Dear friends, We heard the first larks sing above the field, the sun is already very bright, spring is near. Under our feet the earth becomes soft again and tries to pull us down to deeds after a long, cold winter, during which our feet were moreorless not even touching the hard earth, as we walked on a white layer of snow. The world of the stars, which showed us the way during winter is fainting and we wait now for the coloured stars coming soon out of the earth as all kinds of flowers. Since we wrote last, we performed our Christmas play several times, New Years Eve was very peaceful, as only a small group of people had gathered for the very happy party in Tobias house, many others had gone home or were on holidays. We expressed that evening all our good wished for the New Year. Lots of sunshine and the realisation of our new house were amongst them. During the Holy Nights we turned with painting to the seasons and in the evenings we spoke about the three pillars of Camphill. Candlemasday 60 children from Kohila Gymnasium came to make candles in our workshop. This was a very lively feast. About our carnival party as well as Shrove Tuesday happenings you can read in the contributions to this newsletter. Kristiina is for a month in Finnland, and Sanna from Myllylähde is with us. Maarja-Maria from Tartu spends her spring holidays with us and many guests have been here and there are more to come. There are some poems in the newsletter, which were created in our Pahkla Evening High School which started after Christmas and takes place every Sunday evening. Pahkla Musicians have been practising again. They and everybody else in the village want to invite you to our yearly SPRINGFESTIVAL 25. OF APRILL 2004 AT HOURS With our best wishes for a good Eastertime from all of us in Pahkla. Katarina GUESTS We had guests. Mihkel and Tina came in February. Then came Elsa as well. Elsa went to Haapsalu in between. Tina taught Kaarel to speak Chinese. I saw, how she wrote her name in Chinese. Then Daniel and Florin came for a visit. That was fun. Daniel learned for to be a farmer. I could play draughts with Florin. Daniel can play it now as well. Kristiina went for a month to Finland and a Finnish girl, Sanna came to us. Sanna makes dolls. In between Carola had guests. Yesterday other friends came from Germany. The children from the Aruküla Waldorf School were here and gave a concert together with us. It is very nice, when so many guests come! Piret

NEW YEAR S EVE I had a very nice New Year s eve. The 30st of december we walked to Angerja bus stop. Then we waited for the bus for quite some time. Then we went by bus to Tallinn. Katrin and I, we went to Tallinn. We left the bus at the Järve Selver bus stop. We went to a shop and then we traveled on to Saue. The 31rst of December we went to see Kadriorg castle and saw there a lot of interesting things. We saw paintings, pictures, sculptures and golden plates we saw too. We met there Esther Grünberg with her sister. We saw everything. The pictures of the kings I liked most. There were also Madonnas. In Tallinn we saw the monument. We went by tram, it was almost empty. The pancake restaurant was closed. So we went to the Loitsukeller. In another restaurant we got pancakes. Then we went back to Saue. We had something to eat and then we went for a walk. We admired the electric candles. In the forest we could not go for a walk. It was dark there, as we had winter. So we had to watch the electric candles. Then we ate again, rested again, and then the last end of the year approached. We had bought some fireworks. We put it on the ground and then it flew in the air. Our firework was beautiful as all the other fireworks were beautiful. The most special ones we saw at the Saue shop. I had gone outside together with Katrin and her mother. Her father we left at home. The next morning I saw Buratino and Snow White on television. Then we came back here again. A very big THANK YOU to Katrin and her parents. Jevgeni WINTERPOEM Winter cold and windy, Snow is softly falling, At home I have a cup of tea And then I fall asleep. Now I woke up, still winter outside, Snow is softly falling, The sun is rising, sky is reddening, What a beautiful morning sight. Spring is at hand, I hear in my dream All birds are already singing. Nature is waking up again And flowers show their colors. Who knocks there at my window? He s doing tsip tsip tsice, Oh, those are my dear titmice They pick the fat we put there.

