Camp Floyd Rogers CAMPER & PARENT GUIDE 2016 CAMP BEGINS JUNE 19th AND ENDS ON JUNE 25th A letter from the director Campers & Parents, I am so excited to meet our 2016 camp family and I know our new assistant director Christopher Villarreal is too! The school year flew by and we have been working hard to make CFR 2016 the best camp season yet. Please take time to look over this packet and gain valuable information for the camp week. Should you have any questions, feel free to reach out and ask. Please make sure the checklist included in this guide is complete before coming to camp. This will allow for a smooth check in process. The theme for camp this year is Up, Up, & Away inspired by the movie Up! See you soon for CFR 2016! Carrie Busing, Camp Director

Send camper s to campers@campfloydrogers.com Please include your campers name and cabin number in the subject line. c. You can see pictures and updates for camp on our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter: 7. Trust that your child is safe and under the care of experienced staff. Planning and preparing for camp is a year round process. There is continuity of quality counseling and staff that helps to increase camper self awareness and promotes building new relationships, developing self confidence, learning new skills, forming lifetime friendships, and having lots of fun. Counseling staff is retained upon their ability to work with campers in positive ways. Considerable time and effort is spent in staff recruitment and training to ensure a quality staff. 2
A letter from the medical director Dear Parents, We are excited for another great year at Camp Floyd Rogers. Camp will be starting soon and preparations are already underway. Here are a few thoughts on what to bring (and what not to bring) in the way of medical supplies for your camper. We will have the following types of insulin available for use at camp. Novolog Humalog Apidra Lantus Levemir Additionally, we have glucometers, test strips, syringes, alcohol wipes, lancets, ketone test strips and glucagon. It is not necessary to bring these items. We receive a few requests each year to use insulin pens at camp. Unfortunately, due to issues of storage and the logistics of insulin dosing, we are not able to accommodate the use of insulin pens at camp. We are not able to make exceptions to this policy, however, our medical staff will be happy to assist campers in the administration of insulin if needed. We use disposable, single use lancets at camp. If the camper is on an insulin pump, please send adequate supplies for 5 site changes (we will probably only do 3 changes at camp, but this provides extra just in case). If your child has multiple basal patterns, we recommend that you set the pump basal to the most active pattern before coming to camp. If your child uses a CGMS monitor (subcutaneous glucose sensor) and you want them to use it at camp, bring the device and sensor probes to camp. Since the campers are active, they may dislodge the site more frequently than at home. We will not have spare sensor devices. We cannot take responsibility for lost sensors or monitors. We will continue to monitor all campers closely regardless of whether they are using a sensor, so if you wish, you may opt to not use the sensor while you child is at camp. Please make sure to bring a copy of your child s camp physical form with you. Campers cannot be admitted to the camp without this paperwork. Because of the volume of medications we see at camp, we request that you do not send vitamins or supplements unless they are prescribed by your child s physician to treat a specific medical problem. Our dietary staff provides well balanced meals and vitamins can be resumed once the child returns home. You do not need to bring over-the-counter as needed medications to camp. We have Tylenol, ibuprofen, Mylanta, tums, benedryl, hydrocortisone cream, neosporin and other basic medicine cabinet remedies available. We look forward to seeing you at camp check-in on Sunday, June 19 th! Gregory T. Penny, MD Medical Director 3
Medical Information Special Medications The camp, through donation and contributions by major manufacturers and suppliers, provides all of the insulin, disposable syringes, alcohol wipes, blood glucose monitors, test strips, as well as other medical supplies. If in doubt of whether or not your camper will need something, bring the medical item with you to camp. If it is not needed, you may take it home with you. Campers on insulin pumps should bring their infusion sets (we change every 2 days) and other pump supplies. All camper medicines brought to camp need to be in their original containers and well marked. We suggest you put all items in a Ziploc back marked with your camper s name. Home control vs. camp control of blood glucose levels Dr. Penny relates that over the last few camp seasons we have been analyzing bedtime blood glucoses and night time reactions in order to reduce the number of lower blood glucoses at night and the number of reactions. It will be the camp's goal that campers have a blood glucose of 150 at bedtime. Fifty percent of campers with a blood glucose of 120 or under at bedtime need to be fed again between 10 P.M. and 4 A.M. because of blood glucose under 80 or outright reactions. This is probably due to delayed post exercise hypoglycemia. Campers with blood sugars above 140 were much less likely of having problems. So, campers and parents should expect a reduction in evening insulin. This is a safety factor and exceptions will be made only as campers show that lower blood glucoses predict night time low blood sugar patterns. Screening of families of people with Type 1 Diabetes This free screening is part of a national research program called Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, and is currently screening relatives of people with type 1 diabetes. Researchers are conducting this study to understand more about the development of diabetes and to look at ways to prevent or delay type 1 diabetes. Through a blood test, doctors can determine if an individual may be at risk for diabetes years before symptoms appear. This free screening program will be conducted by national personnel coming to the camp June 19, from 1:30 to 4:30, from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Those that may be screened are family members of people with type 1 diabetes. Parents, children, brothers and sisters are eligible to be screened as are cousins, nephews and grandchildren. No appointment is necessary for the screening process. 4
