3 What We re All About Camp Tamarack has earned the confidence and loyalty of thousands of campers, parents and staff. Tamarack s private 1000 acre property, surrounding a pristine lake, is the magical setting for the building of skills, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Tamarack has a unique, challenging and fun premise that is appealing to campers and parents. We provide our 6-16 year old campers with an exciting and unparalleled summer camp experience. We strive not only to expose them to an amazing blend of opportunities and programs, but also to build each camper s self-esteem, confidence and independence. The values of respect, responsibility and perseverance are incorporated into all aspects of camp life. Teaching campers to be team players and an integral part of the Tamarack community goes hand in hand with recognizing that each camper is an individual with unique needs and goals. The collective experience of Tamarack s Directors in overnight camping, as well as in running Zodiac Day Camp and Zodiac Swim School, makes Camp Tamarack the logical destination and best alternative for your camper s summer experience.

4 Our Director Team Rick Howard, L.L.B. Director/Owner Rick practiced business law for over 10 years and has spent many years as the Director/Owner of Camp Tamarack, Zodiac Day Camp and Zodiac Swim School. Rick s organizational and business skills, sense of humour and natural ability and effectiveness in dealing with campers, staff and parents have also proven successful in his other experiences as a parent, coach and teacher. Rick has a long history of overnight camp experience, having been a counsellor, unit head, head counsellor and camp director. Rick is also a long-time volunteer and leader in the Ontario Camping movement, a member of the Society of Camp Directors, and a Past President of the Ontario Camps Association. Ellen Howard, B.P.H.E., B.Ed. Director/Owner Ellen has consistently loved her roles as Director/Owner of Camp Tamarack, Zodiac Swim School and Zodiac Day Camp. In addition, she has brought her enthusiasm, creativity, leadership and love of children (including 3 of her own) to a wide variety of other roles, including physical and health education teacher, swim director and camp program director, much of her past experience having been at overnight camp. Ellen is a volunteer with the Lifesaving Society, a member of Parks and Recreation Ontario and the Society of Camp Directors, and is a standards visitor and active member of the Ontario Camps Association. Marc Cooper, B.A. - Director Marc has literally grown up and is part of the fabric at Camp Tamarack. As a long-time camper, counsellor, unit head and, since 2001, Camp Director, Marc has seen the impressive evolution of Camp Tamarack. Marc, together with his wife, Carly, and son, Jack, are excited about being part of Tamarack s present and future. 5 Our Tamarack Team Our Leadership Team Tamarack is both proud and fortunate to have a professional, experienced and dynamic leadership team. Our senior management, unit heads and activity heads are committed to ensuring that our campers have the safest and most rewarding and memorable summer possible. Many are teachers, training to become teachers and/or work with children year round. While we work hard to honour and maintain Tamarack s history and traditions that have evolved since its inception in 1981, we also seek to improve and enhance the Tamarack experience. Ideas and suggestions from Tamarack campers, parents and staff, as well as those gained from Tamarack s involvement in the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) and North American camping movement, are seriously considered and often implemented. Our Staff Team No matter how great a camp s activities and facilities are and we are pretty proud of Camp Tamarack s program and infrastructure it is the people, the campers and staff, that literally give life to a camp. Camp Tamarack s caring, committed and professional staff members are truly in a class of their own. The combination of veterans who have grown up at Tamarack, together with newer staff whose ideas and energy are contagious, makes for a high-quality, kid-focused group of leaders. Tamarack staff members are thoroughly interviewed, trained and evaluated to understand that our goal and responsibility are to develop safe and fun activities and cohesive and effective cabin groups, while always focusing on the needs and aspirations of each individual camper. Camp Tamarack s enthusiastic and involved Directors and Owners appreciate, and never take for granted, the trust that Tamarack families place in us. We look forward to building and growing strong relationships with Tamarack campers, staff and families for many years to come. 3

