Scofflaw [skawf-law, skof-] noun A person who flouts the law, especially one who fails to pay fines owed. A person who flouts rules, conventions or accepted practices. EXAMPLES You don t want your kids growing up thinking you re a scofflaw, do you? - Janet Evanovich, Explosive Eighteen When you go across the border at Nogales Arizona some very severe looking American guards, some of them pasty faced with sinister steel-rim spectacles go scrounging through all your beat baggage for signs of the scorpion of scofflaw. - Jack Kerouac, Lonesome Traveler DID YOU KNOW? The word scofflaw is a portmanteau - a combination of two (or more) words or morphemes and definitions that together form a new word - that describes a person who scoffs or mocks the law. It has been used in the English language since the 1920 s. Page - 5

9 TRAVEL PHOTO OF THE WEEK Ellioaey Island, Iceland - one in the group of islands known as Vestmannaeyjar, Ellioaey is surrounded by the cold North Atlantic Ocean. It is the third largest island in Iceland, having an area of.45 square kilometers and is believed by most to have formed in an eruption roughly five to six thousand years ago. Not much is known about the single home that sits on the island, just that it was built in 1953 and has no electricity; water is collected from rainfall. Bernard Jordan, the British WWII Veteran who snuck out of his retirement home in East Sussex, England to attend the 70th anniversary of DDay in Normandy, France, received more than 2,500 birthday cards for his 90th Birthday on June 16th. The former Royal Navy officer says he s overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and plans to celebrate rather quietly with friends and his wife Irene. THE GOOD NEWS CORNER Page - 9
10 CLOSING NOTES THE SUGGESTION BOX A Suggestion was made that we ask the Association to place a PRIVATE ROAD sign down at the foot of our hill. Apparently at some point this past week a motorcycle enthusiast of questionable intellect and with unquestionably bad judgment chose to use the MBCC bushes as a latrine. I think the suggestion is a good one -- although I doubt that any such sign would deter the gentleman in question. But sometime we just have to try --- and do whatever we can -- even if success is not assured! LIBRARY CORNER.. Unbroken by Hillenbrand has just been given to the Library. It is a WWII story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption. Not only is it a BestSeller -- but it has stayed on the list for many weeks. We all remember WWII -- But his survival is unbelievable and makes us proud of a man we have never known. It is a long book and every word is precious. Pull up a comfortable chair and be prepared to laugh, cry and be stunned to learn about his life Jane Durnan I just recently finished this book and it was extremely moving. It certainly takes you on a very interesting emotional rollercoaster! THIS AND THAT.. We have all made it through another motorcycle week! Now we can back to a more business as usual approach as we get to take our community back. I for one am very glad that the week has become tamer. For the better part it is an interesting and good group of people that the event brings in. Last evening Carrie & I did our first Relay for Life walk --- it is an all day/all night relay walk around a track (we only stayed for a couple of hours). We took our turn at dusk when about 500 luminaries were place around the track -- each one dedicated to someone who is now fighting cancer or someone who had lost their battle with cancer. As each name was read it was a very moving/inspirational time. Next week s newsletter might be a day late. I am going to defer to Chelsea and Sonya -- but because I will be away at my Niece s wedding --- the newsletter might be a tad late. Time to Get Moving! For most of us that means walking. It can be inside or out but it is by walking that we keep walking. Use it or lose it! I m not suggesting walking fast or far -----but to start the process of walking each day on a planned basis. Enjoy this weather! howie Page - 10
