BALTIC DELIGHTS A 10-night cruise aboard Star Breeze with Diane Rehm Cruise the beautiful Baltic Sea and explore its coastal cities in this exuberant season of verdant landscapes and the magical White Nights. Board the 212-guest Star Breeze in Copenhagen to call at ports in Poland, Lithuania and Estonia, spend two nights in Russia s great westward-facing city of St. Petersburg, cruise down the Gulf of Finland to Helsinki and cross to Stockholm. At each port you can choose from several optional shore excursions, some strenuous, others more relaxing, all illuminating. You can also explore most of these cities on your own. Every cabin on Star Breeze is a suite, with a comfortable sitting area by the window or French balcony giving you ever-changing views of coastal cities, archipelagos and the sea itself. On board there will be time for dining, rest and rejuvenation, and group conversations with Diane Rehm. Formerly host of The Diane Rehm Show, she continues to contribute to the national discussion of politics and culture with a weekly podcast series, On My Mind. There s much to discover and to savor aboard Star Breeze and ashore in the historic cities that encircle the Baltic. To linger a few days in Copenhagen or Stockholm, add the pre-tour, the post-tour or perhaps both! l l 1

A message from Diane Rehm The trip we ve planned for summer 2018 delves into the diverse countries around the Baltic Sea. Each port of call has its own distinct character, but you ll discover common threads in their styles and histories. One is the mingling of land and water in cities built on islands, laced with rivers and canals, and bound to the sea. The days are pleasantly cool, and the daylight gracious, lingering long into the evening and returning in the early hours. We embark Star Breeze in the city that is, as the song says, Wonderful Copenhagen. Sailing east, we ll call at Gdansk, the Polish city that gave life to the Solidarity Movement, and at the restored Estonian capital of Tallinn. Then we have two days in St. Petersburg, with a chance to attend a classic Russian ballet in an historic theater, and a full day in Helsinki before we leave the ship in Stockholm. Star Breeze is a delightful small ship, or large yacht! All the staterooms are suites designed with a comfortable sitting area near your window or balcony slider. You can read more about the ship on page 14, but be assured that the staff will take good care of us. We ll have time to enjoy the good company aboard and to share our thoughts on our travels and on events back home. I look forward with great pleasure to this adventure. Whatever you imagine you ll experience, I think you will find it, and more. To discuss the trip and reserve your suite on Star Breeze, call Cross-Culture Journeys at We will be glad to meet you in Copenhagen and to welcome you aboard! With best wishes, Diane Rehm Host/producer of podcast series On My Mind 2

Baltic Delights June 26 July 7, 2018 The optional shore excursions mentioned here are for When the 2018 excursions are available, they will be sent to those who contact Cross-Culture Journeys about the cruise. Tuesday, June 26 DEPART U.S. Depart from your U.S. gateway for Copenhagen, Denmark. If you are taking the Copenhagen Pre-tour, see the Extension itinerary on page 9 for today and tomorrow. Wednesday, June 27 ARRIVE COPENHAGEN, DENMARK BOARD STAR BREEZE WELCOME DINNER Arrive at Copenhagen Airport where you will be met and transferred to the dock to board Star Breeze. Join your fellow travelers and Diane Rehm for an introduction to the ship and the cruise, followed by the Captain s reception and welcome dinner. Tonight you cruise into the Baltic, bound for the town of Gudhjem on Bornholm Island. D Thursday, June 28 GUDHJEM, ON BORNHOLM ISLAND, DENMARK Bornholm Island is Denmark in miniature, complete with fertile fields, forests, craggy granite cliffs, and inviting white beaches. Its strategic value is suggested by the four extant round churches that once doubled as fortresses. The extraordinary clear light on the island has long attracted painters, whose colorful work is displayed at several museums including two in Gudhjem. Glass and ceramic workshops also welcome visitors. Enjoy the sight of red-roofed buildings clustered around the harbor, and sample some of the traditional smoked herring at one of the smokehouses. The ruins of the medieval Hammershus Fortress are accessible from Gudhjem by a local bus that follows the coast. In the late afternoon Star Breeze sets out across the Baltic for Gdansk, Poland. B/L/D Friday, June 29 DENMARK GDANSK, POLAND Gdansk is one of Poland s larger cities and its principal seaport. After extensive damage during World War II the Old Town has been faithfully reconstructed with guidance from documents, photographs and drawings, and with the re-use of every ornament rescued from the rubble. Neptune s Fountain is the iconic symbol of Gdansk, reflecting its past as a free Hanseatic city. Mariacka Street, between St. Mary s Gate and the imposing brick St. Mary s Church, offers a lively atmosphere and shops for amber and other regional goods. Gdansk is also the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, a vital force in ending Soviet rule of Poland. 