1 10:39 AM Page 1 To Parents Mission Statement Glen Bernard Camp provides a caring experience in which campers and staff develop self confidence. The environment fosters both independence and group belonging. Fun is fundamental to the success of GBC. Location and Facilities Glen Bernard is ideally situated on 700 acres of land which includes a kilometre of shoreline along the east side of Lake Bernard. Campers sleep in cabins accommodating 8 to 10 campers. Counsellor cabins are separate, but close by. Shower and toilet facilities are centrally located in each section. Everyone assembles in the dining hall for meals which are planned to meet Ministry of Health and Ontario Camping Association standards for water, food preparation, sanitation and... camper approval! Health and safety are a primary concern at GBC; our qualified and caring staff includes a resident physician and counsellors are always available through the night. Activities Land Activities Rock Climbing, High Elements Ropes Course, Low Elements Ropes Challenge, Mountain Biking, Beach Volleyball, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, Archery, Golf, Trampoline, Orienteering, Riding (optional) Water Activities Swimming and Lifesaving, Canoeing, Camp is a unique experience because it offers opportunities that are not available anywhere else. There are all kinds of exciting activities and programs through which campers improve their skills. Days are shared with carefully selected leaders who patiently guide and encourage. Camp is informal; yet it provides enough framework to allow campers to appreciate open space, sunsets, star-scattered skies and sparkling, clear water. Camp offers the chance to learn that becoming independent is important, at the same time recognizing the rights and needs of others. And camp provides the opportunity to better understand oneself. Jocelyn Palm has been the owner and director of Glen Bernard since Jocelyn joined GBC as a staff member following fifteen years as a camper and counsellor in Quebec. From 1959 to 1965 she held a number of senior staff positions at GBC including waterfront and senior section director and leader of the counsellor-in-training program. She was also a staff member at the Ontario Camp Leadership Centre (Bark Lake). Jocelyn was the National Director of The Royal Life Saving Society Canada for 15 years. She is a past President of both the Canadian and Ontario Camping Associations. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Jocelyn holds degrees in Science and in Education. She has taught secondary school in Toronto. Glen Bernard was founded in 1922 by Mary S. Edgar. Upon her retirement in 1956, John and Barbara Gilchrist assumed the directorship for 21 years. Advisory committees which include current and former campers, parents and staff, assist with the continuous evaluation and improvement of GBC. Jocelyn has a life-long interest in programs that foster the development of leadership skills. In 1977, Jocelyn Palm became the third owner and director of GBC. Days at Glen Bernard are structured to combine fun with the satisfaction of accomplishment. Campers are divided into 8 sections Adventurers, Blazers, Voyageurs, Pioneers, Explorers, Seekers, Leaders and Pacers according to age and school grade. The program is specifically designed to provide variety and changes in pace in the camper s day. Campers entering Grade 11 are members of the Pacer section. The Pacer program focuses on developing skills and teaching techniques in camp activities, while giving campers the opportunity to earn a Grade 11 Ontario High School credit. I sincerely believe that camp helps to develop attitudes and values in a way particular to this unique environment. It is my hope that camp will become a part of your daughter s life experience which she will cherish long after her days at Glen Bernard. 4 10:40 AM Page 2 Climbing Swimming and Lifesaving Program We love fun at Glen Bernard. Fun is sometimes noisy and active and sometimes quiet and thoughtful. Both aspects are important to our busy program. Each day begins with flag raising and a thought for the day. Mornings include scheduled learning opportunities in camp activities. Most campers have a swimming and life saving class everyday. Crafts, earth education, sailing, canoeing and wonders of the wilderness, kayaking, climbing and landsports are organized in the morning with each camper participating in each activity two to three times within a 6-day cycle. In the afternoon, each camper chooses two activities from a variety of options that change daily. After supper, the camp program differs each day an all-camp special event in which all age groups come together, or a cabin group activity, or section game. The informal Sunday gatherings led by campers and staff focus on messages that encourage campers to maximize their experiences at GBC. At Glen Bernard there is a high regard for things that form a universal language the sound of waves against the shore, the rustle of wind in the trees, the stillness at sunset, a smile. Each day is filled with opportunities... challenge yourself on the cliffs or high elements ropes course, participate in a sailing race, play in the water on the step