After checking in at your hotel, a complimentary city tour is available. This can be a half day or full day tour depending on your flight arrival time and how you feel after your long flight. Depending on the time of day and day of the week, the city tour may include a familiarisation drive around the city, the national museum and art gallery, the parliament house (pictured left), the botanical gardens, the PNG Art artifacts showroom, the university bookshop (best for postcards and rare books about PNG). Overnight 3 star accommodation, Port Moresby (eg Ponderosa Family Hotel, Hideaway Hotel, Shady Rest Hotel or Hotel Hodava) includes all meals (buffet or set-menu) DAY 2: PORT MORESBY / MT HAGEN 09:30 Depart on the first morning flight to Mt Hagen (Fokker F100 aircraft) 10:30 On arrival in Mt Hagen, explore Mt Hagen town and surrounds by private bus en route to through the scenic Nebilyer Valley to Magic Mountain Nature Lodge. Check in and explore the magical orchid gardens and moss forest around your bungalow. Later, walk 30 minutes down hill to nearby Paiya village, a typical dispersed village where the homes are scattered across a wide area with the nearest neighbours 200 metres from each other. In this type of village each family s gardens are planted around their own house. Villagers here normally gather for meetings and ceremonies at the sing-sing ground where there is also the ancestors skull house, the men s culture house and the chief s home. The chief himself will meet you with his three wives in tow, and you will be able to see demonstrations of wig-making and the local courtship ritual. Cultural dance groups will give you a taste of a highlands sing-sing performance and a traditional style lunch will be served: meat and vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and roasted in a shallow pit under a pile of red-hot rocks. Mid afternoon, local guides will lead you on a foray into the biodiverse moss forest around Magic Mountain which has a wide variety of mosses, lichens, worts, funghi, ferns and wild orchids. Native birds including birds of paradise are active in the late afternoons and can be viewed and photographed if not disturbed by human noise. Birds in this area are understandably nervous as they are hunted by locals for their feathers! Overnight Magic Mountain Nature Lodge comfortable 2.5 star bungalow, includes set-menu local style meals)

DAY 3: MT HAGEN / WEWAK Depart Magic Mountain after breakfast and spend the morning sightseeing around Mt Hagen with a stop at the city market (the largest in PNG), a drive through coffee and tea plantations and market gardens of the Waghi Valley, and a visit to Moikap village. Moikap is a typical cluster village just a short drive from town where you will be able to visit locals inside their houses, see their vegetable gardens and native flora planted around the village. In cluster villages the houses are closely bunched together and communal garden areas are farmed outside the village. After a lunch stop at the Highlander Hotel (included), check in at Mt Hagen airport for your Airlines PNG flight to Wewak (Dash 8 aircraft). On arrival in Wewak you will be met by the hotel shuttle bus and transfer 15 minutes to the hotel. Overnight In-Wewak Boutique Hotel (3.75 star twin share) includes all meals (buffet or set-menu food only) NB If there is no afternoon flight to Wewak today and it is necessary to fly in the morning, alternative sightseeing around Wewak town will be arranged for the afternoon. DAY 4: WEWAK / SEPIK RIVER 08:00 After breakfast, check out of the hotel and meet up at reception with our local Wewak guide who will drive you by private four wheel drive vehicle to Pagwi, your jumping-off point on the Sepik River. The road from Wewak to Pagwi is tar sealed most of the way and quite a pleasant journey. First you climb steep winding curves from the steamy coastal strip to the cool forests of the undulating Prince Alexander Range. Two hours into the trip you can stop at a roadside market to buy tropical fruits, cooked vegetables and delicious green coconuts to drink (pay as you go). Descending onto the savannah grasslands of the Sepik Basin, you pass through a number of villages before arriving at Pagwi station on the Middle Sepik by midday. At Pagwi your Wewak guide will pass you over to the care of your Sepik River guide and you will board you waiting motor canoe and head down-river approximately one hour to Korogo, the first of the Middle Sepik crocodile cult villages. At Korogo you will be welcomed by a traditional sing-sing dance then your guide will settle you into the village guest house and take you on a familiarisation walk around the village, stopping at the Haus Tambaran (men s spirit house) where the curator will show you the tambu artifacts and explain the traditions of the crocodile cult. You will also pay a visit to the Korogo village carvers who are famous for their fine art. Wood artists from Korogo have travelled overseas on carver exchange programs. Behind the village is a large oxbow lake where the locals go for fishing and crocodile hunting. Fish and sago are the staple foods along the Sepik River and you will witness demonstrations of both fishing and harvest sago here at Korogo. Overnight village guest house, Korogo or Pagwi (includes local style meals and bottled water). NB Accommodation will be twin-share or single in the village guest house.