SHROVE TUESDAY AT PAHKLA SCHOOLHOUSE With the five of us we went skiing: Matthias, Hannes, Caroline, Inge, Marek and me. We pushed the skies with our feet along. The group of Hannes won the third place with skiing. Then came sledging: One was on the sledge and somebody else pulled. I was on the big stable ledge and Hannes and Caroline pulled me. Then was also boot throwing. In the end the prices were shared out. I got copy books and notebooks. We got piles of copy books as price. By car we went back to Pahkla Camphilli Küla. Matthias was the driver. Then we had lunch. I cleaned my carpet and changed the bed linen. Finally I washed the floor. That happened on a Saturday, but on the right Shrove Tuesday we drove to the military place to have a good go with the sledge. There were some people driving rally with their cars. They asked us to drive to the side into the snow. Afterwards they helped us out again too. We went down by sledge from the rocket hills. I went backwards. I went very fast. Like a whirlwind it went downhill. Piret got the furthest. We had fantastic weather. It was a beautiful winter this year with lots of snow. It was a cold and short winter. Kaarel CANDLE WORKSHOP In winter I work in the candle workshop. I am mainly packing candles. It s important, that somebody does this work, but it is also a bit boring. That s why I am glad, that Inge, Kaarel, Jevgeni, Kristiina, Margus, Katrin and Katarina are in the workshop as well. Jevgeni made last Giants and Kaarel makes often birthday candles. When we looked at these two different candles, we laughed a lot: such big giant and so tiny candles! We talk and laugh a lot and quickly the day is over again. Often Guido, Marek, Malle and Vova visit us in the workshop when they are finished with their jobs. But what I like most, is that the wax smells so good: It s a bit like every day Cristmas. Clara

Under the roof of the cellar it is warm inside the straw bales you can feel cosy potatoe smell from the cellar always in front of your nose. Pigs. PIGS What do I hear? the voice of a pig? Who rages on the cellar? Under the roof are some striped pigs. Who now dares to have a look? Silvo and Heino climb a bit nearer, How they are running, all those forest born pigs. The hunter came by car he brought his gun along, the guns banged, the dogs barked, blood on the road, poor forest born pig. What do I hear, voice of a pig who is raging on the cellar under the roof are some striped pigs. Still alive is our friend together with Kristiina s cat, takes along his whole family, the dear forest animals, waiting for sowing time, then food will be fine for the pigs. (Sorry for the poor translation) PIG S NEWS Outside it is warm and the birds are singing. Wild pigs run around outside and dig in the compost heap behind the piggery. On Shrove Tuesday the wild piglets went sledging down there. That day it was very beautiful weather. For weeks the wild pigs lived and slept under the roof of the cellar, especially when it was very cold. PEOPLE S NEWS It was my birthday on the 8th of March. For lunch I got mashed potatoes and sausages. In the evening we had cake. I got a music stand I had wished for. The other presents were nice as well. I got slippers with dogs on them. A big THANK YOU to Silvi. Heino gave me a rose. I admire this rose every time, I get into my room. It s a beautiful rose. It makes people s eyes happy. I like it, that Heino works with us. He is a good man. He makes many jokes. He repaired the sink and the shower in our house. Valter had his birthday. He came here to have the party with us. He brought a cake. Then he was actually still on holidays. But now he works again and makes many jokes. Every evening when I go to my room, I do handwork and listen to the radio. I like radio Elmar. They bring nice songs. Then I also think of my friends. We wish a nice spring, much warmth and sunshine! Malle

CARNIVAL We played Spring by Oskar Luts. First we prepared the hall. There was a sauna and a larder, a river and a schoolhouse. First the lesson started: Teacher Laur gave music lesson. Toots played a ghost and brought a red globe to school. Kiir sat in the sauna. The more Toots heated the sauna the colder it became. Toots danced with Arno s bride so that they danced the köster over. Tõnisson made the boat of those German church people sink to the bottom of the river. Together with Tõnisson Arno learned his verses by heart. Toots had his dog Pitsu in his lap. We ate sandwiches and salads and drank lemonade. Toots shared out his belongings. In the end the bell ringer Lible rang the bell. Kaarel Silvo was Toots, He had a wig on his head. He had Pitsu in his lap. Kaarel was Kiir. He had a red wig. I was Arno. Guido was the teacher Laur. Tõnisson was Marek. He let the boat sink. Ants was Lible, the bell ringer. We ate a lot, afterwards we still danced. Inge CAROLINE IRMGARD MARIE There were rumors going round that somebody was about to come and that even already very soon. Already on Wednesday. She was meant to be able to milk but nobody really knew. Wednesday evening she really arrived. It was half past eleven at night when three snowy figures stepped into Vikerkaar house to check on her. She passed the check. Some days later she had to undergo the hard test of milking cows. She passed the test and was accepted to the Pahkla Village Community.

