Our Mission To enhance our community by providing outstanding services, parks and facilities through environmental, social and financial stewardship Our Vision To be recognized as a national leader in delivering innovative park and recreation services based on responsiveness, trust, and accountability to our community Camp Philosophy We are dedicated to providing safe and active learning opportunities that promote teamwork, friendship and fun. Through individual successes and group challenges, campers develop a strong sense of self-confidence, while creating memories that can last a lifetime. Camp Staff Camp Site Directors are chosen for their maturity and experience working with children. Many of the directors are teachers or have backgrounds in education; all have CPR/AED Certification. Directors report to Recreation Supervisors. Our Site Directors receive director training, in addition to all-staff training sessions. Camp Site Directors and Counselors receive extensive Northbrook Park District training, which covers safety, leadership, behavior management, developmentally appropriate activities, diversity and emphasizing learning through cooperative play. They also receive pool safety training. The District maintains the following staff-camper ratios: 1:6 for Camp Sunshine, Pee Wee Sports Camp 1:8 for Kaleidoscope Kids, Limelighters Workshop, Little Champions, Northbrook Explorers, and Survival Camp 1:10 for Artistic Adventures, Athletic Adventures, Beyond the Bell, Extended Care, Skate and Dance Camp, Sports Mania, Teen Trailblazers, and Theatre Arts Workshop 2

Camper Code of Conduct Behavior Campers are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Our guidelines help ensure that programs are safe and enjoyable for everyone. We expect campers, parents and volunteers to: Respect staff, volunteers and other campers Cooperate, participate positively and follow the rules Show respect for equipment, supplies and facilities The Camper Code of Conduct is printed on the back of the Participant Information Form. Please review it with your camper and sign at the bottom of the form. Approach to Discipline Staff will use a direct, positive and progressive approach to discipline and help children develop self-control and learn to assume responsibility for their actions. We use positive statements and reinforcement to redirect negative behavior. Camp staff will discipline children as necessary and notify their parents. We reserve the right to dismiss any participant whose behavior endangers safety or negatively impacts a program or facility. We evaluate each situation independently and document inappropriate behaviors. Staff will discuss negative behavior with the camper and parent or guardian. Recurring or severe behavior problems may lead to suspension or dismissal from camp at the discretion of the Site Director and Supervisor. 3

What forms do I need to submit? 2018 Participant Information Form When Applicable Permission to Dispense Oral Medication Waiver Allergy Action Plan Pickup Plan 2018 Dismissal Plan (third grade and above) Forms are available at the Leisure Center, Northbrook Sports Center, Village Green Center and at nbparks.org. How do I get information? We will communicate urgent information to parents through our text messaging system. Parents are encouraged to provide a cell phone number and on the Participant Information Form, to be used for important updates, such as bus transportation changes. Parents are encouraged to also make sure their registration file is up to date in our registration system. Camp Chatter! Camp Chatter! Visit nbparks.org, and click on Camps on the homepage. Select your camp to view your camp s calendars, newsletters and photos. Camp specific alerts will be noted on this page also. On the Friday before each session begins, camp calendars will be available online, listing swim days, field trips, special lunch days and theme days. This information will help campers dress appropriately and be prepared for activities. If you would like a printed copy of the calendar, notify your counselor. 6

How do I communicate with camp? We encourage open communication with parents. If you have a concern, discuss it with your Counselor and Site Director. Camp-specific cell phone numbers will be distributed the first day of camp. You can also your Site Director at the Camp listed below starting the week of June 11. 10 Frequently Asked Questions Continued How are drop-off and pickup handled? As a courtesy, we allow parents to bring campers 15 minutes before camp starts and return up to 15 minutes after camp ends. If you need to pick up a child early, we ask you to make arrangements in advance and send a note or the camp s Site Director to ensure that the child is ready when you arrive. Early pickup requests should be kept to a minimum to avoid interfering with the camp experience and schedule. The Park District does not provide transportation before or after camp, except for Extended Care campers (only to/from their Extended Care site). To ensure safety at pickup, the District requires a signature from the parent or guardian listed on the Participant Information Form and/ or Pickup Plan Form. If the person picking up the child is not listed on the form, we will not allow the child to leave, unless you have made previous arrangements in writing. During the first three days of each session, camp staff is required to ask for a photo ID during pickup. We cannot allow children to leave unless we see a valid ID. We also may ask for an ID during the summer if we do not recognize an authorized parent or guardian. Dismissal Plan If children are entering third grade or above and you want them to be able to leave camp on their own (by biking or walking), a Dismissal Plan must be filled out by the first day of camp. If staff does not have a Dismissal Plan with a parent s signature, the camper will not be able to leave alone. What if I am late picking up from camp? After the 15-minute extended pickup time has passed, or after 6:30pm for Extended Care, staff will call the emergency number on the camper s form. Parents will be charged a $10 late fee for every 10 minutes (or portion thereof) that they are late. Three late pickups will result in a child s dismissal from the program. 8