Tropical sleeping bags, rubber mattresses and mosquito nets are supplied. We strongly suggest you bring a battery-operated personal fan to cool yourself when sleeping under your mosquito net. DAY 5: SEPIK RIVER / WEWAK This morning you will continue motoring a further 30 minutes downstream to other crocodile cult villages such as Palembei or Kanganaman to walk through the villages and visit the spirit houses then begin your journey back to Wewak. It will take about 90 minutes to motor upstream to Pagwi then about 4 hours road trip back to Wewak, arriving at the hotel in time for late dinner. Alternatively, depart Korogo early in the morning for a two hour hike inland to beautiful YAMOK, a village with seven spirit houses (one for each village clan) which is more than any any other village on the Sepik. Spend two hours at Yamok and walk back to Korogo then canoe and road trip back to Wewak OR fly out of Yamok airstrip direct to Wewak (20 minutes) at extra cost). Yamok is the only village along this stretch of the Sepik River with an airstrip. Overnight In-Wewak Boutique Hotel (3.75 star twin share) includes all meals (buffet or set-menu food only) DAY 6: WEWAK / KAIRIRU ISLAND / WEWAK 07:00 After breakfast walk 15 minutes down Wewak Hill to the beach in front of the post office to board your open speed boat for a 45 minute boat ride to Kairiru Island. Kairiru Is a volcanic island with mountainous interior and crater lake. Stopping at the hot springs at Victoria Bay en route you will be able to enjoy a rejuvenating swim in the bay where cool sea waters mix with hot spring water that gurgles out of rocks on the beach and drains into the bay. On arrival mid morning at Shagur village on the north side of the island facing the Bismarck Sea, the people await you with an enthusiastic traditional welcome, a walking tour of the village and a seafood feast for lunch. After lunch, guides will lead the group on a one hour rainforest walk to the waterfall for a refreshing splash, followed by a cultural entertainment program with all manner of traditional singing, dancing and drama skits portraying the island legends be prepared for some great slapstick comedy even if you can t understand a word of what s going on. 16:00 Depart Kairiru Island for Wewak, alighting on post office beach where your shuttle bus will be waiting to transfer you up to the hotel in time for a sundowner drink on the verandah overlooking the island that you have just visited. Overnight In-Wewak Boutique Hotel (3.75 star twin share) includes all meals (buffet or set-menu food only)

DAY 7: WEWAK / PORT MORESBY 03:30 Rise and have breakfast in your room. The hotel restaurant is not open at this time so a boxed breakfast will be delivered to your room the night before. 04:15 The hotel shuttle bus departs for Wewak airport. Passenger check-in usually opens at 05:00. The aircraft has overnighted at Wewak and the pilots have probably stayed at the same hotel as yourself, and will probably travel to the airport on the same shuttle, so don t worry you won t miss the flight. 06:10 Air Niugini flight PX125 departs Wewak for Port Moresby via Madang (aircraft: Fokker F100 with 98 seats) 08:20 On arrival in Port Moresby, Ecotourism Melanesia staff will meet you and assist you with your onward arrangements to fly home or extend to another destination in PNG. A boxed lunch Is provided for transit at the airport. OPTIONAL EXTENSIONS Simbai Trobriand Islands Tufi We offer these extension destinations because: - they feature distinctive, exotic and contrasting cultural landscapes - the cultural photography available is exceptional - these areas are safe and we have good relationships with the locals - the travel logistics are relatively straightforward NB We do not offer Tari and the Huli tribe as a destination for this group program because public safety has deteriorated in the Tari and Ambua Gap area since the commencement of extraction of natural gas in the Hela province region which has sparked local landowner disputes and law and order problems. There are no scheduled flights between Mt Hagen and Tari the only air access is via private flights operated by Ambua Lodge and we consider road travel into this region unsafe. On request, we can include Huli wigmen and Asaro mudmen dancers in the sing-sing program at Paiya village near Mt Hagen, as there are many settlers from Tari and Goroka living around Mt Hagen.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION TO SIMBAI 2 NIGHTS Why extend to Simbai? Simbai is an isolated district in the highlands, halfway between Mt Hagen and Madang. Simbai is one of the most exotic cultural destinations in PNG but is visited by very few outsiders (less than 100 tourists per year) as compared to the better known Huli tribe at Tari which receives thousands of visitors every year. There are no roads in and out of the Simbai district and the people of the Kalam tribe who live there maintain a very primitive hunter-gatherer lifestyle hardly influenced by westernisation. Unique initiation rituals and colourful traditional dress featuring huge head dresses and long nose pieces make Simbai a stand-out winner for cultural photography. Archaeological digs in this area indicate that the Kalam people have occupied the Simbai area continuously for more than a thousand years. The dialect spoken by the people here is one of PNG s most unusual languages, characterised by glottal stops. The traditional culture here is also unique