2 THE ITINERARY Day 1 Australia - Havana, Cuba (via Canada) Today depart from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane for your flight to Havana, Cuba. Fly with Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. (Please note: if flying ex Melbourne, a Qantas flight will be arranged to meet your flight in either Sydney or Brisbane). Upon arrival you will be transferred to the hotel. Overnight: Hotel Memories Miramar or similar, Havana Meals included: In-Flight Day 2 Havana - Vinales Valley Tour (approx. 180km day) Today, leave Havana to depart for the UNESCO listed Vinales Valley, three hours drive west of Havana. In 1999 Vinales Valley was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and a tour through this beautifully verdant area, with its traditional country life, will show you why. Its unique landscape is dotted with gigantic karst formations towering over majestic palms and a valley of rich red earth. The area is one of Cuba s most fertile, ideal for growing the world s best tobacco, as well as harvesting, drying and processing to make the world famous cigars. The tobacco plant reaches its full height between November and February and once the harvest is over, other crops are planted such as malanga, a fleshy-leafed South American plant; yucca, a plant of the agave family; and corn. A visit to the Casa del Veguero (tobacco farmer s house) is included in the tour, and will provide a full explanation on the subject. Also included is a short boat ride through a limestone cave. Afterwards check-in to the hotel, where you will enjoy dinner this evening. It was founded in the early 19th century later than other main cities in Cuba by French immigrants from France and Louisiana (USA). This gives the city a different atmosphere and architectural appearance. In 2005, Cienfuegos historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Terry Theatre the National Monument (entrance included), located in the historic urban centre and the architectural jewel of Palacio Valle (entrance included) reminiscent of Spanish-Moorish art with influences of Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Mudejar arts. Afterwards proceed to Trinidad and check-in to the hotel, where you will enjoy dinner this evening. Overnight: Hostal Lola or similar, Trinidad Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner Day 4 Trinidad Half Day City Tour This morning enjoy a guided tour of Trinidad (approx. 4 hours), nestled between the Escambray Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. Founded in 1514 by conquistador Velázquez, Trinidad with its colonial baroque architecture and quaint, pastelcoloured houses with red tiled roofs feels like it s cast in amber. Among the handful of museums in Trinidad, Museo de Arquitectura stands out (entrance included). It overlooks the town s main square, the Plaza Mayor and features an excellent exhibition of upper-class domestic architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Probably one of the most photographed towers of Trinidad is the former 18th-century Convento de San Francisco (entrance not included). During the tour enjoy a typical Cuban cocktail in the Canchanchara bar (cocktail included), one of the oldest buildings in Trinidad, combined with architectural styles from the 18th and 20th centuries. Sugar Mill Valley is on the outskirts of Trinidad and is where much of the region s wealth derived from in the 16th century. Enjoy great views from the Manaca Iznaga Tower. 3 THE ITINERARY Day 5 Trinidad - Cayo Santa Maria Half Day Island Tour (approx. 200km day) Enjoy the cool air and spectacular scenery of the Sierra del Escambray. The first stop is 800m above sea level, where there will be an explanation about the area and its remarkable history and ecotourism. The nearby Casa del Café serves delicious coffee - after all the area is famous for its excellent coffee production. This will be followed by a gentle walk along the Melodious River, which boasts many natural pools and a waterfall where you can swim. The walk finishes at La Casa de la Gallega, a former farm and now a country restaurant, surrounded by a beautiful garden, where you will enjoy a homemade lunch. In the afternoon, continue the drive to the north of the island. Cross through the sea by a 42km road built with bridges and causeways till you reach Cayo Santa Maria Island. Check-in to the all inclusive hotel, giving you the chance to enjoy a variety of water sports and the wonderful warm waters of the Caribbean. Overnight: Starfish Resort or similar, Cayo Santa Maria Day 6 Cayo Santa Maria Island Free Day Today enjoy a free day at leisure in Cayo Santa Maria - a small island off Cuba s northern coast. It s known for its beaches and water sports. Gaviotas Beach, in the northeast, is backed by lush vegetation. Perhaps enjoy the traditional market, restaurants and bars. Overnight: Starfish Resort or similar, Cayo Santa Maria Day 7 Cayo Santa Maria - Santa Clara, Cuba (approx. 100km day) Today you will check out at noon and then enjoy lunch at the resort. Afterwards you will drive to Santa Clara. On the way visit the village of Remedios, before continuing on to Santa Clara. The city was founded on July 15, 1689 among the original settlers were several families from Remedios who fled from the pirate attacks besieging the town at the time. Centuries later, as 1958 drew to a close, Santa Clara was the site of the final battle in the Cuban Revolution. The guerrilla attacks were led by Ernesto Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos who derailed a train full of troops and supplies sent by Batista. Santa Clara was captured on December 31, This victory is considered the decisive moment in the Cuban Revolution. Erected twenty years after his untimely death, the Monument Ernesto Che Guevara is the city s main tourist attraction and a pilgrimage site for many. The awe-inspiring mausoleum houses the remains of Che Guevara and sixteen of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 in Bolivia (free entry). The average temperature during the day throughout the year is between 25 and 35 C. Almost always a breeze blows from the North-East which offers some relief. Temperatures are only moderately higher during the summer, with the warmest month being August. The Caribbean Islands are located in the same area with a similar tropical climate. TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER Tour Guide: Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group. Tour Leader: An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.
