CAMMELL LAIRD FLAGSHIP COMPANY NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO. 1 Welcome to our newsletter - Cammell Laird FLAGSHIP, bringing you all the latest news from Cammell Laird. We aim to inform readers of the projects we have been awarded and the ones we have completed in the following sectors: COMMERCIAL We will also inform you of some in-house activities, Charity work & Apprentice news. COMMERCIAL The Ferry Season Cammell Laird continues to be at the forefront of Ferry and RO-RO vessel activity in the repair, build and conversion sectors. During 2013 Cammell Laird repaired, built or converted almost 250,000 Gross Tons of ferries and RO-RO ships for a wide range of Owners from all around the UK and during the first quarter of 2014 has continued to compete strongly in docking and repairing almost 150,000 Gross Tons for a range of Ferry operators. Ferry Owners and Operators from as far afield as Orkney & Shetland, the Scottish Isles and River Clyde have used the shipyard for a wide range of projects. Many regular customers operating UK mainland links to both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, those serving the Isle of Man and the local River Mersey ferries have also returned to the Birkenhead shipyard for an extensive range of services on both conventional & high speed vessels in steel and aluminium. BEFORE AFTER NorthLink Ferries new Branding Cammell Laird won the contract for 3 of the NorthLink Ferries annual overhaul - Hamnavoe, Hjaltland & Hrossey. Along with the overhaul and survey works was the introduction of a new brand to the vessels - Magnus the Viking now adorns the side of the vessels as can be seen in this photograph. The images on the top are Hrossey s before and after shots whilst in the Drydock in March 2014.

Sound of Seil (1387) and Sound of Soay (1388) are double ended 49.95m x 13.5m x 4m passenger/vehicle ferries with an open vehicle deck discharging fore and aft to linkspans at Hunter s Quay, Dunoon and McInroy s Point, Gourock, on the Firth of Clyde. The Ships are built to Lloyds Register A1 IWW with capacity for 200 passengers, up to 40 cars and the ability to load freight vehicles of 44 gross tonnes up to 14 tonne axle load. Propulsion is by two Rolls Royce Azimuth Thrusters, Type US 105/P6 CRP, one forward and one aft, each directly driven by a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine. The Ships have a 60 seat Passenger Lounge, external Passenger seating and Crew facilities. In the first 5 months of operational service on the Clyde the vessels have carried over 300,000 passengers between them, over 139,000 cars and just fewer than 10,000 commercial vehicles/coaches, having completed over 8,300 crossings. LENGTHENING THE HOY HEAD Early in 2013 Cammell Laird won a conversion contract from Orkney Ferries to lengthen the vessel Hoy Head from 39.5m to 53.3m. This increased the car capacity on the vessel from 14 to 24 cars or for up to three 16.5 metre HGVs and seven cars. This results in the vessel having the highest load capacity in the Orkney Ferries fleet. The 2.7m project was funded through the Council s capital programme. An 85 tonne midship section was built and inserted and all work to split and extend the vessel was completed in three days. The project also included the installation of a complete new propulsion system including two Volvo Diesel Engines, two Rolls Royce Aquamaster thrusters and an additional bow thruster and engine; improving the manoeuvrability and carbon footprint of the vessel. Passenger and crew areas were also remodelled improving this vital service for residents, businesses and tourists for the Orkney Islands Council. BEFORE LENGTHENING SPLIT READY FOR SECTION COMPLETED
LANGTON LOCK CAISSON No.3 Cammell Laird recently completed a 15 month refurbishment program for the No.3 Caisson to the Langton Lock entrance on the River Mersey. This extensive refurbishment contract for Peel Ports involved the removal of a large amount of mud and silt prior to commencement of works. All sealing face timbers were removed and repaired or replaced. Steelwork and pipework renewals were undertaken relating to the ballast tanks and pipe system and all the ballast tanks and pipework were leak and pressure tested to ASME rule requirements. Removal and refurbishment of the electrical distribution system, lighting and tank alarms was also carried out to allow cleaning and painting works to be completed. Geometric surveys were also completed on sealing faces, running tracks and bearing strips. As can be seen from the photograph the refurbishment left the Caisson looking as good as new on completion of the works. MODULAR CONSTRUCTION In 2010 Cammell Laird was awarded a highly prestigious contract by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance to build centre block units for the Royal Navy s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Based on the proven concept of delivering complete outfitted modules we have now delivered a total of 9 upper block units; the last of these making their journey from Birkenhead to Rosyth in early The contract was delivered to time and budgetary requirements and once again demonstrated the versatility and expertise of the Cammell Laird workforce and has also driven further investment in our site and facilities. Following on from this success we have recently commenced construction of 6 units for HMS Prince of Wales. Company MD Linton Roberts said This has been a terrific contract for the company to work on and I pay tribute to our staff and suppliers who have worked tremendously hard with the Aircraft Carrier Alliance to deliver these impressive structures.
