4 President s Message by Jim Zuelow (jimzuelow@aol.com) As you probably know by now, our Club lost two very outstanding members earlier this year, George Hall, and Seely Hall, Jr. George was also a noted member of the American Society of Polar Philatelists. You can see part of his outstanding collection of polar covers by going to that organization s excellent website at Seely Hall served our Club in various capacities for many years, most recently as an ACC Director. I had the pleasure of meeting Seely a few years ago at his home in Juneau where he showed me portions of his very extensive Alaskana collections. Our condolences and prayers are extended to the families and friends of George & Seely. Prior to his passing, Seely s Alaska Postal History collection was sold in an H. R. Harmer, Inc. auction on February 23rd, 2005 in New York City. His main postmark collection of between 4,000 and 5,000 covers and cards sold for $32,500 (plus a 15% buyer s premium). Incidentally, this amount tied with that for an extensive collection of US stamps offered in the same auction as the top prices realized. Of the items singled out for individual auction sale, one 1903 Juneau cover (Helbock Type 13 with a damaged E ) sold for the collection s lowest price realized of $ Of the approximately 227 lots, eleven sold for $75.00 each. A 1900 Nome cover fumigated in St. Michaels brought the single item high of $2,600. An 1895 Mitchell, Alaska UX11 Grant postal card sent to England realized $2,100 (it had been estimated at $1,500 to $2,000). Dave Schwantes also informed me during a recent visit to Tucson that Eric Knapp was the successful bidder on Seely s Alaska postal history book and reference collection! Another noted member and officer of our Club, Dirk van Gelderen, recently offered approximately 300 lowerpriced Alaska items on an e-bay Auction. Each item carried a link to our initial ACC website at nl/. Thank you for the publicity, Dirk! Several other ACC members, including Dr. Michael Senta, and Steve Sims have also been offering Alaska postal items on e-bay auctions. Dirk van Gelderen has suggested that we include the current ACC auction and a bid sheet on our website. Bids would be accepted from members only. What do YOU think about this proposal? Jim Zuelow Secretary-Treasurer s Report by Eric Knapp Discoveries where I didn t expect them It was an early spring and is shaping up to be a nice summer here. I have been trying to get out and get more exercise on my bike this year. One of the unexpected side effects of this is I am discovering parts of Anchorage I really didn t know before and I am refining parts that I used to know. There are many areas that I drive through without really thinking about that become very interesting when I ride through them. I have stopped and read more signs than I have in a long time. I have had a similar experience with my collection recently. I have been sorting out a couple of get to them someday boxes and have found several interesting things that I did not know I had. I have decided that rediscovery is almost as good as discovery. Just take it a little slower and be willing to stop and you never know what you will find. Now on to club business. I have no new members to report but dues collection for 2005 is going well. The following people have made donations above and beyond their normal dues: Caye Carufel and Jim Zuelow. Financially the club is in good shape. I have one more sad thing to report. Longtime member Mort Turner passed away in May of last year. His wife Joanne reported this with her dues renewal. She wishes to continue as a member for at least one more year and we have honored that request. The sympathies of the whole club go out to Mort s family. 5 In Memory of George A. Hall from the Anchorage Daily News Well-known Alaska historian George A. Hall, 81, died April 6, 2005, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A celebration of his life will be at 6 p.m. April 25 at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Hall was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Chicago. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a radio operator aboard a B-29 during World War II until his discharge in Hall graduated from Drake University in 1948 and, in 1953, moved to Sitka. Already a collector of historic material, he immersed himself in the history of the region and in 1957 joined the National Park Service as the first historian of the Sitka National Historic Park. He worked on the St. Michael s Cathedral restoration, the reconstruction of the Russian Blockhouse, was instrumental in preserving many totem poles and house fronts and worked closely with the Tlingit people to ensure that their history was included as part of the Park Service s permanent record. Because of his work with the Tlingit, he was adopted into Kiksadi clan by elder Alex Andrews and given the name, Shuk Sha