I ve been looking for you all morning! Where have you been? Maria: Hi, Jack! In the library. I was reading The Tempest. I wanted to know something about the story before we see it tonight. Did you remember to get the tickets? Jack: That s why I was looking for you. Maria: Oh, no! Weren t there any left? Jack: No, it wasn t that. But Steve, my flatmate, has two tickets for tomorrow. He can t go, so he asked me if I wanted them. Maria: Brilliant! Free tickets! Jack: Well, not exactly. He said I could have them for half of what they cost at the box office. They re for the best seats in the theatre! The front row! Apparently they were a birthday present from an uncle of his. Maria: So he s going to sell his birthday present to you! If I were his uncle, I d feel a bit offended. Why doesn t he want them anyway? Jack: His favourite band is playing in Birmingham. They re only doing one night there and he really wants to see them. He couldn t go the last time they played in the UK because he was ill. He s explained everything to his uncle. He didn t mind at all. He even said he d go to the concert with Steve because he likes that band too. Maria: Well, if that s the case then I suppose it s OK to have his tickets. It would be a shame to waste them. Jack: Sure it would! Anyway, it s a good thing you forgot to get our tickets yesterday, isn t it? Now we ll have front row seats for half the price! Maria: We ll have to dress up though, won t we? We can t go in jeans. The people who sit in the expensive seats always look really smart. Jack: That s OK. I ll wear my suit. The one I bought for my interview. You must have a nice dress somewhere. You ve got tons of clothes! Maria: I ll look in my mum s wardrobe. She ll have something. We re the same size. Mmm I m beginning to look forward to this. It ll be like Prom night! Jack: But without the party! Or perhaps I should say buongiorno as this week s programme is about the Italian city of Naples. We re going to give you some ideas about what you can see and do in the city if you go there for a weekend city break. With just under a million inhabitants, Naples is the third largest city in Italy and very chaotic! Renting a car to get around is not a good idea because there are lots of traffic problems and few parking spaces. Sightseeing in the historic centre is best done on foot. For the hillier parts of town, there are the funiculars and a couple of elevators, although walking is never out of the question. Public transport is good and there s plenty of it but it s always very crowded. A single ticket, which allows you only one trip on the Metro and funiculars but as many as you like on buses, costs 1.10 and is valid for 90 minutes. A 24 hour ticket for unlimited travel on all metropolitan public transport from Monday to Friday costs 3.10; the 3-day ticket costs 20. If you only go to one museum in Naples, it should be the National Archaeological Museum. There are four floors of galleries to explore but before you start think about investing in a copy of the excellent museum guide you won t regret it! Or, if you just want to concentrate on the highlights, audioguides are available in English. Among the highlights are many of the best mosaics and frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as Greek and Roman classical sculptures. Admission is 6 euros 50 and there are reductions for under 25s and over 65s. The museum is open from 9.00 am until 7.30 pm every day except Tuesdays. For lovers of opera a visit to the San Carlo Theatre is a must. Inside there are six levels with about 200 boxes and an enormous stage with a unique backdrop that can be removed to show the gardens of the Royal Palace. Tickets are often difficult to find and fairly expensive, but hotels are often able to get them more easily. Guided tours are available at the weekend, between 2 and 3.30 in the afternoons. To book a tour, telephone: And after all that culture, you ll be more than ready to enjoy one of Naples gastronomic specialities: a pizza! For Sunday morning, we suggest a leisurely morning walk around Pozzuoli s atmospheric fish market. As well as hundreds of different types of 6 7

4 k e y t o t h e e x i t t e s t fish and shellfish caught that morning, the market also sells tasty sausages, cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables and crunchy local bread. Do as the locals do and put together a picnic lunch to have on nearby Monte Nuovo. The market is open from 7.30 to 1.30 in the mornings, Tuesdays to Sundays. Well, that s all for today. Next week...