Frequently Asked Questions Continued Do campers go on field trips? We carefully plan field trips to enhance the camp experience and announce details in advance. If your child is not going to attend, notify your Site Director. Parents are responsible for campers who do not attend the trips. Children must wear their camp T-shirt on field trip days. Do not send money, unless specified. The Park District provides necessary transportation to and from activities. Golf Camps, GTE and Hockey Training Academy do not participate in field trips. How are campers transported during camp? Campers are bused to the pool, activities and field trips with the District s contracted bus service. The drivers remain the same for the entire summer, which allows them to know our campers and routes. The buses are not air- conditioned, so we ask you to send additional cool drinks on longer trips. How do I keep my child s property safe? Label your child s clothing, camp bags, towels and personal items with your child s full name. Items that are left behind at camp sites have a greater chance of being returned to you if they are labeled. 9

Frequently Asked Questions Continued How can I contact my child? If there is an emergency and you need to speak with your child, call your Site Director on the camp-specific cell phone (numbers are distributed the first day of camp). If you cannot reach the Director, call What if my child is injured at camp? Your Site Director will contact you as soon as possible. If a child is seriously injured and requires more than basic first aid, the Park District will take the following steps: Paramedics will be called. Parents/guardians will be notified about the injury. Paramedics will transport an injured or ill child to the nearest hospital, accompanied by a camp staffer. We want to be able to reach you in case of an emergency. If you are not going to be at your regular daytime phone number, please provide an alternate number (for phone calls only, not texting). What if children are sick? If children are sick or have a fever, do not send them to camp. Call your Site Director or a Registration Office before camp starts to report your child s absence. If a child becomes sick during camp, we will notify a parent and ask that someone pick up the child as soon as possible. If a parent or guardian is not available, staff will call the emergency contact. Campers must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to camp. What if my child needs special assistance? The Northbrook Park District partners with Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) to offer recreation programs and services to residents of all abilities. NSSRA support staff is available to work alongside participants in our camps, assisting with special needs, behavior management, and social and emotional development. Participants requesting support can contact Park District NSSRA liaison Amy Kopecky at or akopecky@nbparks.org. What happens if it rains or is very hot? We hold camp in all weather conditions. All camps have indoor facilities that we can use in case of rain or extreme heat. Our staff is well prepared with a variety of indoor activities that include arts and crafts, sports and games. Text messages will be used to notify parents about extreme weather conditions. 10

Frequently Asked Questions Continued What should children wear to camp? Children should be dressed in comfortable and casual clothing, appropriate for weather conditions, and gym shoes (no sandals or flip flops). Due to safety concerns, participation will be limited if proper clothing is not worn. Children should not wear clothes that could be ruined by grass stains or other activities. We suggest you label camp clothing and accessories. Ice Skating Camps and Hockey Training Academy Skate and Dance Campers and GTE participants should wear nonrestrictive clothing shorts and a T-shirt (for dance class and off-ice activities) and fitted pants and a light jacket or similar attire for skating (no bare legs). Children should not wear a skating dress and tights. Gym shoes are required for the camp day. Ballet slippers, dance shoes or socks are fine for the off-ice dance classes. The Park District supplies rental skates at no charge to campers who need them. Full equipment is required for the Hockey Training Academy. Bring comfortable clothing as well as gym shoes that are appropriate for outside activities and training. Performing Arts Workshops Performing Arts campers should wear nonrestrictive clothing and closetoed shoes. Bring jazz shoes or sneakers for dance. 11

Frequently Asked Questions Continued 12 Do children need to be toilet trained? Children must be toilet trained by the start of camp. Our staff attempts to prevent accidents by encouraging frequent bathroom breaks. We allow pull-ups, but staff cannot change them. Our procedures are as follows: First and second accident: Parent must come to camp within 30 minutes to change the child. Third accident: Parent must pick up the child, who will be released from the remaining portion of the session. What about germs and hand-washing? To avoid the spread of germs and allergens, campers are asked to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer upon arrival at camp, before lunch/ snack, and after using the bathroom. What about allergies and medication at camp? Although all our camp programs are nut-free, the buildings housing the camps may not be. Our staff attends CPR training, which also includes the use of EpiPens, Auvi-Q and other medication. If your child has allergies, make sure you have filled out an Allergy Action Plan and have discussed your child s allergies with your camp director and/or counselor. If your child takes medication during the day or may need to, make sure you have filled out a Permission to Dispense Oral Medication Waiver and have discussed your child s medication with your camp director and/or counselor. Only oral medication will be dispensed. Do campers receive a snack? The Park District provides nut-free snacks to the following programs: Camp Sunshine, Extended Care Camps, Kaleidoscope Kids, Little Champions, Northbrook Explorers, Pee Wee Sports Camp, and Skate and Dance Camp. If your child has dietary restrictions or food allergies, complete the allergy form, notify camp staff, and send an appropriate snack that is also nut-free. Should I send a lunch to camp? With the exception of special lunch or cookout days (indicated on calendars), campers should bring lunch and a drink each day with their full name on the lunch bag. For the safety of campers with severe allergies, our camp programs are nut-free. If children bring lunches that contains nuts, their parents will be notified. Lunches will be refrigerated, except on field trip days, when children should bring a lunch that does not need refrigeration. If you would like to pre-order lunch for your child you may do so through Kiddos. Details about the hot lunch program are included with the mailing of this handbook.