Ni Ish -- mountain, bird, person. In 1967, Hall was named state coordinator of national parks and superintendent of Mount McKinley National Park. There, he worked with climbers Ray Genet and Vin Hoeman to keep the mountain open to climbing and received an honorary lifetime membership in the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. In 1970, Hall joined the State Division of Parks as deputy director, retiring in That year, he began his third career as an insurance and investment broker, first with Benefit Brokers and later as a partner in Tax Deferral Associates, from which he retired in Hall helped organize Anchorage s first Walk for Hope, serving for many years on the board of Hope Cottages Inc., and helped establish the Foundation of the Arc of Anchorage. He was a founding member of the Alaska Historical Society and served as its executive director from 1967 to He also was active with the Cook Inlet Historical Society and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. He was an avid collector of philatelic material and was a founding member of the American Society of Polar Philatelists and member of the Chicago Philatelic Society, the American Philatelic Society and the Anchorage Philatelic Society. He was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Western Alaska Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Hall is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eileen; brother, Cliff; daughter and son-in-law, Gerianne and John Thorsness; son and daughter-in-law, Andy Hall and Melissa DeVaughn Hall; son, Kevin Hall; daughter, Marietta Hall; and grandchildren, Sophie, Annie, Kaiya and Henry Thorsness and Roan and Reilly Hall. We have been friends ever since. George is someone I am proud to call a mentor. His gentle encouragement moved me into the ranks of advanced collectors and I think anything I have done as an exhibitor I can credit to George saying, You can do it. I am going to miss him. 6 A Modern Error Cancel Reported by Eric Knapp reported by Laslo Hanko Laszlo Hanko from Kodiak has discovered an error cancel at the U.S. Coast Guard CPU station there. It is a double circle cancel, which should read KODIAK AK, USCG CPU but instead reads KODIAK AK, USGG CPU. As you can see in the attached picture, it is defiantly an error in production and not debris on the canceling device. The 2 G s are the same. Mr. Hanko did report this mistake to the postmaster at the station and presumably the cancel has been replaced. It just goes to show that mistakes still happen. New Type of Juneau Cancel reported by Steve Sims New Juneau Type cancel. Roller Bars plus a rare COD usage on a 6 ¾ envelope. In Memory of Seely Hall, Jr. from The Juneau Empire Born December 26th, 1923 in Medford Oregon to Seely and Vera Hall, descendant of Rogue River Valley pioneer families. He attended numerous grade and high schools in Oregon, Washington, California and Illinois, returning to Medford to graduate. He enrolled at Stanford but left to serve in the 507th fighter group of the 9th Air Force in the European Theatre Operations as a radar technician. Upon discharge, he re-entered Stanford, leaving to enter the banking field. In 1949 he vacationed in Alaska and obtained a position with the Union Bank of Anchorage, now the First National Bank Alaska (FNB). In 1950, he married his wife Helen, they were together for 47 years. He was with FNB for 38 years serving in Anchorage, Seward, Sitka and Juneau. His family lost their home in Seward in the 1964 Quake. While in Seward for 11 years he served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Library Board. He aided in formation of the Resurrection Bay Historical Society and served on various restoration committees following the earthquake. His family was in Sitka at the time St. Michael s cathedral burned and served on groups dedicated to its restoration. While in all locations with FNB, Helen and Seely actively served the Alaska Music Trails. He studied art in grade and high school as well as the Chicago Art Institute, Stanford, California School of Arts & Crafts and U of A Juneau. He and Helen established a line of notepaper featuring his pencil drawings while in Anchorage, as well as original pencil drawings. Upon retirement, he again entered the art field in earnest and became a member of a succession of artists co-ops ending with the Juneau Artists Gallery Ltd. He was an active stamp collector since early childhood, but began concentrating on Alaskan postal history in 1950 in Anchorage. He was a founding member and past president of the Anchorage Philatelic Society and held an honorary membership. Had served as an officer of the Gastineau Philatelic Society and was a life member and held the offices of President and Director of the Alaska Collectors Club. He was a life member of the American Philatelic Society, joining in He both exhibited and designed cacheted envelopes for both Alaskan Clubs as well as writing articles for various philatelic publications. He and Helen collected Alaskan and Russian art and artifacts and were avid gardeners. He is survived by daughter Janet Hall-Sanchez, Anaheim, CA, and Theresa, Selina & Alysa Sanchez, granddaughters, Anaheim, CA; and Owen Hall, brother, Redmond, WA. 2nd Quarter 2005 The Alaskan Philatelist Page 18

