The ComBily - with a smiley Comenius Special TVWO/Bilingual Newsletter, 2nd Edition, May 2011 Revolting rhymes. By: Rianne To practise our English plus to have fun, we did a short role play. It was written by Roald Dahl. He makes from the normal fairytales a funny rhyme with a little twist at the end. Our fairytale was: The Three Little Pigs. It s about a hungry wolf who s walking through the woods and sees 3 pigs houses. The first two are not that smart, so that s why he can eat them, but the last one is really smart and doesn t want to be eaten. The third pig solves this problem by calling Red Riding Hood to help him, but if it s going to work, that s the question! In our role play we had 6 roles: Storyteller, Pig 1, Pig 2, Pig 3, Wolf and Red Riding Hood. We practised during English class and we made props at Arts And Design. And after a few weeks, we showed it to our parents on a special evening. We showed our role play and after that, Ms. Langenberg told us that we were going to LONDON! The reactions from the parents were really positive (about the role play and the London trip!) and it was really nice to do! 1
The city project. By: Corinna & Lorenzo With the city project we did a lot of exercises that had to do with the city. We are going to tell something about Technology, Geography, English and Arts and Design. 1. Technology: At technology we are building an enormous city on scale. We divided the city in different categories and everybody did at least one category. At the end, we put everything together and then you have your own mini city! You had to do it with tools like: the electrical sawing machine and materials like wood and plastic. 2. Geography: At geography we were looking at how a city developed. We looked how it started and how it was in the time of factories. And we learned that it was very dirty and not hygienic in that time because everything had to be close to the factories and it had to be built fast. So, actually, we learned how a city was built in the times of the industrial revolution. 3. Arts and Design: We made skyscrapers from all different tools and colors. They look really beautiful, I think. We spent a lot of hours on building the tower. They are made on scale. The towers may not be bigger than 80 cm, in real 800 metres. But we didn t reach the 80 cm. The highest tower is about 50 cm. Before we started building the towers we watched a PowerPoint Presentation to gain some inspiration and after that, we had to make at least three different sketches. We also had to make the final sketch, colored. Finally we got the instruction to actually make the best design. And I must say: the skyscrapers don t look bad. 4. English: Each of us got 2 cities, for example Bristol and Manchester. Then, you had to search for the history of the city, the number of inhabitants and all kinds of things that had to do with the city. With that information, we had to make our own PowerPoint presentation. We had to grade each other and give feedback. Later on, we zoomed in on London, for all kinds of other aspects, like cultural aspects, and things we definitely wanted to see when we would be there. 2
London By: Céline & Merel 1. Stena line We went to London with a ship called the Britannica. It was a beautiful ship. On the boat we looked in a shop and we were on the deck when the ship left. We slept with the girls in our own cabin. It was not very big, but it was nice. We had breakfast in the morning at half past five. After breakfast we picked up all the luggage and went off the boat to the train. Back to Holland: When we had to go back we had dinner on the boat. That was nice. We had a television on our room. So we watched also a little bit TV. In the morning we had breakfast at half past six. Then it was already the end of our trip. 2. Hotel: We were sleeping in a building opposite Hotel 65. It was a bit messy room where we slept (because of us), but it was good, we slept well and we had enough space, and we also had our own bathroom and toilet. 3. Underground: The underground is the metro in London. It is very clean. We travelled with the underground from place to place. Sometimes it was very busy in the underground, but sometimes it wasn t. It was nice to travel with the underground, but when you could sit on a bench, it was nicer. 4. City: When we were out of the ship and had dropped our bags at Hotel 65, we went to the city. There was the Big Ben, the London Eye and much more. We looked at some highlights and ate and drunk some things at a kind of restaurant. And of course, we shopped for some things. 3
5. Science museum: In the Science museum we visited four exhibitions: Exploring space, Who am I?, Atmosphere and Launch Pad. Exploring Space was about the space and earth. There were some rockets and a globe. On the globe you saw how the airplanes fly and the light in the world. That was nice to see. Who am I? was about yourself and your body. You could do a lot of games and they had an explanation about the subject of the game. There was a game that told you what kind of hand you had, a male or female hand. There was also a game where you could see what you look like when you were older. Atmosphere, that was about science and the climate. There was a game were you had to protect houses from water. You had to do that with three persons. Launch Pad, there you could do a lot of experiments. There were things with dry ice and laying blocks (Mr. Korbijn and Céline beat a world record). It was a nice exhibition. 6. Park: When we were back from the Science Museum, we went to Hyde Park. There we had a picnic with tortillas, chocolate bread and fruit. And after that, we played Hide and Seek. That was really fun. After that, we needed to make some questions to have an interview with strange people. When we were done with the questions, we needed to ask people. I thought it was scary, but other people just did like it was so normal to do. 7. Natural History Museum: In the Natural History Museum we walked in two groups (Merel, Rianne and Jeroen and Céline, Corinna and Lorenzo). We both visited the exhibitions: about minerals, a wooden tree on the roof and about the earth. In the exhibition about the earth they made a supermarket were you could feel how it is to be in an earthquake. The group of Céline also visited the exhibition about dinosaurs. It was interesting. We also saw some small exhibitions in the museum. 4
8. Food: We also ate other things than in Holland. The first morning, we ate all different things at the ship, like pancakes, bread, egg and all other things. That afternoon, we ate also all different things. Some people had a hotdog, others a wrap and others a donut (Mr. Korbijn). That evening, we ate pizza in Covent Garden. The next day we had breakfast in the hotel, there we had toast and cereals. That afternoon, we had a picnic. We ate tortillas, fruit and chocolate bread. And that evening, we ate at an Indian restaurant. Some people had chicken, and others lamb or other things. The morning after that, we had breakfast in the hotel again. So, again toast and cereals. That afternoon, we had an afternoon tea in a restaurant. With pie and scones. And that evening, we had dinner at the ship again. Some people had soup and other had chips. And again, that morning, we had breads and other thins at the ship. 5
What we re still going to do at TVWO: By: Jeroen 1. An American chef: On the first of June an American native speaker is coming to our class. She s a chef in a restaurant in Rotterdam. We are going to interview her and she s going to explain something about recipes and measurements in UK and America. Finally she s going to do a workshop with us. The activity that she s going to do with us is decorating cookies, with maybe homemade decorations. 2. Afternoon Tea in Class: Yes, we are very busy with food the last weeks, but we think that is very good for our tummies. At our last lesson of English, we will organize an Afternoon tea. With tea, nice food, games and the evaluation of the year. So, we are still going to have a lot of fun in class, still learn about the cultural aspects in Britain and learn about the cultural aspects from all over the world, because that s something that we have to learn at the Bilingual stream, but we don t mind! 6
