My Boston Trip June 2008 by Thomas Carbone Wednesday Today after a good breakfast, we went to Plymouth and went on the Mayflower 2. I learned that the pilgrims came to Massachusetts because they wanted to have their own rights but, they couldn t back in Leichen, Holland. I also learned that that the 1 st Mayflower was built when Queen Elizabeth was alive, and the only way that the pilgrims stowed their food was by covering it with salt then storing it in a room where water wouldn t make the food rot. During the tour we saw people who dressed up like the pilgrims and answered questions, that people ask. I was also surprised to see a man taking people on horse drawn carriage rides around town. While we were on our way to see statues up on a hill, we stopped at a gift shop and my dad bought some taffy, and I liked it a lot. The statue was of an Indian, and the others were plaques, memorials for the dead pilgrims, and a tomb. Then we went back to the car and went to the Plymouth Plantation. This place has the real villages of the Indians, and Pilgrims, and people dress as them and answer question like the people back on the Mayflower. Before we went to find the villages we saw a presentation and learned some interesting facts about the Indians and Pilgrims. Some Indian men were actually captured and turned into slaves when the Pilgrims first came to Massachusetts. First we went to the Indian village, and saw many people dressed up as the Indians. I learned that if you had many men you would be able to build your own wooden tent in just about a week. I learned that the basket they hang above their beds was like a cabinet for them, and that they could cook soup, and make tea. Then we went to the pilgrim village, there I saw how the pilgrims, cut wood by putting a giant medal wedge on the log then hitting it with a hammer. There was also a building that was a fort on the top but was a meeting house on the bottom. The houses were small, and one only had one bed. Finally we went to the Nye barn but, we only saw goats in the barn even though there were signs for other animals. Then we went to see the statue of our fore fathers, it was huge. Later tonight after dinner we went to a place called Friendly s for ice cream. I had ice cream that tasted like a birthday cake and I say it was good. Thursday Today we went to Salem and to a store that showed a movie about the Indians, the pilgrims, and people from the 18 th century. When the movie ended we walked to the Witch museum, that told us how people in the 17 th century believed how other people were witches and described what witches did to them. They believed people were witches when 1 girl who was told stories about witches and then accused these certain people to be bewitched. Then they would be thrown in jail and then hung if they were sentenced too. I also learned that witches today are call Wickens but they dress like us and live the same life as us. The only difference is that they celebrate different holidays. Then we went to see a play about one woman who was accused of being a witch. Then we went into a replica of the original dungeon were people that were witches were lock up. While I was in there, one person pretended to be a dummy and scared me, and a lot of other people, by moving. Then we left and went to see the field were the Revolutionary War started. The buildings that were there during the war were gone and were replaced by plaques. One teenager, who was dressed like someone in the Revolutionary War, told us how the war started. It started when the British army captured some men and someone fired one shot at the British army and no one knows today who fired it. We wanted to go to a tavern that was around in that time however, it was closed so we went to a museum that had a part all about the Revolutionary

