20 MUSIC IN AUSTRIA In one area of culture, Austria has no equal: Classical music. Great Austrian composers from Joseph Haydn and Amadeus Mozart in the 18th century, the Strauss family and Gustav Mahler in the 19th, to Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg in the 20th, Austrian composers have expanded classical music in all directions: from the light dance music of the Strauss to the brooding intensity of Mahler and the modern atonal work of Schoenberg. Every night in Vienna about 10,000 music fans are treated to classical music and Vienna s musical life is dominated by three great monumental performance venues: The Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Vienna State Opera. But also Salzburg, the Mozart City, is a hot spot for classical music lovers. The whole city is a stage and this is not just true during the famous Salzburg Festival. 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Austria Austria offers its visitors many beautiful historical sights to visit. Nine of those are nowadays listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites because of their outstanding universal value and each one of them is worth a visit! Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg Salzburg, with its dramatic townscape and historically significant urban fabric, together with its proliferation of prominent ecclesiastical and secular buildings from across the ages, is a salient example of an European ecclesiastical city-state. As a meeting point of cultures and arts from northern and southern Europe, Salzburg is primarily associated with music and the well-known Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wachau Cultural Landscape Wachau is an outstanding example of a river landscape bordered by mountains in which material evidence of its long historical evolution has survived to a remarkable degree. The architecture, the human settlements, and the agricultural use of the land in Wachau vividly illustrate a fundamentally medieval landscape which has evolved organically and harmoniously over time. Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn The castle is a symbol of the power and influence of the House of Habsburg in European history. Together with the park, the ensemble is an excellent example of the princely baroque residences, and a great work of art. Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape This alpine region is an outstanding example of a natural landscape of great beauty and scientific interest. The history of Hallstatt and this region can be traced back to the salt-economy and through its connection with culture and nature. Semmering Railway The Semmering Railway represents a notable technological solution to a major physical problem in the construction of early railways, thereby creating a new form of cultural landscape. The Semmering Railway was built between 1848 and 1854 with a length of 41 kilometers. City of Graz Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg The historic center of the city of Graz reflects artistic and architectural movements originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroad for centuries. The urban complex, along with Schloss Eggenberg, built shortly after 1625, is an exceptional example of a harmonious integration of architectural styles from successive periods. The urban physiognomy faithfully tells the story of its historic development. Historic Centre of Vienna Three key periods of European cultural and political development the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit, the era of industrialization are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe. Fertö-Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape, jointly with Hungary Fertö/Neusiedler See has been the meeting place of different cultures for eight thousand years. Its varied landscape bears witness to this intercultural development process. The outstanding rural architecture around the lake and many palaces from the 18th and 19th century are a part of the significant prominence. Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps This serial property of 111 small individual sites (five of them located in Upper Austria at Attersee and Mondsee and in Carinthia at Keutschacher See) encompasses the remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements in and around the Alps. They were built from around 5000 to 500 B.C. on the edges of lakes, rivers or wetlands. Nowadays the remains of these buildings and the findings from the surrounding areas provide insight into life during prehistoric times in the Neolithic and Bronze Age in Alpine Europe. 25

