Greetings and welcome to the July Newsletter of Ulysses Canterbury Branch. Well June was a better month for ridding, I managed to get out on three of the four rides, also the St John presentation day as well. I was disappointed of the low numbers of riders attending these rides. If you can throw any light on to why you are not getting out there riding with the branch other than the colder weather can you please me? Even in the colder days we used to get more than we do at present. If we don t know the committee can t fix it. Thanks for your input on this. The South Island Remembrance Service Hanmer Springs on the 2 nd of August is not far away so please make your bookings for accommodation either the Friday night or the Saturday night early as they fill up fast the week or so before the event. This is a very special event remembering those who have passed on. It is being held at the Hot Springs Motor Lodge, gathering at 12:30 for a 1pm start. Riders come from all over and is not only a time of remembrance but also a time to catch up with people over dinner that evening starting around 6pm. Early start so those who came just for the day are not too late heading back and can be part of the activities. Check the poster on the rides section of the web site. You can come by Car or Bike. 1st November is our branch 1000K endurance ride. Leaving at 6am to travel around the top part of the South Island. Leaving from Christchurch and ending up back at Christchurch. You ride within your own skills, best in a group of fellow riders. Details and entry forms will be posted on the Branch web site nearer the time. The next social night on the 16 th July will have guest speakers from Christchurch Motorbike Modifications, Greg Ewing. He will give an intro on some products they are doing for people who have some leg or arm issues and are wanting to keep on riding. I will be away that evening on Business, but Chris Groube will be leading the evening. Regards and enjoyable riding. Robert Edgeler #6969 Canterbury Branch Coordinator. A note from Bob on his Euro trip. More inside the Newsletter: One of the funniest things about this trip has been getting the locals to understand our need for cold milk with tea. This morning a waitress asked Tony if he wanted milk (hot) on his cornflakes & he said yes. She then asked if he wanted coffee, again yes, so she poured that onto his cornflakes too! Think she might have started a new trend. 3

19 th June. Euro 2014 G'day everyone, Jim, Terry & I are currently in West Yorkshire staying with friends of Terry's, very close to the little town of Holmfirth(Last of the Summer Wine). One stage of the Tour de France goes through here on July 5th so we're thinking of entering Jim! Picked up our bikes in Chichester last Sat & rode to my sisters place in Devon for 3 nights. Brilliant riding through narrow winding country roads, but a navigational nightmare, only whimps would use a GPS. 7 hour ride, mainly motorways, on Tuesday, but got lost in Manchester, before getting onto even more narrow country roads over the Yorkshire Dales. Today we take the bus to Holmfirth (our guide's not a biker or even a driver) so should be interesting. Head for the M1 & London tomorrow & meet up with mate Tony then Janet on Sat before heading onto France on Sunday. Overall all good so far appear from a dose of Hong Kong belly that I'm still trying to shake off. ing a little difficult can only use my phone & only when free WiFi available. Chris, Bob, Jim & Terry. 9

5th July Benidorm & Duelling Banjos. Hi folks, spent last night in a little village just south of Valencia & this morning Janet decides we should visit Benidorm, which we did. It's exactly as shown in the TV series, very embarrassing, for us English type persons. Janet, of course, phoned partner Bill from there and really rubbed it in, evidently he's a big fan of the TV show. Thought we'd head inland after that to get away from the heavy traffic, which we also did. Finished up very high in the mountains on a road no wider than an average CH CH footpath & no clue as to where we were. Still not sure really but we are in yet another magic little village called Yeste. Currently pm Friday & the whole place is still buzzing, except for us who are mostly snoring. There certainly are compensations to getting lost, the views & the experience has been amazing. Big problem now is to find our way to Malaga in the morning & then on to Gibraltar & Portugal over the next few days. Will let you know if we make it out of Yeste next time I can hook into the free Wi-Fi. Terry & Jim both misbehaving, as you would expect, Tony's feeling betrayed by Doris (the GPS) & Janet can't stop gloating about Benidorm! Apart from that, all good with us, still very hot though, but no rain to date. Chrs Bob, Jim, Terry, Janet & Tony. 10 th July 2014 Portugal Hi guys, she's been a pretty tough couple of days, riding in the heat & then needing to re hydrate every evening with the local brews. Actually spent a couple of nights in a camping ground a place called Calahonda on the Costa del Sol. Bloody awful, no sleep, the Spaniards go out to play at 11 pm & go to bed 4 am, Terry was very polite about it though! Rode up to Casares in the mountains the next day, just magic, then down to Gibraltar & more traffic chaos. Hit the road north after that and found a beaut hostel about 60 ks from the Portuguese border. Into Portugal on Tuesday, again through the mountains, magic riding, brilliant roads with very little traffic. Finished up in Portelegra after a nightmare ride around the town looking for accommodation. Yet another magic ride from there to here, Braganca, in the north, and not far from the Spanish border. Just had a fabulous feed topped of by a glass of very acceptable Port in it's homeland. We've all really enjoyed Portugal & it's people & will be sorry to leave in the morning. Not sure where we'll be tomorrow night but that's all part of the deal, but love these mountain roads. Stay bright folks we'll be back in touch again soon! Chrs B, T, J, J & T. 10

