Visit the city of Dijon. Filled with elegant Medieval and Renaissance buildings, the lively center is wonderful for strolling, enjoying local food and fine wine, as well as shopping. (B, D) / Kyriad Prestige Dijon Nord Valmy or similar Day 5 Saturday Dijon to Lyon Enjoy a leisurely morning in Dijon before your tour takes you farther south to a local mustard museum where you can learn all about the condiment that made Dijon famous. Enjoy an interactive visit to discover ancient tools and materials used in the surprising world of mustard production. After the visit you have some time to spend in Beaune. Wander through its typical cobblestone streets, see historical mansions, medieval half-timbered houses, flowered squares, and gardens. (B, D) Interlaken, Switzerland Day 6 Sunday Mâcon sur Saône (6:00 AM -7:00 PM) Wake up in Mâcon on the River Sâone. Buildings painted burnt sienna, buttermilk, and rose evoke a distinctly Mediterranean feel, as if the city draws inspiration from the south. To get a feel of this town, head for the terrace of the café in the Maison de Bois, a house covered in elaborate, if not grotesque, wooden carvings normally reserved for interiors. Alternatively, you may join your fellow travelers on an excursion to the nearby Cluny Cloister (optional). (B, L, D) Day 7 Monday Chalon sur Saône (3:00 AM -2:30 PM) and Tournus (5:30 PM - 6:30 PM) Chalon is a lively town on the River Saône. The cathedral square has cafés and specialty shops. There are fine half-timbered houses overlooking the Place St. Vincent in the center; Rue de Châtelet and Grande Rue are also worth visiting to see 17th and 14th century facades. Chalon is also the starting point for excursions into the area that will return to Tournus. Such excursions take you to the Bresse/ Louhans market, where the great chefs like Paul Bocuse shop frequently for their haute cuisine restaurants, or to the vineyards of Burgundy. After lunch the Stella will depart for a leisurely trip along the river to nearby Tournus, a small town with a population of about 6,000 inhabitants. Around dinner time the Stella will head back to Lyon overnight. (B, L, D) Live cooking on board Day 8 Tuesday Lyon (6:00 AM - 3:00 PM) After having discovered the Sâone ports north of Lyon, we will return for another visit to Lyon and will re-enter the Rhône on a southbound course. You will have time to discover the city on your own or with an optional shore excursion. The old town Vieux Lyon features Renaissance houses and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Furthermore the city is known for its high quality silk products and the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière which sits above the city; you can discover both with an optional organized walking city tour. (B, L, D) Day 9 Wednesday Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10:30 AM - 11:30 PM) to Avignon (arrive 1:30 PM) As the Stella makes its way south, we enter the Provence region. A quick stop in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the morning gives you a chance to marvel at the sight of the medieval castle throning over the village which is surrounded by the vineyards that produce the famous heavy red native to the area. Soon after lunch we will arrive in Avignon where we will stay almost a full day and night. On the bridge of Avignon, we all dance there the words of a folk song from the 15th century pay tribute to the unbridled joie de vivre at the foot of the Palace of the Popes. This joie de vivre is still very much alive today. (B, L, D) Switzerland Chateauneuf du Pape Day 10 Thursday Avignon (until noon) and Arles (3:30 PM - 10:00 PM) Ringed by incredibly preserved 800 year old stone ramparts, graceful Avignon s turn as the seat of papal power bestowed upon the city a treasury of magnificent art and architecture. The ramparts were erected to keep the plague and invaders out during the turbulent Middle Ages, but its early history is much older than the popes. (B, L, D) Day 11 Friday Viviers and La Voulte As the Stella makes her way northbound again, she travels along the Ardeche which runs parallel to the Rhône in long stretches here. Relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the passing landscape and take one last opportunity to immerse yourself in everything the ship has to offer. This could be the best time for a massage treatment, a dive into the pool, or simply to enjoy a good book on the sun deck. (B, L, D) Day 12 Saturday Lyon to Bern After breakfast it is time to say good bye to the crew of the Stella. You will meet your Tour Director in port again as it is time to head to the Swiss Alps for more breathtaking scenery. This morning s route takes you via Geneva to the Swiss Capital of Bern and will offer splendid lake and mountain views. Bern is often dismissed as old fashioned and slow by its fellow countrymen, yet wandering through the charming old town, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will surely be enchanted and disagree. Bern s flag-festooned, cobbled center, rebuilt in distinctive grey-green sandstone after a devastating 1405 fire, is an aesthetic delight, with 6km of covered arcades, cellar shops and bars. They spread the word and made it what it is today: Germany s most famous tourist attraction!