43 simply inspiring Destination Munich Interview with Rupert Geiger, Manager Trade Relations München Tourismus Munich is one of the favorite destinations of american travellers. What are the reasons for this? I can see 4 main reasons, why the american traveller loves Munich: the city is rich in sights and history, it has incredibly beautiful surroundings with places like Neuschwanstein or Rothenburg, it offers Europe's best airport and with it's beer and food culture is an ideal place to have a good time. For people who have already been to Munich, is there anything new? In a city like Munich there are constantly new sights, new bars and restaurants, new hotels. In 2016 we will celebrate 100 years of BMW and 500 years of the bavarian beer purity law both celebrations will be major events for Munich! But for me personally the most important news last year was the opening of the Nazi Documentation Centre. It shows the whole history of the Nazi Party, how it started and grew, but also how it ended. And it does that in a historical location, just next to the Führerbau, where Hitler had his office. For which type of client would you recommend a visit to Munich? For those who love to enjoy! Munich is a very sensual city, full of taste, full of color, full of music. And for people who have the palate to take advantage of that, Munich is the best place Do you have any secret spot in Munich, which you would share with the Pegasus clients? Go to the Hofgarten park, and head for the Diana Temple in it s centre. During late afternoon and evening hours you can always expect someone performing live music there. Acoustics here are amazing, and the baroque architecture of the temple and the park make it a sometimes surreal experience just out of this world! And you are merely 5 minutes from the hustle of downtown Contact: tourismus.sales@muenchen.de 43

57 VIENNA DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & ART From the finest Baroque Palaces, Neo-Classicism and Art Nouveau. 7 Days to explore Vienna s architecture! 6 Nights / 7 Days Tour DAY 1: Arrival In Vienna: The Imperial Ringstrasse & Baroque Palaces Meet with our English speaking guide and transfer from the Airport to a panoramic city tour to get a first vision of Vienna. Vienna was rebuilt in the late 19th century as a fitting capital for the last flowering of the great Habsburg empire. The old city walls were replaced by a ring the Ringstrasse of buildings in suitable imperial style. The 1869 State Opera House was the first major building on the Ringstrasse, the neoclassical symmetry continuing with the Museum of Fine Arts and Natural History. The Parliament built in Greek Revival style by Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen, is strikingly opposed by Friedrich von Schmidt s grand gothic City Hall, the one reaching back to the classical, the other to the folk tradition and both built in The Hofburg, the great sprawling imperial palace originates from 1273, but was continually expanded on the most grandiose scale. Collectively, the Hofburg and the buildings of the Ringstrasse express in a compact and ordered way the authority and power of empire in a way no other city can match. In the afternoon, step back over a century to the great baroque period. Prince Eugene of Savoy s 1723 Belvedere Palace once lay outside the city. The formal french gardens separate the Lower Belvedere, used for living, and the Upper Belvedere, used for more formal occasions. Visit its fine art collection, including the famous Kiss by Gustav Klimt. The Belvedere s baroque splendour is the work of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, who began his professional life building fortresses for Prince Eugene in his wars against the Turks, but ended up Court Architect and continued the Habsburg style developed by his famous predecessor, Johann Bernhard Fisher von Erlach, perhaps the most influential architect of the baroque era. In what was once the imperial hunting grounds, no more expressive example of that style can be found than Maria Teresa s summer palace of Schönbrunn; von Erlach s design a masterpiece of harmony and imperial grace. Three course dinner in the hotel. DAY 2: Art Nouveau There is a seamless harmony to the works of Otto Wagner, blending the ornamentation of the earlier baroque and neoclassical and even the new gothic into the flowing lines of Art Nouveau. Throughout the city, his humble tram stations became shrines to design, and his Kirche am Steinhof is considered one of the most important Art Nouveau churches in the world. Later, his massive concrete Austrian Postal Savings Bank building pointed the way to more modern, cleaner, lines. Inside, the glass-roofed hall is a wonder of light and a fitting monument to this fine architect. Keen in making more individual statements, work by Wagner s fellow members of the Vienna Secession movement can be seen at the Secession building; e.g. Gustav Klimt s famous Beethoven Frieze. Alfred Loos was an early exponent of clean lines and in 1903 built Michaelaplatz 3. This still strikingly modern building was dubbed the House without Eyebrows. After the imperial excess of the previous centuries, nothing expressed the new socialist Vienna of the 1920s so dramatically than Wagner s pupil, Karl Ern s Gemeindebau (municipal tenement building) Karl Marx-Hof. At meters long, Karl Marx-Hof s is the longest residential building in the world. Finally, to round off a time of great turmoil and war on a lighter note, we bring you to the Prater, Vienna s most prized recreation area. A collection of booths, amusements and restaurants and the Giant Ferris Wheel. Constructed in 1897 and, for 65 years, the tallest in the world, it was made internationally famous in the 1947 film The Third Man. DAY 3: Design & Hundertwasser Visit the Lobmeyr Glass Museum. For more than 150 years their flagship store has been located in Vienna s famous Kärntnerstrasse. There, table-setting and lighting is presented in a harmonious way, surrounded with original ambience of the high Victorian style. The second floor houses the Viennese Glass Museum: Here you will find