5 ENGLISH THE UNLOADER POSITIONING Your Össur knee brace is custom molded to a model of your leg. To achieve the most accurate fit, begin by positioning your brace with the center of the hinge approximately in line with the top of your kneecap. (Note:This positioning will initially be higher than where it will be worn.) The brace will settle after initial application. Sit on the edge of a chair and fully extend your leg. Now attach your brace straps in the following sequence: Mid Strap (Figure 1) While ensuring proper brace position, wrap the strap around the back of your leg above the calf muscle, thread it through the strap ring and secure. The strap should be as tight as possible without restricting circulation or causing cramping. Calf Strap (Figure 2) Wrap the strap around your calf, thread it through the strap ring and secure. Do not over tighten. Thigh Strap (Figure 3) Wrap the lower strap around the back of your thigh, thread it through the strap ring and secure. Repeat the procedure for the upper strap. The Dynamic Force Strap (DFS) (Figure 4) Wrap the strap around the back of your leg and thread it through the strap ring on the thigh shell. Bend your braced knee to an angle of approximately 80 degrees. While holding the thigh shell, to prevent the brace from moving, tighten the DFS. The DFS should be worn snug for maximum pain relief. After the brace settles into position, the thigh straps may need to be tightened. When standing, the straps on your Unloader Select brace should look like on Figure 5 (front and back views). BRACE MAINTENANCE Your Össur Knee brace is designed for minimum maintenance and care. Follow these easy steps to keep your knee brace in top condition. Hinge Lubrication A tube of heat resistant silicone lubricant is supplied with each Össur brace. Apply a small quantity with a toothpick or similar device to the inner surfaces of the hinge, where visible. Lubricate the hinge several times a year. do not disassemble the hinge! Liner Cleaning Identify the liner type included with your brace, then clean the liners according to the recommended procedure. Doeskin MTLS removable liners (Black fabric on both sides with mesh decorative panel) may be either hand or machine washed in cold water with mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly and air-dried. 5

6 Volara removable liners (Black fabric on one side and foam on the other side, with center cutout) may be hand washed in cold water with mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly and air-dried. Ultra-Grip removable liners (Specialized liners with silicone slip- resistant coating) may be hand or machine washed in cold water with mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly and air-dried. Non-removable liners may be hand washed using a sponge or soft cloth and cold water with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry. Strap Cleaning Straps may be hand-washed using a mild detergent soap and a soft brush, then rinsed thoroughly and air-dried. do not remove straps. Reconditioning Wear and time may take their toll on your brace. Your brace can be fully reconditioned. For more information call Customer Service ( ).
