Clay Ave, Ferguson, MO FROM THE BRIDGE NOW HEAR THIS Sunday, May 17, 2015, had members of the boat club enjoy a great picnic, camaraderie and great sailing weather. It started out as if it might rain, but as it turned out the weather was in our favor. In attendance were members we had not seen in quite a while. We had the pleasure of the company of Norm Kalaskie and his wife, Betty (great potato salad and pineapple upside down cake. Dave St Clair and his wife Dee provided us with deviled eggs; Luther and Geneva Disher, who had the works potato salad, macaroni salad, ham salad, chicken salad, cheese tray, and lots of other goodies, too many to mention. Thanks for making sure the crew got fed. In attendance were also Emil Wolfshoeffer, John Ziemer, his daughter and her fiancé. We had lots of people stop by and enjoy watching the running of the boats. Thank you to those of you who renewed your membership, dues are now past due. Hope to see you at the Alton Lock and Dam, Saturday, May 30, The Parks Department will provide us with tents, tables and chairs. This should be a fun day. Remember Ballwin which will be Saturday June 6, They will provide us with tents, tables and chairs. Thank you to Michelle Musgrave who helped get everything organized, our new member Russ Wicks, who will be our liaison with Ballwin. Called Robert Schmidt s house and he is recuperating at home. If you have moved since your last renewal, please note change of address, etc. Thank you, George Kirby The St. Louis Admirals R/C Model Boat Club Secretary s Report for May Call to Attention: Commodore Jane Rivers opened the meeting at 1905 hours at St. Stephens Episcopal Church with the pledge of allegiance. There were 11 members present. Skipper s Tales: A. Dave St. Clair, Kent Morgan and Bob Keeler sailed at Ferdinand Park on Monday, prior to the dinner and meeting. Dave ran the American Enterprise fishing boat to which he had just finished adding lights, smoke and sound. B. John Ziemer is working on a fireboat. Paul Kirby is constructing a runabout from plans from a Sterling kit; just the plans, no kit. Mike Alligood has started building another pleasure craft to add to his fleet. George Kirby is working to add a rotating beacon to lighthouse which he can use for both his garden railroad and nautical activities. Report from Homeport: A. Status of Club Members: We have been unable to obtain additional information regarding Robert Schmidt s health status. B. New member Russell Wick joined us at this meeting. C. Tom Karpel enjoyed our club, but due to health issues, will not rejoin. He wished to thank everyone who made him feel welcome. D. Secretary s Report: The April minutes were published in Broadside Newsletter, and were approved. Note: Check to see if your SSMA is due for renewal E. Treasurer s Report: George reported the current financial status and the amount donated to the St. Stephens food pantry. The report was approved.

4 Fleet Information: The club has received an invitation to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum 39 th Annual Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest and Display in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on May 15-17, A. Club picnic will be held at St Ferdinand Park on 3 rd Sunday in May (May 17) in conjunction with the normal sailing day. Each member is to bring his/her own food, drinks, and lawn chairs. B. The club will participate in the Great Rivers Festival at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton on May 30, 2015 from 12 noon to 6 PM. Bring boats for display and small boats for running in a small pond in front of the museum. Club insurance has been obtained for the event. C. Commodore Jane has received confirmation for the club to sail at Forest Park Boathouse on June 1, 2015 on our regular 1 st Monday from 1 PM to 4 PM with reservations to eat dinner there afterwards, the meeting will be at 7PM at St. Stephens Church in Florissant. D. The club will be participating at the VP Fair event at the Boathouse in Forest Park on July 2, 3. E. Regatta Chairperson Bob Keeler: 1. A meeting by the Regatta committee was held to start the planning. The consensus was that the rules from last year will be retained. 2. We will have the following awards: Best of Show, Commodore s Award, Boat House Award, and Skippers Award. 3. Kent Morgan agreed to compose a flyer for the Regatta and Phil Frisch offered to print copies which we can distribute to the local hobby shops. 4. Bob Keeler and Chris Kuntz will visit Budget Signs in Wood River, Illinois where the previous awards were purchased for ideas for our new awards. (This has been done.) Commodore Jane had a stained glass sailboat which would fit nicely on a plaque. Any other suggestions would be welcomed. F. Commodore Jane is waiting to find out about participating at Benton Park. G. The club will participate at the Ballwin Days Festival at Vlasis Park, June 6, Insurance for this event has been applied for from SSMA. H. The September Meeting was changed to September 14 since the 7 th is Labor Day. I. Contact Commodore Jane to order your club shirts cost is $8.00 each. The club now has the embroidered club logo computer program and we are checking to see who wants a hat with the logo already attached or wants the patch only and they get their own hat and/or shirt and sew it on. Hats with logo will be $18.00; patches will be $ See attached for sample pictures of hats. Hat samples can be seen at the North Carolina hat supplier at J. Remember that Commodore Jane has asked for club members to write about their favorite boat and their reasons behind their choice. It can be more than one boat. Raffle: The winners for gift cards to Mark Twain Hobby Center were Jane Rivers and Russ Wick. Show and Tell: A. Dave St. brought the Amsterdam, a Billings boat that he had decked out in multiple LED lights outlining the hull and other lights also.

