1 Sea~Ha Runner A fun and informative Newsletter for the Residents of the Kilkich Tribal Community KRA s Annual Community Garage Sale will be held Friday, August 20 th and Saturday, August 21 st. All residents in the community are welcome to participate with their own yard sale. The sale will be advertised in the local newspapers and media, so expect shoppers from local surrounding areas to visit the neighborhood on those days. The garage sale also coincides with the Charleston Seafood Festival this year, so hopefully people going to and coming from the festival will stop in and check out the sale. This is an excellent time to clean out your garage and attic, sell those unwanted or unused items, and earn a few extra dollars. The sale will be begin at 9:00 a.m. each day, rain or shine. If you have any questions, please contact Rocky Doyle at If you have any clean, gently-used items that did not sell in your garage sale, or any items that you no longer have a need for and would like to donate to a wonderful cause, South Coast Hospice will be on Tribal Lands on Monday, August 23 rd around 9:30 a.m. to collect donations. Please place your donations at the edge of your driveway; South Coast Hospice will stop and pick the items up. South Coast Hospice will not pick up any items that cannot be resold in their store, for example, broken, dirty, or damaged items. All items NOT PICKED UP by South Coast Hospice remain the responsibility and property of the donating party. South Coast Hospice also accepts cars, trucks, campers, and boats if they are in working condition. Benefit yourself and others by donating a vehicle that you are no longer using, while turning it into a tax deductible donation at the same time! If you have any questions or wonder whether South Coast Hospice will accept an item, please give them a call at or South Coast Hospice

2 Page 2 Sea~Ha Runner There have been numerous, ongoing complaints regarding animal waste not being cleaned up, not only in the playground area, but around Tribal Lands in general. As an animal owner, you are responsible for cleaning up after your animal each and every time it makes a mess. Animal feces contain harmful bacteria and disease causing organisms such as E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Salmonella. Leaving animal waste on the ground, especially in public areas like playgrounds, walking areas, and roadways, may pose a disease risk to children, adults, and other animals. Please protect yourself and others in your community by always cleaning up after your animal. Here are some suggestions for handling your animal s waste: 1. Always carry a plastic bag when you walk your dog. A newspaper delivery bag or a grocery bag both work well. 2. Use the bag as a glove to pick up the animal waste. Turn the bag inside out around the waste, scoop it up, seal the bag, and dispose of it in a trash can. 3. Don t compost animal waste. Compost piles may not get hot enough to kill disease-causing organisms. 4. Don t hose animal waste towards the street. It spreads contaminants. 5. Always remove waste from areas where children play or you garden. 6. Always wash your hands with soap and water after dealing with animal waste. Dumpsters will be arriving on Tribal Lands Friday, August 27 th Dumpsters are for the use of KILKICH RESIDENTS ONLY Please DO NOT put electronics, cell phones, or batteries in the dumpsters Appliances, motor oil, antifreeze, paint, solvents, and any questionable items ARE NOT ALLOWED in the dumpsters Please recycle all recyclable items such as newspapers, magazines, tin cans, plastics, etc There is a recycle bin next to the Tribal Community Center Please DO NOT put glass in the recycle bin For more information, please call the CIHA office at

4 Page 4 Sea~Ha Runner PLANNING FOR A DISASTER IS ESSENTIAL, especially living close to coastal waters. If you don t already have a disaster plan in place, here are some helpful tips to get you started. You may need to survive on your own after a disaster. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. Since you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare supplies for home, work, and vehicles. You should store at least one gallon of drinking water per person per day; two gallons is best Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open it until you need to use it 3-day supply of non-perishable Home Your disaster supplies kit should contain essential food, water, and supplies for at least three days. Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept. Additionally, you may want to consider having supplies for up to two weeks. Work food; canned and boxed food Flashlight & extra batteries Portable, battery-powered radio or television & extra batteries First aid kit & manual Matches & waterproof container Extra clothing Whistle Photocopies of credit & ID cards Cash & coins Kitchen accessories & cooking utensils; a can opener Sanitation & hygiene products; moist towelettes & toilet paper Special items - medications, eyeglasses, contact lens solutions, hearing aid batteries Pocket knife & gloves Dust mask This kit should be in one container, and ready to "grab and go" in case you are evacuated from your workplace. Cell phone & a rechargeable calling card Supplies for animals Emergency telephone numbers Blankets or sleeping bags Tarp / Umbrella Make sure you have food and water in the kit. Also, be sure to have comfortable walking shoes at your workplace in case an evacuation requires walking long distances. Car In case you are stranded, keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car. This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal supplies. Just as important as putting together your disaster supply kit is maintaining your supply kit with fresh supplies. Keep canned foods in a dry, cool place, check dates, and replace outdated goods with fresh goods Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers to protect from pests and extend shelf life Change stored food and water supplies every six months; be sure to write the date stored on all containers Re-think your needs every year & update your kit Keep items in airtight plastic bags, and put your entire disaster supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as an unused trash can, camping backpack, or duffel bag FEMA has a wonderful website with in-depth information and more tips.
