4 Gabii sa Kabilin is held every last Friday of May to celebrate Cebu s history and culture. Using one ticket, people visit museums and heritage sites from 6 pm to 12 mn. Fun and wholesome, Cebu has been enjoying the Gabii sa Kabilin experience for eleven years This year s Gabii sa Kabilin celebrates the pre-colonial roots of Filipino culture with the theme, Balangay. Our highlight exhibits and presentations bring out elements of Bisaya society and culture before contact with Europeans. 4

8 Cebu City Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu Address: Mabini Street corner Urdaneta Street, Señor Santo Niño, Cebu City Tel. no.: The Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu is an architectural gem, being a fine example of the architectural structure called bahay-na-bato. It has stood the test of time, surviving World War II, after which it has gone through many transformations (as a convent for priests and a campus of the University of San Carlos) before it became the museum that we know today. It boasts of numerous photographs and illustrations depicting the growth of the Catholic faith in the island as well as several memorabilia of Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, the Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu, who, when first assigned in Cebu, was a resident of this former convento as the parish priest of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. The Chinese Catholic Association founded the parish in 1920 and now it is Cebu s first modern church. 10 Basilica del Santo Niño Museum Address: Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City Tel. no.: local 602 In 1965, the Basilica del Santo Niño Museum first opened to the public in light of the 4th centennial celebration, commemorating the Philippines Christianization many years ago. Established by Fr. Ambrosio Boy Galindez, O.S.A, the museum stored, preserved, and exhibited religious artifacts of the local Augustinian community, one of which are treasures depicting the Santo Niño. Also, included in the museum s treasure trove are various ex-votos like jewelry and toys given to the Santo Niño by grateful devotees in thanksgiving for answered prayers. 10

11 Casa Gorordo Museum Address: 35 Lopez Jaena Street Tinago, Cebu City Tel. no.: The Casa Gorordo Museum was built by Alejandro Reynes y Rosales and housed four generations of the Gorordo family, including Juan Gorordo, the first Filipino bishop of Cebu. The house-turned-museum gives a glimpse into the life of the Filipino family between the 1860s and 1920s, providing us with insights and the feel of a bygone era. 12 Cebu City Museum Address: Osmeña Boulevard, Capitol Site, Cebu City Tel. no.: / Housed in the same building as the Rizal Memorial Library, the Cebu City Museum houses an assortment of antiques, sculptures, furniture, and woodcarvings donated by prominent Cebuano families. Scattered around the museum are portraits of well-known Cebuano figures and paintings and sculptures that depict Cebu s lifestyle during the 1500s to the Japanese occupations in the 1940s. 12

13 Cebu Provincial Capitol Address: Capitol Site, Cebu City, Tel. no.: The Cebu Provincial Capitol Building is the seat of governance of Cebu. Constructed during the term of Sotero B. Cabahug in 1937 and inaugurated in 1938, its neo-classical style of architecture echoes the standard public buildings in the Pre-World War II era. 13

The former president lived there until his death on October 19, It now hosts of a large collection of memorabilia of the former President, from pictures and articles, clothes and personal effects, furniture and even his cadillac, as well as art collections from the College Assurance Plan. 15 Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple Address: V. Rama Avenue, Calamba, Cebu City Tel. no.: The temple was established in 1988 by a couple named Paterno and Rosita Luym. The temple advocates the Three Acts of Goodness do good deeds, say good words, think good thoughts and regularly practices community extension services such as giving gift packs on Christmas and conducting medical and dental missions. The temple architecture is an example of a brilliant Chinese architecture. Inside the temple lies the statue of Amithaba Buddha, who is said to be the one who carries the prayers for the dead. 16 Fort San Pedro Address: Pigafetta Street, Cebu City Tel. no.: Fort San Pedro was a military defense structure built on May 8, 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Antonio Pigafetta, to keep the Muslim raiders at bay. It is known as the oldest tri-bastion fort in the Philippines. Now it has been turned into a museum where showcased are Spanish documents, artifacts, sculptures, paintings, swords and other weaponry. 18 Iglesia Filipina Independiente Cathedral of the Sto. Niño Address: 49 A. Mabini Street, Tinago, Cebu City Tel. no.: Many prominent figures have visited the cathedral from its construction in 1903 until now. Figures such as Fr. Gregorio Aglipay, the faith s first head; General Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines; and Rt. Rev. Fernando Buyser, a virtuoso poet of the Sugboanon language. The cathedral was able to save important documents dating back to the 1920s, even after a fire broke out. It has been able to preserve well its life-size religious images of the Mater Dolorosa and the crucified Christ, dating over 100 years old. 18

