I I 1 Suggested Installation Instructions for: , Embroidered Front End Mask 2-Cover Hooks 4-Air Foil Inserts 2-2" "U" Shaped Trim Locks 4-2" ADHESIVE BACKED Hook Strips 2-14" ADHESIVE BACKED Hook Strips 2-2" "U" Shaped Hook Backed Trim Locks PLEASE NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLATION, CAREFULLY READ THE ENCLOSED ADDITIONAL MULTI-PIECE MASK INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SHEET, FORM , REGARDING THE MANUFACTURERS GENERAL INFORMATION, PRE-INSTALLATION CHECK-LIST, RECOMMENDATIONS, WARNINGS, PRECAUTIONS AND CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES: STEP 1. Open the hood and secure in position. Center the mask over the front, fitting the vinyl flap on the top around the inside edge of the engine compartment. STEP 2. Secure the flap in place by fitting 1-2" "U" shaped trim lock over the vinyl and inside edge of the nose on each side. STEP 3. From the driver's side with 1-2" "U" shaped hook backed trim lock, determine the location the inside edge of the fender where the top tab will be bent around the wheel well opening. Snugly fit the trim onto that location. STEP 4. Bend the top tab around the wheel well opening, making sure the loop strip on the tab mates securely with the "U" shaped hook backed trim lock installed on the inside edge of the fender. STEP 5. Repeat STEPS 3 & 4 on the passenger's side. STEP 6. Repeat the "U" shaped hook backed trim lock installation and tab bending procedure for the middle tab around the inside edge of the fender on each side. STEP 7. Bend the remaining tab around the inside edge of the fender on each side. STEP 8. Thread each of the two webbing straps on the bottom through a cover hook. Attach the hooks to any convenient location, pull the straps snug. STEP 9. Bend the two tabs on the front around the underside of the spoiler. STEP 10. Bring the headlight doors to the UP position. Attach 1-14" ADHESIVE BACKED hook strip to the UNDERSIDE of each light frame above the light. STEP 11. Align the covers over their respective doors and securely mate the loop strip on the mask with the adhesive backed hook strip installed on the UNDERSIDE of each light frame. STEP 12. Attach 1-2" ADHESIVE BACKED hook strip to the right and left INSIDE edge of each door corresponding the loop strip on each cover. STEP 13. Securely mate the loop strip on the right and left side of each cover with the adhesive backed hook strips installed on the INSIDE edge of each door. At this point, the mask should fit tight and be relatively wrinkle free. If not, reposition the tabs and amount of tension on the cover hooks. Some wrinkles may persist, but will come out after a few days use.
FRICTION BUCKLES Some designs have webbing straps sewn directly on the mask. Thread each webbing strap through the friction buckle as shown in the diagram Attach the buckles to the vehicle. Pull the straps snug, but do not overtighten as this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of place. Tie a knot in the end of the straps to prevent the friction buckles from being lost when the mask is not being used. These webbing straps are another way your Covercraft mask is adjustable after the vinyl expands or contracts, depending on the weather. 1) ATTACHMENT OF THE HOOD NOSE PIECE A. Open the hood and secure in position, in some cases with a hood support rod. B. On the underside of the mask some designs have a hood pocket, some have flaps with webbing straps attached, others have loop strips sewn on or there can be the combination of all methods. Determine the methods used in your design. C. Center the nose piece over the front leading edge of the hood. 1. Snugly fit the front leading edge and corners of the hood into the pocket. 2. Fold the flaps around the underside of the hood. Thread the webbing strap sewn on the drivers side through the tension adjuster sewn on the left side and pull the strap tight. Do not overtighten because this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of position. 3. In some cases thread the webbing straps on the mask through the friction buckles and attach to the holes in the underside of the hood. Pull the straps snug but do not overtighten as this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of position. 4. Securely attach a corresponding length of ADHESIVE BACKED hook to the UNDERSIDE of the hood corresponding to the length of the loop strips sewn on the mask. Fold the loop strips around the edge of the hood and securely mate with the adhesive backed hook installed on the underside of the hood. 5. Some designs have a foam flap (usually one-piece style, "M" series masks). Snugly fit the flap between the body panels or between the hand opening and body. It may be necessary to push on a body panel to position the flap property. (Fig. 10) 6. On some models there may be a small loop or pocket corresponding to the front edge of the fender above the lights. Position the loop or pocket around the front leading edge of the fender above the lights. 2) ATTACHMENT AT THE TOP OF THE FENDERS AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA A. Align the mask around the fender and light computers the drivers side. Open the hood and look for one or more of the following different types of attachments used for mounting the mask to the vehicle. 1. If there is a small pocket or loop corresponding to the front corner of the fender above the lights, position this Pocket or flap around the edge of the fender. 2. Some designs have a flap with a hole in it. Slip this flap OVER the hood adjustment button. When the hood is closed the mask will be secured. 3. If there is a strip of loop tape sewn on the edge of the vinyl, attach a corresponding length of self-adhesive hook tape at the location INSIDE the engine compartment. Attach the hook and loop together. 4. When the flap is plain, secure it in position over a body panel using a piece of plain "U" shaped trim-lock. (Refer to diagram- next page) 5. If there is a plastic piece sewn on the vinyl, ft this plastic flap between the fender and body panel. 6. For those designs that use a flap with a webbing strap attached, thread a cover hook through the strap and attach the hook to any convenient location inside the engine compartment. Pull the strap snug, but do not overtighten. B. Repeat the mask alignment and attachment on the passenger's side.