7 Gold Nugget The fair sex was not exempt from gold fever - one out of ten stampeders was a woman. Journalist Annie Hall Strong offered some advice for women headed to the Klondike. Her article, Hints to Women, first appeared in the December 31, 1897, edition of the Skaguay News and was reprinted in newspapers around the country. She wrote that women have made up their minds to go to the Klondike, so there is no use trying to discourage them. Speaking for the female stampeders, Strong boasted that when our fathers, husbands and brothers decided to go, so did we, and our wills are strong and courage unfailing. We will not be drawbacks nor hindrances, and they won t have to return on our account. Strong herself had been one of those who contracted what she termed acute Klondicitis. She arrived in Skagway in the late summer of Over a thousand women crossed over the Chilkoot or White Pass trail between 1896 and Women went into the Klondike with male relatives and on their own. Some who traveled alone signed on to cook and clean for groups of men in return for help in moving their provisions across the passes and down the Yukon River. Editor s Request I hate to keep harping on this, but my file of original articles is empty again. I need every member of the club to look at their collection and find those things they can write about. Everybody has something in his or her collection, some experience, or just a good tale that you could tell us about. Please take an hour or two and write something for the journal. Thank you! 8 From Sheldon Point to Nunam Iqua by Eric Knapp inspired by Dirk van Gelderen Club member Dirk van Gelderen ed me a few weeks ago asking if I had ever heard of a town called Nunam Iqua in Alaska. He had purchased a cover lot that contained a cancel form this town. I had to admit that I hadn t. I put looking into it on my to do list. In the meantime, Dirk did some more research and found that this was the new name of the Bering Sea town of Sheldon Point. The town has voted to change the name in November The following information about the town is from the website Nunam Iqua is on a south fork of the Yukon River, about 9 miles south of Alakanuk and 18 miles southwest of Emmonak on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. It lies 500 miles northwest of Anchorage. It lies at approximately North Latitude and West Longitude. (Sec. 10, T028N, R084W, Seward Meridian.) Nunam Iqua is located in the Bethel Recording District. The area encompasses 13.2 sq. miles of land and 5.3 sq. miles of water. The climate is maritime, averaging 60 inches of snowfall with a total of 18 inches of precipitation per year. Temperatures range from -25 to 78. Heavy winds in the fall and winter often limit accessibility. The Bering Sea is ice-free from mid-june through October. Nunam Iqua was historically the location of summer fish camps, due to its location near the Black River. In Yup ik, the name means end of the tundra. A man called Sheldon owned and operated a fish saltery at the site in the late 30s and early 40s. The saltry was later operated by Northern Commercial Company. The village was first measured in 1950 by the U.S. Census, which recorded a population of 43 residents. The City of Sheldon Point was formed in In November 1999, residents voted to change their name to the City of Nunam Iqua. A federally recognized tribe is located in the community the Native Village of Sheldon Point. 93.9% of the population are Alaska Native or part Native. Commercial fishing and subsistence activities are the means of support in this Yup ik Eskimo village. 10 Iditarod XXXIII by David Schwantes It is hard to believe that it has been thirtythree years since the first Iditarod Race from Anchorage to Nome in This year s race was a great example of what this race has become. Even though it has been run thirtythree times, the race had a number of firsts, just like most of the other races. The race began on a nice sunny Saturday, March 5, Seventy-nine mushers made their way to the starting line that morning, and began their way out of town and on their way to Nome. Although the start in Anchorage is just a ceremonial start, it is one of the toughest parts of the race for most of the mushers. Getting out of town without any problems is not always easy. The dogs are not used to all the people and the city streets. The mushers try to keep it low keyed and slow. Most have two sleds behind the team going out of Anchorage. One of them carries the Idita-rider, and the other is just