3 Exploration meets relaxation Exciting, surprising and enlightening, a Viking river journey is like no other. As rich in natural beauty as it is in fascinating culture, it gives you a unique view of each country s destinations and takes you straight to their heart. Days are filled with exploration, new discoveries are made, along with new friends. Nights reveal cities illuminated by twinkling lights and usher in relaxed entertainment over drinks and conversation. It s a journey of new experiences and familiar comforts. Of seeing and doing. Of celebrating moments and creating memories. And it starts right here. 3

4 The new way to travel is thousands of years old For centuries, rivers have been the life force of the countries through which they flow. Cities have grown along their banks, towns have prospered and people have travelled their waters, connecting to each other and the wider world. And when you travel by river, you see the world in a completely new and unique way. Gliding through timeless landscapes into the heart of each destination, you can step ashore and immediately start exploring. A river cruise is like lots of city breaks rolled into one. Imagine. One evening you re dining under the twinkling lights of Budapest s Chain Bridge, the next, you re listening to a concert of classical music in Vienna. Is there a more rewarding way to travel? 4

18 Our river ships Innovation. Imagination. Listening to what our guests want. Having the courage to follow our dreams. These are the things that distinguish Viking from all other river cruise lines, and make our ships the most admired and awarded in the world. Our river cruise fleet has grown to more than 60 ships, each an elegant hotel with everything you could possibly want, and more than you expect. There really is no more comfortable or stylish way to explore the world. Viking Longships Sailing the rivers of Europe, the Viking Longships blend contemporary Scandinavian style and classic comfort. Filled with natural light, they are designed to bring the outside in, with panoramic windows and plenty of outside space where you can dine alfresco, relax and watch the world go by. Quiet corners invite you to pause and reflect; in the alcoves, the library, the lounge areas, the Sun Deck, the Aquavit Terrace and, of course, your stateroom. Home to just 190 guests, all the staterooms have a window and, thanks to the ship s innovative design, many boast a French balcony or private veranda. You can see detailed plans of the Viking Longships on pages and tour the ships online at vikingcruises.co.uk Douro ships There is no more perfect way to travel through the timeless landscapes of northern Portugal s pristine valleys and vine-clad slopes than on Viking Hemming, Viking Torgil or Viking Osfrid. Taking inspiration from the Viking Longships, these ships are especially designed to sail the River Douro and are slightly smaller. Built in 2014 and 2016, they accommodate just 106 guests yet offer many of the same design features, including the Aquavit Terrace. They also boast a small rooftop pool to make the most of the sunnier climes. Take a closer look at our Douro ships on pages

19 Elbe ships Inspired by our Viking Longships, Viking Beyla and Viking Astrild were built in 2015, and are as elegant as the river on which they sail. Home to 98 guests, they have fewer staterooms than the Viking Longships, yet the same inviting features and amenities, including the Aquavit Terrace for alfresco dining. For a full deck plan and more information, turn to page 118. Russia ships Home to just 204 guests, Viking Akun, Viking Ingvar and Viking Truvor offer plenty of space, including a Sun Deck on which you relax and marvel at the passing scenery. The lounge and bars boast panoramic windows. Likewise, the spacious river-view staterooms and sites offer all the comforts and amenities you would expect, many also feature a private veranda. Take alook at the detail ship plans on page 119. China ship A jewel of a ship, Viking Emerald is home to 256 guests and is larger than our European ships, so that it can navigate the locks and dams of the Yangtze. There are many welcoming spaces on board, including a Sun Deck, choice of lounge areas and bars, a library and inviting restaurant. You ll also find an on board boutique, tailor, hairdresser and internet café. Best of all, every stateroom has a veranda on which you can relax and admire the spectacular scenery. See the detailed ship plans on page 120. Mekong ship Featuring handcrafted teak and brass, every aspect of this elegant, colonial-style ship is designed for your comfort and pleasure. Sailing the Mekong, this smaller ship accommodates up to just 60 guests, yet provides ample space including a deck with shaded sitting area in which to relax. Enjoy a river-view stateroom with air conditioning and private bathroom with shower, as well as a welcoming restaurant, small library and on board shop. 22 Taste the world The hint-of-the-sea flavour of sardines in a Portuguese fishing village. The rich aroma of dark chocolate in an elegant Viennese cafe. The reassuring pop of a cork from an aged bottle of Beaujolais in Southern France. A Viking journey is all about discovery, and that includes the discovery of wonderful new foods and wines. On every journey you ll be treated to inspiring dishes that capture the essence of the season and the countries through which you re travelling. You can also visit places where local foods and wines are made, and meet the people who produce them. Wander through a food market with one of our expert chefs and pick up valuable shopping and cooking tips. Try your hand at preparing new and exciting dishes. Sample different regional wines and beers. If ever there is a time to let the food do the talking, it s when you re travelling. And when you travel with Viking, you can look forward to a culinary journey that positively sings. 22

23 Meet the producers There is something immensely satisfying about eating food and drinking wine in the place where it is grown or made, and on every Viking journey you can choose from an exciting menu of included excursions and optional visits where food and drink takes centre stage. Whether it s a farmers market in France, a centuries-old village bakery in Portugal, or tasting traditionally brewed beers in Germany, there is nothing like mingling with the locals to enjoy a truly authentic flavour of your destination, and a complete sensory experience. Let s cook We believe that cooking should be a spirited affair, an adventure meant to be shared. Go shopping with your chef to pick up fresh produce and helpful tips. Or join the laughter as you prepare a regional dish, and savour every moment. Treat your taste buds It s not just fabulous meals you ll remember, but also the daily treats you weren t expecting. Homemade ice-cream when you return on board in Bordeaux (pistachio or strawberry?). A slice of warm German apple cake as you sail through the Wachau Valley. A Kir Royale aperitif in St. Petersburg. Every day, delicious. See your travel agent or call us on