6 Saturday, June 30 KLAIPĖDA, LITHUANIA Klaipėda, where the Danė River flows into the Baltic, is Lithuania s only port. The Lithuanian Sea Museum features maritime exhibits and sea mammals in a 19th-century fort at the water s edge. Wood-frame buildings in German style line the streets of the Old Town. Theater Square, the city s main gathering spot, is home to the neoclassical Drama Theater and a fountain sculpture recalling a beloved work by the poet Simon Dach, a native of Klaipėda. Local legends and folklore are also a presence in civic life, from the playful statues in Old Town to the wooden sculptures from Lithuanian fairy tales at Witches Hill. One of today s optional excursions explores the Witches Hill legends; another takes you to Curonian Spit National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for Europe s highest sand dunes. More options are a Lithuanian wine and cheese tasting, an exploration of village life in the country under Soviet rule and today, and a tour of a Soviet nuclear weapons site. Return to the ship for dinner and the night as Star Breeze follows the Baltic coast northward. B/L/D Sunday, July 1 AT SEA Spend a relaxing day aboard as your ship cruises toward Tallinn, Estonia. One of the three discussions planned with Diane Rehm will be held today. You may try the ship s whirlpool, enjoy a book, a yoga class and the good company around you, and take in the sight of sea, coast and sky from the ship s lounge or the sitting room of your suite. Early tomorrow morning Star Breeze will arrive in Tallinn, at the mouth of the Gulf of Finland. B/L/D Monday, July 2 TALLINN, ESTONIA Disembark after breakfast to explore Tallinn. The Medieval Old Town within the city walls is a thriving city center where the spires of 14th-century churches soar above cafés and shops. You ll find impressive guild houses, the ancient (though thrice burned and rebuilt) St. Olaf s Church and other architectural treasures. In the adjacent Rotermann Quarter abandoned factories have been renovated and repurposed as modern housing, shops and restaurants around a festive central square. Another Tallinn landmark is Peter the Great s exquisite Kadriorg Palace, now Estonia s museum for Russian and Western European art. You have several optional tours to choose from, including a walking and driving tour of city highlights, a chocolate-making workshop, a meeting with an Estonian diplomat followed by a walking tour, an overview of Soviet Tallinn, and an option that combines a tour of Old Town with a visit to an Estonian home. Re-board Star Breeze by early afternoon to begin your journey up the Gulf of Finland to St. Petersburg. Throughout your trip the days have been longer than in the U.S., but starting tonight you are in the realm of the White Nights where there s sun or civil twilight for almost 22 hours. B/L/D 5

Tuesday, July 3 ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA Early this morning, though well after the 3:45am sunrise, your ship approaches the magnificent city on the Neva that Tsar Peter the Great founded in Enjoy the sight of its gleaming domes as you look forward to discovering the magical Venice of the North in its loveliest season. The Neva flows through St. Petersburg, as do several smaller rivers and a network of canals. Across them stand nearly 350 bridges that range from imposing drawbridges to smaller spans with graceful wrought-iron railings. Star Breeze will remain in port through tomorrow afternoon, giving you time for at least two optional daytime excursions. Among the great monuments of St. Petersburg are the famed Hermitage Museum, housed in the former Winter Palace, the opulent Catherine Palace and Peter the Great s palace at Peterhof, inspired by Versailles. The boulevard Nevsky Prospekt, adorned with handsome buildings, squares and bridges, is the shopping and entertainment center of the city. You can tailor your two days in St. Petersburg to your particular interests with your choice of the following optional excursions and sites you visit on your own. Three options take you to the Hermitage Museum, housed in the former Winter Palace. Within its 353 galleries are vast holdings including Catherine the Great s major purchase of Dutch and Flemish paintings, collections of masterpieces by Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Titian and many others, and stunning artifacts of czarist Russia. One tour focuses on the gold and diamond-laden treasures; others feature selected galleries of paintings and sculpture. You may choose to explore the great palaces of the city and the surrounding countryside. One option allows you a day at the Catherine Palace in Pushkin (Tsarskoe Selo) and the Grand Paul Palace and gardens nearby. Another visits Peter the Great s splendid summer palace and elaborate gardens at Peterhof in conjunction with a city tour. A tour of St. Petersburg s canals and graceful bridges ends with a visit to the ornate Yusupov Palace. An optional tour within the city combines the ancient Peter & Paul Fortress and Cathedral with a ride over the Neva to the iconic St. Isaac s Cathedral with sweeping views from its colonnade. There s another focused on aspects of daily life such as the grand metro stations and the markets. A panoramic tour is suited for those who avoid extended walking and climbing. There are also options for half-day or full-day personalized tours for small groups in a private car or van with an English-speaking guide/driver. Tonight you may attend an optional performance of one of the classic Russian ballets at the historic Musical Comedy Theatre, formerly the Grand Palace Theater and now a venue for ballet. The theater is in the Golden Triangle of St. Petersburg near the boulevard Nevsky Prospekt, close to the Russian Museum, the Mikhailovsky Theater and other landmarks. B/L/D 6

islands in the Helsinki Archipelago. At the end of the afternoon board Star Breeze for dinner and a relaxing evening. B/L/D Wednesday, July 4 ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA St. Petersburg is so rich in art, historic sites and beautiful vistas that you will easily fill your second day with the optional tours or independent walks you did not fit into the first! Continue to discover St. Petersburg until late afternoon; then return to Star Breeze, which is scheduled to sail out at 6pm B/L/D Thursday, July 5 HELSINKI, FINLAND Helsinki, centered on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland, mingles evidence of its years under Russian rule with Art Nouveau design and clean-lined modern style. Facing the harbor on Suomenlinna Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a fortress built by the early Czars that is now a prime residential area. The seaside Katajanokka district is dominated by the Russian Orthodox Uspenskii Cathedral, an imposing monument of red brick. A walk along Helsinki s main avenue, Mannerheimintie, takes you by the National Museum, the contemporary art museum Kiasma, and the Parliament. Here and in Senate Square neoclassical and Art Nouveau design is interspersed with modern structures by Alvar Aalto and others. Aleksanterinkatu and Market Square are the site of markets, shops and cafés. From Senate Square it s just over a mile, and a most interesting route, to the famed Stone Church (Temppeliaukion Kirkko), excavated from solid rock. You ll be in Helsinki from late morning until early evening, when you re-board Star Breeze for the Åland Islands. You can choose from optional tours that acquaint you with the city, either a walking tour or a tour of highlights including the Rock Church, or opt for one that combines Helsinki highlights with a Finnish food tasting or a visit to a home in the countryside. You might take advantage of the city s maritime environs by choosing a kayak tour or speedboat adventure among the several hundred Friday, July 6 MARIEHAMN, ÅLAND ISLANDS, FINLAND Spend the morning cruising westward toward the Gulf of Bothnia, which separates mainland Finland and Sweden. By mid-day you will reach Mariehamn, capital of the Åland Islands. This archipelago of several thousand islands is an autonomous region under Finnish sovereignty, but the language spoken is Swedish. Mariehamn is home to nearly half the islands inhabitants. One attraction you can visit on your own is the four-masted windjammer Pommern, built in Glasgow in 1903 and now a museum ship. Others are the 13th-century castle Kastelholm, several medieval churches, and the Jan Karlsgården homestead, an open-air museum of 18th-century farm life. Return to the ship, which departs this evening for the Stockholm Archipelago and the end of your Baltic journey. B/L/D Saturday, July 7 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN Cruise through the stunning Stockholm Archipelago early in the morning on your way to the harbor. We will disembark Star Breeze after breakfast. If you are adding the Stockholm Post-tour, see the Extension itinerary on page 11. If you are returning home today, transfer to Stockholm Arlanda Airport for your flight to the U.S. Those leaving on mid-afternoon or later flights can join an optional morning tour that visits six districts of the city including the medieval old town Gamla Stan and the parks of Djurgarden Island. The tour includes a transfer to the airport. B 7

