2 THE ITINERARY Day 1 Australia - Havana, Cuba (via Canada) Depart Australia for your flight to Havana, Cuba with Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge from either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Arrival is on the same day at Havana airport. (Please note if flying ex Melbourne, a Qantas flight will be arranged to meet your flight in either Sydney or Brisbane). Upon arrival a transfer will be arranged to transport you to your hotel to relax for the evening in this beautiful Cuban capital. In 1999 Vinales Valley was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site - a tour through this beautifully verdant area with its traditional country life shows you why. Its unique landscape is dotted with gigantic karst formations towering over a valley of rich red earth and majestic palms. The area is one of Cuba s most fertile, ideal for growing the world s best tobacco, as well as harvesting, drying and processing to make the world famous cigars. The tobacco plant reaches its full height between November and February and once the harvest is over, other crops are planted such as malanga, a fleshy-leafed South American plant; yucca, a plant of the agave family; and corn. A visit to the Casa del Veguero (tobacco farmer s house) is included in the tour which provides a full explanation on the subject. Also included is a short boat ride through a limestone cave. It was founded in the early 19th century later than other main cities in Cuba by French immigrants from France and Louisiana (USA). This gives the city a different atmosphere and architectural appearance. In 2005, Cienfuegos historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Terry Theatre the National Monument (entrance included), located in the historic urban centre and the architectural jewel of Palacio Valle (entrance included) reminiscent of Spanish-Moorish art with influences of Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Mudejar arts. Afterwards proceed to Trinidad and check in to your Hotel. Dinner at the Hotel. Founded in 1514 by conquistador Velázquez, Trinidad with its colonial baroque architecture and quaint, pastel-coloured houses with red tiled roofs feels like it s cast in amber. Among the handful of museums in Trinidad, Museo de Arquitectura stands out (entrance included). It overlooks the town s main square, the Plaza Mayor and features an excellent exhibition of upper-class domestic architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Probably one of the most photographed towers of Trinidad is the former 18th-century Convento de San Francisco (entrance not included). During the tour enjoy a typical Cuban cocktail in the Canchanchara bar (cocktail included), one of the oldest buildings in Trinidad, combined with architectural styles from the 18th and 20th centuries. 3 THE ITINERARY Day 5 Trinidad - Cayo Santa Maria Half Day Island Tour (Approx. 200km Day) Enjoy the cool air and spectacular scenery of the Sierra del Escambray. The first stop is 800 metres above sea level, where there will be an explanation about the area and its remarkable history and ecotourism. The nearby Casa del Café serves delicious coffee - after all the area is famous for its excellent coffee production. This will be followed by a gentle walk along the Melodious River, which boasts many natural pools and a waterfall where you can swim. The walk finishes at La Casa de la Gallega, a former farm and now a country restaurant, surrounded by a beautiful garden, where you will enjoy a homemade lunch. In the afternoon, continue the drive to the north of the island. Cross through the sea by a 42km road built with bridges and causeways till we reach Cayo Santa Maria Island. Check in to your all inclusive hotel, giving you the chance to enjoy a variety of water sports and the wonderful warm waters of the Caribbean. This afternoon you will drive to Santa Clara. On the way visit the village of Remedios, before continuing on to Santa Clara. The city was founded on July 15, 1689 among the original settlers were several families from Remedios who fled from the pirate attacks besieging the town at the time. Centuries later, as 1958 drew to a close, Santa Clara was the site of the final battle in the Cuban Revolution. The guerrilla attacks were led by Ernesto Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos who derailed a train full of troops and supplies sent by Batista. Santa Clara was captured on December 31, This victory is considered the decisive moment in the Cuban Revolution. Erected twenty years after his untimely death, the Monument Ernesto Che Guevara is the city s main tourist attraction and a pilgrimage site for many. The aweinspiring mausoleum houses the remains of Che Guevara and sixteen of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 in Bolivia (free entry). CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURE Cuba and Caribbean Islands Cuba has a tropical climate. The average temperature during the day throughout the year in Cuba is between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. There almost always blows a breeze from the North-East. This gives you some cooling of the hot weather. Temperatures are only moderately higher during the summer, with the warmest month being August. The benefit is that summer visitors enjoy less crowds. Same for the Caribbean Islands located in the same area with a tropical climate. TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER Tour Guide: Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group. Tour Leader: An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history.
