9 The price is exceptional for what you get, as this is an 850 fill power down with a Pertex Quantum shell, which makes it very lightweight. Many winter walkers need a cosy layer they can stash in their packs and throw on as needed, and this jacket fulfils that brief well. It uses 850+ fill power down so it is reasonably warm, but it is also exceptionaly light as this is combined with a Pertex Quantum shell. The hood has drawcords, and you get two zipped pockets. It feels very comfortable. Down does provide good insulation without obvious cold spots and it is certainly suitable for general winter use by walkers and campers. Available in Summer and Winter options the Criterion Expander Baffle is made from the same high quality materials and down used in all our sleeping bags. 32 FABRICS Criterion only uses Pertex branded fabrics in the production of all our sleeping bags and clothing. Pertex offers a market leading range of quality fabrics to suit different activities and needs, ranging from lightweight, highly breathable, water resistant, down proof and many other features. As such we have only ever used Pertex, when using the highest quality downs, why not use the highest quality fabrics as well? Currently Criterion uses three types of Pertex fabrics, Quantum, Microlight and Endurance. All have been chosen to make our products as effective as possible for the activities they have been designed for. This is a light weight (<35g/m2) and strong fabric which has high abrasion resistance. Quantum s softness allows the Polish goose down in Criterion sleeping bags to have more loft, thus working more efficiently. Pertex Quantum 52g/m² was formerly called Pertex Microlight and is a well balanced all round fabric offering low weight (< 60g/m2) whilst maintaining good strength and abrasion resistance. Pertex Quantum Pro was formerly called Pertex Endurance and incorporates an ultra-thin air permeable coating that is both highly breathable, water and wind resistant. This layer protects the insulation material from the elements to maintain loft and retain warmth.

33 DOWNQUALITY Down is a natural, thermal-insulation product. It is grown by birds that live in cold climates enabling them to survive severe weather conditions. The best down is found on birds who spend their winters in arctic or sub-arctic conditions. Down, unlike normal feathers, grows without a hard central stalk or quill. In mature birds it forms a soft, fluffy insulating underlayer close to the body beneath the bird s main feathers. Goose down, due to its warmth to weight, is considered to be of a much superior quality than down from other birds, and Polish goose down is recognised world-wide as being of the highest quality. This is due to the long cold Polish winter and extensive research into breeding techniques over many centuries. Our down is collected in accordance with European law where it is illegal to live pluck animals. Measuring Down Quality: Down to Feather Ratio Down is never used wholly on its own and manufactures show the amount of down and feathers in a ratio, such as 85:15 with the first number being the percentage amount of down and the second being the amount of feathers. The higher the amount of down the higher the quality of insulation. All Criterion products use either a 92:8 fill or 96:4. Measuring Down Quality: Fill Power Manufactures use the term Fill Power (FP) to denote down s insulating properties, the higher the number the better the insulation and the lower the weight of down needed. In our sleeping bags we use fill powers of 680+ and our Diamond Quality 870FP Down. In our clothing we use Diamond Quality 850+ FP down. Diamond Grade White Goose Down Our Diamond Grade down is the ultimate in luxury which provides insulating warmth with low weight. Diamond Grade White Goose Down has a fill power of 870 and down to feather ratio of 96:4. It is currently used in our Prime, Expedition and Quantum ranges FP Grey Goose Down Our Standard Grey Goose Down has a fill power of 680+ and down to feather ratio of 92:8, Standard down is used in our Ultralight, Lady and Traveller ranges.

34 BAFFLEDESIGN Criterion Sleeping Bags Criterion Sleeping bags make use of the most up to date manufacturing methods, ensuring that our bags have optimum warmth to weight ratios. Using the best quality down we can source is only one part in the process of providing our superior quality products. Down is an excellent insulator and our sleeping bags use different baffle structures to offer the optimum performance for the activities that they are designed for. All baffles work in the same way, they allow the down to loft up and trap a layer of air. This in turn is heated by the body heat of the user thus providing the insulation for a comfortable night s sleep. Baffles also prevent down from clumping together and ensure an even distribution of insulation across the whole bag. Criterion sleeping bags make use of three types of baffles, Brick, Boxwall and Trapezoid, to contain the down. The baffles in our sleeping bags are contained between the inner and outer layers of the Ripstop Pertex fabric. All Criterion Sleeping Bags are made with a differential fill, with an approximate split of 60% down on top and 40% on the base. Differential Fill is used in sleeping bag design as the weight of the user s body compresses the base of the bag, the fill whether down or synthetic, will not work as efficiently. As a result manufacturers will offset this by putting more insulation into the top of the bag than the base. All of the bases in Criterion sleeping bags use a Boxwall Baffle construction. Criterion Clothing Criterion clothing uses stitch through baffle manufacturing, this method creates a simple baffle ideal for clothing manufacture.