Renewable Energy Offshore Base Port Facility 2013 was another very busy year in the ongoing development of the Gwynt y Môr Irish Sea Wind farm installation and the Cammell Laird Offshore Base Port Facility, which is currently leased to RWE Innogy in support of their construction and installation activities, has been a hive of activity. The Wind farm is due to be fully operational by late summer 2014 and this has required the installation of 160 steel monopile foundations and transition pieces off the North Wales Coast, the installation of two offshore substations, laying of all the inter-array cabling and the installation of the export cabling to the new shore side substation at St Asaph. In 2013 there have been over 150 shipping movements in and out of the Cammell Laird wet basin as the various installation and support vessels have been loading out equipment from the Offshore Base Facility from the 200m non-tidal heavy lift quay for transportation to the field. Work is now well on the way to completion in the field but there have been a further 25 vessel turnarounds in the wet basin during the 1st quarter of The 45 acre facility has been used since 2012 to receive by sea, store, set-up and then load out the monopiles and transition pieces. There is also a river pontoon on site allowing Crew Transfer Vessels access around the clock. Cammell Laird offers logistical, technical and engineering support skills to the developing UK Offshore Renewable market activities on a 24/7 basis from a unique location with an extensive and experienced supply chain and infrastructure.
Nuclear Power Plants Cammell Laird s success in modular construction over the years has lead to possible opportunities for building modules for the UK s new generation of nuclear power plants. The plan for the UK is based on building 16 gigawatts of electricity (GWe) of new nuclear power capacity, with the first new reactors operational around the end of the decade with a total investment of around 60 billion. What is particularly significant for Cammell Laird is that all sites for the proposed new Sizewell B nuclear power plants have access to the sea, taking away many of the delivery concerns faced on land. The UK currently has 16 nuclear power plants with a generating capacity of 10GWe, which is approximately a sixth of the UK s electricity. All but one of these stations will be closed by The exception is Sizewell B in Suffolk, the UK s only Pressurised Water Reactor, which began operations in There are significant advantages in the modular construction of major components and systems for the new Nuclear Power Plants in dedicated facilities. We have proven this with our successful production of units for the Royal Navy s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. There are 3 types of Nuclear power plant under consideration; the Hitachi-GEs Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (APWR) to be constructed at Wylfa on Anglesey and Oldbury in Gloucestershire; Areva s EPR at Hinkley in Somerset and Sizewell; and finally Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at Moorside next to Sellafield in Cumbria. This is all looking very exciting for Cammell Laird who are in a good position to deliver a high quality product, however challenging the task may be. The technology in a nuclear power plant is complex, large scale and demands the highest quality in execution at every stage of the process from concept, through manufacture and into full operation. AP1000 Under Construction Decommissioning One program in the nuclear sector that is currently delivering is the decommissioning of the UKs original nuclear research sites; first nuclear power plants; fuel manufacturing and reprocessing facilities. The scale of operations at Sellafield dominates the UK cleanup business and Cammell Laird have been active in this market for the past 4 years. This topic will be discussed in more details in a future edition of Flagship. Training Link Training of young engineers is seen as essential. Cammell Laird is involved in a number of initiatives forging closer links with both Liverpool and John Moore s Universities. This includes offering opportunities for engineering undergraduates to experience life in a live production environment. We have also provided access to the site in quiet hours for their Formula Student Teams to test their cars ahead of the main competition to be held at Silverstone Race circuit in July.