jets, inner tubes or water seesaw, improve your shot at golf, challenge another cabin to a game of beach volleyball, paddle across the lake the choices of new things to do are limitless. Swim instruction by qualified staff members is an important aspect of the camp program. Every camper needs aquatic skills in order to get the most enjoyment from water based activities in the safest way possible. We base instruction on the programs of the Lifesaving Society and other recognized level achievements. Sailing and Boardsailing Nothing can match the thrill of skillfully capturing the wind and feeling the spray of water on our faces. The sailing program provides an opportunity for both the beginner and advanced sailor to improve her skills. Races are held frequently to provide friendly competition. Glen Bernard s fleet includes: Lasers, Hobie Waves, Bytes, Picos, Fevas plus a number of sailboards in a variety of sizes. Canoeing and Kayaking Challenge yourself on our low and high elements ropes courses. Climb to new heights on over 20 elements in The Jungle, work with cabin mates to complete the tasks presented to you on the low ropes elements, or scale the GBC rock cliffs with our Rocks and Ropes programs. Crafts Explore your creative side by learning to throw a pot on the pottery wheel, build a wood project in our woodshop, craft a stained glass project, make a pendant with the lapidary machines, create a papier mâché masterpiece crafts is always a favourite camp activity. Special Programs Period Three Period Three offers the regular camping program. In addition, special programs are available for those with advanced skills in tripping or theatre. On a limited basis, campers may enroll in one of these optional programs. The art of canoeing, which is so much a part of our Canadian heritage, takes us places we can not reach by any other means. As in all skill programs at GBC, a series of levels challenges each camper, whether a beginner or advanced canoeist. Theatre Program The Theatre program (for campers entering Kayaking is an exciting and challenging sport that is very popular at Glen Bernard. Learn basic flatwater kayaking skills, master an Eskimo Roll or perhaps participate in a Kayak overnight. Campers who are participating in this program spend most of their time preparing for the major productions which are performed for the entire camp. Prior experience is not required; however, it is most important to have a special interest in theatre. Because most of the day is taken up with theatre aspects, participation in other camp activities is limited. Tripping Experienced, qualified staff plan canoe trips with campers who have chosen to participate. There are a variety of pre-selected routes that vary from 3 to 7 days in length. The duration of the trip and degree of challenge depend upon the camper s age and skill level. Younger campers participate in an overnight on Lake Bernard and camp at sites owned by GBC at various locations around the lake. Grade 8 and older) offers an experience in all aspects of theatrical production. This involves scenery and prop construction, makeup and costume design which complement performance skills. Wilderness Canoe Trip Campers who especially love tripping have the opportunity of a 12-day canoe trip. The participants are years old and the route is unique each year. Following in-camp preparation, campers spend a rewarding 12 days on trip then return to GBC for our closing events. Live Lightly: Our Focus on nvironmental Sustainability The GBC experience offers tremendous educational opportunities to demonstrate respect for the natural world. GBC's Eco Education program and activities in this area consider; our relationship with the natural world, understanding our impact upon it, and taking action to use it wisely. Our slogan, Live Lightly applies both to the atmosphere of fun and the commitment we share to care for the earth. Campers have opportunities to understand their dependence upon one another and on the earth s natural systems. Glen Bernard demonstrates the commitment to environmental sustainability in all aspects of facilities and program. The requirements for hydro, propane, gasoline and oil are reduced wherever possible and the shift is made to solar energy. Lights are energy efficient and materials are recycled wherever possible. Solar power services several camp buildings and solar hot water is utilized in washrooms and shower houses. Composting toilets are also a part of our environmental focus. The Living Lightly Lab features learning stations that emphasize the environmental impacts of sustainable technology. Campers interact with solar electric panels, roof gardens, a weather station, roofing materials and daylighting features. The 700 acre property, including lots of forest area, provides space for campers to develop skills in environmental literacy and stewardship. A solar powered boat demonstrates the use of solar energy in a purely recreational sphere. These facilities are expanding to embrace new technologies as new systems and products are developed.

8 10:39 AM Page 1 To Parents Mission Statement Glen Bernard Camp provides a caring experience in which campers and staff develop self confidence.
