2 VSS01 TRSIC, Loznica Environmental Dates: 30/05 14/06 Trsic is a small village famous as the birth place of Vuk Karadzic, the reformist of Serbian language and orthography. Today it is a place very much visited by tourists. The workcamp is a joint initiative of several local partner organizations working together on introducing the spirit of voluntarism and developing and improving rural and eco tourism in Trsic. The goal is to educate local people and motivate them to be active citizens in preserving the nature and other values for the sake of generations to come. This is the forth year the camp is organized here, as the first three gave great results. Work: Volunteers will work on cleaning the woods from garbage; clearing the vegetation; marking the walking paths which are connecting Vuk s house and 5km distant XIV century Tronosa monastery and making wooden benches and tables that would be placed along the path. This year especially the volunteers will prepare tracks for mountain bike races, organised for the first time by this initiative in the village. For its ultimate historical importance for the Serbian language this village has, students of Serbian and other Slavic languages are very welcome, but others interested in the culture or, simply, in environmental protection, are also welcome. Accommodation: In a house only 50m away from Vuk s house, built in the same style, in the heart of the ethno village. Volunteers will prepare meals together with the host. Location: Trsic is situated close to Loznica in the western part of Serbia. Special remarks: Excursions to important cultural and historical points will be organized, together with visits to museums and one day for getting to know the children from the local school and participating in their special event. Location: Jastrebac Mountain is close to Krusevac, 190km South East of Belgrade Special remarks: we don t expect hard work and the hardest thing to do during the camp will be riding a bike what should not be a problem for at least recreational riders. Special requirements: It would be very good if the volunteers have some history in MTB and to bring their bike along because most of the time will be spent on bikes so it is better for them to have a bike they are used to. They could also rent a bike on Jastrebac or in Krusevac. Price for renting a bike is 50 for the duration of whole camp. Renting a bike also includes spare tubes and mechanical services. A group of young people initiated workcamps to increase and affirm the cultural and touristic potentials through interaction between the locals and the volunteers in an international atmosphere. Work: The workshop will consist of two groups organized around the idea of street galleries. First group s task will be painting murals and introducing innovations to the technical procedure of the wall painting itself. The basic medium shall be acrylic façade painting. However, interventions and experiments with the third dimension are also sought after. The primary goal of the second group work is introducing new forms of expression, graffiti art and spreading popular culture through interaction with young people. An art that s been marginalized throughout decades and classified as subculture gets its own legitimate place and recognition through a phenomenon of a street gallery. Synthesis and collaboration between these two groups is possible depending on ideas and agreement among the members. According to their own affinities, the participants will decide between two groups in order to express their creativity to the full extent. It is a Nature park, protected for its extraordinary natural values. Unfortunately, this area is neglected and most of the natural and touristic potentials are unrecognized and unused. Many young people from villages in Serbia, especially in the eastern part, considered to be the poorest one, leave for bigger towns. The social life in these villages is seriously threathened. A group of international voluteers can bring a refreshment and interest of young people back in staying and investing in their villages. In all Serbian villages people used to build big public halls for various social events (sport events, cultural happenings, art and museum exhibitions, celebrations, etc.) all villagers would participate in. Nis had been early populated and thereafter had been longed and occupied by numerous powers, leaving archaeological sites around the town. Work: This is the first year of the camp together with our local partner organization. VSS15 ZASAVICA, Sremska Mitrovica Environmental Dates: 07/08 17/08 The Special Nature Reserve Zasavica is located west of Belgrade, along the Sava River, and covers 671 ha. This is one of the reserves with a very strong management system and in the last eight years it organized very successful international voluntary workcamps. Surrounded by the fragments of marshes, hygrophilous forests and meadows, the river ecosystem dominates the area. It is characterized by the presence of rare and endemic species of animals, being endangered not only in Serbia but also in Europe, such as the fish Umbra krameri and others. However, scientists discovered that a number of invasive alien species spread on account of native species. Obedska Bara, famous ornithological site, is an oxbow lake surrounded with marsh and forest habitats. It is a small, picturesque town with rich past and represents the centre of the Serbian culture and spirituality. During late September it is hosting a traditional wine festival that gathers

For many years constant migration from the villages to towns leaves indelible effects on the remaining population in the villages. In recent years there has been developed a strong movement for rural sustainable development through sustainable tourism in ethno villages representing the traditional Serbian life style. This small but entire community is doing their best in preserving the valley and keeping the mountain clean and accessible for nature lovers. The most important treasure of this village is its unforgettable view over Guca, where the world wide popular trumpet festival occurs in the summer and the mountain peak just few km away. Village has a primary school which is closed since year 2000 due to bad situation regarding constant decrease of number of children in the village. Now children are travelling into neighbour town everyday. The idea of the local community is to renovate abandoned building of the old school and change its purpose into something more useful for young people left in the village.
