How does it work? The traveller contacts a local family, a medical clinic or a school. 7 INSECT BITE PREVENTION Care Plus Insect Bite Prevention Insect repellents Care Plus has over 20 years of experience in producing the insect repellents that help protect all users in destinations all over the world from insect-borne diseases. Our Anti-Insect product range includes DEET, Natural, and Sensitive. If possible, wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. For optimum protection against bites and stings, we recommend applying Care Plus Anti-Insect DEET, Natural, or Sensitive to all exposed skin. Spread the insect repellent evenly with the palms of your hands. For protecting the face, rub a small amount of the insect repellent between your fingers and apply to your face. Then wash your hands and apply to the backs of your hands. Always clean your fingers after applying, to avoid ingesting the product when eating or drinking. When using on children, do not apply to body parts that can easily come into contact with the eyes or mouth, such as the hands and lower arms. first 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Then apply the insect repellent 20 minutes later (i.e. 10 minutes prior to sun exposure). Wash the treated areas of your skin well with water and soap when the protection is no longer required, or if you experience any side effects. A 60 ml package is sufficient for two weeks of daily use as directed. Product warnings Avoid contact with mucous membranes, eyes, nose, nostrils, mouth, and lips. Do not apply to damaged skin (wounds, sunburn, etc.). Do not apply under clothing or on places where the skin bends frequently (knees, elbows). This can lead to heat and sweating, skin irritation, and accelerated absorption by the skin. Do not spray directly into the face. Close package properly after use. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not expose to temperatures in excess of 50 C. Do not apply in small, poorly ventilated spaces. Do not smoke while using. Keep away from food/drink and pet and animal food. Do not reuse packaging for other purposes. Any remaining product should be disposed of as household chemical waste. In the event of contact with eyes, flush with water immediately and seek medical attention. If you experience feelings of discomfort or nausea, consult a doctor (if possible, present bottle with label). In rare cases, side effects may include redness or blistering of the skin. If this happens, discontinue use of the insect repellent immediately, as well as other products containing the same active ingredient. If using during the day, apply the insect repellent ten minutes prior to exposure to direct sunlight. DEET 50% offers up to 10 hours of protection. Natural 30% offers up to 6 hours of protection. Sensitive 12.5% offers up to 4 hours of protection. Sensitive 20% offers up to 6 hours of protection. More frequent application of the insect repellent is not recommended. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Official studies are not conducted on pregnant women. If you wish to use an insect repellent during pregnancy or while breast-feeding, we recommend choosing Anti-Insect Natural, because it is not readily absorbed by the skin. 10 INSECT BITE PREVENTION Care Plus Anti-Insect DEET General information DEET is the strongest insect repellent you can use on your skin. DEET is the abbreviation for the active ingredient N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (CAS no ). The active substance is effective against a variety of insect carriers of diseases, such as malaria mosquitoes and ticks. Consult the Care Plus Prevention table on page 9. DEET is recommended for use in risk areas for malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever. DEET is suitable for all destinations, whether far away or close to home. Our DEET is available in 30%, 40%, and 50% strengths. The percentage determines the active duration. DEET offers up to 10 hours of protection against bites and stings. Apply DEET products a maximum of once per day. The German consumer product test foundation Stiftung Warentest awarded Care Plus Anti-Insect DEET a rating of good in 2004 (50% lotion), 2010 (50% lotion), and 2013 (40% spray). Care Plus Anti-Insect DEET was given a positive test rating by the Dutch Consumers Association in 2005 (30% gel) and 2013 (40% spray). Care Plus DEET has been registered by Tropenzorg B.V. with local authorities, and is in compliance with all standards of safe and effective use when used as directed. Availability of DEET may depend on local biocide regulations. Bitrex Small children put products in their mouth as they explore their environment, without being aware of the potential risks of doing so. This is why we have added the odourless, bitter agent Bitrex to our Care Plus DEET products since Bitrex reduces the risk of the insect repellent being ingested by small children. 