3. GRILL SECTION ATTACHMENT A. Align the grill screen over the grill, making sure the vinyl is not covering the air intake areas. 1. If there are webbing straps sewn on the top edge, thread a cover hook through each strap and attach the hooks) to any convenient location inside the engine compartment. Pull the straps snug, making sure the screen lines up properly over the grill. 2. If there is a strip of loop tape sewn on the edge of the vinyl, attach a corresponding length of adhesive hook tape at the location INSIDE the grill frame or supports. Line up the screen and attach the hook and loop together. 3. If the edge of the vinyl is plain with no visible attachment, position it over a the grill frame or body panel and secure it using a piece of plain "U" shaped trim-lock. 4. If there are plastic pieces or reinforced inserts along the edge of the vinyl, fit them into the openings between the grill frame and body panels/supports. DO NOT allow the plastic pieces to lay unsecured. 4. FENDER, BUMPER AND SPOILER ATTACHMENT A. Due to the stretch factor of vinyl, there is a small gap left between the edge of the mask and the wheel well. The bendable taps are used to adjust the mask tighter when the vinyl becomes warm. B. Inspect the underside of each tab to determine if there is a loop strip sewn on the tab. - If there is no loop strip on the tab, bend the tabs around the inside edge of the front fenders and bumper. - If there IS a loop strip on the tab refer to the section on page 2 regarding "HOOK BACKED "U" SHAPED TRIM LOCK" C. Attach the top tab on the driver's side first, then the top tab on the passenger side. D. Alternate from side to side attaching the remaining tabs around the wheel well openings. DON'T BE AFRAID TO STRETCH THE MASK. IF IT IS PROPERLY WARMED UP IT WILL STRETCH AND FORM FOR A GOOD FIT. 5. ATTACHMENT ACROSS THE FRONT, BOTTOM EDGE A. If there are tabs sewn along the bottom edge of the mask, bend the tabs around the underside of the body, around the bumper or spoiler. B. When there are webbing straps along the bottom, thread the straps through the friction buckles and attach the to any convenient location on the underside of the vehicle. Pull the straps snug but do not overtighten as this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of place. C. For those applications with a webbing strap on the right side of the license plate, thread the webbing strap through a friction buckle as instructed and illustrated earlier. Position the strap behind the plate. Attach the friction buckle to the loop on the opposite side. Pull the strap snug, but do not overtighten as this could cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of place. At this point, the mask should fit tight and be relatively wrinkle free. If not, reposition tabs and adjust tension, as needed, on any friction buckles, (if included on your application). Some wrinkles may remain, but will come out after a few days use as the vinyl stretches to its maximum size. 8e sure to keep the mask tight across the top of the hood. CHECK THE MASK FREQUENTLY FOR A TIGHT FIT, AS THE WARMTH OF THE ENGINE AND THE SUN WILL CAUSE THE MATERIAL TO STRETCH. FAILURE TO KEEP THE MASK TIGHT AGAINST THE TOP OF THE HOOD MAY CAUSE IT TO FLAP AND POSSIBLY DAMAGE THE PAINT. MASK REMOVAL: Work backwards from the above instructions. You don't have to unbend the cloth covered aluminum tabs completely, simply back them away from their holding points. Excessive bending will cause wear of the aluminum piece inside the cloth tab. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS Use any product that is compatible with vinyl to clean the black surface of the mask. Use mild soap and a sponge to clean the white underside of the mask. DO NOT USE a strong detergent or abrasive soap. Rinse the mask thoroughly and make sure both the mask and the vehicle's hood are ABSOLUTELY DRY before reinstalling. IMPORTANT WARNING Your mask is constructed of "breathable" perforated vinyl to help allow moisture that might collect from rain, dew, or other reasons, to evaporate through the mask rather than remain trapped. Under certain conditions of extreme heat or sun AFTER the mask has become wet, trapped moisture under the mask can cause clouding of paint. If the underside of your mask becomes wet, consider the weather conditions. If it is hot and sunny you should remove it immediately and allow the mask and your hood to dry completely before reinstallation. If clouding does occur from trapped moisture, the MANUFACTURER WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE.