among Papua New Guinea s eight hundred tribes. Native houses have a trademark irregular hexagon shape, men s initiation ceremonies feature nose-piercing and pig-killing, and on special occasions the initiated men wear huge cane-framed head dresses the largest in Papua New Guinea decorated with animal skins and the exoskeletons of thousands of luminescent green beetles collected from the forest. Just an hour s walk from the airstrip brings you to primitive villages where time has stood still and the local people still live in grass huts, still wear traditional dress and still hunt game and harvest fruit and vegetables from the forest for their diet. Very few outsiders visit Simbai because chartering a light aircraft is necessary to get in and out, which is only economical for groups. INCLUSIONS FOR SIMBAI EXTENSION 2 NIGHTS: Mt Hagen airport transfers Mt Hagen light aircraft flight to Simbai and return Simbai 2 nights basic village guest house accommodation (twin share, includes local style meals, bottled water) Simbai tribal sing-sing and photography Simbai orientation tour, tribal museum, orchid gardens Simbai full day village experience and photography DAY A: MT HAGEN / SIMBAI (sing-sing cultural familiarisation) Departing Magic Mountain after breakfast, transfer to Mt Hagen airport for your 30 minute charter flight to remote Simbai. On arrival at Simbai airstrip your group will be met by our local Simbai guide with a few extra hands to help carry your bags. From the airstrip it is a 45 minute walk to the Kalam Guest House, your home for the next two nights. Kalam Guest House is a rustic but clean and comfortable facility built in local style, operated by the local community. The guest house has ten twin rooms with clean bedding supplied. The bathroom, which has running water and a flush toilet, is shared but it is unlikely that there will be any other guests staying apart from your tour party. Electricity is supplied by a small generator. Well prepared local style meals are served based on fresh local produce. In front of the guest house is a large open area that the locals use as a meeting place and sing-sing ground. On arrival at the guest house you will be welcomed by a traditional Kalam tribal sing-sing procession with men wearing their trademark head-dresses decorated with green beetle shells and women wearing animal furs and orchid stem

necklaces. As they dance and sing they beat small hand drums ( kundu drums) fashioned from small hollowed logs with a lizard or mammal skin stretched over one end creating a tympanic membrane. After the sing-sing you will be able to meet the performers and examine their costumes and body decorations, describe how they are made and applied, and talk about their ritual significance. Photography is welcome and there is no charge. 13:00 Lunch is served at the guest house and will include local fruit and vegetables including sub-tropical varieties of banana, yam and sweet potato. Starchy vegetables are usually served with cooked greens such as watercress and long beans, or salad vegetables like tomato and cucumber. In the afternoon your guide will take you exploring in the vicinity of the Kalam Guest House. Adjacent is the Kalam Tribal Museum which is a local style hut housing a collection of tribal artifacts, some of which are quite old and rare, and represent a microcosm of the Kalam tribal history and culture. Your guide will explain the historical and ritual significance of the pieces on display which include everyday utensils, weapons, musical instruments, head dresses, nose pieces, traditional clothing, shell money for making bride price payments, and heirloom ornaments. Also nearby are the Simbai orchid gardens, lovingly tended by community volunteers, displaying a full range of wild and cultivated orchids which grow prolifically in the Simbai climate. Orchids play an important part in the lives and rituals of the Kalam people, not so much for their floral beauty (the flowers are exquisite but each plant may only bloom every two or three years) but the usefulness of their stems which when dried are hardy and hollow, useful as straws for sucking food and water, and for threading necklaces. Overnight Kalam Guest House, Simbai (basic twin room, includes local style meals) DAY B: SIMBAI (village experience) Today you will be able to fishbowl a Kalam family living in the hamlet of Wechenrau about one hour s walk from the Kalam Guest House. The family will be aware of your visit and will have a range of traditional activities prepared to show you including samples of typical foods that they eat and how they prepare them. They will take you to their nearby food gardens and show you what they have planted there, and show you some of the trees and shrubs in the nearby bush that they harvest roots, flowers, berries and pulp from for both cooking, medicinal and handiwork purposes. The women will actually walk you through the process of preparing one of their traditional staples for lunch which you will be able to sit down and share with them when cooked. The men will take you a little way into the bush and show you some of their methods for trapping birds, lizards and small mammals both for game meat and for their valued skins. The whole day will be one continuous magnificent photo opportunity as you fishbowl the daily lifestyle of this self-sufficient people living a stone-age lifestyle just a short flight and short walk from the modern towns of Madang and Mt Hagen.