War. I got to see rifles, and a short movie about certain times during the war, such as The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, how people could buy sugar, and many other stories. Friday Today after eating breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and headed for Long Island. While we were on our way there, we went to 3 places. The first stop was to see a short movie of how, The Revolutionary War started. After the film we looked around for a little while and then went back to Monroe Tavern, the bar that we couldn t go to yesterday. The tavern was one the British army used as a post during The Revolutionary War. Our guide was dressed like a British solider, and actually showed us real outfits of British soldiers, the seat that George Washington sat on, and found out that they had fold up beds in those days. Finally we went to the Lizzy Borden house. The house had videos and books about Lizzy Borden. It also had a kitchen because people can sleep at the house over night. Then we continued our way to Long Island and took a ferry because my dad was too tired to keep drive the rest of the way. The ferry was huge and had a place to get hotdogs, hamburgers, and other things to eat and drink. It was windy outside so I had to sit in a chair. Then we drove to Mommo and Marty s house, had a delicious meal of Chicken Parmesan and spaghetti that Mommo made, and went to sleep. Saturday Today we ate breakfast and went to see my dads old homes and schools. We also went to the cemetery where Mommo s ancestors were buried. Then we went to see Poppo s old house in Queens. I have to admit he grew up in a very nice house in very nice neighborhood but it wasn t that nice anymore. Then we went to Mommo s old house, it was really nice and dad said it looked the same as it looked when he was my age. We even, saw 1 of my dads friends house and dad said it still has a swimming pool. Then we went, to my dads old school he said, his classroom was still the same. We also found a Styrofoam airplane we decided to take it with us. Then we went to see a diner my dad went to as a child, it was next to a butcher shop called Zorn s. We will go to the diner tomorrow for breakfast. My dad said that there used animals that were still alive in Zorn s but, they ran away. Then we went to see if the other house my dad used to live in. It is now owned by people who once let my parent go into it, I was really young so I can t remember anything about it. Then we saw the old store my dad use to shop at and the library, that was next to it was gone and replaced by a CVS/pharmacy. The next place we went to was the nearby lake my dad used to fish at but, it was blocked off. Finally we went to another cemetery to find the graves of Poppos grandparents however, we couldn t find them and went back to Mommo s. Tonight we had relatives come over and I had KFC, coleslaw, and a piece of corn bread. Then we said our goodbyes and went to bed. Sunday Today we left Mommo s house early to get started on our trip to Niagara Falls. We said our goodbyes, and went to the diner we saw yesterday. I had French toast with apple juice. The French toast was soft, and tasted more toasty, and the juice was more watery. There was also a karaoke machine at our table we played the song, I m a believer by the Monkees. After breakfast we drove to a coal mine tour. We got in the mine, by going on a big cart that was moved by rope. While were in the mine we saw a lot of coal, and mining equipment. One thing I didn t know was that the miners used mules in the mine and

kept them there over night in an underground sty. The hardest job was, to open doors for the coal carts and then close them because if the doors were left open, all the air wouldn t go into all of the cave and could cause explosions if there was gas in the air. Another problem was that the kid doing the job would get bored and fall asleep and cause accidents, and they could be in the accident if they fell asleep, in front of door. After the tour, we went to the museum close to the mine. There were many pictures, artifacts, and stories of coal mining, plus there were other stories as well of different subjects. Then we wanted to go to the Harry Houdini museum, but it was closing so we went to our hotel. They had an indoor Pool, Jacuzzi, and ping pong set. We played ping pong, then went in the Jacuzzi, and the Pool. Tonight we went to TGI Friday s, for dinner and went to 2 places before going to see Kung Fu Panda at the drive in theatre. After the movie it started to rain and lightning came down. We return to the hotel and went to bed. Monday Today we were to drive to Niagara Falls, so we spent most of our day on the road. While we were on our way there, we saw a lot of barns, and I learned that the reason, that barns are red is because, in the old times, people painted barns with animal blood. We had to stop 2 times before we made it to our destination. The 1 st stop was at a gas station to use the restroom, and eat our bagels we bought at Long Island. The bagels were more hard than the bagels back home. The 2 nd stop was at McDonald s for ice cream, we had vanilla ice cream, while my mom had iced coffee. When we arrived at Niagara Falls but, my dad only checked us in to the hotel then we went straight to the falls. We went on a boat ride however, we had to wear raincoats because it got rainy near the falls. After the ride we took pictures of ourselves at the falls, then went into the gift shop but, we didn t buy anything and walked on 2 bridges and saw the river. The hotel was awesome, they had cookies on the front desk and a breakfast area. Our room had one bed and a mattress bed but, I liked it. We went to Hard Rock café, the café had many items of famous bands and singers, they even showed music videos of different bands, and singers, Will Smith was on a rap video, and the YMCA song and danced by The Village People was a great hit for everyone in the restaurant. Then we returned to the hotel and watched College Road Trip, and went to sleep. Tuesday Today we traveled to Albany but, we went to a few places first and they were both caverns. The Howe cavern was the first. We had to use an elevator to get to the bottom. Our tour guide showed us a rock that looks, like Godzilla s head. He showed us stalagmites, a giant rock formation that looked like a turtle, a rock that looked like a frozen mouse, and we got our picture taken. Then we went on a boat ride that took us to a 14,000 feet deep waterfall so we went to a part of the cavern were people get married. Before we left we went in a pathway that went from side to side. We bought the picture of us in the cavern, and some chocolate that had brown sugar in it. Then we went to the Secret Caverns. We liked it more because we had a private tour. During the tour, we saw a rock that looked like a monster, a shallow puddle that looked deep, and an underground waterfall. Then we continued our way to Albany. The hotel we stayed at had a ballroom, a restaurant, and a cellar for wine. Our room was on the 1 st floor, it had 2 beds that were comfortable, and the TV was near my bed. Then we went to dinner at the restaurant in the hotel, it actually smelled bad in there because of all the wine. There was also a chef that was near the tables who made dessert. Then after dinner we went to another drive in movie theater, but we had to go to Wal Mart first to by a radio for Rebecca and I to hear the movie. When we arrived the radio broke