Copenhagen Pre-Tour Extension $895 per person additional $495 for single supplement June 24 26, 2018 Sunday, June 24 DEPART U.S. Depart from your U.S. gateway for Copenhagen, Denmark. Monday, June 25 ARRIVE COPENHAGEN TRANSFER TO HOTEL TIME ON YOUR OWN Arrive at Copenhagen Airport where you will be met and transferred to your downtown hotel. After time to rest and refresh, go out for a walk and dinner on your own. In summer Copenhagen is an exuberant city filled with both residents and visitors enjoying the warm days and long summer evening. You ll find outdoor entertainment, and dinner or refreshments, in the famed Tivoli Gardens or at restaurants throughout the city. Tuesday, June 26 ELSINORE, THE SETTING OF HAMLET LOUISIANA MUSEUM KAREN BLIXEN HOUSE TIME ON YOUR OWN This morning we ll drive to Kronborg, the castle that is the setting for Hamlet. It s less than an hour north of Copenhagen on the Øresund, which divides Denmark from Sweden. The site is widely known as Elsinore, English for Helsingør, the town that surrounds it. Built as a strategic fortress, the castle was redesigned in less threatening times as a magnificent Renaissance palace, only to be overrun by Sweden in 1658 and long used for military purposes. Another restoration in the 1930s prepared Kronborg for visitors. Within the castle walls are the royal apartments furnished and decorated in 17th-century style, the great hall lined with paintings and the smaller hall with tapestries, and the chapel, restored with its original furnishings. From Kronborg, drive south along the Øresund to Louisiana, site of a museum that draws together the beauties of landscape, architecture and art. Opened in 1958 to display Danish art, it soon expanded to encompass international artists, both established and less known. The name Louisiana was chosen by the original building s previous owner, all three of whose wives were named Louise, and was retained by the museum. That building is now enlarged with open galleries that provide views of the bucolic environs and outdoor sculpture. There will be time for lunch on your own either at the museum café or at a restaurant in Humlebaek. Karen Blixen, who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen, is best known for her life and work in Africa, but Rungsted was her birthplace and her home. We will see the house with its original furnishings, the Karen Blixen Museum, and the park and bird sanctuary. Return to Copenhagen in the late afternoon, and choose a restaurant for dinner on your own as you enjoy one more evening in this vibrant city. B Wednesday, June 27 CITY TOUR EMBARK STAR BREEZE WELCOME DINNER Your city tour this morning will encompass several of Copenhagen s palaces, including Christianborg Palace, seat of the Danish Parliament, and Rosenborg Palace where the crown jewels are housed. Explore the Old Town and Nyhavn, which is in fact not a New Harbor but a charming and evocative old one, and pay a visit to the iconic Little Mermaid statue inspired by Hans Christian Andersen s tale. After time for lunch on your own, transfer with your group to the dock and board Star Breeze for your Baltic cruise. For the rest of this day, see the cruise itinerary on page 3. B/D 9

Among your choices are the Skansen Open-air Museum of 18th-century life, the Rosendal Palace, and the Royal Djurgården itself. If the sounds of ABBA have been part of your life, you may enjoy the ABBA Museum, only a few minutes walk from Vasa. We will return to the hotel in the late afternoon. Have dinner on your own and take advantage of the evening light to discover more of the city. B Sunday, July 8 GAMLA STAN (OLD TOWN) CHOICE OF ACTIVITIES ON YOUR OWN Begin the day with a tour of Gamla Stan, the Old Town where you will find the Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and streets lined with medieval buildings. Have lunch on your own at one of the cafés in the area. This afternoon you may continue to explore Old Town, which is not far from your hotel, or visit your choice of other sites on your own. Fotografiska, a museum of contemporary photography in the former Customs House, is located about a mile from Gamla Stan on Södermalm. Boats leave hourly from a dock near City Hall for Drottningholm Palace, built in the 17th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the home of the royal family. The Palace Theater, the best-preserved 18th-century theater in Europe, still uses its original stage machinery. Your tour manager can assist you with these and other options.