RFA Cluster Activities was another busy year for the RFA Flotilla and Cammell Laird continued to provide through life support services on a worldwide basis as part of the RFA Ship Cluster contract. The successful delivery of the efficient & cost effective Through Life Support concept resulted in Cammell Laird receiving confirmation of a further 5 year contract through to June AMP s (assisted maintenance periods) were completed overseas in 3 continents during 2013 on 6 different vessels and 3 major Refit Periods were commenced in Birkenhead on RFA Fort Rosalie, RFA Gold Rover and RFA Wave Ruler. The refits embraced an extensive range of activities on each platform including the following items of work: RFA Fort Rosalie: RFA Gold Rover: RFA Wave Ruler: New Ballast water treatment system design & installation Replace lifeboats & davits New bow thruster & control system Bridge equipment consolidation & full Bridge refurbishment Various structural modifications LR special survey carried out Accommodation refurbishment Installation of new Command & Comms systems New Inergen Drench System AC upgrades in Radio Room & Hospital Fit new emergency towing arrangment Grit blasting & coating of water ballast tanks 22,000 sq.m. Installation of new sewage treatment plant Upgrade of Integrated Platform management system Upgrade of Fire Detection System New Ballast water treatment system design & installation New 8 zone watermist system for selected machinery items Fort Victoria Refit 2014 The Fort Victoria is one of the largest vessels operated by the British Ministry of Defence and has played a key role in Naval Support activities on a worldwide basis since being commissioned in 1994, having recently completed a 3 year role as a Pirate Catcher off the coast of Somalia. The ship has just begun a major refit at Cammell Laird, which will enhance its capability for future roles, uplift the accommodation and maintain its engineering and electrical systems in line with current and future legislation amendments. The main jobs on this contract will include: Accommodation uplift; the replacement of six diesel generators; overhauling the engine and main propulsion systems and steering systems; installing of two ballast water treatment & RO plants; replacing two sewage treatment plants & fire detection system; new incinerator; upgrading all crane ammunition handling equipment. Meanwhile extensive general drydocking works will be undertaken. We will follow up on the progress of this refit in the next edition of this newsletter.
YARD IMPROVEMENTS & OTHER NEWS Surface Preparation Facility As part of our infrastructure improvements we have constructed a new facility specifically for blasting and painting large units. The new facility, measuring 25 x 32 x 10m high includes an additional, adjacent, hall for treating smaller units. We have also constructed an area for safe storage of hazardous liquids. Workshop Renovation Bays 14, 15 & 16 have recently been systematically renovated with new roofing, overhauled cranes, new flooring, new electrical circuits & LED lighting. Bay 15 is 180 m long x 22 m wide & 22 m to the roof, supported by a 70 tonne travelling overhead crane. Either side Bays 14 & 16 are 13 m wide and similar in length and height, each with 5 tonne overhead cranes. Technical Expertise Cammell Laird s Technical Department continues to grow in order to support our ongoing existing Cluster Contract with the RFA, the UK Carrier project and to ensure that we can service specific client requirements in the commercial marine, heavy fabrication and civil nuclear sectors. New Faces in Birkenhead We have welcomed several newcomers and former employees returning to Birkenhead in recent months. Tony Potter has returned as our Health, Safety & Environment Director and Andy Eastwood as our Quality Assurance Manager. Both Tony and Andy bring a wealth of experience to Cammell Laird having gained invaluable experience overseas for a number of years, so it s good to have them back. We also welcome Dave McConnell and Andy Askham to the Sales & Marketing team, developing our relationships with existing and potential new customers to extend our business in both the Commercial & Defence Marine sectors. As we continue to develop and expand our foothold in the Civil Nuclear and Renewable Energy sectors we are pleased to welcome John Eldridge to the company, who will be working alongside David Williams. QUALITY, HEALTH & SAFETY NEWS Health & Safety, Environmental & Quality Assurance Management The below quote on 1st April from Tony Potter, Cammell Laird Health, Safety & Environment Director summarises the results of the recent re-certification audits carried out by the Bureau Veritas team: As you are aware, we successfully concluded our accreditation audits with BV yesterday to the standards ISO 9001, ISO and BS OHSAS We will now be certified for a further three years. I would just like to thank all who worked extremely hard to the area plans issued in order to make this happen. And further, for the detailed reports provided by you all as part of our evidence gathering process. It was a big challenge in some areas but one in which you rose to and delivered very well. With this in mind, we now need to maintain the standards we have developed and further raise our game to the next level. The plans and procedures have been and continue to be rolled out across the business and must be referred to and used as necessary. Let us work together going forward to make this shipyard the envy of industry for not only the excellent product we produce but also world class HSEQ standards. Thanks to Tony and his team and all those involved every day in continuing to maintain and further improve our Health & Safety, Environmental & Quality Assurance Systems. The safety of our customers, workforce and suppliers is our number one priority Cammell Laird Management Hub Introduction We have now introduced a Management Hub to provide greater access to a wider audience of our company management systems. The HUB incorporates the management structures of HSE, HR and QA and went live in Q Vision Statement It is our vision that we, Cammell Laird, will be at the forefront of Occupational Health and Safety excellence within the Marine Services and Heavy Engineering industry both in the UK and beyond. This will be achieved by having a robust and measurable management system procedures, highly skilled, trained and competent employees and pro-active Management and Supervision. Further, Cammell Laird intends to be a world leader in Health, Safety and Environmental Management by 2019 for the industry sector.