sets of drinking glasses dating from 1823, when the company was founded, and also part of the Court porcelain and silverware collections. At the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) meet with a representative of the Museum MAK Permanent Collection. Under its director, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, the MAK displays its extensive collection of carpets, furniture and more esoteric objects in an active and involving way. In the afternoon, it is time to be introduced to the extraordinary painter, designer, architect and adventurer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Given the opportunity by the Viennese authorities to put into practice his concept of natural living, the Hundertwasser House is made of bricks, reinforced concrete, ceramics and wood, with much greenery as well as distinctive gold-plated bulbous spires. One of the most prominent buildings of the city is the waste incineration plant on Spittelauer Lände which was also decorated by Hundertwasser. Visit the nearby KunstHausWien (Vienna Culture House) built to Hundertwasser s principles and holding a permanent exhibition to his philosophy. 57

58 DAY 4: Wachau Wine & Design in the Countryside The Wachau is Austria premier wine growing area and, situated in the beautiful Danube valley, an UNESCO World Heritage site. In the town of Langenlois, the American architect Steven Holl has created a dramatic and thought-provoking cubist building that focuses the mind on the vine and the wine s relationship to the earth. Below the aluminium skinned cube, the LOISIUM cellar is a labyrinth dating back 900 years. You are invited to participate in an exceptional tour including many stories and tales surrounding the world of wine. Lunch in Krems, the gateway to the Wachau Valley with its historical center of irresistible medieval charm. For a more modern take on the city, visitors are invited to stroll along the Kunstmeile ( Art mile ), featuring the Kunsthalle ( Art hall ) and the Caricature Museum. The Kunsthalle is Lower Austria s top venue for exhibitions on art from the 20th 21st century and the caricature museum is the only one of its kind in the country, featuring an entertaining permanent exhibition of the work of the likes of Gustav Peichl (IRONIMUS) and Manfred Deix. Return to Vienna in the afternoon. DAY 5: The Modern City During the 1960s, visionary designs by architects and artists, called the Austrian Phenomenon, attracted international attention with architects such as Walter Pichler, Hans Hollein, and the teams HausRuckerCo and Coop Himmelb(l)au. Hans Hollein s glass and steel Haas House directly opposite St Stephen s Cathedral is still the cause of controversy. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in the 1990s and the opening to the east, growth and urban development spawned Sargfabrik, the biggest self-initiated and self-governed housing and culture project in Austria. The bright orange building was opened in 1996, on the site where once the largest coffin manufacturer in Habsburg lands once stood. Not only the name ( Sarg means coffin) and the chimney are reminiscent of this former usage, but also the floor plan of the new building, designed by the architects BKK-3. The large Gasometers, formerly providing fuel and heating for the city, are today apartments designed by architects Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and Wilhelm Holzbauer. New skyscraper buildings appeared, and the 202- meter-high Millennium Tower on the banks of the Danube is an integral part of the city silhouette, as is Wienerberg City and the Twin Towers at Vienna's south exit. The DC Tower 1 by French architect Dominique Perrault became the tallest building in Austria at the end of 2013, at 220 meters. The largest urban development project is the Danube City, a booming location with skyscrapers and attractive apartments on the south bank of the Danube, changing forever the skyline of Vienna. DAY 6: Vienna and Fantastic Realism Morning at leisure. Afternoon visit the Ernst Fuchs Museum with Champagne Reception. Fuchs ( ) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, architect, stage designer, composer, poet, singer and one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He bought Otto Wagner s summer house Villa (later called Ben Tiber Villa and today Fuchs Villa). A dramatic located and designed building, the villa stood decaying with dignity in the garden until Ernst Fuchs initiative to save the building. Much of the villa was restored in the style of Otto Wagner, the rest after designs by Ernst Fuchs. In 100 years, the cycle of architecture had come full circle. The villa served as Fuchs atelier for a long time and the artist s work enlivens and decorate the whole house, from the large-scale pictures, figures and objects created specially for it, to the furniture; from decorative fabrics to the bronze figure of Queen Esther on the terrace. A prolific artist, all epochs of Fuchs creation are represented here. Farewell dinner at the restaurant Vestibül. The Vestibül near the Burg theater is a café/restaurant with a magnificent, historical ambience. The new glass front invites guests to a traditional bar and café. In this lavishly decorated restaurant chef Leopold Doppler serves exquisite specialities. The menu is a beautiful mixture of classic and modern, innovative elements.