19 INSECT BITE PREVENTION Care Plus Anti-Insect Natural General information Care Plus Natural is based on natural lemoneucalyptus extracts. This is the only natural ingredient currently available as an insect repellent and with proven effectiveness in scientific laboratory and field studies. Anti-Insect Natural can be used by people with sensitive skin and by children aged three years and older. Its active ingredient is Citriodiol, a mixture of cis and trans-p-menthane-3,8 diol (CAS no ). Anti-Insect Natural is available at 30% active ingredient strength. The active substance is effective against a variety of insect carriers of diseases, such as malaria mosquitoes and ticks. Consult the Care Plus Prevention table on page 9. Natural offers up to six hours protection against stings and bites and is suitable for all destinations. Unlike Care Plus DEET, Care Plus Natural does not damage plastics and finished products such as spectacle frames, cameras, and table tops. Care Plus Natural has been registered by Tropenzorg B.V. with local authorities, and is in compliance with all standards of safe and effective use when used as directed. Sensitive is based on Saltidin, also known as Icaridin, KBR Its active ingredient is sec-butyl 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (CAS no ). Snow: UV intensity increases by 85% with the presence of snow. For example: A UV index of 10 becomes 27.4 (14.8 x 1.85 = 27.4) at an altitude of 3,000 when there is snow. For example: You have skin type 3 and are going for a walk in the snow at an altitude of 3,000 metres. You can spend 7.3 minutes in the sun without burning. With a sunscreen with SPF 15, this time is extended to minutes, or nearly two hours (7.3 min x 15 SPF = min). If you are spending the entire day outdoors, you will require a stronger sunscreen. Prevent tick bite Ticks do not live high in the trees, but in grass, bushes, heath, and in low-growing foliage. That is why they usually first come into contact with your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Ticks are active all year round, but most active from May to September, which is when most tick bites are reported. Don t give ticks a chance! Cover your skin as much as possible to prevent tick bites and tuck your trouser legs into your socks. With our impregnated Bugsox, you can protect your feet and ankles even more effectively from ticks. Uncovered skin can be protected with the Care Plus Anti-Insect product. Tip: Check each other! Are you in a risk area? Check yourself, your partner, and your children frequently for ticks. Step 2. Remove the tick Make sure to remove the tick within eight hours to minimize the possibility of infection. Remove the entire tick and disinfect the site of the bite with alcohol. The tick can be easily and safely removed using the Care Plus Tick Remover. Do not anesthetize the tick with alcohol or other antiseptics. Do not heat the tick with a cigarette or other hot objects. If the tick is stunned or heated (with a cigarette), it goes into shock and responds by releasing pathogens into the body through its saliva. Make sure to write down the date of the tick bite, the site of the bite on your body, and the area where you contracted the tick bite. Step 3. Test the tick You need to act quickly after suffering from a tick bite. If you wait for the first signs of illness, the disease can already have become chronic. 80 FIRST AID Ticks: facts and figures Arachnid A tick is not an insect, but an arachnid arthropod parasite. A tick has four pairs of legs and there is no visible difference between the front and Tick back of its body. Hard and soft ticks There are more than 800 species of ticks, and there are both hard and soft ticks. Hard ticks owe their name to their hard carapace, while the exoskeleton of the soft tick is leathery. Hard ticks go through life in three stages: larva, nymph, and adult tick. The nymphs are often no larger than the head of a pin. Parasites Ticks live off of the blood of people and especially animals, usually small rodents, pets, deer, sheep, and birds. A tick recognizes its host by vibrations and temperature. Ticks do not have any teeth. They attach themselves by embedding their mouth into the skin. Hard ticks burrow their head under the skin, where they can remain for up to 72 hours to suck blood. The tick that is found in the Netherlands is the sheep tick. problems. Lyme disease is found throughout Europe and in the United States, Siberia, China, and Japan. There are three stages to Lyme disease: 1. In 35-50% of cases, a red ring-shaped rash (Erythema migrans) appears at the site of the tick bite within three weeks. This rash slowly expands, fades in the middle and then disappears. 2. That is why it is so important to safely remove the tick as quickly as possible within eight hours and determine whether the tick carries the Borrelia bacteria. Treatment is most successful if started immediately after identifying the tick bite. Pathogens A tick can cause serious problems. That s because, when sucking the blood, the tick can transfer viruses, bacteria, parasites, and even poison. If the tick is stunned (with alcohol) or heated (with a cigarette), it goes into shock and responds by releasing pathogens into the body through its saliva. And the quality of the water that is available is not always of a high standard everywhere in the world. Poor hygienic conditions when travelling often result in stomach and intestinal infections, travellers diarrhoea, or dehydration. Water purification Drinking water can be contaminated with microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses or chemically polluted with agricultural chemicals and heavy metals, for example. Tap water in Western Europe and North America is of good quality. Elsewhere in the world, however, we recommend taking additional measures to purify drinking water. It is also important to purify the water in the water tank of a caravan or camper. Our Hadex is a drinking water disinfection system that deactivates viruses and bacteria. Hadex has no effect on protozoa (single-celled organisms). The use of Care Plus Hadex is recommended where there are concerns about the bacteriological reliability of drinking water from taps, springs, and wells that is intended in principle for consumption.