35 ZIP&COLLARBAFFLES Standard Zip Baffle A full length baffle running the length of the zip, using 680FP down. Seen in our Ultralight models. Ideal for those looking to save weight. Integrated Zip & Neck Baffle Used exclusively in our Quantum models, this full length baffle runs the length of the zip and covers the chest and neck. Made with Pertex Quantum fabric and 870FP Diamond Grade Down, this is an ideal combination of weight saving and heat retention in an ultra lightweight bag. Separate Zip Baffle & Neck Collar Used in our 3 to 4 season Traveller and Prime ranges our separate zip and neck collar system, offers a full length zip baffle, with a fully independent and adjustable down filled upper and lower neck collar with Velcro fastening and differential fill. Baffle and collar fill power is either 680FP (Traveller) or 870FP (Prime). Separate Zip & Neck Collar with Fleece Footbox Only available in our Lady range this 680FP offers a full length zip baffle, with fleece lined footbox for added insulation and comfort. A independent and adjustable full neck collar insulated with down traps air and can be used open or closed. Double Zip Baffle, with Neck Collar and Hood Baffle Exclusive to our range of Expedition bags, this system consists of two full length zip baffles and a fully adjustable down filled neck collar. An additional down baffle on the hood allows it to be drawn tighter protecting the face from the elements. All down is 870FP.

36 CAREGUIDE Storing Your Criterion Sleeping Bag At Home: Store your down sleeping bag in a clean and dry area. Store your Criterion sleeping bag in the mesh storage sack provided or hang in a wardrobe via your bags hanging loops. Do not store your sleeping bag in a stuff sack or compression sack. Always dry out your bag at home after every trip before storing it away, never put a damp bag into storage. Using Your Criterion Sleeping Bag: Remove your sleeping bag carefully from its stuff sack up to 1 hour before use. A gentle shake will help ensure the down is fully lofted to its potential and will help to maximize warmth retention. A good quality sleeping mat is essential and will provide comfort and insulation. Always use a sleeping bag liner made from fabric such as cotton/ poly-cotton, silk or fleece. It will protect the down and inner fabric from perspiration and body oils, both of which can inhibit down loft and warmth. A liner will also act as an insulation layer potentially making the bag a little warmer. Liners are easy to clean and will reduce the amount of times your down sleeping bag will need to be washed Washing Your Criterion Sleeping Bag: Criterion down sleeping bags can either be cleaned at home or by a professional cleaning company. Washing At Home 1. Mix a down cleaning product such as Nikwax down cleaner or pure soap flakes with up to half a bath of warm water. 2. Immerse the whole sleeping bag in the water and gently agitate to ensure the entire sleeping bag is thoroughly wet. 3. Gently agitate every 5 minutes for up to half an hour. 4. Drain water from bath and refill. 5. Repeat processes 2 & 3 until all down cleaner has been removed, then allow to drain. 6. Gently roll the bag (still in bath) to remove excess water. 7. Dry in a tumble dryer on low heat until down is completely dry. This may take several hours. Please Note: Always handle wet down products with care. Excess dryer heat can damage down and shell fabrics. Always ensure down is completely dry before storing. Criterion sleeping bags consist of a set of baffles/chambers which contain down. The side edges of some of the baffle chambers are not fully stitched but are stitched at the top and bottom. This allows very small amounts of lofted down to move between chambers. As down is a natural product, with each cluster being individual, this construction method helps the down in the chambers to equalise allowing optimum fill within each chamber. When down is wet it clumps together into balls which could pass through these gaps if the sleeping bag is not handled with great care when wet.