Gullas Street, Cebu City Tel. no.: Founded by Jose Dodong Gullas in 2010, this music-oriented museum displays the talents and skills of Cebuano musicians and artists. With exhibits of local composers and artists, paintings, musical instruments, awards, certificates and original musical sheets, the museum shows Cebuano heritage and lifestyle through music. 19

20 Museo Parian 1730 Jesuit House Address: Zulueta Street, Tinago, Cebu City Tel. no.: Museo Parian is an 18th-century architectural marvel of a coral stone house that fuses Filipino, Chinese, Spanish and American cultural designs and architectural techniques. It became an operation base of the Jesuit missionaries in converting to Christianity the natives of the Visayas and other parts of the Philippines. Now it is a time capsule of 18th-century Cebu and houses relics of the past, showcasing various furniture and memorabilia of the time. Cuenco Avenue, Tejero, Cebu City Tel. no.: Museo Sugbo was used as Cebu s provincial jail from 1870 to 2004, and was converted into a museum in August 13, It hosts Spanish-era and American-era galleries, and on the second floor, a World War II gallery. 22 Museum of Bicycling Address: Elicon House, corner P. del Rosario and Junquera Streets, Cebu City Tel. No.: Elicon House has developed a practice of reducing the use of carbon-emitting vehicles. The museum promotes alternative modes of transportation, particularly the use of bicycles as cost-efficient substitutes for cars. The museum highlights the different benefits of bicycling through a collection of carefully-chosen bicycles, pictures, artworks and information that show the importance, practicality and versatility of bicycling. 23 Museum of Heritage and Folk Art Address: Mayflower Inn, A. Villalon Drive, Capitol Site, Cebu City Tel no.: Housed in the Mayflower Inn, which is a heritage and permaculture inspired hotel established in 1953, the walls and shelves teem of art, crafts and historical artifacts. A mini forest is also found inside a haven for resident turtles, koi, and regular visiting bird. The museum boasts of collections from various national and international cultures, such as sacred art, folk art, musical instruments, coins and banknotes, technology, household items, and toys. No.: MoNA displays the art exhibits of Paulina Constancia, a versatile Filipino-Canadian artist best known for her bright-colored, capricious narratives painted on quilts and tiles, assemblages, and mixed media artworks. Constancia s artworks remind us of our connection to nature and each person through her use of child-like perspective, bright colors, and idealized scenes of everyday life. 25 Plaza Parian/ AboitizLand Address: Parian, Cebu City Plaza Parian used to be surrounded by several stone, tile and wood residences of the principalia, before it was reduced to shambles in the 1870s. It was in this area that the Junta Popular of the Republic under Luis Flores was established on January 10, During the American occupation, it was converted into a telegraph office. The triangular-shaped plaza was the venue of a theatrical performance of full-sized puppets portraying the life of St. John the Baptist up to the time of his execution. The decapitation scene with its fake blood and gore drew applause from its huge audience every year until the 1970s. At present, the plaza is enclosed in a fence as it is the site of the Heritage of Cebu Monument. The enormous tableau sculpture features the significant and symbolic events in Cebu s history, from the period of Rajah Humabon to the beatification of Cebuano martyr Pedro Calungsod. Conceptualized in 1996 by then Mayor Alvin Garcia and national artist Edgardo Castrillo, the commissioned work started in earnest the following year. 26 Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church Address: Tupas Street, San Nicolas, Cebu City Tel. No.: The church traces back it roots to the Spanish period in the time of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi s landing. Established way back on May 16, 1584, it had clay tile roof which was typical of Spanish-era structures. 27 San Pedro Calungsod Shrine Address: Archbishop s Residence compound, Cebu City Tel. no.: The Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod was built in , in response to the need for a sacred place to propagate the devotion of the first Visayan saint. Located within the Archbishop s Residence compound, the shrine s interior design details are filled with symbols, and houses memorabilia, of San Pedro Calungsod. No.: local 140 The museum is housed in one of the best all-women colleges that has existed in Cebu ever since the 1940s. It was Sr. Ma. Delia Coronel, ICM who set up the foundation of its Folklife Museum onwards The living museum takes you back to Cebuano life before, during and after the Spanish era. It boasts of artifacts from Asian countries that have had trade relations with the Philippines. It has also retained a copy of the great Maranao Narangen Epic of Mindanao, along with other items belonging to the Mindanao Lumad collection. Ethnic music presentation Filipino games and crafts 28

