-Norway, will give you plenty of unforgettable stories to tell when you get back home. You will be close to nature and powerful natural forces where comfort and relaxation will always take centre stage. Trøndelag is wild and charming, a place where authentic traditions and untouched nature exist side by side with the modern world. Trøndelag is like a Norway in miniature. Here we have a coastline with beautiful archipelagoes and its coastal culture, the long Trondheim Fjord and mountains where the snow never melts. On the mountain plateau is the charming mining town of Røros, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since Walking through the streets of Røros with over 100 historical wooden buildings from the 17 th century is like walking within a living museum. There are important historical sites all around Trøndelag. At Stiklestad, the battle field from 1030, and in Trondheim, the legacy of St. Olav is everywhere. Also the history at Autrått Manor can be dated all the way back to the Viking era. Løkken and Røros have hundreds of years of mining history and the fortresses at Austrått and Hegra each tell their own stories of war. During World War II, several sabotage attempts were made on the line. The mine at Løkken was active from 1654 to Here will visitors learn about bygone battles with heat, smoke and ore, experience the quietness within, hear the dripping of water, smell the stench of sulphur and admire a color spectrum that one could hardly believe to be true. This excursion takes us by coach along the shores of the Trondheimsfjord. We later reach Gaulosen, a branch of the main fjord, before following the Orkdalsfjord to the village of Orkanger. Heading up river we arrive in Fannrem, where we will board the train. Arriving at Løkken Station we change transport, boarding a coach for the short drive up to the old mine. The next part of the tour is on foot. The one kilometer route takes us through narrow corridors and large caverns. After the visit in the mine, we continue by coach back to Trondheim. 18 Photo: Ørland kommune Photo: Ørland Coastal Hotel Strategically located by the inlet to the Trondheimfjord, stands the Austrått manor. Its history stretches back to the Viking Age and Snorre s descriptions of the Christianization of Norway. Stories in the Middle Ages tell us about powerful, noble families and close links to noble men. The most known owner, Lady Ingjerd Ottesdatter (ca ) was her era's wealthiest landowner in Norway and a political intriguer. Her politics has inspired Henrik Ibsen and several other Norwegian dramatists. The layout of the manor as it stands today is from about 1656, built in the Renaissance style. However the decorations are Baroque. Departing Trondheim harbor on the express boat bound for Kristiansund, you will cruise out the Trondheim Fjord, Norway s 3rd longest fjord and an important waterway in the Viking era. Sailing past beautiful islands and some of Norway s best agricultural areas, you will after an hour arrive in Brekstad on the Fosen peninsula, where you will disembark. Short walk to the Ørland Coastal Hotel where homemade waffles and coffee/tea will be served in the lobby, while you sit down and talk with your private driver/guide who will take you to Austrått. Before leaving for Trondheim you will again meet at Ørland Coastal Hotel for a taste of the coast lunch. A memorable meal with genuine, high quality seafood. Duration: 7 hours Capacity: High Note: Not suitable for disabled. The Manor is available only to people who can walk stairs. Ørland Coastal Hotel post@kysthotell.no Tel.: The main attraction at Austrått Fortress is the enormous rotating turret. This is the only one left in the world. The turret was first mounted aboard the German battleship Gneisenau and had 3 guns with a diameter of 28.3 cm and a traversing clearance of 360. When the ship sustained damage in the port of Kiel in 1942, the decision was made to place one of Gneisenaus' gun turrets in Austrått Fort. A guided tour will bring you five floors down into the mountain, through the entire gun turret, the electric utility and the soldiers' quarters which could billet up to 200 men. Departing Trondheim harbor on the express boat bound for Kristiansund, you will cruise out the Trondheim Fjord, Norway s 3rd longest fjord and an important waterway in the Viking era. 19 Photo: Karin Størseth Photo: Jørn Adde Ørlandet Ramsar wetland comprises four protected marshland areas. The best known is the Grandefjaera nature reserve, an important area for migrating and molting birds. Grandefjaera is an ornithologist s paradise; as many as 210 species have been registered! Together with the ornithologist, you will observe the various birds from the newly opened bird watching tower. Near the wetlands is Uthaug Farm, a traditional Norwegian farmstead with buildings dating back to There you will be served a traditional, Norwegian lunch consisting of Rømmegrøt, a sour cream porridge traditionally served with cured meats and flat bread (thin, crisp bread) and fresh lemonade. A rhubarb dessert and coffee/tea will complete the meal. After lunch, you will be able to explore the farm area together with your private guide. The main building has an impressive collection of old furniture, textiles and equipment. Departing Trondheim harbor on the express boat bound for Kristiansund. Sailing past some of Norway s best agricultural areas, you will after an hour arrive in Brekstad on the Fosen peninsula, where you will disembark. The tour starts as you drive for about 15 minutes to Grandefjaera where you will meet up with a local ornithologist. Duration: 7 hours Capacity: High Note: Good shoes required, if possible waterproof and wear windproof/waterproof jacket. There are telescopes for loan. We still recommend to bring your own binoculars and don't forget camera. Ørland Coastal Hotel post@kysthotell.no Tel.: Hegra Fortress is a symbol of the power of resistance and bravery. This fortress heroic fight against the German occupation force in April-May 1940 ignited a spark of hope and will-power in the occupied nations. Its underground rooms and passages continue to share the inspiring story of Norwegian tenacity and pride. The fortification, raised high upon the hill above the centre of Hegra, has become a national monument. The old fortress was built to defend us against an enemy coming from the east - the arch-enemy throughout the centuries - Sweden. However, the true story began in April The 200 defenders, among them one woman, stood their ground against waves of land- and air-attacks from the Germans in 25 day. Major Hans Reidar Holtermann led the brave resistance force. On the morning of May 5th he made the decision to show the white flag. To go on fighting was impossible. The lack of food and provisions was precarious. In all Southern Norway resistance had come to an end, and the fortress was an isolated island in a sea of occupants. The story of Hegra Fortress is kept alive. The Hegra Fortress is a 45 minutes coach ride North of Trondheim. Coffee and snacks can be bought at the fortress. A photo stop at Hell Railway Station can be arranged. Duration: 3 hours Capacity: High Season: May - September Note: Some walking involved. Wear suitable shoes and clothes.
