4 DYCKMAN FARMHOUSE MUSEUM 4881 Broadway at 204th Street New York, New York Dyckman Farmhouse, the last Dutch colonial style farmhouse in Manhattan, was built c and was once the center of a thriving farm. The small house built by William Dyckman housed three generations of the Dyckman family before leaving family ownership in the 1870's. In 1915 the farmhouse faced an uncertain future and Mary Alice Dyckman Dean and Fannie Fredericka Dyckman Welch, daughters of the last Dyckman child to grow up in the house, bought the property to ensure its preservation. The farmhouse was restored and donated to the city in 1916 and has been open to the public since. Today, nestled in a small park, the house is an extraordinary reminder of early Manhattan and an important part of its diverse Inwood neighborhood. The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & staff, with assistance from volunteers, manages the house and maintains the gardens. REGULAR PUBLIC HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM AND PARK RESUME Beginning November 17, 2005, the Farmhouse and Park will resume regular public hours: Wed-Sat 11-4 pm and Sun 12-4 pm (The museum will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day.) ADMISSION General admission is: $1 for adults Free for children 10 and under. Groups of 10 or more (adults or children) are by appointment only. An extra fee may apply for guided tours, call for more information. Dyckman Farmhouse Museum marks the return of regular public hours with a special exhibit: flocks November 17, December 11, 2005 An intriguing combination of past and present -- Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma brings her latest project to the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum as part of Five Dutch Days Five Boroughs. Her work explores issues of consumerism, commenting on the lost connection between farmer and final consumer. f l o c k s is the result of her work with one farmer to create a clothing collection from the wool of one entire flock of distinctly wooly sheep. Her creations will be installed in the period rooms of the c historic structure. Generous support from The Netherlands-America Foundation has made the f l o c k s exhibit possible. This exhibit marks the return of regular visiting hours to the Farmhouse. As we continue to bring back our collections and reinstall exhibits, you will be able to view an ever-changing museum with special temporary exhibits and exciting programs. Wednesday, November 16 7:00 pm flocks - PREVIEW RECEPTION Dyckman Farmhouse Museum Space is extremely limited so an R.S.V.P. is required. Tickets are $35 per person. Please call (212) , info@dyckmanfarmhouse.org or go to to download an R.S.V.P. form. Thurs., Nov Sun., Dec. 11, 2005 flocks - The Exhibit The exhibit will be open to the public during regular museum hours: Wednesday - Saturday 11-4 pm and Sunday 12-4 pm Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is thrilled to be part of Five Dutch Days Five Boroughs, a city-wide celebration of the significant historic and cultural connections that exist between New York and the Netherlands. For more information on all the activities, visit Friday, November 25 See listings for times Evacuation Day Burn off those Thanksgiving calories with a Revolutionary history hike! 5 MORRIS-JUMEL MANSION in Roger Morris Park 65 Jumel Terrace, at 160th Street, east of St. Nicholas Avenue New York, NY By Subway: B or C to 163 St. By Bus: M101, M3 or M18 to 161 St. Manhattan's oldest surviving house, the Morris-Jumel Mansion atop Harlem Heights, is a monument to colonial grandeur. Built about 1765 as a summer retreat for British colonel Roger Morris and his wife, Mary Philipse, its distinctive style was very advanced for its time. Morris, the son of a successful English architect, may have influenced the Palladian design, which includes a two-story portico and triangular pediment, classical columns, and a large octagonal room at the rear--the first of its kind in the country. Before the present-day thicket of trees and buildings grew up around the mansion, "Mount Morris" commanded views of downtown Manhattan as well as of New Jersey and Westchester. With the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Morris, a Loyalist, left for England, during which time the home was occupied in turn by George Washington, British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton, and Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen, the Hessian commander. Each man was drawn by the mansion's military vantage point. After the war, the mansion was confiscated by the American government and became Calumet Hall, a popular tavern along the Albany Post Road. In 1810, Stephen Jumel, a rich French merchant, and his wife Eliza, bought the property. Madame Jumel, who was from an impoverished Rhode Island family, redecorated the house in the Empire style. The Jumels spent several years in France, where they kept company with the Napoleonic court circle, but settled in the Mansion in Eliza Jumel, with her impoverished past and extravagant habits, was never accepted by New York Society. One year after her husband's death in 1832 from injuries sustained in a carriage accident, she married former Vice President Aaron Burr in the mansion's front parlor. The union lasted six months, and the couple formally divorced in During her waning years, Madame Jumel was immensely wealthy, but gradually lost her senses and died in The City bought the house from later owners, the Earles, in 1903, and it opened as a public museum the next year. The mansion, operated by Morris-Jumel Mansion, Inc., and the surrounding Roger Morris Park are part of the Jumel Terrace Historic District. The mansion has twelve restored period rooms including the octagonal drawing room, a dining room glittering with 19th-century ceramics and glass and Eliza Jumel's chamber, with a bed that is said to have belonged to Napoleon. The third floor is used for temporary exhibitions and houses the archival collection. Research is currently underway for a reinterpretation of the room believed to have been used by George Washington. After extensive exterior restoration work, completed by the City in 1994, the mansion was returned to its former splendor. Open to the public: Wed. - Sun. 10 am - 4 pm Open to groups by reservation only: Mon. & Tues. Closed on all major holidays.