24 Welcome to our table Breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can look forward to a selection of dishes cooked to perfection. Food that is a pleasure to serve, and a joy to eat. Authenticity is everything. Regional food that pays homage to its origins. Specially selected wines. And a setting where you feel both comfortable and spoilt. All the ingredients for a remarkable meal. Good taste extends naturally to your surroundings. Stylish, warm and welcoming, the restaurant is a wonderful, light-filled space, with natural woods and handcrafted textiles, and of course panoramic windows to make the most of those precious views. With the emphasis on relaxation, there is nothing formal about our restaurants, or our dress code. Smart casual works for us and, more importantly, for you. Wear what you love. Sit where you want. Eat what you like. It s all about choice. Cheers! The best food calls for the best wines, and Viking s generosity of spirit extends naturally into our restaurants, with complimentary wines served with lunch and dinner. A beautiful Bordeaux. Perfect Pinot Grigio. Magnificent Merlot. Vintage Viking. Open seating, open air Because food never tastes as good as when it s eaten in the great outdoors, you can enjoy a lighter meal alfresco on the Aquavit Terrace on our Viking Longships, where you can drink in the sunshine, as well as the views. 24 For more information visit us at vikingcruises.co.uk

28 Night and day 28

29 When you re not ashore exploring, head out on to the Sun Deck and the great outdoors for 360 degree views and some of the best seats in the house. Learn more about the people and places you will encounter from an entertaining guest speaker. Whip up a local speciality with the chef, or join an artist for a fascinating lesson. When evening falls, enjoy a fabulous dinner in the restaurant with sparkling views over the water. In many places your ship is moored until late or overnight, so you can step ashore for an after-dinner drink and a stroll around town. Back on board, the bar and lounge come alive to the sounds of the resident pianist or singer. Catch up on the day s adventures with friends. Take the air, with a nightcap under the stars on deck. Or relax in the comfort of your stateroom with a great movie. Night and day, it is simply perfect. 29

30 River Douro Originating in the rugged wilderness of western Spain, the River Douro weaves its way through northern Portugal to the historic city of Porto, and the Atlantic Ocean. Carved into the mountains along its route are steep terraced hillsides blanketed by vineyards, with whitewashed quintas perched above. Grapes have been grown here for more than 2,000 years and in 2001, UNESCO declared the entire Alto Douro wine-growing region a World Heritage Site. The Portuguese Rio Douro loosely translates as River of Gold, and when you see the sun setting on the water, it does indeed gleam like a bar of gold through the dramatic landscape. 30

31 MUST-SEES Lisbon s Old Quarter Take one of the city s yellow trams to the Bairro Alto to discover a labyrinth of alleyways and cosy haunts hosting live fado music, traditional restaurants and inviting tapas and wine bars. Coimbra University Inspiration for J.K. Rowling s Hogwarts, UNESCO-listed Coimbra boasts a magnificent 18th-century Baroque library, with some of the world s oldest and rarest books. Azulejos There are countless examples of Portugal s beautiful azulejos hand-painted tiles. Look out for them everywhere, and in every decorative style imaginable. Salamanca The magical Spanish city of Salamanca glows with Renaissance architecture of golden sandstone. Its 18th-century Plaza Mayor is considered the most beautiful square in Spain. Pull up a chair at an inviting café, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Fado Born along the waterfront in the early 1800s, the mournful melancholy songs of fado speak of life, struggle and passion. It is said that fado is a window into the soul of the Portuguese people. Enjoy the opportunity to listen to this moving music. Quinta da Avessada Producing robust reds, light whites and a seemingly endless variety of ports, the Douro wine estates are a huge draw, and there are few more picturesque than Quinta da Avessada. Raise a glass of Moscatel as you drink in the views. 31

Whatever its name, the River Elbe has shaped some of the region s most dramatic and breathtaking scenery. The Elbe is one of Europe s few rivers that still follows its natural course. From the Giant Mountains of the Czech Republic to the soaring rock formations in Germany s Saxon Switzerland, the river flows serenely to the North Sea through some of Europe s most glorious cities and towns. Hilltop castles, exuberant palaces, cobbled market squares and grand cathedrals all add to the storybook atmosphere. A journey along its waters will transport you to another age. 38

Saxon Switzerland Named by two homesick 18th-century Swiss painters who were reminded of the beauty of their homeland by the stunning views, Saxon Switzerland is Germany s most spectacular national park. Lesser Three Gorges Narrower than the Three Gorges, the sheer cliffs and steep mountains feature a number of historical sites, including the hanging coffins of the Ba people, and the ancient plank road carved into the cliff side. Cameras at the ready. The Forbidden City As the name implies, it was once forbidden to enter this complex of imperial palaces, pavilions and courtyards. The Hutongs In the heart of old Beijing (formerly Peking) are narrow streets and alleys hutongs where houses are built around traditional courtyards. This is grassroots Beijing, the other end of the scale to imperial court life, but equally fascinating. The Great Wall He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man said Mao Zedong. Some of the most picturesque sections wind their way across the peaks and hilltops of the Badaling Hills near Beijing, and are easily accessible to man and woman. Dynasty, the show Xian was China s capital for 12 imperial dynasties, including the prosperous Tang Dynasty. In this historic city, enjoy an optional performance of ancient music and dance that brings to life the glorious culture this period. 93