Pizza Night Last month a group of about 15 braved a cold dark and wet night and at Carolyn s suggestion met at La Porcheta in Papanui. A couple were even brave enough to arrive on bikes, one even on a scooter!!! As usual, we all enjoyed the stimulating company, food and wine. This month, for something completely different, we have chosen a Pizza restaurant. Filadelfio s at 150 Colombo St. Wednesday 23 rd Starting around 6:30 7:00 As usual ring or me so we can get approximate numbers beforehand (they would like to know by the Monday) patandrussell@xtra.co.nz Russell. ULYSSEES. Ride to Cheques Flag. Rangitata. Sunday 29 th June The ride south for 140 kilometers in winter is not to be taken lightly. Several layers of woollies was required. But the day was fine and clear. At 11am with seventeen plus bikes and riders assembling at Curletts Road Z we had a ride. I arrived in the middle of Robert s Road Safety message. As I was late I was nominated to go out front. This year was a good safe ride southwards. No stopping to regroup as its just too dangerous restarting a large group. As a group we came through in three lots. Up front we moved just slightly faster than cars. As a result no idiots in vehicles appeared, trying to pass a long column of bikes. The ride south was pretty routine as rides go. Good to see the message of riders using Full Beams is getting through. Lots of bright lights behind me, resembling a Christmas tree. Approaching vehicles gave us a wide berth. I was so relaxed I was collecting cobwebs. Arriving at Chequers we caused a mild panic. We motorcycles were now covering his front lawn, the proprietor was on the telephone asking for help. Not to the cops but upstairs for extra help on the food. The food and hot chips came out quick. With a group wanting more riding adventures up country they were gone. The rest of us followed Thea back to Ashburton barely staying with her. She was on a fast mission. Later she stated she was having some fun. I lost my cob-webs off the bike. The local constabulary caused a panic behind us as he made a u turn. There was a reported moment of relief when he pulled up a car. We all arrived home tired. A good day for all concerned. 11

Rider Mentoring Our riding styles have evolved through years spent in the saddle; developed from but not necessarily improved upon, basic skills we were shown by motor cycle instructors back in the days of kick starters and magnetos, or by buying our first bike and winging it and often by trial and error the lessons learnt from the odd whoopsie; I won t do that again, it really, really hurts! We may also have modified our riding habits through tips from riders more experienced than us or from extra training we ve done along the way. If you re anything like me and have attended rider training courses where cornering and braking skills were demonstrated, it highlighted glaring gaps in my skills. Other than when acting the fool or perhaps when I was a little bit, umm, well, we used to drink and drive back in those days, I d had no major offs or scares to change my way of thinking so I must have been doing it right. Right? Kind of like sex really, blundering on regardless of the consequences. In hind sight I was just bloody lucky. The motorbikes we enjoy today handle, brake and corner so much better than they did 30, 40 years ago. My old XS650 had the rigidity of an old farm gate and the back end often tried to pass the front; usually at the most inconvenient of moments. If I rode her like I ride La Noir Salope I d be spitting weeds and picking gravel from oozing ruddy rashes. The bikes and the technology we enjoy today give the rider a great deal of confidence and often to their detriment, a false sense of their ability. We ride faster, harder and push the boundaries because the bike under us will let us do it up to a point and when things go wrong they tend to go wrong in a big way. Some years ago Canterbury Ulysses began a Ride Mentoring programme and a number of keen branch members attended a course run by Andrew Templeton of Roadsafe but for whatever reason, it unfortunately lapsed into early decay. So what is a Ride Mentor? Firstly, Ride Mentors are not instructors. If you want to learn how to ride a motorcycle there are a number of training providers in our area. There s our very own Steve Orpwood with Street- Smarts. Duncan Seed runs 2RideSafe and is based in Rangiora. Dan Ornsby and Ride Forever operate out of Ruapuna and Mike Flowers of Mainland Motorcycle School is also available. However it is expected that a Ride Mentor is a competent rider with good Road Craft. Ride Mentors will be expected to have the level of skill to be able pass their motorcycle licence. Yep, we all take it for granted we can but when push comes to shove could we actually pass the practical again? I m not saying you will have to but I hope to get someone from the NZ Police motorcycle team or an approved trainer to assess us. From a personal point of view I believe anyone wanting to be a Ride Mentor must be prepared to go the extra miles and by that I mean regular training from approved motorcycle training providers. The Branch offers rebates for training fees so there s no excuse why you can t commit your time. Some insurance companies even refund the fees, or a % of the fees for an approved training course. At the end of the day if you wanna talk the talk; you gotta walk the walk; something like that. Mentoring can be tailor made to suit the Mentoree; is that actually a word? Not everyone wants to talk about counter steering, cornering lines, braking and such so a Mentor is someone riders can also turn to for advice on riding gear, wet weather riding, how to combat helmet hair, what sort of stuff you carry in your tank bag or under your seat for those just in case moments. In fact just about anything. And if they don t know, well hopefully they can point you in the direction of someone who does. 12