APPRENTICE & CHARITY WORKS The Birkenhead Drill H.M.S. Birkenhead an iron hulled paddle steamer - was designed and built at John Laird shipyard (predecessor to Cammell Laird shipyard) and launched in the closing days of She left Portsmouth in January 1852 to take troops to fight in the Frontier War in South Africa, but on 26th February they hit rock, close in to the shore, slicing through the hull. Hundreds of soldiers drowned in their hammocks as they slept. Seven women and thirteen children were rowed away from the wreck to safety. To avoid the lifeboats being swamped the surviving officers and men were ordered to stand fast. The soldiers did not move even as the ship split in two and the gallant company slipped down into the waves. The women and children first ethos was later called the Birkenhead Drill and became a great naval tradition. I62 years later, a memorial has been erected in Birkenhead at Woodside Promenade. It consists of three steel panels surrounded by pebbles from the beach at Gansbaai, designed by Sixth Form College student Jemma Twigg and constructed by Cammell Laird apprentices. Continued Success for Cammell Laird Apprentices Cammell Laird Apprentices are continuing to impress in the Maritime & Engineering College North West which is where our annual apprentice intake begin their initial training. Since 2008 over 120 Cammell Laird apprentices have entered the College to commence their marine skills training and 55 of those have since completed their training period and are fully employed within our business. 61 are still in training and it is pleasing to see that we have such a high success rate. In November Sam Hankin, apprentice pipefitter, was crowned Apprentice of the Year The picture on the right shows Sam receiving his award from former Liverpool F.C. player Sammy Lee. Birkenhead Sixform Student Jemma Twigg It is important that our apprentices understand the long history of Cammell Laird and what happened to many of the ships built here, some of which, like HMS Birkenhead, became very famous for what they did or what happened to them. This memorial helps ensure even after more than 160 years that the heroism and courage of the men that day is not forgotten. Cammell Laird chief executive John Syvret CBE said: This is a very powerful initiative that the company wanted to support, given our connection to HMS Birkenhead. It is fitting that the story of the ship and the origin of women and children first, should be remembered in the form of such a striking memorial for future generations. John Syvret and the Cammell Laird apprentices James Harding of Cammell Laird took home the Welder of the Year Award, second from the left in the picture below. The College trains our future Boilermakers, Pipefitters & Mechanical Engineers supported by 3 Cammell Laird mentors working with them during their first year there is no doubt that this is reaping its rewards for both apprentices and Cammell Laird. Zero to Hero - Princes Trust A team of 4 first year apprentices took part in the Zero to Hero Challenge by Princes Trust in the last quarter of 2013 and were awarded first place by producing a calendar for Fairbridge raising 28,000. The apprentices have raised over 120,000 for the charity over the last 5 years. The picture (Left) shows Sir Michael Bibby presenting the apprentices, Matt Paxton, Greg Drummond, Nick Silvano & Phil Smith with their award. Christmas Charity Appeal 2013 Workers, Management and Subcontractors at Cammell Laird helped to raise 12,000, over the Christmas period, for two local hospices Zoë s Place & Claire House. These two charities rely mainly on fundraising and public donations in order to run. The picture above shows reprepresentatives from the two charities and their mascots receiving cheques for 6,000 each. The presentation took place in the boardroom at Cammell Laird late January.