We manufacture thousands of mask patterns for various years, makes and models of vehicles. This instruction sheet is designed to cover all aspects of the various attachment methods. Not all procedures will apply to your specific vehicle. Please read each segment carefully to determine what procedures apply to your specific application. NOTE: PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL YOUR NEW MASK. COVERCRAFT WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE RESULTING FROM THE FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND OR RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN. GENERAL INFORMATION These instructions are written to describe the installation procedures while you are standing at the front, facing the vehicle. The driver's side is your RIGHT and the passenger's side will be your LEFT. Your new mask is constructed from a "breathable" vinyl material. Vinyls are affected by weather conditions. Allow the mask to sit in the sun or other warm location, (ABOVE 80 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT), for a few minutes. This will allow the vinyl to soften and stretch, resulting in a properly tight fit as the mask cools after installation NOTE: In cooler climates it may be necessary to use a heater, hair dryer or other method to warm up the mask. DO NOT PUT IN MICROWAVE OVENS. DO NOT PLACE THE MASK DIRECTLY ON A HEATER. Make sure your vehicle is free from dirt before installing the mask. For best results, apply a heavy coat of wax to the surface of the vehicle in areas the mask will cover. A good polymer wax provides a clean, smooth surface for the mask. Pre-waxing and periodically renewing this coat of wax, will maximize the protection from your new mask. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USE OF THIS PRODUCT ON VEHICLES PAINTED WITHIN THE PAST DAYS. WE RECOMMEND YOU CHECK WITH THE PAINT & BODY SHOP THAT PAINTED YOUR VEHICLE FOR ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS. PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST Lay the mask on the front of the vehicle in the general position it would be in after installation. Review each section below and note those that are applicable for your installation. BUMPERS - Most passenger vehicle applications fit OVER the front bumper. The majority of the truck, van and utility vehicle applications are positioned BEHIND the bumper to allow use of accessories like push bars, brush guards, fog lights, etc. LICENSE PLATES - Many states do not require front license plates. Covercraft masks are designed with a flap made of matching vinyl and/or screen which is sewn into the area used for mounting the license. If your vehicle has a front license plate, carefully remove the flap by cutting the vinyl/screen flap as close as possible to the binding on the underside of the mask. SIDE CORNERING LIGHTS - Some vehicles have optional side cornering lights, CAREFULLY remove the corresponding flap portion of the mask by cutting the vinyl from the UNDERSIDE of the mask. If your vehicle does not have the cornering lights, leave the flaps in place. HOOK AND LOOP (or Velcro) - Hook and loop is a very strong fastening material widely used in place of snaps and zippers. Mating pieces can be attached and separated from each other many times. The tearing sound produced when separating hook and loop will not damage or weaken it. Once installed, it is not necessary to remove the hook when the mask is not being used. HOOK is either laminated on a "U" shaped trim lock or ADHESIVE BACKED. LOOP is sewn directly on the mask or sewn on the underside of the tabs that bend around the wheel well openings. ADHESIVE BACKED HOOK -Thoroughly clean and dry the surface of the area where the adhesive backed hook is to be installed BEFORE removing paper backing. We recommend isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol as the cleaning agent. HOOK BACKED U SHAPED TRIMLOK - Introduction of flat, inner wheel well liners made the use of U shaped TrimLok hook necessary. The TrimLok must be installed on the inside edge of the front fenders, on the edge of the liner or inside edge of the bumpers. If the liner is ON TOP of the inside edge of the front fenders, inseall the TrimLok on the edge of the LINER. If the liner is under the inside edge of the fender, install the TrimLok on the inside edge of the FENDER. PLEASE NOTE: The hook surface MUST BE facing the tires.