With the ANZAC Day St John ride safely in the hands of Russell Williams and his team I want to try and give this a bit of a nudge because I think it is really worthwhile so I am asking for expressions of interest from Branch members who think they might like to go it a go. I m probably looking at around 6 to 8 people but that s not set in concrete. Ball bearing or child bearing, it doesn t matter, in fact it would be great to have some of the fairer sex as Mentors. We have a growing number of female riders and I m sure some will have wonderful recipes they want to share. Oops, I can feel my shins blackening as we speak. But I m serious; it doesn t only have to be blokes who put their hand up. I have a lot to get sorted first so it s not going to happen overnight. I have to find out what Ulysses NZ has in the way of reference material and what the program is expected to deliver then figure out a way of how I m going to deliver it. In the meantime if any member of the Branch thinks would like to be considered as a Ride Mentor just flick us an and your contact details. 14 Colonoscopy Journal: I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a colour diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis. Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner. I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said, because my brain was shrieking, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!' I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called 'MoviPrep,' which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America 's enemies. I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavour. Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a onelitre plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a litre is about 32 gallons!!). Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon. The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humour, state that after you drink it, 'a loose, watery bowel movement may result.'this is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.moviprep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but, have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another litre of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet. After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologise to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough. At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said. Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked. Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka in their MoviPrep. At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house. 14

When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand. There was music playing in the room, and I realised that the song was 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' had to be the least appropriate. 'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere behind me. 'Ha ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like. I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was yelling 'Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,' and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood. Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that it was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colours. I have never been prouder of an internal organ. On the subject of Colonoscopies... Colonoscopies are no joke, but these comments during the exam were quite humorous... A physician claimed that the following are actual comments made by his patients (predominately male) while he was performing their colonoscopies: 1. 'Take it easy, Doc. You're boldly going where no man has gone before!' 2. 'Find Amelia Earhart yet?' 3. 'Can you hear me NOW?' 4. 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?' 5. 'You know, in Arkansas, we're now legally married.' 6. 'Any sign of the trapped miners, Chief?' 7. 'You put your left hand in, you take your left hand out...' 8. 'Hey! Now I know how a Muppet feels!' 9. 'If your hand doesn't fit, you must quit!' 10. 'Hey Doc, let me know if you find my dignity.' 11. 'You used to be an executive at Enron, didn't you?' 12. 'God, now I know why I am not gay.' And the best one of all: 13. 'Could you write a note for my wife saying that my head is not up there?' 15

When: Wednesday 26 th June 2014 Pizza night Where: La Porchetta, Cranford St. What time: 1830hrs (6.30pm). Russell made the booking. Pam and I first to arrive, just settling in and more started to arrive, in all we numbered 12. After much discussion, our orders were taken. Good to see everyone. Drinks and food arrived and not everyone ordered pizzas. A lot of talking and a bit of ribbing were on the menu as well. A few decided to have dessert. Prices are reasonable, food enjoyable, company relaxed, what more could you ask for? Thank you Russell and Pat for being the contacts and organizers for this enjoyable evening. A couple even came on their bikes. A message to those who advise they are coming and don t turn up. The hosts arrange with the venue for seating and tables, so if you decide not to come this reflects on the hosts, the branch and those attending. If tables are tight it must frustrate the venue as well. Looking forward to the next one? Hell yes. Hope to see you there. Stephen Orpwood 2119 Folk on a recent ride to Leeston 16

The Auckland branch had planned a weekend run to Taupo and it was on the eve of the run, 5th August 1988 that we learnt of the death of our friend Mel who had been in hospital for some weeks after an accident on his bike. During the weekend the members present in Taupo decided to remember Mel the following year with a memorial run for which a badge would be struck. Since that time we have lost a number of good friends and fellow motorcyclists through accident or illness and after the first Memorial Run it was decided to change the title to Remembrance Run in order to include all riders who wished to come along to remember old friends. 2 ND Aug. Please consider this: This ride is our chance to honour our departed mates. We consider them to be riding with us and expect the behaviour of all to reflect that. 18