so, we stayed inside the car, to hear the movie Get Smart. After the movie we went back to the hotel and went to sleep. Wednesday We are going back to the hotel we stayed in the 1 st few days of our vacation The Residence Inn in Danvers. Before that we decided to go to a few stops. First, we went to a Friendly s and I had 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream with, hot fudge. Then we continued to our next stop which was a place called Gravity Hill where you could put your car in neutral, and the car would move by itself. My dad did it a few times before went to gift shop, next to a tower. We paid to climb the tower and on top you could see Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts all at the same time. The shop had souvenirs and weapons. We couldn t go all the way up the tower because the phone company owned the top, we knew that because there was gate blocking the top. We saw a mini golf course close to but, my parents wouldn t allow us to play. So we went to an Indian store were I got a book called, The Dark Pond. Then we wanted to go to the plastics museum however, it was closed so we went instead and took a picture of ourselves with the worlds largest chair. Then we went to the hotel, our first room that we got when we returned from Albany, smelled like smoke so we checked in to another room. They were serving hot dogs but, we went to TGI Fridays instead for dinner. Tonight I saw a show called Monster Quest, one episode had the Lizzy Borden house, and the other episode about snakes that could eat a human. Then we went to sleep. Thursday Today we went on a walking tour by ourselves. We first saw the Capital building, it had a poster for the NBA, Then we saw the cemetery that, Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Benjamin Franklin were buried at. There was a church close by that was turned into a historical site. The next stop was the street where The Boston Massacre took place, close by was a market nearby a stand were we bought soda, then we went to Paul Revere s house. His house had some of the silver he made, his pistol, and a lot of other things he owned. Then we went to another church that had similar details to the other church. To get to the final stops we had to cross a bridge. We saw a battleship, it was big and was used in World War 2. The main deck had many big guns, and torpedoes. The inside of ship was mostly closed but, I saw the place were the crew ate, and the control room. Then we went to The Bunker Hill Memorial, you were allowed to walk up the huge memorial but, were to tired to walk up it so went to the train station and went back to the hotel. Tonight we went out to have pizza then we called it a day. Friday It was our last full day of vacation in Massachusetts before we go home tomorrow. We went to a small town first and saw the memorials for the people who died in the Revolution, World War 2, and The war on Terror. Then went to the visitor center before seeing a toy store. The toy shop had legos, dolls, toy trains of the kid show Thomas the Tank Engine, and World War 1 and 2, The Revolution, and The Civil War soldiers. Then we went to a cemetery were we saw a graves and a recreation of a grave stone. Our next stop was the Bridge that the British army crossed while the Militia fired at the British from across the river. My mom, and sister went in The Alcott home that belong to the family of Louise