Frequently Asked Questions Continued How do I order lunch for my camper? Kiddos Catering will deliver lunches to the following camps: Artistic Adventures, Athletic Adventures, Beyond the Bell (6/18-7/11), Camp Sunshine, Getting the Edge, Kaleidoscope Kids, Limelighters Workshop, Little Champions, Northbrook Explorers, Pee Wee Sports Camp, Skate and Dance Camp, Sports Mania, Survival Camp, Teen Trailblazers, and Theatre Arts Workshop. JCAs can order lunch by registering for the camp they are assigned to. Find out more about the lunch program in our Kiddos flyer available at nbparks.org or at any Registration Office. Who will be in my child s group? Camp groups are determined by age, school and ratio of boys and girls. Most groups are co-ed, but some may consist of all girls or boys, depending on enrollment. The group and counselor may change in the second camp session, adding variety to the camp experience. Skating and hockey participants are grouped by ability. One of the advantages of camp is the opportunity to meet people and make new friends. If your child has friends who are attending the same camp, there are many opportunities throughout the day for them to be together, even if they are not in the same group. These opportunities include pool time, lunch, special events and shared activities. 13

Frequently Asked Questions Continued Are pictures and videos taken at camp? The Park District will photograph and/or videotape campers for promotional purposes; those materials are the property of the District. Performing Arts Workshops will receive a DVD of their show. No outside photographs, videotaping or recording is allowed during performances, due to copyright laws. What is the sunscreen policy? Since most of the camp day is spent outside, we ask parents to apply sunscreen and bug spray before children arrive at camp. Northbrook Park District staff can assist with the reapplication of sunscreen to exposed skin (face, top of ears, neck, bare shoulders, arms and legs). Assistance may include assigning a buddy, verbal instruction or assistance by staff in applying sunscreen to exposed skin. Sunscreen will be treated as medication and will be applied only if you provide the sunscreen and grant permission to apply sunscreen on the Participant Information Form. Sunscreen must be in the original container and labeled with the child s full name. Sunscreen will be applied only according to directions on sunscreen bottle. If children do not have sunscreen or permission was not granted for help with reapplication, staff will keep them in a shaded area, wearing a shirt and hat, and/or drastically reduce their time outside. 14

Do children swim at camp? Campers have the opportunity to swim at least one day each week, with the exception of Extended Care, Awesome August and Summer Warm-Up. We provide structured swim lessons for Camp Sunshine (M-F participants), Pee Wee Sports Camp (M-F participants), Little Champions, and Kaleidoscope Kids. Older campers have recreational swim time as listed. Getting the Edge have an after-camp swim pass option. Remember to send a swimsuit and towel on scheduled swim days. Open swim time depends on the weather. We heat our pools to 80 degrees. Due to scheduling conflicts, if a swim lesson is missed or cancelled, it cannot be made up. The Park District offers additional swim lessons for all ages and skill levels; check the Summer Recreation Guide for details. Safety is the number one priority of the Northbrook Park District. Campers are supervised by counselors the entire time they are visiting our pools. All campers receive a basic swim test on their first visit to our pools; swim skills are evaluated, and children receive a colored wristband to indicate the level of clearance they have at the pool. Aquatic and camp staff work together to enforce the following wristband levels: Red (non- swimmer) Yellow Green (swimmer) Pool Safety Children s Play Area at Meadowhill Aquatic Center (MAC) and zero-depth area at Northbrook Sports Center Pool (NSC Pool) Main pool at both aquatic facilities and the Children s play areas and Zero Depth areas. All areas of the pool where they meet height requirements* * A green wristband does not mean that children can use the slides. Campers will be measured and must be at least 48 tall to use the slides. See page 16 for color-coded pool areas. 15

Color-Coded Pool Areas Meadowhill Aquatic Center Northbrook Sports Center Pool 2017 Outstanding Facility by Illinois Parks and Recreation Association During the summer of 2017, Northbrook Park District pool staff received a perfect safety rating from Starfish Aquatics Institute.
