Speaking of planning ahead, the reservation form for Spring Fling 2019 the first week of May is already available and is attached. There is a link on the Spring Fling reservation form for tickets. Ride Safe and we will see you on the road, David & Karen ****************************************************************************** News from the Region N Couple of the Year David & Karen Hill Since the last newsletter we have been busy. The Georgia District Rally was August 2-4 at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa, Georgia. Just getting there on Wednesday, April 1 was quite the adventure. It rained from the time we left home until we arrived in Toccoa. It didn t stop then either. The rain was almost continuous through Thursday and part of Friday. The only clear day was Saturday. If you ever visit Toccoa, we would recommend that you go see the 186 foot drop Toccoa Falls which is on the Toccoa Falls College campus. These falls have quite a history too. There was a lake above the falls which provided water to power a small hydroelectric plant located a short distance from the falls. A little after midnight on November 6, 1977, the dam burst. As a result of the flooding, 39 people lost their lives. The program Friday night was entertainment by an Elvis impersonator. As at any district rally, there is a chapter challenge. The challenge at this rally was not like any we have seen. There
was a canoe race (the conference center is on Lake Louise) around 2 buoys. The contestants had to go around the course twice. We don t think some of them have been in a canoe before but at least they tried. Another task the contestants had to do was to pilot a remote controlled race boat around the same course. This boat was about 3-feet long and powered by a gas engine. That thing was fast! It was hilarious watching the folks try to use the remote to control the boat. These two canoes bumped into each other. The first buoy is to the right of the far canoe. The canoe on the left had trouble steering the canoe in the right direction
On Thursday, August 16, we are headed up to Cave City, Kentucky, for the Kentucky District rally. It was a good rally last year at the same location and we assume it will be a good rally this year also. Then a week after the Kentucky rally, we are headed to Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville. As the final Region N Couple of the Year, we are participating in the final International Couple of the Year selection process. There will be six International COYs next year but they will not be selected at Wing Ding 41. They will be selected before Wing Ding but will be introduced at Wing Ding. ****************************************************************************** Coming Events August Kentucky District Rally Cave City, KY. Flyer and registration at August 28-September 1 Wing Ding 40, Knoxville, TN. This will be a BIG rally for Karen and David since we will be participating in the selection process for International Couple of the Year. I don t know that we have a good shot at it since there are several very qualified couples, but we will give it our best effort. September North Carolina District Rally Haywood County Fairgrounds, 758 Crabtree Rd, Waynesville, NC Flyer and registration form at October Mississippi District Rally Gulfport, MS. ( ) Check out the District Newsletter and the website for coming events and a lot of other information.
****************************************************************************** Did You Know This? Phrases from History.com, published in 2013 Turn a Blind Eye -- The phrase turn a blind eye often used to refer to a willful refusal to acknowledge a particular reality dates back to a legendary chapter in the career of the British naval hero Horatio Nelson. During 1801 s Battle of Copenhagen, Nelson s ships were pitted against a large Danish-Norwegian fleet. When his more conservative superior officer flagged for him to withdraw, the one-eyed Nelson supposedly brought his telescope to his bad eye and blithely proclaimed, I really do not see the signal. He went on to score a decisive victory. Some historians have since dismissed Nelson s famous quip as merely a battlefield myth, but the phrase turn a blind eye persists to this day. Diehard -- While it typically refers to someone with a strong dedication to a particular set of beliefs, the term diehard originally had a series of much more literal meanings. In its earliest incarnation in the 1700s, the expression described condemned men who struggled the longest when they were executed by hanging. The phrase later became even more popular after 1811 s Battle of Albuera during the Napoleonic Wars. In the midst of the fight, a wounded British officer named William Inglis supposedly urged his unit forward by bellowing Stand your ground and die hard make the enemy pay dear for each of us! Inglis 57th Regiment suffered 75 percent casualties during the battle, and went on to earn the nickname the Die Hards. Read the riot act -- These days, angry parents might threaten to read the riot act to their unruly children. But in 18th-century England, the Riot Act was a very real document, and it was often recited aloud to angry mobs. Instituted in 1715, the Riot Act gave the British government the authority to label any group of more than 12 people a threat to the peace. In these circumstances, a public official would read a small portion of the Riot Act and order the people to disperse themselves, and peaceably depart to their habitations. Anyone that remained after one hour was subject to arrest or removal by force. The law was later put to the test in 1819 during the infamous Peterloo Massacre, in which a cavalry unit attacked a large group of protestors after they appeared to ignore a reading of the Riot Act. ****************************************************************************** Just how hot is it outside?
****************************************************************************** Trip Reports Frank Vanderschaaf On August 11 Cheryl and I left the house Saturday morning to go to Franklin to meet up with TN Chapter H for a ride to Campbell Station General Store in Culleoka where we met up with Alabama Chapters H, S, and T plus one couple from Alabama Chapter A. There were about 50 people there including Chapter TN-H. We had a good lunch and visit with everyone. On our way home we stopped and visited with them again at the Soda Pop Junction where they had stopped to enjoy some ice cream treats. After we returned home from our afternoon ride, we rested awhile then went to Chapter Z's meeting. We had a real good time there with lots of laughter and camaraderie with a great group of people to visit with. Lynnville, the home of the Soda Pop Junction Soda Pop Junction next to Big Johnny s Burger
Inside Soda Pop Junction Karen & David Hill On July 31, Frank, Cheryl, David and Karen headed over to Hermitage for Chapter A s gathering. They had a good meeting as usual but it was even better than usual because we ended up coming home with the Middle/West TN Traveling Plaque.