5 B. Mike Alligood brought the hull of his latest creation for a large pleasure craft based on a boat he saw on an old episode of Colombo. He drew the plans as well as scratch building the hull. C. After the meeting, Russell showed us a hull which he was building of the battle cruiser USS Lexington which was change to America s first aircraft carrier. He is building it from naval plans for the battle cruiser originally proposed. He had the plans enlarged to a 9 foot model and had the frames laser cut. He also bought a vehicle to fit his model. Can t wait to see the finished model. The next meeting will be June 1, The meeting terminated at 20:12 hours. Respectfully submitted, Bob Keeler ********************************************************************************************************* The Carnatic was a 1,776 GRT steam-powered wood on iron constructed Clipper Ship built at Samuda Brothers, Cubitt Town, Isle of Dogs, Poplar, UK for the Penninsula & Orient S.N. Co., London (later known as the P& O Line). When her keel was laid in early 1862, she was originally named Mysore. However, when she was launched 12 June1862 she was renamed the Carnatic. Completed 25 April 1863, she was 89.4 meters (293.3 feet) in Length, 11.6 meters (38.06 feet) in beam, and 7.8 meters (25.60 feet) in draught. The ship was outfitted with square-rigged sails typically of clipper ships of the era, and also had a 4-cylinder compound inverted steam engine from Humphry s and Tennant, London, which provided 2,442 HP to a single shaft and a 3-blader propeller. On 27 June 1863 she sailed for Calcutta where she assigned service on the Suez-Bombayand China route. The Sue canal would not be completed until September 1869, so at that time Suez was a seaport where ship s cargoes and passengers were embarked or were delivered too. In 1867, Captain Philip Buton Jones took command of the ship, and by all accounts was considered a seaman of the ablest means. At 1000 on the morning of 12 September 1869, the Carnatic departed Suez for Bombay with 34 passengers, 176 crew, and a cargo consisting of copper sheeting bales of cotton, Royal Mail, and 440,000 GBP in specie which was destined for the mines in India. As the ship headed south Captain Jones remained on the bridge personally oversee the ship s navigation through the narrow passages and hazards of the Gulf of Suez. Maintaining a speed of 11 knots, the ship continued south throughout the day, with evening approaching when the Ashrafi Light was sighted at However, no bearing on the light was taken. As the watch team changed at midnight, the Ashrafi Light was well astern of the

6 ship. At September, the Second Officer became aware that Shadwan Island lay dead ahead. Captain Jones ordered a new course which he believed would allow the ship to clear the island. However, at 0118 waves were sighted off the starboard bow indicating a reef. The helm was put hard over to starboard and engines to full back, but to no avail The ship hit the reef of Sha ab Abu Nuhas and was hard aground. Captain Jones then conducted a thorough inspection of the ship and determined that the pumps could handle the water that the ship was taking on. As there was no apparent danger to the passengers or crew he ordered that everyone was to remain onboard. At dawn, Captain Jones realized that the ship was hard aground and ordered some of the cargo of cotton bales thrown overboard to lighten the ship in an attempt to refloat her on the changing tide. This, however, proved unsuccessful. Some passengers requested to disembark and make for Shadwan Island, a request which Captain Jones refused as he was expecting the S. S. Sumatra to pass near the Carnatic s position, inbound for Suez, in the near future. And although the ship was taking on water, the pumps were controlling the flooding, the ship had power and appeared to still be sound. As the day wore on there was no sign of any passing ships, so Captain Jones decided that all passengers and crew would spend another night onboard the ship, although some passengers again requested to disembark for Shadwan Island. As the ship sat on the reef, it had been swinging from side-to-side with the waves, which unbeknownst to captain or crew, was slowly weakening the ship s keel. At 0200 on 14 September the water level in the engine-room reached the ship s boilers which resulted in the ship losing all power (and loss of the pumps as well!) At daybreak, with the ship flooding uncontrollably, Captain Jones gave the order to abandon ship with women and children being order the first to depart the ship. The first Of the women and children had just been put into a lifeboat when the ship suddenly broke in half. The after section of the ship immediately went to the bottom resulting in the loss of 5 of the passengers and 26 crew. The forward section of the ship rolled over onto its port side taking the remainder of the passengers and crew with it. The passengers and crew in the water struggled for their lives and many managed to make it to the top of the reef. The survivors managed to make it to Shadwan Island in the remaining lifeboats, arriving on the island at sunset. A signal fire was started atop the island which was later sighted by the passing S. S. Sumatra who rescued the survivors. 31 people lost their lives in the sinking of the ship. Captain Jones was ordered to England to stand before a formal Board of Enquiry where it was determined that the grounding of the Carnetic was the result of negligence on the captain s part. Captain Jones Master ticket was suspended for nine months. However, Captain Jones never went to sea again The Carnatic s cargo was salvaged in the weeks following the sinking where 40,000 GBP of cargo and specie were recovered.
