Newsround Autumn After the Summer activities I am sure we are all looking forward to getting our dancing shoes on again. And what better way to start the new season than by attending the Costume Ball which will be held at Heswall Hall on October 6 th featuring the Pemberley Players, with dancing master Reg Battle. Any remaining tickets can be booked directly by going on line to Heswall Hall. Last December we attended a special dance at Bebington in which the MC Brendan Morrison re-created the programme of dances from the Bebington Christmas dance which was held 50 years previously. It was at that dance, 50 years ago, that Brendan met his future wife Sue. Who needs Love Island. Not quite so romantic this year s dance features MC Hilary Vare from London with music from the brilliant Chris and Julie Dewhurst. What do you do if the MC you have booked for your dance has a heart attack on the afternoon of the dance? Fortunately Maria, with the help of Maureen Waddington and the wonderful and versatile band Knotted Chord were able to provide an excellent dance which was enjoyed by all who attended. Interval entertainment was provided by the marvellous Mockbeggar Ladies North West Morris Team who I am sure helped to boost numbers attending the dance. Just shows you have to be prepared for every eventuality. Happily Rhodri Davies has recovered and will be at Contra along with Knotted Chord on the 9 th March next year. See advert for details. The former Lancashire Band Workshop, which now meets monthly on Sunday mornings at Rainford Village Hall through the Autumn, Winter and Spring lives on after a period of decline. A dedicated, but smallish group of musicians play music which is provided in turn by members of the group. They have two bookings in the Autumn and are happy to consider playing for small scale events such as club nights and small parties. They have their own caller but would be happy to work with club callers, and would require only expenses and a donation which would help to boost their funds. New members are welcome. Music is provided if needed. See diary dates for details or contact Mary on Chris Warrington July 2018

ST HELENS FDC RIP. It is with great sadness that we received the news that St. Helens Folk Dance Club has decided to close after 67 years. It almost feels like a death in the family. St. Helens were one of the clubs who re-formed in the immediate post second world war years and have been a vibrant, lively and well attended club until they gradually fell into decline which resulted in their members voting to close the club. We have fond memories of attending their club charity nights and attending their many dances which were always happy occasions (who can forget the warm welcome we received and of course the wonderful hot pot and lovely homemade cakes). Sadly St. Helen s demise is not unique as lots of well established clubs up and down the country are struggling with falling numbers and an aging membership. I am sure we can all put forward reasons for this decline but for what it is worth I think the root of the problem stems from the inability of clubs to react to changing and ever more challenging times. These days there are more people than ever looking for activities to fill their leisure time during their middle years. Dancing, and in particular folk dancing, fits the bill perfectly. So why are we not attracting and in particular retaining new members? A former work colleague told me once that sales and marketing are all about finding out what people want and providing goods and services which match their needs and also constantly updating your offer as people s needs change. When we look back over the history of our clubs up until the recent past we see a very healthy picture. So why the decline? In my view we are simply not providing potential new members with what they are looking for. I am sorry to say the music and dance programmes provided at some clubs has not changed very much in the last 20 or 30 years and what is worse is the methods of teaching are still far too authoritarian and judgemental which are all guaranteed to deter new comers. I am sorry if I sound blunt and may have ruffled a few feathers but the stark reality is that we need to have a long hard look at what we do and make whatever changes we think are necessary sooner rather than later if we are to reverse the decline in our clubs. Maybe the thought of extinction may concentrate our minds. I hope so. Chris Warrington May 2018.

TED AND JOSIE HARNDEN Many of us will have fond memories of Ted and Josie Harnden who both played a major part both participating in and promoting folk music and dance on Mersey and Deeside. Josie was a marvellous dancer who was just as happy in clogs as she was when wearing her country dancing shoes. After a distinguished career in the Royal Navy Ted developed an interest in folk dance and became an excellent dance caller with a wide and varied repertoire of dances, some of which were his own compositions. A few months ago I received an from Kathryne Maher, Ted and Josie s daughter, who asked if I knew the whereabouts of Ted s archive of dances as the family were keen that Ted s original compositions should not be lost and should be part of Ted s lasting legacy. After some detective work Kathryne now has copies of most of Ted s compositions and has passed on copies to a friend who has used some of them at her newly formed dance club in East Sussex. Some of Ted s dances also found their way to the Bebington group after the Upton

group closed and regularly form part of their Tuesday evening club nights. Kathryne no longer lives locally, nor does her brother who lives in Australia or her sister who now lives in the Scottish Highlands. Sadly they had another brother who passed away about 18 months ago. The family have given MAD Folk permission for copies of Ted s dances to form part of a section on the MAD Folk website which will include dances composed locally. During a conversation with Mary, our Chairman, I learnt that lots of dances have been composed over the years by local people. Some for special occasions and some just to provide interest to the dancing community. In order to preserve these dances for the benefit of the wider dancing community we are considering putting a section on our MAD Folk web site. I will ask clubs to donate dances and suggested music. We may also have links to other dance resources to help in particular new callers who wish to build up their repertoire. I stress, donating dances is entirely voluntary and we will make strenuous efforts to avoid infringing copyright laws. If we look at the Full English Section of the EFDSS web site we see archive materials collected and preserved for future generations i.e. us. I would like to think that the modern day generation has a worthwhile legacy to pass on to future dancers. I hope so. Chris Warrington.

GDPR - Data Protection. I often wonder whether life would be a lot simpler without the Internet. The rapid rise of the Internet and more recently social media has been largely unregulated. This has allowed unscrupulous organisations to take, use and exploit personal data including addresses, shopping habits, political preferences and so on. In an attempt to regulate these activities the much maligned EU is in the process of introducing new data protection regulations part of which requires organisations to obtain clients permission to retain their personal data. We send out MAD News and a regular what s on this month to almost a hundred people currently on our list. Cathy, who sends out the s, is in the process of contacting all recipients and asking them whether they agree that their addresses should remain on our list and therefore continue to receive MAD News by . As secretary I have a data base which includes contact information which I use to compile MAD News. As yet I am not sure whether I need to seek permission to retain that information. In general I welcome the new data protection regulations. New technology has enhanced our lives and brought with it many benefits but without adequate regulation it can be exploited and used to do harm to vulnerable people who find themselves drawn into situations which can rapidly spiral out of control. I am sure things will settle down in time and we will all see the benefits of protecting our personal data. At present there appears to be more questions than answers but I am confident workable arrangements will be found. Watch this space. Chris Warrington, May 2018.