ASSISTING IN CAMPER ADJUSTMENT Your proper preparation of your child for this June's camp assures proper adjustment to living at camp and away from home. Children may have fear about living away from home - at least initially. We appreciate any help or reassurance that you are able to give your camper prior to arrival at camp. Please explain to your camper that they will be missed, but you want them to gain the benefit of the camp experience. Our staff is property trained to work with all children and facilitate and ease their transition in active camp living. Trust that our directors and counseling staff know their job and can work well with your child. IF YOUR CHILD CANNOT ATTEND CAMP: We have a capacity enrollment plus a large number on a camp waiting list. If for any reason your child cannot attend the camp please let us know IMMEDIATELY. By doing this, we can make adjustments in our planning and possibly take another child in his or her place from our waiting list. Your help in this matter is appreciated. ***Also, we expect all campers to attend the full camp session. This means not arriving a day late or leaving early. Campers are not allowed to leave for any reason during the camp week. If this is a problem for you, please let us know NOW! Campers of driving age are not to drive to camp. A legal guardian must be present at check-in. Campers will not be allowed to arrive or depart from camp if they have driven themselves. The Floyd Rogers Diabetic Foundation Walk The Floyd Rogers Diabetic Foundation Walk raises money to benefit Camp Floyd Rogers and its campers. Help us keep the Camp Floyd Rogers traditions alive! Please talk with friends, family and use social media to help us raise money for the Floyd Rogers Diabetic Foundation Walk. All funds raised directly benefit Camp Floyd Rogers and its campers. The walk is part of the reason the fee to attend Camp Floyd Rogers is $500 when the actual cost is in excess of $1000 per camper. The Floyd Rogers Diabetic Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law. Have all online donations specify the camper's name as the reason for the donation. Donations for all cabins are totaled with the top cabins receiving special prizes and event while at camp. Use the link below to send online contacts to the donations page: Use the link below to obtain a paper copy of the Floyd Rogers Diabetic Foundation Walk form. The filled out form with all money must be turned in at check in. Both online and paper form donations will go towards the camper's totals.
***NEW THIS YEAR!!!*** Please read all of the information below. As you may know, bed bugs are becoming more and more common in the Omaha area as well as many other parts of the country. The Eastern Nebraska 4H camp and Camp Floyd Rogers have dealt with bed bugs in the past, and are trying to be as proactive as possible to ensure that the camp facilities stay bed bug free. A bed bug detecting dog goes through all of the camp cabins to make sure there are no traces of bed bugs. Bed bug detecting dogs are 95% accurate in finding live bugs and eggs. This year, they have increased the frequency of the dogs to every week during the summer. The last check will be performed on Saturday, June 18th, the day before Camp Floyd Rogers check-in. We ask for your help in preventing the spreading of bed bugs. Please wash all clothes and bedding that you will bring to camp in hot water and dry on high heat. Do the same when you return home. If you happen to find any bed bugs in your belongings after camp, please notify the Camp Director. As an added layer of prevention, we will also be inspecting all incoming baggage with the dog. This will be done during the registration process and will take less than one minute per camper. There will be a station set up in the lodge to complete this. Note this is a change. We are asking you to bring all of your luggage, bedding, and pillows to the lodge with you for check-in. You will not need to open your bags. If the dog does give a positive signal for bed bug scent, we will heat treat that bag before it can enter the cabins. Below is some information about bed bugs that may be helpful to you. Please contact us if you have any questions. Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation. What are bed bugs? Bed bugs are small, non-flying insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown and are sometimes mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches. These bugs can be found in many places, but most commonly where people sleep. They are good hiders and can be spread by clothing, bedding, suitcases, furniture, etc. While their bites may cause itching and discomfort, bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases. What can you do to help? 1. Learn to identify bed bugs. Look for rows of bites on your body or blood or dark spots on your sheets, pillow, or mattress. 2. Treat all clothing, bedding, and luggage before you come to come. Launder in hot water and dry on high heat. Extreme heat kills bed bugs. 3. Be aware of your surroundings while traveling. Whether going to a fancy hotel, or a friend s house, inspect where you will be sleeping. Do not put luggage on the bed. 4. Having bed bugs does not mean you are dirty or unsanitary. It just means you had the bad luck of coming in contact with them. 6