to keep the team from going too fast. Some of the numbers of this year s race are as follows. The total number of mushers who signed up was 102. Twenty-three withdrew before the start of the race, leaving seventy-nine mushers leaving Anchorage on the morning of March 5th. Sixteen mushers scratched during the race, and sixty-three completed the last great race. Of the seventy-nine starting mushers, 52 were from Alaska, 19 from other states, and nine from foreign countries. There were 29 rookies and 50 veterans, and sixty-three males and 16 females. The warm weather made the trail less than desirable and caused sickness in many of the teams. The sixteen teams that scratched included long-times veterans Bill Cotter, Sonny Lindner, Jacques Philip and Charlie Boulding. Also, for the first time in his twentynine Iditarod races, Rick Swenson scratched for the first time. Robert Sorlie of Norway won his second Iditarod in three attempts, arriving in Nome on March 16, He ran his first Iditarod in 2002, winning the rookie of the year award, then won the race in He sat out the 2004 race and then returned this year for his second victory. Ed Iten of Kozebue ran his best race ever, finishing second. Last year s champion Mitch Seavey of Seward finished third, followed by Bjormar Anderson, also of Norway who was this year s rookie of the year. Fifth place went to Ramy Brooks of Healy. Most of the press at the beginning of the race centered around officially blind musher Rachel Scdoris of Oregon, and then six days before the start of the race, four-time champion, Martin Buser, had an accident with a power saw, which resulted in one-third of his middle finger being amputated. Most thought he would not be racing this year, but come race day, he was at the starting line. He wound up finishing in thirteenth place. Rachel Scdoris did not complete the race, but she was sure everyone knew that it had nothing to do with her eyes, but like many of the other mushers, she scratched due to the sickness of her dogs. This year s race included the first officially blind musher, and the first time Rick Swenson scratched in twenty-nine races. It also contained another first. This was the first year in which a musher ran in both the Iditarod Race and the Junior Iditarod Race. Dallas Seavey, son of Mitch, and brother of Tyrell, turned eighteen the day before this year s race. He ran the Junior Race the week before as a seventeen-year-old, and then entered the big

11 Iditarod XXXIII, continued from page 22 race the next week. He finished in fifty-first place, making him the youngest person to complete the race. Dallas is also the grandson of Dan Seavey who ran in the first two races back in 1973 and Dan has run the race a few other times too. There are five covers from this year s race that I am aware of. The official Iditarod Trail Mail cover shown in (figure 1) was carried by one of the fan favorites, DeeDee Jonrowe. Because of the size of the cachet, and the size of the stamp, the circle cancel was used instead of one of the special cancels usually used. Four-time winner, Martin Buser, used the theme Strive for 5 in 05 for this year s race. His cover is shown in (figure 2), and is canceled at the start of the race, and the day he arrived in Nome. It used one of the special cancels. Paul Gebhardt continues to carry his own cover each year, and (figure 3) shows his cover, also canceled with one of the special cancels. (Figure 4) show the 33rd cover from my personal set. It is canceled on the day of the race, and back-canceled in Nome on the day the winner arrived. I made one other cover for this year s race. This year s race was the 25th running for John Barron. He ran his first Iditarod in 1979, and has run most of them since. John has finished as high as 11th. Two of his sons have also run the Iditarod, and his youngest son is a sprint racer. John finished in 31st place. His cover shown in (figure 5) is canceled the day he arrived in Nome with the third of the three special cancels available for use. This was my sixteenth year to the finish line in Nome. Although I spend a lot of time at the post office canceling the official mail, and also the other covers I am involved with, there is still plenty of spare time. People wonder what the visitors do while they are waiting for the mushers to arrive. Nome has worked hard to provide many things to do. During Iditarod time there is a basketball, dart, and golf tournament, a craft fair, a fine arts show, Iditarod slide shows, creative memories workshop, Eskimo dancing, and the mushers autograph party. There are also eating events such as a halibut fish fry, a reindeer stew dinner, and a reindeer potluck. The big event that ends Iditarod are the banquets. The Awards Banquet is always the Sunday after the winner arrives. The mushers who are still on the trail have a banquet of their own after the Red Lantern winner arrives.