In some applications trim lock is required to be installed in other locations than the wheel well openings. These other locations could include the edge of the fenders inside the engine compartment or the top inside edge of the grill frame. TRIM LOCK - PLAIN Trim lock - plain holds a flap(s) in place at various locations inside the engine compartment. The locations can include: A. Inside edge of the fenders. B. The grill or grill frame. C. Support braces. D. Various edges within the engine compartment. The "U" shaped trim lock channels must be positioned over the vinyl flap(s), NOT over the binding that finishes the edges of the mask. PLEASE REMEMBER, vinyl stretches after it warms up. Readjust the tension on the flap(s) and trim lock(s) after a reasonable length of time. AIR FOIL INSERT INSTALLATION Most mask designs require the use of air foils located on the top rear edge of the mask to prevent flapping and vibration. Air rushing over the front of the hood presses against the airfoils and holds the mask down. If required, four (4) white plastic air foil inserts are included with your mask. Locate the pockets inside each air foil. These pockets are accessible from the outboard end of each air foil. Place one (1) white plastic insert inside each pocket. Tuck the flap inside the pocket. When done correctly the white plastic insert will not be visible. NOTE: FAILURE TO INSTALL THE PLASTIC AIR FOIL INSERTS CORRECTLY WILL ALLOW THE MASK TO VIBRATE AND DAMAGE THE PAINT. SEPARATE HEADLIGHT COVERS On the underside of each cover there is an R or L, determine the correct cover for each headlight door. For most installations the hood must be open and secured in position. The headlight doors should generally be in the DOWN position for installation of the rear portion and in the UP position for the installation of the front portions of the covers. DO NOT ATTACH ADHESIVE BACKED HOOK TO THE TOP PAINTED SURFACE OF THE HEADLIGHT DOORS. Center the covers over their respective headlight door. For applications where there is a loop strip sewn on the rear underside of the covers, securely attach a corresponding length of ADHESIVE BACKED hook to the REAR UNDERSIDE of each door. Securely mate the loop sewn on the rear of the covers with the hook attached to the REAR UNDERSIDE of each door. Bring the headlight doors to the UP position. Determine the length of the loop sewn on the front underside of the covers. Securely attach a corresponding length of ADHESIVE BACKED hook to the FRONT UNDERSIDE of each door or to the FRAME DIRECTLY ABOVE the headlights. Pull the covers forward and securely mate the loop sewn on the front underside of the covers with the hook installed on the FRONT UNDERSIDE of each door or to the FRAME DIRECTLY ABOVE the headlights. In cases where there is a flap or strip of plastic sewn on the rear edge of the covers, snugly fit the flap or strip of plastic into the opening between the rear underside of the headlight doors and the mounting brackets or molding. Pull the covers forward and securely mate the loop sewn on the front underside of the covers with the hook installed on the FRONT UNDERSIDE of each door or to the FRAME
FRICTION BUCKLES Some designs have webbing straps sewn directly on the mask. Thread each webbing strap through the friction buckle as shown in the diagram. Attach the buckles to the vehicle. Pull the straps snug, but do not over tighten as this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of place. Tie a knot in the end of the straps to prevent the friction buckles from being lost when the mask is not being 1) ATTACHMENT OF THE HOOD NOSE PIECE A. 1. Snugly fit the front leading edge and comers of the hood into the pocket. 2. Fold the flaps around the underside of the hood. Thread the webbing strap sewn on the driver's side through the tension adjuster sewn on the left side and pull the strap tight. Do not over tighten because this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of position. 3. In some cases thread the webbing straps on the mask through the friction buckles and attach to the holes in the underside of the hood. Pull the straps snug but do not over tighten as this can cause the mask to distort or be pulled out of position. 2) ATTACHMENT AT THE TOP OF THE FENDERS AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA A. Align the mask around the fender and light contour on the driver's side. Open the hood and look for one or more of the following different types of attachments used for mounting the mask to the vehicle. 1. If there is a small pocket or loop corresponding to the front comer of the fender above the lights, position this pocket or flap around the edge of the fender. (Refer to diagram) 5. If there is a plastic piece sewn on the vinyl, fit this plastic flap between the fender and body panel. 6. For those designs that use a flap with a webbing strap attached, thread a cover hook through the strap and attach the hook to any convenient location inside the engine compartment. Pull the strap snug, but do not over tighten. B. Repeat the mask alignment and attachment on the passenger's side.
3. GRILL SECTION ATTACHMENT A. Align the grill screen over the grill, making sure the vinyl is not covering the air intake areas. 1. If there are webbing straps sewn on the top edge, thread a cover hook through each strap and attach the hook(s) to any convenient location inside the engine compartment. 3. If the edge of the vinyl is plain with no visible attachment, position it over the grill frame or body panel and secure it using a piece of plain "U" shaped trim-lock. 4. If there are plastic pieces or reinforced inserts along the edge of the vinyl, fit them into the openings between the grill frame and body panels/ supports. DO NOT allow the plastic pieces to lay unsecured, 4. Be sure to keep the mask tight across the top of the hood.