May Alcott who wrote Little Women, my dad and I waited in the car. Before returning to the hotel we got some donuts from Dunkin Donuts. We came back to the hotel early because my sister and I went in the hotel s pool. We met a girl, I forgot her name but, we played in the pool until it was time to get out. We went to Salem for dinner because we were going on a tour of the historical sites and places that were said to be haunted. Our tour guide was dressed up as a sheriff named AJ Blackjack. One of the places that was said to be haunted was Hawthorne hotel, they that there is a ghost of man in room 325. There was another part of the hotel called The Captains Hall that was said to be haunted by a captain. I also heard that the ghost who s last name, was Cory a man who was accused of being a witch got crushed to death by rocks that the sheriff put on him, until he confessed of being a witch but, all he said was More Weight. His ghost is said to float over fire in the graveyard were he was crushed. Another story was that a ghost of a person who murdered a captain in the big house across the street were the tour started. The tour was not only about ghost it was also about history. They showed a few things about such as, the house of the judge that would leave accused people naked and did anything to get them to do anything to say they are a witch there was also the story of Captain Fly who was hung and the old jail that was closed. Finally we went to Friendly s one last time to have ice cream. We enjoyed our vacation and tomorrow we head home. This is my mom, sister, and I in front of the Salem Witch Museum. The museum had wax figures of a women who cured the sick, the witch that is evil, and witches of who they are today. I liked the museum it was interesting. This picture shows us standing in front of the statue of our fore fathers. The weird thing is, the statue is in a large park and there are many houses close to it but, we didn t see many people in the park. This was something to remember because we might have not seen the statue at all.

We were on the Mayflower 2 when this picture was taken. There were 2 people dressed up and acting like people who worked on the ship. These 2 people would answer questions, I was going to ask 1 man a question however, he left before I could ask. During our trip in Plymouth, we spotted a wooden statue that said been there, done that, can t remember. I was in the picture because I m almost like that. I didn t think that a statue would have that written on it.

While were on our way to Long Island we stopped to have the tour of the Lizzy Borden house. The tour guide showed us pictures of Lizzy s parents after they were murdered, and people can sleep at the house over night. After watching Monster Quest I learned that there might be a ghost in the house and it s probably Lizzy s ghost. The man next to us was our tour guide when we were at the Munroe Tavern. They had outfits of British soldiers back in the Revolution, some of George Washington hair, and many other things. I learned that the cannonballs didn t start fire when it landed but, it was still effective back then. Even though we weren t in Canada we did see Niagara Falls. I was amazed that I was looking at the Falls in person. That was one of the best things that ever happen in my life.

This is my sister and I at a drive in movie theater. We were watching Kung Fu Panda because we were having the popcorn that night. I learned that the way people understand the movie is because, they use the radio. Before we found our hotel in Pennsylvania we went into the Lackawanna mine. I never thought that the boss got to relax while the other men and boys worked all day however they always had to make sure everyone left by checking a board that people put there stick in the right place if they left so if a person didn t change it yet they would have to find them. I didn t think that my ancestors would be miners but they were. We were in the Secret Caverns when our tour guide took this picture of us. This was a good tour because were the only ones on the tour. Still I did like The Howe Caverns as well.

Paul Revere was the owner of this bell because, this was taken at his house. He owned a 3 story house but, half the house was gone so there wasn t as third floor on the half we saw. There were many people looking at the house as well. This is our tour guide taking us on the ghost tour. He was a really good actor and scared me when he shouted BOO. He knew the answers to most of my questions. This is the picture the remake of the original bridge that the British army crossed. There were also memorials of people in the war. This bridge was close to the house my mom and sister went in afterword.

Before we went to see the bridge we went into a cemetery. Some of the grave stones had wrapping around it. This was the cemetery were we saw the remake of a grave stone. This is the war ship we saw in Boston. We were suppose to go on the ship that all the tea was on during The Boston Tea Party but, I don t know why we didn t go on it. I m sure Marty would know more about these kind of ships since he was in the Navy.
