SCALE 1/20 Army Transport MAPLE LEAF This sidewheel steamer was built in 181 for the Lake Ontario trade of freight, passengers and livestock. From 1862 it was chartered by the U. S. Army Quartermaster Department until it hit a torpedoe (as mines were called) in 186, when part of an ill fated operation in Florida, not far from Jacksonville. The Maple Leaf sank and buried in its holds the baggage of three regiments. Rediscovered i our time, the wreck proved to be the greatest treasure of Civil War material culture, including personal belongings, tents, suttlers goods and dinnerware looted on local plantations. A year earlier, the ship caught some attention when a group of Confederate prisoners rose up against Captain Dale during a transportation from New Orleans to the north. Jumping in the ship s boats they made it to the Virginia shore and got on the train to Richmond. Captain Dale, an able commander ran a commercial ship, charging hotel prices from the personell transported.

The ship was 17 feet long, 2 feet wide. The heavy machinery and paddles midship called for the the wide arches running over the decks. Called "hogging trusses" they distributed the wheight and made the hull less prone to "hogg" - which means to sagg. Cargo was loaded for and aft on the main deck. On the passenger deck was a large saloon and cabins for passengers. Three ship s boats were carried on the hurricane deck. On top of this the A-frame was visible, part of the machinery of the ship. 3 HOW TO BUILD THIS PAPER MODEL C The tools needed for papermodeling are: a scissor for cutting, a scalpel for small details, a ruler and a nail are handy when scoring the pieces that are to be folded. A tweezer is welcome when handling small pieces. A non-water waterbased glue is preferable when fixing the the spine and formers - that will keep the from warping. Later use white glue which leaves no spots. All cylindric parts - masts or funnels - should be rolled soft to get their shape. Walking beam with A-frame 8e 8f 8d 7a 8a-b 8c 7b Assembly of the paddle wheel 28a 28b Start with assembling the frame of the hull, glueing the stem 2 to the base make up the formers of the sides, fix them carefully in place. Next step is to let the formers of the main deck, 11-12, slide into place. 1 makes the open main deck aft, it needs some rounding toward the sides. Fold up the shaded part and add the sides 1c and d. On top of the main deck comes the saloon deck, 1 and 21. The shape of 21 must follow 1, below. The lower end of the hogging trusses 1 should the be glued in place. Ships side port and starboard comes next, are carefully cut out after first scoring for easy folding of the supports are the parts covering the sides of main deck fore. Align carefully and check the rounded part that makes up the side of the paddle box. 2-2 is the saloon, glue front and back are to be rolled to form the cover of the paddlebox, adjust with the previously fixed parts, inside and outside. Next are 2c and 2c that rest on the front of the rounded paddlebox. The whole of the ship s gallery 27a is now cut out, so remove all the empty space you care. Preform the piece for good fit and glue in place. A stable construction will result if you put in the supports 27b, scored and folded. Cut out the hurricane deck 2, remove the pink parts and make cuts where marked (making a rounded deck possible). Mount the hogging trusses after doubling. Finally move to the A-frame with its moving part, the walking beam and mount the pieces after careful study of the drawings. The rest of the process will present few problems. Build as many of the figures as you like, or none at all!
