It is assumed that the army of despot Stefan Nemanjić dwelt there. As it rose to become the capital in XV century, battles around and for fortress Žabljak increased. At the time it was a settlement with 300 households, at the mouth of Morača River and Lake Skadar, with developed commerce, a vital economic and trade centre. Ruler Ivan Crnojević who ruled form fought with the Turks until 1479, when the fortress fell to Turkish reign. And so it remained for four centuries. The palace of Crnojević family was turned into the barracks and the churches of Saint Đorđe into a mosque, and later on into a school. Only one, heavy iron door leads to the town. Today the fortress is composed from walls high up to 15 meters and 2 meters wide with six towers. Over the centuries it was modified. Turkish modifications evident from reckless construction, and older parts of the wall and semicircle tower are built of cut rubble in limestone plaster. Newer parts have characteristics of Venetian construction. Žabljak is presently deserted, but its settlement still lives. Roots of Montenegro are formed in this place...while the view from the fortress is a special impression...and you have to try the best fish soup in Montenegro, traditionally prepared by host Karlo who is keeping the recipe as a top secret for years... This is a great place for swimming, snorkeling and underwater photography, this geological attraction can only be accessed by boat or by kayak. Also, a second nearby cave can only be accessed by kayak as the opening is just 1 meter in height. A picturesque 35 minute mini bus tour along the winding roads of Lustica Peninsula and on to Uvala Veslo, a dramatic coastal feature great for swimming, snorkeling and launching our kayaks. Heading out we hug the coast before paddling into the Adriatic towards The Blue Cave, the largest in a series of natural excavations that can be easily entered by kayak. A unique feature of the Blue Cave is that the time of day greatly effects the undulating water s colour; from light blue in the morning to dark blue at mid day, and back again to light blue before sunset. Kayaking to and snorkeling at the Blue Cave is the best way to explore the rocky coastline and the Adriatic s crystal clear waters. The boat throws some 50 cm of wake and up to 3 passengers and a rider can be present onboard during the session.
