1 HURRICANE MATTHEW Situation Report No.7 Date: 06 October 2016 (18:00 EST) This report is produced by PAHO/WHO in collaboration with PAHO Country Offices, Ministries of Health, and with inputs from official organizations. This report covers the period from October 2016 at 18:00 EST. HIGHLIGHTS Matthew is a Category 4 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 140mph (220 km/h) A Hurricane Warning is in effect for: Central and Northern Bahamas, and Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina; Matthew is supposed to affect these countries in the next 24 hours In Haiti, the most affected areas are Jérémie and Les Cayes In the United States: 4 states (Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) have declared a state of emergency Mandatory evacuations for an estimated 2 million people are in effect and there are 84 shelters with 3766 occupants across the four states SITUATION OVERVIEW On October 4, At 7:00am, Matthew made landfall near Les Anglais, Haiti (estimated pop. 27, 182) PAHO has deployed a total of 11 Regional Response Team Experts to 4 countries (see table below) Country PAHO Deployees Haiti Bahamas Jamaica Cuba WASH HEALTH COORD DANA LOG EMT COORD RESPONSE ACTIONS: HAITI Approx. 122 persons dead; more than 152,000 people in 204 shelters; an estimated 220 persons are injured, preliminary evaluations are ongoing, however, access to other areas remain difficult Over 29,000 houses and public infrastructure are destroyed or severely damaged The majority of port infrastructures in the Sud Department are damaged 1

2 Collapse of Petit Goave Bridge has isolated communities in South, Nippes and Grande Anse. No telephone communication either. Technicians from DINEPA Tepac are evaluating the water quality Other NGOs (MDM Argentina, Red Cross Haiti, ACF, and ADEMA are evaluating the situation in Nord Ouest, Sud Est, and Centre departments PAHO/WHO: 4 PAHO-HTI field teams are on the ground as well as a Rapid Response Emergency Unit, in addition 2 more teams will have a presence in Jérémie and Les Cayes 3 PAHO experts deployed to complement nearly 50 PAHO-HTI team members supporting hurricane operations PAHO has delivered essential medicines and supplies to several departments St. Boniface Hospital (Fond des Blancs) is fully functional Haiti Air Ambulance will travel to Les Cayes tomorrow to transfer patients PAHO RRT preliminary assessment revealed in 4 Haitian departments that of 7 hospitals: 3 are intact 2 have severe damage or flooded 1 is incommunicable 2

3 BAHAMAS/TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS PAHO/WHO: PAHO-BHS are providing support for NEOC operations Several shelters and health facilities have reported structural damage and have relocated occupants 3 persons affected; 730 persons in shelters There are reports of structural damage to the Meteorology Department at the Old Airport, the Fire Department, and the Sir Lindon Pindling Airport The MoH has reported leaks and roof damage and Health EOC has been relocated All PAHO and UN staff in Nassau has been under periodic monitoring from PAHO-BHS EOC. All 17 persons have reported safe today around noon, including PAHO-BHS staff, PAHO-PHE staff, one staff from UNNP and one from UNHCR.