8 The Program Intro Camp Tamarack s program is designed to provide campers with unforgettable opportunities and exposure to an incredible array of sports, arts, waterfront and other special programs and activities. Our experienced and professional staff members not only facilitate the development of each camper s skills, but, equally importantly, create a fun, challenging and supportive environment that builds self-confidence and enjoyment. Cabin Opportunities & Individual Choice Camp Tamarack s unique program provides a healthy balance of cabin opportunities and individual choice. Cabin activities enable the campers and counsellors from a particular group to enjoy one another s company and build their cabin group identity, while getting exposure to a wide variety of Tamarack activities. The individual choice opportunities allow campers to enjoy an in-depth focus in specific activities that interest them with other campers their age. Hawthorn, Juniper and Sequoia Campers (6-14) Hawthorn (ages 6-10), Juniper (ages 11-12) and Sequoia (ages 13-14) campers, on a daily basis from Monday to Saturday, experience and enjoy: One Zodiac Swim School-Calibre Swim Instruction Period Two Cabin Group Activity Periods Two Individual Choice/Specialty Periods 9 and 14-day introductory sessions and 3, 4 or 7-week sessions are available. 9 and 14 day session campers have the guaranteed opportunity to extend and are only available for those turning 7-12 years old in Elder Campers (Ages 15-16) Elder campers are in an exciting transition phase working towards the opportunity to become Camp Tamarack staff. In addition to their involvement in Camp Tamarack s array of activities, Elder campers gain invaluable experience through various leadership training sessions and opportunities, as follows: Pre-CITs (15 Year Olds): Pre-CIT campers finishing Grade 9 and turning 15 in 2015 enjoy a blend of group and individual choice opportunities, as well as leadership training and placements. While most Pre-CITs enjoy and benefit from the Full Season 7-week period, our First Session (July) is an option for Pre-CITs. The Monday to Saturday Pre-CIT program highlights include: One Daily Zodiac Swim School-Calibre Swim Instruction Period One Daily Group Activity Period Majority of Day in Cabin/Activity Placement Other Leadership Workshops, Training and Feedback A 3 Day/2 Night Rafting Trip is an additional highlight available for Full Season Pre-CIT campers which will take place for all Elders during Second Session (after First Session). CITs (16 Year Olds): CIT campers finishing Grade 10 and turning 16 in 2015 (priority going to those who have successfully completed Tamarack s Pre-CIT program), are primarily focused on developing and refining the skills necessary to become top-notch Tamarack staff. All CITs enjoy and benefit from the Full Season 7-week period. While having the chance to participate in a variety of Tamarack activities from Monday to Saturday, CITs choose a full-day placement with a cabin or activity. They also receive a daily Zodiac Swim School-calibre opportunity, as well as extensive leadership training, workshops and feedback from evaluations. The popular 3 day/2 night rafting trip and other group bonding opportunities give CITs a well-rounded experience and foot in the door for a highly sought after Tamarack staff position (priority goes to Elders who have completed both full-summer Pre-CIT and CIT programs).

9 Other Program Pluses... Zodiac Swim School-Calibre Swim Program All campers will receive a daily swim instruction period, based on an appropriate Red Cross or Lifesaving Society program level, or another exciting aquatic opportunity. Camp Tamarack s direct connection with Zodiac Swim School results in a special emphasis on the quality and ratio of swim lessons, the training of waterfront staff, and the overall safety and supervision of such activities and areas. Super Sundays Super Sunday is a popular tradition at Camp Tamarack which encompasses a sleep-in, buffet breakfast and open activities. Campers enjoy a relaxed, fun-filled day of their favourite activities and an opportunity to chill with friends. Evening Programs The fun and excitement at Camp Tamarack continue in the evening with creative and enjoyable cabin, unit and camp-wide programs. Games, challenges, socials and camp plays/shows are just some of the amazing programs on the agenda! The evening is topped off with a nightly snack. Special Theme Programs and Camp Spirit Special theme days and programs only serve to enhance Camp Tamarack s multi-faceted, popular program. A terrific blend of fun, fair competition and team-building are all part of the Tamarack World Games, All-Day programs, Carnival Day, Swim and Tennis Marathons, theme days, and other special programs. Cheering, singsongs, campfires and overall camp spirit are integral parts of what is special about Tamarack. Special Guests While amazing staff and programs provide Tamarack s heart and soul, entertainers and other special guests have been known to unexpectedly add a new twist to a Tamarack day for campers and staff! Trips and Excursions Cabin and/or unit trips and excursions may include overnights at the end of Tamarack s beautiful Duck Lake, and other safe and supervised out-of-camp opportunities. Free Time Balanced alongside Tamarack s varied and organized program experiences is a chance for each camper to enjoy some individual, unstructured time. While counsellors help guide campers, particularly the youngest ones, before and after most meals, campers can visit their favourite activities, enjoy a recreational swim, write a letter, hang out with their friends or even take a shower! Camp Leagues and Intercamp Competitions Fun and exciting in-camp leagues at Tamarack such as the TBL (Tamarack Baseball League), TNFL (Tamarack National Football League), and THBL (Tamarack Handball League), and intercamp competitions involving other camps are popular Tamarack traditions. 7

The Acorn program is intended as a one-time introductory opportunity and all Acorn campers are strongly encouraged to sign up to enjoy a 3, 4 or 7-week session as a next logical step. Three 3-day, 2-night weekend experiences are available departing at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and returning at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday: Mini-Acorn I Friday July 10 Sunday July 12, 2015 Mini-Acorn II Friday July 31 Sunday August 2, 2015 Who?