29 Sugbo Chinese Heritage Museum Address: Gotiaoco Building, M.C., Briones Street, Cebu City Managed by the Sugbo Chinese Heritage Museum Foundation Inc. (SCHMFI), the three-story museum is aimed at ensuring that the Sugboanon-Chinese legacy lives on. It is housed in the century-old Gotiaoco Building, which is in itself a historical marker of first Chinese settlement in Cebu. It is structured to consist two major halls and a grand hall for exhibitions and displays of artefacts, documents and other memorabilias contributed by 15 Sugboanon-Chinese families. 29

30 United Church of Christ of the Philippines - Bradford Memorial Chapel Address: Osmena Boulevard, Sta. Cruz, Cebu City Tel. No.: The UCCP-Bradford Memorial Chapel is currently the only Protestant Church in Cebu which was selected as a national historical landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Built in 1913, the oldest Presbyterian church in the province stands on the three-hectare land bought by the Board of Foreign Missions. It symbolizes the growth of Protestantism in Cebu and the influence of the American Presbyterian Missionaries. The cross-shaped church structure was named after Matilda L. 31 University of San Carlos Museum Address: University of San Carlos Main Campus, P. del Rosario Street, Cebu City Tel. no.: The University of San Carlos Museum was formally inaugurated by Fr. Pres. Rudolf Rahmann, SVD on 23 April However, the museum began as a repository of the fieldwork conducted by the anthropology and biology departments of the university in the 1950s. Prior to this, a museum with cabinets of curiosity was inaugurated in 1908 at the old Seminario-Colegio de San Carlos located at the original campus beside Plaza Independencia. That museum was unfortunately destroyed, together with its precious collection, during the American liberation bombings in Located at the university s downtown campus, it occupies both the north and south wings of the ground floor of the Arthur Dingman Building, named after the first rector of USC. Niño, Cebu City With the largest collection of Jose Rizal memorabilia outside of Luzon, the USPF- Rizaliana Museum houses a myriad of prized artifacts of the national hero which include letters to his colleagues and friends, as well as all 14 postcards with the text of his final obra, Mi Ultimo Adios. How the collection arrived in Cebu is a vignette of social history, and now it rests in the museum, which was awarded by the Rizal Centennial Commission as a Rizal National Shrine in During the Gabii sa Kabilin 2018 the USPF - Rizal Museum will be relaunched. It will now have an enhanced experience featuring exhibits on Rizal s life as a student in Europe when he wrote his most famous novel the Noli Mi Tangere. No.: (c/o Talisay City Tourism Office) In the old poblacion of Talisay, special presentations will be seen at the Talisay City College, Museo de Talisay, Old Municipal Hall and Cuatro Aliños. 34 Collegium Societatis Angeli Pacis Museum Address: Cansojong, Talisay City The CSAP Museum was opened as a museum in 2013 and housed a member s collection of religious images, from crèche from around the world, to various Marian and Santo Niño images, larger-than-life tableaus of the Seven Sorrows and Joys of Saint Joseph, and a collection from the Dadro Society. Within the compound and across the museum is the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, wherein the relic of the hand of the original Black Nazarene of Quiapo is housed. Also kept in the shrine is the image of the Santo Niño blessed by St. Pope John Paul II and used in the fluvial parade during the Sinulog for more than a decade. 34

35 Mandaue City Mandaue Presidencia Address: P.J. Burgos Street, Mandaue City Tel. no.: (c/o Mandaue City Tourism Office) Mandaue Presidencia was inaugrated on September 12, 1937 during the term of Cebu Governor Sotero B. Cabahug. Its building follows the Neo-Greco style and was initially utilized as office by Mandaue s El Presidente or mayor since the Commonwealth Era. However, it wasn t until World War II that the Japanese Imperial forces transformed the seat of government for the city into a garrison. The new city hall was founded on March 19, The left and right side of the main bulding both contained a second and third wing. To connect the two added wings, an additional floor was constructed. The visual aspect of the municipal hall constitutes an E-formed floor plan that was previously L-shaped. Cultural Show 35

No.: (c/o Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Office) The Mactan Shrine is the famous site where the battle between the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and Mactan Island chieftain Lapu-Lapu happened in A 20-meter bronze memorial statue on top of a pedestal is made in honor of Rajah Lapu-Lapu s victory over the former. It is situated in a park where the Magellan Shrine and a covered structure securing a remarkable mural painting depicts the Battle of Mactan.