Overnight Kalam Guest House, Simbai (basic twin room, includes meals) DAY C: SIMBAI / MT HAGEN After breakfast, walk to the airstrip and wait for today s light aircraft flight to Mt Hagen. A boxed lunch is provided during transit at Mt Hagen.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION TO TROBRIAND ISLANDS 2 NIGHTS Why extend to Trobriand Islands? This corner of PNG is totally unique and still very traditional. The islands are a long way from the mainland so westernisation has been very limited. Ecotourism Melanesia has negotiated an exclusive visitation arrangement with the people of Munuwata, a tiny island that most of us would call paradise, just a one hour motor boat ride from the main island (Kiriwina). Just a few times a year the Munuwata islanders welcome our groups of visitors for a complete cultural immersion experience, demonstrating their fascinating culture and subsistence lifestyle. The Munuwata community s social calendar is based on the cultivation cycle of the yam, a fibrous kind of potato that grows well in these islands. Yam is the staple food on the island, supplemented with seafood, coconuts and other tropical fruits. INCLUSIONS FOR TROBRIAND ISLANDS EXTENSION 2 NIGHTS Sunday to Tuesday OR Tuesday to Thursday Port Moresby scheduled flight to Losuia airfield, Trobriand Islands and return Trobriand Islands airport transfers Trobriand Islands 2 nights 2 star accommodation at Kiriwina Lodge, includes set-menu meals Trobriand Islands half day Kiriwina Island villages tour by road Trobriand Islands return motor boat transfers to Munuwata Island Trobriand Islands full day Munuwata Island cultural immersion experience including sing-sing program and photography ITINERARY FOR TROBRIAND ISLANDS EXTENSION 2 NIGHTS FIRST DAY: PORT MORESBY / LOSUIA 07:00 Ecotourism Melanesia staff will assist you to check in at Port Moresby airport domestic terminal. 09:15 Airlines PNG flight CG1644 departs Port Moresby for Losuia airport on Kiriwina, the largest of the Trobriand Islands (aircraft: Dash with 36 seats). 11:25 On arrival at Losuia airfield (the flight operates via Alotau) you will be met by our local guide and the shuttle bus from Kiriwina Lodge. The drive in to the township from the airfield is only a couple of kilometres but takes about 15 minutes because the road is bumpy and progress is slow. After checking in to your room at the lodge, lunch will be served. You can expect a seafood dish with local vegetables including yam of course. 14:00 After lunch a guide from the lodge will accompany your group on an exploratory tour of Kiriwina Island, famous for tall yam houses where each village s yam harvest is stored. Overnight Kiriwina Lodge (2 star accommodation in air-conditioned room with private bathroom, includes set-menu meals)

SECOND DAY: FULL DAY AT MUNUWATA ISLAND After breakfast (crab omelette is a specialty at Kiriwina Lodge), board an open speed boat for the one hour ride trip out to Munuwata Island. Fortunately Kiriwina Lodge is right on the water s edge and you won t have to go far to step into your boat. At Munuwata you will be welcomed by locals in canoes and on the beach and treated to a traditional welcome procession on the beach, and dancers will escort you up to the village. This is not just a tourist show as the islanders would normally offer such a colourful welcome to any special visitors from the other islands as well. At the village square, the community will then treat you to the best of their cultural repertoire including the tapoika dance (a hilarious sexually suggestive routine mimicking the pounding of sago with a pestle), the string dance and a number of children s dances. Yes the children will miss school today to be present for your arrival don t worry they will learn more from you and your visit than they would pick up in a day at school. During the traditional dancing you are welcome to get up close with your camera and take as many photographs as you like. After the performance the kids will run and play on the beach while you enjoy a selection of local food for your lunch including seafood and fruit. In the afternoon the