MAARJA-MARIA I like to be here. I don t want to go away. I made biscuits and candles. I like to go to school. I listen to my tape recorder and am happy. I like girls and boys. I like to prepare the meals and to wash the dishes. I like to go swimming and to go to the pictures. I also like to ride a horse. I learn maths. Maarja ABOUT THE HONOURED PAHKLA STABLE FACTORY WORKERS AND PEOPLE We got so much done in winter. We put 4 big bulls at the chain. We feed them well, as they are meat animals. With Silvi we were still in the cellar to sort out potatoes, carrots and beetroot. Malle had much fun there. One cow got finally nicely her calf with the help of the veterinary and our pulling. Sometimes I went together with Heino to the forest to cut wood. Heino was sawing, Marek and I pulled the wood out of the forest and Guido brought it by tractor and trailer to the woodsheds. Ants was sawing them there into pieces and we chop the wood. Silvi, Ants, I, Silvo, Hannes and sometimes also Malle stuck the wood. She had much fun, talking with Heino. Every friday Heino empties our waste water holes. Our hay is rotting on the hay loft. We cleaned the buss stop for the cows outside the milking stable. Now they can move easier there. Silvi helped with the work. Also Silvo, Marek and Guido helped. The pigs grow well. Silvi feeds them in the morning, Heino in the afternoon. Next week we start to clean the grain, and then spring may come. We are very grateful to Silvi ( times) that she saved the cow from her calf. We like it a lot, that Silvi helps us and that she works so much in spite of her age. There is too much work for her here. Vova VIIA Viia was calving the day I returned from Germany. I went to the stable, to help Silvo handmilk. Malle was there as well as Viia was very restless and kicked a lot. We milked a whole bucket full and there was still more milk for the calf. The calf has no name yet, as it will get it only then, when it gives birth to a calf herself. Caro (but it was a bull calf) How comes the cheese onto the table? Through the work in the creamery!

GAME EVENING Every Monday we meet at half past seven in Vikerkaar and play together with the villagers. It is always very funny. Sometimes we play memory or other games and if somebody wants to then he can have a go on chequers or chess. Especially good it is, when Clara makes some tea, because she is so good at it. By playing memory we learn at the same time all the animal names in Estonian. In the beginning it was very funny and all laughed a lot, especially our Inge. But now we hope, that we can soon play outside, when spring finally comes. Hannes Every Monday evening we meet in Vikerkaar to play. Most we like to play memory. That we play every time. Piret is master in chequers and Hannes plays it as well. We like this evening! 8 THE BAKERY In the bakery we all bake bread and buns. I made cheese biscuits. Sanna made chocolate biscuits together with Katrin. Today it was a very funny day. Inge SANNA My name is Sanna. I was born in Helsinki. First we lived in Kallio, then In Lauttasaare. Then we moved to Lahti. I went to live in Sylvia-Koti. I went to school and later I learned to work all workshops. I learned to make dolls. As final project I made a cardigan. Then I went to live in Myllylähde. My housemother is Maija. I live together in a room with Erja. I cleaned the house and did babysitting. I have many friends in Myllylähde. Every year we practise the Christmasplay and perform it at the Christmasparty. I have learned to make lunch and to look after children. Every day I also care for Iita-kiisu. To Pahkla I came as an exchange for three weeks. In the weavery I made dolls and on Fridays I worked in the bakery. I made lunch together with Hannes and Tiia. Tiia said that I am a very good helper. In the house I have ironed laundry and cleaned the kitchen. I could get acquainted with German and Estonian young people. Every day I learned Estonian and read Kalevala and Kalevipoeg. I went to the other houses for meals and for the sauna. For walks I went with Tiia and with Katarina. I also went to town to do some shopping. I went to an Estonian Christian Community service. When we came back from fetching branches for bible evening the dog Nässu ran barking towards us and barked. The cat Tiugu sits often on my lap. Sunday was Katrin s birthday. She got lots of presents and cards. Margus sang several songs. With Katarina I was in Tallinn and bought a cardigan, a ring, books about Tallinn and chocolate eggs. We had something to eat in a cafe. At the sea I saw many seagulls, ducks and swans. I also saw the boats which go to Finland. Today we had guests from Finland. On Thursday there is always village meeting. Friday evening we sing and play instruments in the music room. First we do some singing exercises with Katarina then we start to sing. I learned several Estonian songs. Sanna

PROPER CAR CLEANING It was Friday and coffee-break in Vikerkaar had just started. I was in the computer room and tried to send some mails. The others started to drink coffee and to eat biscuits. Then I heard, that Merle said, that our VW Passat is very dirty. From this I got the inspiration that it would be time, to start to clean the car. I started to do it at four o clock, as I started to heat Tobias house at three o clock. Carola brought the car to Valter s workshop, as I wanted to wash it there. From the stable I took warm water and sponges I found in the workshop. Work went very happily, as the radio played at the same time and from there came very good songs. At six o clock there were minus degrees outside and the wet windows became icy, creating nice patterns. I was astonished, that almost nobody wished me strength ( that is a special Estonian saying) but this did not disturb me. The most important for me was that the job got ready and this took together three hours. I liked such a change from daily jobs. Silvo Happy Easter and warm spring to you!
