Seabrook was then known as Jones Island, and indigo and rice were quickly established as its first cash crops. In 1753, the island was renamed Simmons Island by its new owner, Ebenezer Simmons, whose grandson cultivated the island s next great source of revenue, cotton. Finally, in 1816, its new owner William Seabrook christened the island with the name that it remains to this day.