Munuwata people will be keen to show you around their village, their gardens and their daily routine. You ll see how they build and repair houses with bush materials, how they grow and cook their own food, and how they catch fish with lines, nets and spears. A visit to Munuwata would not be complete without getting into (and falling out of) one of their native canoes so don t miss the opportunity to go out for a paddle. Later in the afternoon, depart Munuwata Island by motor boat for the return trip to Kiriwina Lodge. Overnight Kiriwina Lodge (2 star accommodation in air-conditioned room with private bathroom, includes set-menu meals) THIRD DAY: LOSUIA / PORT MORESBY 10:30 Check in at Losuia airfield. 11:50 Airlines PNG flight CG1645 departs Losuia for Port Moresby via Alotau (aircraft: Dash with 36 seats) 14:00 On arrival at Port Moresby airport, a boxed lunch is provided and Ecotourism Melanesia staff will assist you with your onward arrangements.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION TO TUFI 3 NIGHTS Why extend to Tufi? The Tufi district of Oro (Northern) Province is a quiet backwater mainly visited by scuba divers. There are no roads to Tufi and the only access is by air (3 flights a week) or infrequent passcargo boats from Lae. The Tufi landscape is dominstaed by some 25 Nordic-type fjords formed by fingers of lava flowing from an erupting Mt Victory thousands of years ago. The lava solidified as it flowed into the sea, thus forming the fjords. The fjords are characterised by steep cliffs and deep sheltered waters perfect for formation of high waterfalls, vibrant coral reefs and pristine rainforest frequented by native birds. Mt Victory and Mt Trafalgar loom in the background, their volcanic cones responsible for both the formation of the fjords and the scattering of metamorphic boulders for many kilometres around after they were spat out during violent eruptions in the distant past. The fjordland coastline features numerous white sandy beaches perfect for swimming, and pristine fringing reefs offer excellent snorkelling. The water clarity is stunning making scuba diving the main attraction for visitors to the area. However the lesser known secret of Tufi is the rich cultural heritage of the Tufi tribe. Colourful traditional dress is based on tapa cloth beaten from mulberry bark and painted with ochres in distinctive local designs. Exotic head dresses festooned with bird of paradise feathers are worn for sing-sings. The faces of married women are heavily tattooed, a custom that is unique in Papua New Guinea. Village houses are traditional style, built from bush materials especially folded sago palm leaves. Flights from Port Moresby to Tufi operate only on Monday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and Friday afternoons. The 3 nights extension price is the same for Wednesday to Saturday or Friday to Monday. INCLUSIONS FOR TUFI EXTENSION 3 NIGHTS Wednesday to Saturday Port Moresby scheduled flight to Tufi and return Tufi 1 night standard bungalow accommodation at Tufi Adventure Resort, includes meals Tufi half day Maclaren village traditional lifestyle tour Tufi return motor boat transfers to Kwafurina fjord Tufi half day Kwafurina village experience Tufi Kwafurina village tribal sing-sing and photography Tufi - 1 night basic village guest house accommodation (twin share, includes local style meals, bottled water) Tufi half day Kwafurina fjord exploratory canoe tour Port Moresby 1 night 3 star hotel (room only, pay extra for meals) INCLUSIONS FOR TUFI EXTENSION 3 NIGHTS Friday to Monday Port Moresby scheduled flight to Tufi and return Tufi 2 nights standard bungalow accommodation at Tufi Adventure Resort, includes meals Tufi half day Maclaren village traditional lifestyle tour Tufi return motor boat transfers to Kwafurina fjord Tufi half day Kwafurina village experience Tufi Kwafurina village tribal sing-sing and photography Tufi - 1 night basic village guest house accommodation (twin share, includes local style meals, bottled water) Tufi half day Kwafurina fjord exploratory canoe tour Tufi half day snorkelling or hiking at Tufi Adventure Resort
