13 Gaby Hupfauer on the peak of the Ras Dashan,.5 m, Ethiopia s highest mountain in the Simien mountains. On her most recent trip, she brought new flutes for the shepherd boys. Gaby Hupfauer was the first German female mountaineer to climb Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Cho Oyu. Today she is part of the Deuter SL team developing women specific backpacks and she also leads expeditions for the DAV Summit Club the Mountaineering and Travel Club of the German Alpine Association. She brings back so many memories from all her travels, yet there is one encounter in particular that she will never forget: We were trekking in the Ethiopian highlands at a height of.000 m above sea level when we met really young shepherds. The ten year-old boys were looking after their family s sheep. The parents come to see them from time to time and bring food. I gave them one of my muesli bars but they returned it. Gaby was irritated and turned to the translator. After all, it was obvious how poor the kids were and that they had not much to eat. The translator explained the misunderstanding: before the boys would accept the meal, they wanted to play the flute for their white-skinned guests trading more or less a song for a muesli bar. And they had no pockets where they could store the muesli bar while playing. They were wearing simple cloaks made of fur. Gaby has been to Ethiopia three times now and she loves the place: It really is such a fantastic destination. World famous cultural sites such as the stone cathedrals of Lalibela, Gondar, where the Ethiopian kings used to live, or the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the holy city Axum as well as such beautiful places as the highest lake in Africa and the Blue Nile waterfalls. Yet for Gaby Hupfauer the highlight will always be the seven day trek with tents in the Simien highland. She explains: No other travel group goes there. And here is where you really get in contact with the Ethiopians. Here you can see how little things bring cultures closer, she says. Of course, local guides make it a lot easier for the travellers to communicate with the ministers, shepherds, or people from the villages. They make it possible to start interesting conversations. And the travellers also get the chance to help. The natives often come to our tents and ask us to dress a wound or similar. Of course, we do what we can and it is a great feeling, Gaby explains. She tries in general to help as much as she can. Small things, she says modestly. We have so much stuff at home, stored in some corner. Abandoned stuff we no longer need kid s glasses, a backpack but that can still be used. It can fulfil basic needs here instead of ending up in the trash at home. That is why she also asks all the members of the travelling group to use the luggage weight limit on the plane to the max and bring used jackets or kids clothing. One trekking group even started its own medical relief project. Again: from small things big things grow... 6
